Indigenisation levy looms
for struggling Zimbos
EVERSON MUSHAVA
CHIEF REPORTER
YOUTH, Indigenisation and Economic
Empowerment minister Francis Nhema
has said the government is mulling the
introduction of an indigenisation levy to
support the drive to economically empower
blacks.
This comes a few days after Transport
minister Obert Mpofu announced that
government had doubled tollgate fees.
Speaking at a Sapes Trust-organised indigenisation
forum in Harare on Thursday,
Nhema said the money realised from the
levy would, among other things, be channelled
to vocational training centres to
help train people manage their businesses.
“I think what I am going to say here
might cause you discomfort, but I am
thinking of introducing an empowerment
levy so that we can empower our people
to create their own wealth,” he said.
“We cannot continue distributing what
we have already distributed. We need to
create new wealth.”
Zimbabwe is currently experiencing
an economic meltdown with critics saying
the government’s empowerment laws
were scaring away foreign investors.
According to the country’s indigenisation
laws, foreign-owned companies
should cede 51 % of their shares to indigenous
Zimbabweans.
However, Nhema later tried to tone
down after being pressed to elaborate on
the proposed indigenisation levy, saying
he had made the statement jokingly as
he has not yet tabled the proposal before
Cabinet.
He said government would
1 dead, 17 injured
in kombi crash
STAFF REPORTER
A KOMBI, whose driver was suspected
to be drunk, was yesterday
involved in an accident which
killed one person and left 17 others
injured at Snake Park along the
Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The kombi belonging to CC
Tours had 21 passengers and was
travelling from Norton to Harare.
According to witnesses, the
driver of the kombi, who allegedly
had a bottle of brandy on
the dashboard, lost control of the
vehicle when it started swerving.
The kombi then overturned before
sliding for over 100 metres and
then landed in a ditch.
The 17 injured passengers were
ferried to hospital in ambulances
and private vehicles. A NewsDay
crew saw police officers who attended
to the scene, retrieving a
half-full bottle of Viceroy Brandy
from the kombi’s dashboard.
The police officers were also
busy trying to establish the identity
of the deceased woman, while
the 17 injured passengers, including
the driver and the conductor
had been rushed to hospital.
Agnes Segweni (50), from Katanga
suburb in Norton said the
driver was speeding. “The driver
was speeding and lost control. The
kombi started swerving before
landing by the side and it glided for
over 100 metres,” Segweni said.
Two other passengers concurred
with Segweni that the
kombi was speeding.
“Most passengers were seriously
injured, especially on the
side the kombi glided on,” said
one of the passengers who refused
to identify himself.
Another passenger said initially
the Kombi had 22 passengers, but
one had disembarked earlier protesting
against the speed at which
the vehicle was being driven.
Zimbabwe Republic Police
national traffic spokesperson Inspector
Tigere Chigome was not
answering his phone yesterday.
The accident comes a few
weeks after 10 people perished
along the Chitungwiza road when
an inexperienced Kombi driver
rammed into a tree close to Chinhamo
service station.
National hero Shamuyarira to be buried today
EVERSON MUSHAVA
CHIEF REPORTER
VETERAN nationalist, Zanu PF politburo
member and former Cabinet
minister Nathan Shamuyarira,
who died at Westend Clinic in Harare
on Wednesday after a long illness,
has been declared a national
hero.
According to national broadcaster
ZBC, Shamuyarira, who was
Heroes’ Acre.
Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare
SENIOR PARLIAMENTARY
REPORTER
MOST houses in the high-density
areas do not have title deeds since
independence, former Zanu PF
Minister Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana
revealed.
He said this on Thursday while
addressing delegates at a conference
on constitutionalism that
was organised by Crisis Coalition
of Zimbabwe in Harare.
Mangwana, who is former Copac
co-chairperson, now runs a
non-governmental
organisation
called Zimbabwe Property Own-
ers Trust.
He said the new Constitution
adequately dealt with the area of
human rights, but there was no
enforcement to the extent that
in independent Zimbabwe
owners of houses in high
density areas still did not
have title deeds.
Mangwana said it was
embarrassing that after independence
the country still
discriminated its own citi-
zens by denying them title deeds.
