National Curriculum Overview
Pupils are assessed throughout their education, starting with National
Curriculum assessments (SATs) at the end of KS1 and KS2. Similar
tests were sat by 14 year olds at the end of KS3 but these tests were
abolished by the government in 2008. GCSEs are taken by 16 year
olds at the end of KS4 and AS and A2 exams by 17 and 18 year olds
in years 12 and 13.
Recent Changes to the National Curriculum
Key Stage 3 (11-14)
Following the abolition of KS3 SATs in 2008, schools are no longer
required to set National Tests at the end of Year 9 for external
marking. They are however required to assess pupil attainment
levels. Teachers have told us that some of the main challenges they
currently face are decisions surrounding assessment now that the
statutory KS3 national curriculum tests have been abolished. Our KS3
publishing covers the content of the Programmes of Study and the
learning objectives of the renewed Frameworks to provide reliable
support regardless of the assessment approach teachers choose.
All our KS3 resources can be used to reinforce learning, for revision
and practice ahead of in-school tests or to generate evidence of
attainment for periodic APP assessment.
GCSE (14-16)
New specifications for GCSE Science were introduced in September
2011. Students who started Year 10 in September 2011 will follow
the new curriculum, whilst those in Year 11 will continue to follow the
old specification through to their exams. Our new GCSE curriculum
guides are clearly marked within the catalogue.
