THE YEAR In collaboration with the IOR
SECOND
Andrew Kennedy
LAC Air Conditioning, trained
by Practical Refrigeration
Training Centre (funded by Skill
Solutions)
Despite having left school with few
qualifications, Andrew Kennedy regrouped
and pushed on to firstly qualify in heating
and plumbing, then to seek another
challenge in refrigeration and air conditioning. “Andrew displayed a
real sense of ambition and drive, despite an initial false start, and his
references further convinced that he is on a mission to progress,” said
our judging panel. They were also impressed with his commitment
to study, having joined an adult training group four months late, he
managed to catch up with both technical and practical aspects. This
was combined with his broad range of ‘on-the-job’ experience, and
willingness to embrace changing and emerging technologies.
THIRD
CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR
HIGHLY COMMENDED
UK Genetron Performax LT Campaign
Honeywell Fluorine Products Europe
Honeywell was highly commended by the judges for the efforts it had
made in promoting a low-GWP alternative to R404A to retailers. The
manufacturer sought to highlight the savings R407F could offer not
only in energy and carbon but in running costs too, and chose a variety
of channels, including events such as RAC’s Question Times, to help
deliver the message directly to top decision makers.
FINALISTS
Daikin City
Daikin Air Conditioning UK
Daikin City is an interactive 3D virtual environment designed to
demonstrate the energy savings possible by integrating heating,
cooling and controls. The application, aimed at architect and engineer
specifiers, allows the user to select various options within a range of
settings, such as hotel, office or retail. Daikin says the format allows
complex information to be conveyed in an easy to understand manner.
Chilling Facts Campaign
RETAIL PROJECT
OF THE YEAR
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Piccadilly Gardens Store
Co-operative Group
The judges liked the blend of natural refrigerants and heat recovery
techniques in this store, and the fact that energy efficiency measures
have addressed both cooling and heating. An R290 hydrocarbon
primary chills a glycol mix via a plate heat exchanger to distribute to
the cases, fitted with glycol coils. The cases have full height sliding
doors for an up to 40 per cent reduction in case duty, and still don’t
require defrost heating the retailers notes, thanks to fully flooded
coils and higher temperatures. A further heat exchanger on the pack
absorbs rejected heat to the store via the glycol circuit. The system
qualifies as a renewable energy source. The use of glycol cuts the
store refrigerant charge by 70 per cent to 18 kg – and reduces the risk
of leakage – while reducing refrigeration energy by as much as 50 per
cent and energy bills by around 30 per cent.
FINALISTS
Forced free air cooling in supermarket cases
Tesco Stores
Tesco has done extensive work on the application of ‘pipeless’ display
cases, where cold air is ducted into the cases and cold store ceiling
vents, in collaboration with Ultra Refrigeration. Its Marlborough
store was able to put the many claimed benefits – from a refrigerant
charge a fifth of conventional versions to avoiding the need for case
mechanical parts to eliminating drainage – into action. Tesco has seen
the important bonus of 9 per cent better energy consumption.
Walmart, Brampton Ontario store
Integral Group and Elementa
As part of its consulting services to the Walmart store in Canada,
Integral recommended a heat recovery loop taking heat from the
refrigeration system to use for space heating. The lack of a separate
gas heater provides an estimated 15 per cent saving over a conventional
store, a figure improved upon via the use of occupancy sensors.
Spar Sedbergh store
James Hall & Co, Applied UK and Arctic Circle
The siting of a new Spar in the Lake District National Park offered a
prime opportunity to trial an integrated suite of green technologies for
the smaller retailer. Sedburgh features a hydrocarbon primary system
cooling chilled water, a CO 2
heat pump for hot water, free cooling and
glass doors on the chillers. Projected energy savings are of the order
of 66 per cent over traditional appliances.