According to Mangwana, the
former Ministry of Constitutional
Affairs should have been allowed
to continue to exist to ensure that
the rights of people as enshrined
in the constitution — including
the rights to shelter — were
implemented.
“On human rights, it is surprising
that since 1980
houses
in
the high
density
areas
have no
title
deeds
and live
in
rented houses– and how do we
talk of empowerment when there
is discrimination of our people,”
he said.
“This is discrimination in terms
of social status because people in
the low density areas are the ones
that have title deeds, and that
kind of discrimination is not acceptable
in a country which has
been independent for 30 years.”
Mangwana said some high
density dwellers had stayed in
their houses for more than 60
years without title deeds.
“That is why I ended up joining
civic society to ensure people
know their rights to property.
Today I am speaking to you as a
common citizen and
member
of
civic
society,”
he said.
Indigenisation levy looms for struggling Zimbos
the other sectors would be expected
to comply with the 51-
49% threshold in the long run.
Participants urged the minister
to come up with an all-encompassing
and integrated indigenisation
legal framework.
“We are doing away with a
one-size-fits-all indigenisation,”
he said. “We have to be consistent
so that the investor will come
knowing what to expect and not
get surprises. We are not here to
shut down companies or victimise
anyone; it is not in our interest.
We want to engage, but in the
process of achieving our goals,
there are people who might not
understand them and we have
misunderstandings.”
On Wednesday, a Zanu PF politburo
meeting is said to have
ordered Nhema to align the indigenisation
regulations to make
them investor-friendly.
The introduction of the empowerment
levy is set to erode the
already burdened workers’ disposable
income.
PHYLLIS MBANJE
STAFF REPORTER
HARARE residents are up in arms
with the municipality over inflated
water bills despite previous
assurances that the billing system
was being put in order.
Scores of people have been receiving
shocking bills as high as
$400 per month due to a shambolic
billing system fraught with
errors.
A few weeks ago council employees
went about switching off
water for defaulters. But residents
are maintaining that the incorrect
billing and erratic water supplies
was discouraging them from
meeting their obligations.
“How am I supposed to pay for
water that I have not used? My
current bill is $435. I have no arrears,
but the charges started going
up in February,” said Malvin
Chigaira from Dzivarasekwa who
claims that his small family is incapable
of using that much water.
Council has over the years
failed to rectify its billing system
along with the provision of clean
water on a regular basis.
“We are being charged exorbitant
amounts for this filthy water
that I cannot even use for washing
plates,” said Sekai Gutuza from
Westgate area D.
Although Harare City spokesperson
Leslie Gwindi could not
be reached for comment, another
official said residents should
clarify their bills with the Rowan
Martin staff.
A recent Environmental Management
Agency survey revealed
that municipalities countrywide
were leading in compromising the
quality of drinking water.
Harare City Council was topping
the list and was said to discharge
3 885 megalitres of raw
sewage into water sources per day.
Meanwhile in a question and
answer session recently, Harare
Water director Christopher Zvobgo
said efforts were being taken to
address water pollution and improve
water supply.
“Council has always been
aware of the water pollution challenges
in the catchment. Council
has a trade waste inspectorate
which monitors industrial discharges
into sewers and the environment,”
he said.
“The legal framework needs to
be tightened to allow for prosecution
of offenders and should be
uniformly applied across all local
authorities in Zimbabwe.”
Zvobgo said council had engaged
the business community
with regards to construction of
pre-treatment facilities at their
premises before the effluent is
discharged into sewers or the
environment.
Speaking on water supply,
Zvobgo said the main treatment
plant, Morton Jaffray, was operating
on average at 70 % capacity
due to some treatment and
pumping units that have been
decommissioned. This will allow
for installation of new equipment
under the two facilities currently
running.
“Water supply improvements
are expected in August 2014 when
the first consignment of pumps is
expected under the Zimfund facility,”
he said.
Council has over the
years failed to rectify its
billing system along with
the provision of clean
water on a regular basis.

SA crash pilot
jailed 7 years
CHARLES LAITON
SENIOR COURT REPORTER
A SOUTH African millionaire who
recently crashed his helicopter in
Gwanda was yesterday slapped
with a seven-year jail term for
violating the country’s airspace
and tampering with the nation’s
security systems.
