PSA Foundation Update
Stuff.” So begin collecting your poultry
memorabilia “stuff” you can bring to
the meeting to help us raise funds for
the Foundation in a fun way!
PSA Legacy Project Update
The Legacy Project, designed to
raise funds to digitize and index back
issues of Poultry Science (and its predecessor
journals) to 1908 and make
them available on the Poultry Science
site, is nearing completion. As of the
end of 2010, we had received more
than 200 donations from 138 individual
donors and five corporate sponsors in
addition to the Novus Challenge Grant
of $30,000. Donations were received
from three sister associations: the
Southern Poultry Science Society,
WPSA-Canada, and WPSA-USA.
There were 32 gifts of $1,000 or more
from individual donors. A total of 36
donations were made “In Memory Of”
and 101 donations were given as tributes
“In Honor Of.”The total received is
$76,100.
The scanning of all back issues is
complete, and the files (abstracts plus
PDF articles) have been delivered to
HighWire for loading. HighWire has
been working hard on quality assurance,
making corrections, and reloading
content as required. As this update
is being written, we have received
word that the final rounds of corrections
and file resupplies have been
completed, and that as soon as access
control for members and institutions
has been configured, we will be ready
to launch the site. What that means is
that the membership will have access
to the past issues before our expected
release date of July, which we had
anticipated last year. Members will be
notified of the exact date for the release
as soon it has been finalized. The
Foundation Board extends it sincere
thanks to all who have contributed to
this important project.
2011 Silent Auction
The Third PSA Foundation Silent
Auction is planned for the annual
meeting in St. Louis. The format will
be similar to last year’s format, with
the auction held during the reception
before the Awards Banquet. Tony Pescatore
will be organizing and managing
the auction again this year, and has
(tongue in cheek, I think) suggested
the theme will be “Stuff People Want
to Buy”—we assume he means “Poultry
What’s Next?
The Foundation Board met in Atlanta
on November 18, 2010, for a fundraising
workshop. We engaged the services
of Melda Bassett, senior director
of development for the University of
Florida Foundation, to serve as presenter
and moderator of the workshop.
A number of initiatives were identified
and discussed, together with potential
prospective donors, for future initiatives.
An overarching initiative that
might be dubbed “Sustainability of
PSA’s Future” was discussed and was a
major point of discussion at the Foundation
Board’s mid-year board meeting
in January. We are in the process of
developing the next major capital campaign,
which we expect to launch at the
annual meeting in St. Louis. At present,
we are planning to raise funds to create
an endowment to provide for 1) undergraduate
scholarships, 2) graduate fellowships,
3) student travel grants, and
4) student research grants in an effort
to ensure support for future members
of the Association. We will keep the
members informed as we move forward
with this next exciting project.
2011 PSA Informal Nutrition Symposium
The 2011 PSA Informal Nutrition Symposium will be held on Saturday, July 16, at the America’s Center
in St. Louis, Missouri. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Exploring Maximum Animal Responses.”
The primary objective of this symposium is to provide an effective forum where critical and pertinent poultry issues
are addressed. Issues are explored based on scientific discoveries that lead to practical solutions. Consequently,
researchers can pursue future research and field managers can apply new findings promptly.
The five presentations and speakers are
Biological limits to productivity by Steve Leeson
Optimizing broiler performance using different amino acid density diets: What are the limits? by Sergio Vieira and
C. R. Angel
Poultry response to high levels of dietary fiber sources varying in physical and chemical characteristics by
Gonzalo Mateos
Nutritional limits to responses during the poultry embryonic development
by Zehava Uni
Maximum immunity effectors: Mechanisms and animal performance Limitations by Ramesh Selvaraj
There will be some discussions after each presentation. An extensive review and summation will be conducted by
Brooke Humphrey, Bill Saylor, and Doug Korver. There will be ample of time for questions, answers, and comments by all
participants.