National air conditioning upgrade
Boots and Toshiba Air Conditioning
With Boots concerned about its legacy of R22-based air conditioning,
Toshiba and consultant Designbrook proposed an extensive upgrade
to the retailer’s estate. In just two months, 232 locations had systems
installed based on the manufacturer’s R410A Super Digital Inverter
heat pumps. The project saw close co-operation with installers,
sophisticated energy analysis and most importantly energy savings per
store of up to 66 per cent on the old systems.
REFRIGERATION
INNOVATION OF THE YEAR:
SYSTEM OR STANDALONE
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Brooklands Mark 5 display case
SPG and Marks & Spencer
The Brooklands case is now on its fifth generation, but the judges
commended SPG for setting out to reinvent the concept on a clean
sheet basis. The aim for the Mark 5 was to retain an open design
but to approach the performance of ‘the Mark 4 with doors on’. The
judges particularly like the use a hybrid refrigeration/air conditioning
evaporator offering a larger area of copper tube than the convention,
with a smaller diameter. The increased area, together with a
hydrophilic coating to minimise the impact of surface water offers very
good heat transfer. This, plus new backward curved centrifugal fans,
and a dual air curtain has resulted in 12 per cent lower refrigeration
duty and a whopping 41 per cent reduction in electrical power
consumption over the Mark 4. Evaporating temperature has risen
from -7 deg C to -3.5 deg C, reducing the capacity of plant needed to
run the cases.
FINALISTS
World-first chiller with HFO refrigerants
Waitrose, Klima-Therm, Frascold, Geoclima
and Honeywell
Now the world’s first HFO chiller is up and running in Waitrose’s
Bromley store, the industry waits expectantly for full data on energy
performance. The chiller’s international team of developers already
believe the early trials have proven a reliable GWP alternative to
hydrocarbons and expect even better results against R134a.
Piccadilly Gardens: refrigeration and heating
Co-operative Group
The system installed at the Piccadilly Gardens store utilises a
hydrocarbon primary system chilling a glycol mix for delivery to the
cases, while a second glycol circuit takes the rejected refrigeration
heat and distributes it around the store for heating. The innovative
system contributes to an 18 kg total refrigerant charge and a 30 per
cent lower energy consumption than its predecessor store.
Maintenance-free condenser
Tesco Stores
Condensers easily get clogged, so Tesco’s nifty solution to reducing
maintenance at its Windsor store was to develop a control protocol
that reversed the condenser fans to blow away the debris. The trial
condensers have shown a 15 per cent cut in energy consumption and
have not required any manual maintenance.
SunSource solar energy system for
microchannel air-cooled condensers
Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration
Heatcraft has designed a range of air-cooled condensers to work in
tandem with solar PV panels, enabling the condensers to run at lower
energy and grid-free at times of peak energy usage. They utilise a
microchannel design for lower weight and improved heat exchange.
INNOVATION OF THE YEAR:
COMPONENT OR PROCESS
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Envirofoam Sustain
IFS Chemicals
IFS was cited by judges for seeking to improve the environmental
performance of a ubiquitous product – insulation foam. Envirofoam
Sustain is based on vegetable oils recycled from cooking, replacing
conventional non-recyclable polyurethane foams. As well as obvious
advantage in sustainable production, and comparable handling to
conventional foams, Envirofoam claims superior insulation properties.
Further benefits include compatibility with low-GWP blowing agents and
energy use during production of just 10 per cent of conventional foams.
FINALISTS
Intelligent Load Shedding
RDM
RDM’s Intelligent Load Shedding controls monitor the capacity of
the refrigeration plant against case load and where there is a
disparity automatically shuts down case sections in a controlled
fashion. The ‘intelligent software’ ensures that the least critical
cases are shut down first, preserving stock control. It is particularly
configured to respond quickly to CO 2
systems, reducing the risk of
catastrophic failure.
Bio-material fan
ebm papst
Ebm papst has a target that 15 per cent of its products contain
sustainable bio-materials by 2015 and this version of its successful
fan contains the wood-plastic composite epylen in the mounting ring.