Fredrick Wilhelm August Lutzkie
will, however, serve an effective
three-and-a-half-year jail
term after Harare provincial magistrate
Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe
suspended half of the sentence on
condition of good behaviour.
Chikwekwe said he had been
fair enough and exercised mercy
in passing sentence in view of the
fact that Lutzkie was a danger to
Zimbabwe’s security.
The magistrate further said despite
the fact that Lutzkie (52) was
a rich man, he would not be allowed
to use his cash in tampering
with the country’s sovereignty.
“There is nothing that can stop
the court from presuming that
the accused could have smuggled
gems and even weapons in
and out of this country during the
time that he illegally entered this
country via airspace,” Chikwekwe
said.
“He is a danger, not only to
himself, but to us all. The court
cannot rule out money laundering
by the accused and smuggling
of contraband. He has not been
denied a chance to invest in this
country by following proper procedures.
One who can smuggle
the money into the country cannot
fail to do the same and smuggle
it out in the same manner. We
cannot allow our own security to
be undermined.”
The magistrate further said the
helicopter that crashed in Zimbabwe’s
land was going to be forfeited
to the State.
Prior to sentencing, Lutzkie,
through his lawyer Vonai Majoko,
pleaded with the court to consider
the option of a fine saying he had
handed himself over to the Zimbabwean
authorities after he had
informed them of the crashed
plane.
Lutzkie said he had some business
investment in Zimbabwe and
had paid more than R23 million
in his joint venture with Gwanda
Rural District Council.
Lutzkie, who was arrested on
Monday this week, pleaded guilty
to 14 counts of contravening sections
of the Civil Aviation Act and
the Immigration Act.
Prosecutor Michael Reza said
during the period extending from
February 1 to 28, Lutzkie flew his
helicopter from South Africa and
landed at Doddiebun Range in
Gwanda where he runs a game
farm. The court heard that during
the material times, he was flying
without permission from the Civil
Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe
in accordance with the terms
and conditions specified by the
authority.
But on the day in question Lutzkie,
who is an engineer by profession,
said the helicopter developed
a mechanical fault and
crash-landed prompting him to
dig a trench and bury it for fear of
an explosion.
This, he said, was done in order
to cut oxygen supply to the plane
since it had more than 500 litres
of Jet A1 fuel. He told the court
he had previously flown into the
country undetected on two other
occasions.
‘Donor-funded drugs pose security risk’
FELUNA NLEYA
STAFF REPORTER
THERE is need for government
to urgently come up with a solution
to buy its own drugs as it is
a security risk to have more than
90% of the drugs in the country
being donor-funded, an official
has said.
Speaking after touring the
government-owned National
Pharmaceutical company of Zimbabwe
(NatPharm) on Thursday,
Health and Child Care minister
David Parirenyatwa said although
the government drug warehouse
was full, the medicines were secured
through donor funds.
“The warehouse if full. We can
say 92% of our drugs are donorfunded
and that is always a security
risk for a country like Zimbabwe,”
Parirenyatwa said.
“So for a country like ours to
have 92% of your drugs donor
funded calls out for the government
to do something urgent
about it, to be able to purchase
our own drugs as a matter of
priority.
If the donors are giving us
something to cover like ARVs and
others then we should have money
to also go for those pertinent
areas that are missing.”
Tenant bites landlord’s lip in brawl
A 34-YEAR-OLD Chitungwiza
woman was on Wednesday sentenced
to four months in prison
for biting her landlord, causing a
deep cut in his mouth.
Tutsirai Chipaumire, who resides
in Zengeza and is a municipal
police officer at Chitungwiza
Town Council, had her whole
sentence suspended by magistrate
Marehwanazvo Gofa on condition
that she would not commit the
Health minister David Parirenyatwa
same crime in the next five years.
Prosecutor Wilson Matsika
told the court that on Sunday at
around 1200 hours, the accused
started packing up her belongings
as she sought to vacate her current
lodgings.
Chipaumire was asked by her
landlord Emmanuel Shonhiwa
(46) why she had not repaired a
window pane she had broken.
Shonhiwa asked the accused to
leave her table as surety, but she
refused.
He said treasury had managed
to give NatPharm $150 000 and
was hopeful such funding would
come on a monthly or quarterly
basis.
