Abelard
Libretto by Edwin and Julie Roxburgh
Publisher: United Music Publishers
Opera in three acts
In 12th-century France, Peter Abelard’s ideas were way ahead of their time. Refusing to give in to the pressure of the church, he was
twice convicted of heresy. His position was made more difficult by his love for a novice nun, Heloise. The passionate letters she sent to
him during a decade of separation are amongst the most beautiful literature in history. She could not, however, protect Abelard from the
cruelty of the church that would eventually destroy him.
(Dutch/English/German)
From a 16th-century Chinese collection of illustrated stories about Monkey, the episode with the White-Bone Demon resulted in a set of
110 illustrations, which are the basis for the opera. A new production is in progress to produce a completely digital set, using the original
illustrations.
Monkey spends 500 years mastering magical arts, and for this, is imprisoned by Buddha himself. Upon his release, he becomes the pupil
of a Monk and embarks on a pilgrimage of penance, during which he encounters the White-Bone Demon. It is Monkey’s duty to protect