As well as its carbon credentials – 37 per cent reduction in CO 2
over
plastic – the material has an improved sound dampening effect.
Intelligent Glycol
Arctic Circle
The energy efficiency of secondary fluids can now be optimised thanks
to the Intelligent Glycol system, which uses a control strategy to
match the glycol flow rate to the capacity of the system. The IG system
modulates the pump rate, further reducing energy. The system also
allows a separate glycol circuit to handle recovered heat.
Aluminium tube and jointing system
reflok and FSW
The reflok system promises ‘leak free joints’ by using a patented
mechanical jointing system, while the use of aluminium tube slashes
the material cost and, because of its lower weight than copper, the
install cost too. The benefits combined offer an installation time 30-40
per cent quicker than conventional copper methods, reflok says.
performance of a ubiquitous product – insulation foam.
MCS certification, support and
renewables installation training
Easy MCS
Easy MCS has a well earned reputation as a provider of renewables
training and certification, and provides both support and mentoring
where required to new installers who wish to achieve MCS
accreditation. Judges noted the important contribution in ensuring air
source heat pumps are fully understood and properly deployed
by installers.
Client centre seminar series
Ebm papst
Ebm papst was cited by judges for its imaginative approach to
‘thinking bigger’ than products alone. The company’s series of free
seminars has featured topics from data centres to climate change,
with guest speakers and real-world case studies making for
‘practical understanding’.
Refrigeration performance score
Tesco Stores
Tesco set out to ensure that commissioning engineers on its stores
could deliver ‘right first time’ on product temperature and set points.
The firm engaged a monitoring company to score each system against
specification before commissioning, from A down to F. Engineers
can then see what issues need addressing before they actually
commission the system. Tesco has hopes the initiative can be widened
to energy consumption issues in future.
PRO academy
Panasonic Heating and Cooling
Panasonic’s PRO academy seeks to provide hands-on and face-to-face
training for contractors, installers and specifiers alike, via a range
ENVIRONMENTAL PIONEER
OF THE YEAR
FINALISTS
Chris Playford
Chris Playford celebrated his 20th year at Foster Refrigerator this
year, rising from design engineer to market and development director.
Among the technology developments he has been involved with, he
has pioneered the use of hydrocarbons in the Foster refrigerator
range. Chris has also been instrumental in developing Foster’s carbon
strategy, culminating in the first corporate social responsibility report
in the commercial refrigeration sector.
Jon Shipman
Jon Shipman started work as a refrigeration contractor in the early
1990s but it is for his work on ‘leak free’ connections that he is cited
here. Jon started working with copper connections but quickly became
convinced of the advantages of aluminium, in carbon savings, weight
and install time. Since 2007, he has researched and refined the
process, launching the new reflok product in September last year. An
installation has been running in a Co-operative store without leaks for
more than six months.
Sean Allison-Burnham
As technical director of Cooler Recycling Solutions (CRS), Sean
Allison-Burnham has done pioneering work on the recycling of large
commercial refrigerators. Notably Sean has achieved a system that
can recover the foam blowing agents from large display cases. This
is set to have a major impact on reducing emissions in an application
where refrigerants, including CFCs, are not widely recovered.
OF THE YEAR
HIGHLY COMMENDED
A1R Services
The judges wanted to send a clear message to the industry that
smaller companies can achieve environmental credentials to be
proud of with the decision to highly commend A1R, the smallest
entrant in the field. The Hertfordshire company has 12 employees
but it supplied an impressive resume ‘punching above its weight’.
Among the notables were the fact that all its workforce are signed
up for hydrocarbon training, a commitment to paperless service
records and a high standard of F-Gas management. Working on
contracts including NHS trusts, industrial sites and ambulance fleet
maintenance, A1R has achieved excellent customer testimonials too.
“A great range of work for a small company,” judges concluded.