“I am glad that $150 000 has
come to Natpharm and I hope
some more will come every
month so that we boost that,”
Parirenyatwa said.
“I can say the system is not going
down it is picking up, if they
start giving this money then next
month and that will see us pick up
as a country.”
He said Natpharm was s one of
the key institutions in the ministry
and should get funding so that
essential drugs and medical accessories
for the country are purchased
in bulk.
The Ministry of Health owes
NatPharm over $12 million.
Meanwhile, Parirenyatwa also
launched the Ministry of Health
and Child Care website at a local
hotel on Thursday.
The website contains the ministry’s
electronic health records
databases, national health profiles
and health based strategic information
reports collected from
routine programme data collection
and surveys.
The court heard that the accused
had a male companion with
her who identified himself as a
police officer and told Chipaumire
to continue packing her things.
This did not go down well with
the complainant and he started
arguing with the companion.
Chipaumire then ran to the
complainant and bit him on his
mouth, leaving a deep cut and she
jumped the security wall and ran
away. Shonhiwa made a police report
leading to her arrest.
MUTARE — A 26-YEAR-OLD
woman was lucky to escape
jail after she was sentenced to a
wholly-suspended six months
in prison for concealing birth of
an eight-month-old baby.
Betty Mukombero appeared
before Mutare magistrate Sekai
Chiundura on Thursday and was
sentenced to six months in jail.
The sentence was, however,
suspended on condition that
she would not be convicted of a
similar offence in the next five
years.
Charges against Mukombero
were that on June 4 in Dangamvura,
she felt labour pains as she
was eight months pregnant.
She did not seek any assistance
or alerted anyone as she
chose to remain silent and conceal
the birth.
It was the State’s case that she
gave birth to a live baby in her
room.
She then took the baby and
placed it in a plastic paper and
hid it underneath her bed.
She did not tell anyone about
the birth and the child later died.
Thereafter, she went to take
The matter came to light after
another tenant went to take a
The State said she had no right
Fr Oskar Wermter SJ
Leaders are responsible
for those whom they
lead. The lives of the
people are entrusted to
them. The leaders must
create conditions which allow
people to make a living and stay
alive. Of old, chiefs provided food
for the people in times of need
from a granary (zunde raMambo)
for that purpose.
In our day land, manpower,
skills and expertise, as well as investment
capital must be organised
in such a way that the people
use the land productively.
Indigenisation and greater equity
in the distribution of land and
the means of production may be
an excellent long-term goal. But
if it does not provide work for the
workless and give them food, at
least in the short term, then the
welfare of the people may demand
a different strategy.
The people and their welfare,
their sheer survival, come first.
They must not be sacrificed to an
ideology, splendid in itself, but of
little practical value in saving the
people from economic ruin and
starvation.
Leaders with political responsibility
must study these problems
intensively and be engaged with
industrialists, agricultural economists,
trade unions and employers
at all times.
Alas, politicians care little about
the real problems of the country.
With a few laudable exceptions,
most of the time they are busy
fighting each other for top posts.
The struggle for power and the acquisition
of wealth occupy them
much more than the worries of
the people whom they represent.
A true leader must care about
the little people, the ordinary citizens
in town and country. True
leaders must be unselfish. They
must make the worries of ordinary
workers, and even more so of all
who have no work, their very own.
A leader is not one who “has
Distressed people
caught in the middle
A leader is one who does not see old widows and young single mothers sitting as vendors at street corners as a problem of policing and security, of law and order,
but as a human problem
financial worries, with a luxury
car that takes him away from the
people, not to them. Quite the opposite,
true leaders must go out to
the people and share the heavy
PUBLIC NOTICE
OFFER OF PREMISES FOR LEASE
burden of their lives and carry it
with them.
In our Zimbabwean situation,
unemployment, especially of
the youth, must give them a real
Council is not bound to accept the highest bid/offer and reserves the right to accept any bidder who
meets the set conditions.
headache. Old widows and young
single mothers sitting as vendors
at street corners are for them not
a problem of policing and security,
of law and order, but a human
problem. They must feel in
their hearts what life is like for
self-employed women in the informal
sector who have to send
their children to school from the
tiny income they get from selling
vegetables or handicraft or even
themselves at night.
