About Us
Visit Peak District & Derbyshire Destination Management
Organisation (DMO) is a public/private sector partnership,
supported by all the local authorities in the Peak District &
Derbyshire, and committed to the successful and sustainable
development of tourism and the visitor economy.
Our Vision is:
To maximise tourism’s contribution towards the economy,
employment and quality of life within the
Peak District & Derbyshire.
Our aim
Looking Forward to 2012/13
…
04
To grow the value of domestic and business tourism
in the Peak District & Derbyshire by 5%
Our Key Objectives are to:
• Offer a compelling destination of distinction through the
development of a sophisticated ‘Attract’ strategy
• Complement the attract strategy with an innovative
‘Dispersal’ Strategy offering reasons to stay longer and
repeat visit
• Continually improve engagement with the private sector
and increase investment from industry players
• Become the main marketing promotor for festivals and
events in Derbyshire
• Grow business tourism in Derbyshire, by attracting more
conferences, exhibitions and meetings
• Focus marketing campaigns during shoulder periods
to create sustainable economic growth for tourism
businesses over twelve months of the year.
Visit Peak District
& Derbyshire
We look forward to 2012/13 with great
excitement as we drive ahead to take
advantage of our ‘Destination of Distinction’
badge to ensure that the Peak District
competes on the national and international
stage.
Our core funding requirements continue to
focus our minds for our financial sustainability
and the continued support of every local
authority in our destination is vital for not only
our survival but our development. Private
sector income is certainly a major priority as
we see public contributions put under severe
pressure year on year.
Our strategy of ‘attract and disperse’ leading
with the Peak District brand has seen new
strategic partners such as Sheffield City,
Cheshire East Council and Kirklees Council
join us which is excellent news. We are now
recognised by Visit England for our ‘cross
border’ work and as such regarded as one of
only 4 ‘Pathfinder’ DMO’s in England. Quite
an achievement for an organistion only
6 years old.
From Visit England’s own research, the
Peak District is now ranked as the 6th most
appealing destination in England so we are
well on target to be recognised as a world
class tourism destination.
David James CEO of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire
DMO with Lady Cobham, Chair of Visit England
We are piloting work under our dispersal
strategy and we look forward to reporting on a
number of new initiatives next year which will
hopefully see visitors staying longer and repeat
purchasing our destination.
Membership is now at the very heart of what
we do and from April 2012 to work with us
and advertise with us, membership is a
prerequisite. Our aim is to attract over 500
members in 2012/13 and also see new supplier
members benefit from our work. In addition, we
are approaching select people and businesses
to become Patrons and we were delighted that
the Duke of Devonshire became our very first
Patron this year.
I have no doubt that 2012/13 will be a
challenging year but we are ‘up for it’, and look
forward to spreading the word, to the world,
that our destination really is a destination of
distinction to compare with the very best in
the world.
The Visit Peak District & Derbyshire destination management
organisation (DMO) is a private and public sector partnership,
led by a commercially focussed private sector, and reliant
upon financial support from our partners and members, who
contribute membership fees and advertise in our publications
and websites.
This private sector income is the vital catalyst to attracting
public sector support and sponsorship income from large
commercial partners. The graphs on the facing page
demonstrate the importance we attach to marketing, and how
we spend the membership fees and advertising revenues
we receive. 65% of our entire income is spent encouraging
people to stay here, explore more and come back again.
We have ambitious targets for the future as we establish
ourselves as England’s Great Outdoors. We want to lengthen
our holiday season, attract visitors from further afield and
continue to improve the prospects and opportunities for
everyone involved in tourism in the Peak District & Derbyshire.
DMO marketing efforts to attract visitors
to the Peak District area is only part of the
story. Once guests have arrived the DMO
works hard to encourage them to stay
longer, see more, and search out the hidden
corners of the region so that the economic
benefits of tourism are spread across as
Dispersal activities include the distribution
to supplement the existing tourist information
highlighting special anniversaries and events. In 2012 Peak District film locations, festivals and customs and
case study
Country Walking Magazine
25th Anniversary Issue
Visit Peak District & Derbyshire has built close
PR links with Country Walking – Britain’s bestselling
walking magazine – over the past three
years. The magazine has run regular feature
articles focusing on the Peak District, and has
also given prominent coverage to the area’s
annual Walking and Outdoor Festivals.
In spring 2012 this relationship was cemented when
Country Walking chose the Peak District as the
location for a new walk to celebrate the magazine’s
25th anniversary. The area was selected because
the magazine’s research reveals it is consistently the
most popular walking area for its readers, and also
thanks to the solid working relationship with
the DMO.