FINALISTS
WR Refrigeration
Regular finalist WR had initiatives a-plenty to offer again this year,
with its flagship HFO/HC/CO 2
Training Academy recognised elsewhere.
Other achievements include a National Apprenticeship scheme, the
launch of WR Electrical and the winning of significant new business.
Judges noted there had been a real culture change at the firm and
predicted further success in years to come.
Capital Cooling
Another regular finalist, Capital Cooling again caught the judges’
eye with consistent work, particularly on glass door chillers and
hydrocarbon integrals with the Co-operative Group. This year Capital
has also launched a national air conditioning operation, to add to its
already broad offering encompassing service, installation, cabinets
and coldrooms.
Ceilite Airconditioning
Ceilite was another firm that impressed the judges as ‘a small
company doing the right thing’ – even extending to achieving Investors
In People status. The firm has made a particular speciality of health
and safety training and has developed its own training and guidance
Toolbox Talks. On the environmental front, it has made headway with
installation of heat pumps, including heat pump door heaters.
contains high and low temperature compressors enabling both chillers
and freezers to be connected without additional booster systems.
Discharge To Water Heat Pump Harvester
Arctic Circle
The D2W heat pump maximises efficiency by operating as a two
stage process: preheating incoming water by a discharge gas desuperheating
heat exchanger; while the R134a heat pump takes its
heat source from partially condensing the refrigeration system’s
discharge gas, which is fed to the high temperature thermal store.
Its seasonal COP of 5.83 is more than 50 per cent better than a
keen to apply the highest standards to its building retrofit. Engaging
among others Johnson Controls on an energy performance contract
has seen a thorough re-engineering of chiller plant, controls and
glazing. Energy savings are of the order of 38 per cent, a whopping
£2.8 million annual saving.
Tesco’s Refrigeration Systems in China
Tesco Stores China, working with Baseline
Since 2008, Tesco has been implementing a ‘step-change plan’
with local firm Baseline to significantly upgrade its Chinese stores’
energy efficiency and leak tightness, and in the process introducing
technologies not previously seen in the region, including EC fans and
glass-door freezer cabinets. Since then, the store reports refrigerant
loss per square metre has been cut by 58 per cent and energy usage
cut by 15-20 per cent.
World-first Chiller with HFO Refrigerants
Waitrose, Klima-therm, Frascold, Geoclima
and Honeywell
The creation of the HFO chiller has seen the partners widely praised
for pushing ahead with the practical application of the low-GWP
refrigerant. The international partnership across the supply chain
has moved the HFO1234ze system from lab to store at pace and early
results have proved promising, particularly where use of hydrocarbon
chillers is restricted.
END USER OF THE YEAR
(NON-SUPERMARKET)
FINALISTS
Boots
The high street giant has been credited with a wide-scale upgrade of
its store air conditioning, moving from R22 to heat-pump systems.
Working with Toshiba and consultant Designbrook, the retailer
commissioned surveys across 320 stores before specifying heat pump
systems. Trial results showed a huge 66 per cent energy improvement.
Colt Technology Services
Data centre operator Colt has seen the merit of ultra-high efficiency
cooling systems, and has been prepared to make significant
investment in plant in exchange for dramatic energy savings. Its
recent two London upgrades, undertaken with Cool-Therm has seen
Turbomiser chillers installed and typically energy halved – saving more
than £100,000 a year on a single site.
Nottingham University
Nottingham University wanted to practise what it preached when
specifying its energy technology building, resulting in a host of
innovations, from micro-biomass to earth duct passive cooling, where
air is passed underground for cooling, and a hydrocarbon chiller. The
spec adds up to a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
GKN Aerospace
The aerospace manufacturer made the final for being the first
end user to commit to a revolutionary combination of mechanical
jointing and aluminium pipework. The reflok installation at GKN’s
Bristol facility involved 700 m of alumininium and 225 brazing-free
connectors, with no leaks reported and a 30-40 per cent quicker
install time.