This hopeless situation drives
many across the Limpopo to South
Africa. Having escaped the crocodiles,
they may fall into the hands
of the maguma-guma, robbers
and rapists. Some social workers
of the church, eg nuns, try to help
the shocked economic refugees.
But that can only be First Aid.
A priest friend from Tzaneen
tells me that he has never seen
Zimbabwean leaders seeing for
themselves what happens to their
own people stuck between their
own country that has abandoned
them, and their host country that
does not want them.
Surely our leaders know that it
is two main causes the world over
that drive people into exile: war
and violence, and poverty and
unemployment. Charity, though
welcome in the midst of acute
hunger and misery, cannot solve
the problem. Our economy must
be revived and factory gates must
be reopened, workers must take
up the tools once more and restart
production. Ideological obstacles
must be removed.
The shouting of slogans in support
of one’s own party at the
forthcoming election must stop.
The survival, not just of one’s own
friends and clients, is at stake,
but of the people as a whole, regardless
of their political sympathies.
For such magnanimity and
humanity we need statesmen,
not just party agents, mothers of
the nation, not just female party
propagandists.
It seems our government does
not bother about migrants; “good
riddance” seems to be the feeling
in the corridors of power, though
combined with hoping that eventually
the migrants will send remittances
back to Zimbabwe.
South Africa does not see distressed
neighbours in them, not
even potentially useful workers,
but only troublesome vagrants.
Should not the two countries
come together and negotiate a
solution? Would it not be in the
long-term interest of both countries
to relieve the suffering of
their people, African brothers and
sisters? Is this not the humanism
a people proud of their heritage of
unhu/ubuntu should have?
Is this not the job of Sadc to
bring the two together and assist
them in rebuilding the Zimbabwean
economy, the root cause of
this migration?
It must be in the interest also of
South Africa to restore economic
sanity north of the Limpopo (ignoring
the current economic advantage
for South African business
which sells Zimbabwe what
it cannot produce itself at the
moment).
The people must come first, and
the economy must serve them.

Cossa gives helping hand
to Chegutu orphans
community builders NewsDay saturday june 7, 2014 5
VENERANDA LANGA
SENIOR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER
AFRICAN culture has always regarded any
child as everyone’s child, resulting in people
taking responsibility over extended
families, or even taking an interest in the
lives of other people in their communities.
Although some people are now reneging
from this cultural practice and adopting
foreign cultures where a person only takes
responsibility for their family, a Chegutu
family has instead decided to take responsibility
of many orphans in their locality by
forming a community-based organisation,
Youth4Children.org, to feed and help orphaned
children with different skills.
The organisation was formed in 2013 by a
Zimbabwean female based in South Africa,
Sarah Cossa.
She said it started as a family initiative
when they took in four orphans, but later
grew into a fully registered communitybased
organisation in Pfupajena Township
in Chegutu.
Cossa, a professional counsellor and
founding director of Youth4Children.org,
said she was motivated to form the organisation
many years ago before she moved to
South Africa due to the suffering of many
children which she witnessed in Chegutu.
In 2013, she finally decided to form a
fully-fledged community-based organisation
and got Youth4children.org registered.
“At that time, I never envisaged that I
would end up forming a community-based
organisation to feed more than 400 children
since I did not even have the resources to do
so,” Cossa said.
“Our aim as a family was just to help
children in our neighbourhood who did
not have food, shelter and clothing, but
we later discovered that there were many
more children in Chegutu who needed help
and we formed Youth4Children.org to feed
them and train them in different life skills
such as soccer.”
As a Zimbabwean expatriate now working
in South Africa, Cossa said the remaining
members of her family were involved in
ensuring the organisation moved on.
Apart from members of her family getting
a deep interest in the activities of
Youth4Children.org, she said she managed
to get some volunteers who are also helping
in the feeding scheme for the children
and in teaching the children to do different
activities.
“Our children now number above 400
and our boys have done well in soccer to
the extent that they are now affiliated to the
Under-13 soccer league,” she said.
“The children were also able to participate
in the 2014 Independence Day celebrations
in Chegutu.
“The girls are also involved in activities
such as drummies and traditional dance.”
Cossa said her organisation had been
sustained by well-wishers who donated
food and clothing for the children who did
not have boarding facilities, but attended
to be fed and to get involved in activities
spearheaded by the organisation.