Country Walking devised the route - the 27-mile
White to Dark Way, from Bakewell to Hope – then
met with the Chief Executive and Marketing and PR
team at Visit Peak District & Derbyshire to transform
it into a major project that would benefit local
tourism businesses and boost the economy.
The DMO provided extensive details of local
accommodation providers, attractions, pubs,
cafés, tea rooms, food and drink businesses and
interesting people to meet along the way. Many of
these were included in the finished feature article,
which ran over 15 pages, plus a cover shot of
Monsal Viaduct and gated A4 pull-out leaflet, in the
May 2012 issue of Country Walking. A further 50,000
of the leaflets publicising the walk went out to tourist
information and visitor information centres.
Dispersing
Visitors
The DMO’s marketing approach is
one of attract & disperse - attracting
visitors with an iconic and instantly
recognisable Peak District
destination, then dispersing them
throughout the area encouraging
them to participate in its many
varied products and experiences.
The organisation’s Visitor Dispersal Plan is designed to
complement the Marketing Strategy, being the other half of this
‘attract and disperse’ approach. Its objectives are:
1. To increase visitors’ levels of product awareness and
knowledge to encourage wider participation, longer stays, repeat
visits and increased spend.
2. To encourage those already visiting the Peak District (as the
attract destination brand) to discover and explore surrounding
areas.
We aim for both of these to be achieved through ‘wise growth’-
tourism that minimises the impact of visitors on the surrounding
environment.
brochure distribution
With around 350,000 Welcomes and map guides printed in 2012,
brochure distribution has become an important part of the DMO’s
work, with £15-20k allocated to the operation. Our publications are
now widely distributed in partnership with local TICs, libraries and
through private sector distributors to nearly 500 venues and sites
across the Peak District & Derbyshire – everything from cafes and
bars, to pubs, campsites, hotels, libraries, bus and railway stations.
local events
Large outdoor events provide a great opportunity to meet visitors
face to face and to ‘upsell’ the destination’s many tourism attractions
and products, as well as distribute tens of thousands of brochures
into eager hands. In the past, the DMO has held successful
exhibitions at the Derbyshire Food & Drink Fair and Bakewell Show
– this year Visit Peak District & Derbyshire will for the first time be
exhibiting at the three day Chatsworth Country Fair which has a
potential audience of 90,000 people.
Explore More
Central to the dispersal activity is the new Explore More family of
map guides, designed to encourage visitors to stay longer and do
more. 2012 saw the launch of the first four brochures – Things to
See and Do, Festivals and Events, Well Dressings and Gardens,
and Market Town Experiences – with around ¼ million copies
being distributed to visitors throughout the area this year.
visitor information points (vips)
In the Peak District & Derbyshire, there is a well-established network
of TICs and visitor centres in a wide variety of locations. But as the
emphasis shifts towards taking information to the visitor, there is an
opportunity for a wider range of ‘contact points’ to emerge, including
visitor attractions, shops, restaurants, pubs and petrol stations who
are keen to provide visitor information as part of their service. As
a first step in 2012, the DMO is co-ordinating a ground-breaking
project in partnership with the British Beer & Pub Association,
establishing VIPs in 15 rural pubs across the Peak District.
As there are transmission problems with many mobile web
applications in much of the Peak District a new Destination ‘App’
designed for both I Phone and Android will become a key part of the
DMO’s Dispersal Plan in 2012-13. We anticipate widespread support
from the local tourism sector to promote the App to both staying and
day visitors. Its main purposes will be:
• to link attractions and activities which are related
by theme or interest
• to provide visitors with up-to-date information on local events
• to promote attractions and activities near to where
a visitor is located
• to inspire visitors to explore more, and to try new activities
Reassuringly Popular
– Our Flagship Publication
Although the DMO increasingly uses digital media,
websites and social networks, a printed guide or handbook
generates sales for advertisers, helps to reinforce the
excitement of a holiday in the area and plan must-see lists
in advance for many of our target markets.
We print more than half a million copies of publications a year,
with an estimated readership of almost 2 million.
Most guides are produced towards the end the year, in
preparation for a New Year campaign. Space in popular guides
is limited and over subscribed so please reserve early to
guarantee a position.
Some DMO guides and magazines attract visitors from the UK
and overseas whilst others disperse visitors around Derbyshire
and the wider Peak District. Publications that attract visitors
tend to be grouped into themes (eg Royal Peak / Metro Peak /
Lights Camera Action), whilst dispersal publications are usually
divided into geographic areas. Most guides and maps have
advertising opportunities on them, ranging from £45 to £4,500
for the back cover of the Peak District Visitor Guide.