ACHIEVEMENT
OF THE YEAR
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Co-operative Group
Piccadilly Gardens
The judges praised the company for blazing a trail on fitting glass
doors to chillers, ignoring objections on merchandising grounds. It is
also not afraid to apply efficiency techniques and technology to smaller
store formats. The Piccadilly Gardens store typifies these traits, with a
hydrocarbon/glycol refrigeration system with heat recovery providing a
30 per cent winter energy cut with a mere 18 kg refrigerant charge.
Tesco Stores and Engynius
Glass door project
Tesco and Engynius worked on a major freezer cabinet retrofit
across the UK estate, which saw 44,000 doors replaced with the
Eliminaator door, together with 10,000 cabinet frames. Tesco says
the annual saving from the project is 57.4 GWh with a carbon saving
of 33,300 tonnes. Eliminating door heating via the patent ‘warm edge
technology’ of the glass structure, together with reduced perimeter
heat, saves around 60 per cent over conventional glass doors.
Marks and Spencer and Oaksmere
Integrated low carbon heat pump solution
The heat pump installation at the Gainsborough Simply Food store uses
air de-stratification and heat recovery from the refrigeration system to
make major savings. Heat exchangers on the display cases allow the
rejected heat to percolate into the aisles to reduce the cold aisle effect.
The installation has resulted in a saving of around 35 per cent on the
store’s electrical consumption and a 120-tonne CO 2
e reduction.
Sainsbury’s
20by20 Sustainability Plan
Sainsbury’s was cited for its ambitious carbon-cutting plan that
commits it by 2020 to reducing operational carbon emissions by 30 per
cent absolute and 65 per cent relative to store square footage against
2005. Switching to a CO 2
system in more than 100 stores has achieved
equivalent energy consumption to an equivalent HFC store while saving
243,000 tonnes CO 2
e and 97 per cent in GWP, the retailer says.
Morrisons and Arctic Circle
Stanground Store
The high-tech, naturally cooled Stanground Store has been rewarded
elsewhere but appears here also for the carbon impact of its
technology. The use of pumped CO 2
secondary with hydrocarbon
primary, thermal storage tanks and heat pumps has added up to an
estimated carbon saving of more than 250 tonnes per year, along with
a 15 per cent reduction in energy against an optimised new store.
Co-operative Group
1 Angel Square
The retailer’s suite of techniques at its new HQ is expected to reap
substantial carbon benefits once fully operational. The building
was designed for a maximum energy consumption of 150 kW/sq m
and to deliver a DEC A-rating when in operation. Features include
trigeneration, supplementary hydrocarbon chillers, ‘subterranean
NATIONAL RETAILER
OF THE YEAR
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Asda
Asda’s SMART strategy – standing for simple, measurable, achievable,
repeatable technology – was widely praised by the judges for its
thoroughness. Where others have committed to widespread pursuit
of alternative refrigerants, Asda has opted to focus on improved
engineering, better design and installation and new componentry to
cut leakage and reduce carbon. Refrigeration energy consumption
for a new store is now half of its 2005 baseline and leakage is now at
2.6 per cent – down from 22 per cent. And all the while, the store is
piloting new techniques, from ducted air cabinets to, shortly,
HFO refrigeration.
FINALISTS
Co-operative Group
The Co-operative this year impressed the judges with a range of
imaginative installations and the success of its bold carbon cutting
strategy. From Archimedean screws to glycol circuits to extensive
glass door fitting, the retailer has achieved a massive energy reduction
of 12 GWh a year across its estate. And its head office, cited elsewhere,
looks set to provide another cooling benchmark.
Waitrose
Waitrose has won in this category’s previous guise for its rewriting
of the rule book on store refrigeration and this year it has set out
on another innovative direction with its trials of HFO chillers. The
retailer’s willingness to experiment in the cause of lower carbon