“We continue looking for support from
well wishers and we have managed to secure
a place at a government school where
our children do different activities like
sports every Saturday.
“Recently, the Municipality of Chegutu
also allocated land to us for establishment
of a community garden. We also receive
weekly donations of bread from Koshen
Bakery to feed our children,” she said.
She said some of the items that were
needed for the children included sanitary
pads for girls, soccer kits for the boys and
netball kits.
“We have also approached our local
[Chegutu West] MP Dexter Nduna [Zanu
PF] to assist with the drilling of a borehole
at the garden that we were offered by the
municipality and to help us with the erection
of a fence and a security guard at the
garden,” she said.
The legislator, Nduna, said the Youth-
4Children.org project was a good community
initiative because it kept the children
off the streets.
“One should watch these children doing
different activities and you will understand
that it is necessary to have projects for underprivileged
children so that they do not
resort to criminal activities,” Nduna said.
“I hope a lot of wellwishers will come
up to support the project in Chegutu in cash
and in kind.”
The Chairperson
of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, Mrs Justice Rita Makarau,
Craft specific law
to punish
child abusers
YesterdAY we carried a story under the title:
Grade 6 pupil falls pregnant, in which we reported
that a 12-year-old Mt Pleasant pupil had dropped
out of school after sexual abuse that resulted in
her falling pregnant.
Hardly a day passes without reports about sexual abuse
where children, especially girls, fall prey to child molesters.
Recently, we have also witnessed a growing trend where
young boys are sodomised by some sexual perverts.
Judging from reports, the adult perverts range from young
men of 18 to octogenarians who should know better. This
means children need protection from paedophiles of all ages
across all sections of society.
The continued sexual abuse of children shows that the current
punitive measures are not deterrent enough.
Children are abused under different guises and these include
the “need” to follow religious and traditional practices.
We have many known religious cults in the country that are
specialists in child abuse.
Despite the fact that such sects are known, nothing is done
about them. They even have the audacity to marry off underage
girls in broad daylight.
Children, because of their age and limited knowledge of the
world, cannot successfully mobilise and lobby against abuse.
Although the responsibility to protect these young souls lies
squarely on the shoulders of every adult in society, the government
should take a leading role.
It is high time we had legislation specifically to deal with
child abuse.
This type of legislation should be in the mould of the Domestic
Violence Act that women organisations pushed for. It
is equally important that we have a specific law that protects
children as children.
It is not enough to have laws that protect children from
abuse couched in laws that have to do with adults. Legislation
targeting child abusers should have serious punitive measures
that include life imprisonment.
We need specific legislation that targets paedophiles. This
may make those who want to abuse young children think
twice.
What is also worrisome is that the majority of child abusers
are either relatives or people who are known to the children.
This shows premeditation on the part of the abusers.
It is notable that most of the abusers who appeared in the
courts of law hardly showed any remorse for their actions.
Most have given flimsy excuses for their deeds. They seemed
not to care a hoot about the subsequent trauma their victims
would suffer for life.
Hence it is important that new legislation be crafted to severely
punish paedophiles or to lock them away for life.
Laughter is the best medicine for us all
A
Westlea
man
known as Madzibaba
Chacha has allegedly
been arrested following
publication of
his picture dressed in a police uniform
that was posted on various
social networks.
The picture appears with different
captions ranging from
commissioner-general Madzibaba,
conqueror of the police force
and many others.
This is, however, a continuation
of the humour that has been
coined or created by various people
ever since the day policemen
were sent onto their heels by
angry members of the Johanne
Masowe sect in Budiriro that was
being accused of violating women
and girls rights.
Bishop Johannes Ndanga, president
of the Apostolic Christian
Council of Zimbabwe that governs
operations of apostolic churches,
had gone there in the company of
police details and members of the
media to announce a ban on church
activities on that piece of land.
The Vapostori members led by
a Madzibaba Ishmael who is still
at large, reacted violently and descended
on the entourage resulting
in serious injuries to a Zimbabwe
Broadcasting Corporation
(ZBC) cameraman who fell down
and received a thorough beating
from the marauding men in white
garments.
The camera person sustained
serious fractures in both hands.
However, these events have
created a humorous platform by
people from different walks of life
stemming from this incident.
It all started when Augustine
Chihuri, the Zimbabwe Republic
Police Commissioner-General,
passed out at a pass-out parade
where President Robert Mugabe
was officiating. He was later to
apologise to the President for this
embarrassing episode which sent
Zimbabweans into a frenzy of humorous
articles and caricatures.
Chihuri said he had mistakenly
worn two different size boots, a
size six and a size nine and hence
the reason why he collapsed.
But someone on social networks
had this to say: “He should
sue Zesa for load-shedding that
resulted in him picking the ‘banana’
pair in the dark . . .”
“Banana pair” refers to shoes
that are always worn by little children
on the wrong sides giving the
shoes a banana shape.
“I can’t believe that a police
general wears his shoes (the banana
way) like a two-year-old
baby. . . ” screamed another one.
Just as readers were getting
over the drama on Chihuri did this
one of the Vapostori sect get into
travelling drive gear.
There is one that I thoroughly
enjoyed that went like this . . . “I
was stopped by a team of cops at a
roadblock along Seke Road when
one of them noticed that I had a
shepherd’s staff on the dashboard
of my car. The cops bolted in all directions,
leaving their ticket book
and other items on the tarmac . . .”
The shepherd staffs were the
weapons used to clobber the policemen
that fled the shrine in
Budiriro, and these were captured
so well by the news media.
The impressions created by
members of the public were that
these Vapostori were a stronger
force than the ZRP which is legally
in place to protect everyone from
harm.
Saturday Dialogue
Ropafadzo Mapimhidze
The arrested bearded man is
apparently a tailor who was stitching
that uniform which he put on
and had a photograph taken and
posted on social networks with a
caption that read as commissioner
general Madzibaba . . .
This inferred that Vapostori
can make a better police force using
the shepherd staffs’ than the
present one under Chihuri’s authority
that carry guns. This was
so amusing, but something, however,
caught my attention.
How did this fella get the uniform
which he was apparently
stitching at his business concern?
Is it not true that these uniforms
are property of the State
which can only be tailored by
contracted firms identified by the
ZRP? I found this rather strange.
These humorous articles keep
the nation in laughter especially
these days when everyone seems
to be weighed down with effects
of a melting economy.
This has brought out so much
creativity which I think should
be tapped for television or street
theatre purposes.
Not a day passes without seeing
one of two caricatures or jokes
about the Budiriro fracas.
But it would seem as though
authorities are not tolerant to such
creativity as this is deemed as provoking
the status quo.
Recently, Freshlyground, a
South African funk musical band
that was billed to perform at closure
of this year’s edition of the
Harare International Festival of the
Arts (Hifa), was deported because
authorities perceived the group as
having mocked Mugabe in one of
their productions titled Chicken to
Change. The satirical musical cartoon
strip created by famous cartoonist
Zapiro is very funny and
speaking from an artist’s point
of view; this video clip I think is
just comical and not aimed at demeaning
the President.
Zimbabwe is generally intolerant
to artists that express themselves
through visuals and other
forms of art resulting in a handful
of artists getting arrested for expressing
political issues through
art and music.
Some songs by local artistes
have also been banned on local
airwaves and yet these satirical
messages just give us time to reflect
and also admire the creativity
involved in such productions. It is
also an outlet to release the steamy
tensions and stressful situations
that the majorities are facing.
Zimbabwe has so much talent
in the form of humour and
all those that have smart phones
can agree with me that this talent
needs to be tapped and marketed.
We are too serious a people that
are at loss given the serious economic
problems Zimbabwe is faced
with . . . and yet humour is an outlet
that is calming and therapeutic. I
have laughed so much over the past
week over these funnies.
I am sure we are all familiar
with phrase that “laughter is the
best medicine”.
Humour and the sound of roaring
laughter is far more contagious
than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze.
Yes, laughter also triggers healthy
physical changes in the body.
Research has proved that humour
and laughter strengthens the
immune system, boosts energy,
diminishes pain, and protects us
from the damaging effects of stress.
We are a happy people, aren’t
we? And best of all, laughter and
humour is free.
Parliament
is just
too big
I AM one of the many people who
viciously spoke against a brimming
Parliament during the Constitutional
Parliamentary Committee
(COPAC)’s outreach process
of constitution-making.
I felt vindicated when I read in
State media that Members of Parliament
(MPs) were borrowing to
attend Parliament sittings. What
I highlighted then as the consequences
of an overstaffed parliament
are exactly what is unfolding.
Our Parliament is just too big
considering our population and
the ailing economy. It’s shocking
that the countries which have better
economies and bigger populations
have lean parliaments. A
close scrutiny of the sizes of parliaments
cited in the State media in
proportion to the population represented
can illustrate how bloated
our Parliament is.
Each MP in South Africa represents
130 000 people while the
Zimbabwean MP stands for just
40 000. The ratios of an MP to the
populace in Angola, Mozambique
and Zambia are 1:81 818, 1:96 000
and1:81 250 respectively. India
has a ratio of 1: 1 518 987. China,
the largest country in the world
with a population of over 1,3 billion
and gross domestic product
of over $1,7 trillion, has the largest
parliamentary body in the world
which stands at 2 987 MPs. The ratio,
however, is 1:468 697.
These countries can afford
to pay their legislators and give
them resources needed for their
operations.
With our big Parliament, MPs
have gone for 15 weeks without
Chunga is best coach around
•In response to Underfire Chunga
takes charge: Moses Chunga is undoubtedly
the best coach in the land.
People want to tarnish his image by
claiming his responsibility in things
that he would never get into. He has
rescued most clubs from relegation
countless times and still commands
respect among current and retired
players. As a player in the local soccer
league, he holds the record for
the most goals in a season — scoring
46 goals — before he left for Belgium.
He might be arrogant, cocky and
bullish, but he is duly entitled to that
attitude considering the outstanding
records that he has set in his career
as both a player and coach. You could
ask Brenna Msiska how he used to be
constantly embarrassed by Chunga’s
wizardry in most instances at Rufaro
Stadium during the bygone days. I
have every respect for that man because
no other player has matched
fuel and some months without
allowances. Already, Parliament
owes MPs $1,4 million in outstanding
sitting allowances. These
arrears will pile up to the $4 million
outstanding allowances from
the last Parliament.
While our Parliament has been
expanding since 1980, on the contrary,
the economy has been taking
a nosedive. It would be economically
prudent if the number
of legislators commensurates with
economic growth. There is nothing
that the 350 MPs can do that
a good size of 100 MPs cannot do,
especially in urban areas where
their work overlaps with that of
the councillors.
The chief argument behind the
rejection of devolution is the small
size of this country. It defeats that
argument when, on the other
hand, we have an enlarged Parliament,
more so when they are now
salaried.
While it is already too late to
downsize Parliament, such meas-
what he has done in independent
Zimbabwe. Let the king be! His talent
and class on and off the pitch is
unquestionable.
skOBINgo
ure should be considered in the
next Parliament.
Honestly, there is no need for
non-constituency MPs and those
many MPs in cities in an economy
that is ailing.
Parliament should now think
outside the box and devise costcutting
measures.
There are MPs who stay in Harare.
This group of MPs does not
need to be accommodated in hotels,
neither should they be given
accommodation allowances, at
least until our economy is back
on its feet. The Honourable MPs
who are ministers and deputy
ministers should not be given
vehicle loans. This group of MPs
has already received ministerial
vehicles which they can also use
for their constituency duties. The
vehicle loans that are set to be advanced
to the MPs will come from
the same Treasury that purchased
ministerial vehicles for the same
individuals.
In response to What to do with the
‘worryus’, Zifa and it’s technical
team: My real concern dwells on
the technical team and the players.
However, I’m going to touch a bit
on local football governing body
Zifa.
First, it does not suffice to evaluate
individual performances after
the game in what Wellington Toni
called the “verdict” and conclude
the reason for our loss. Modern
football follows a corporate
business-like model. Unless we
model it into a holistic approch,
we’ll continue crying about our
“worryus”.
We might have had glitches
with the players here and there,
but the technical team was at fault
for not being intelligent enough.
Second, here are some tips for
the technical team:
l Being tactically intelligent
means being able to pick a situational
strategy in line with our
game’s objective on the day and
that was to have a two-goal margin.
This meant our mode was
to attack aggressively and score
goals. How? By having a reputable
playmaker in midfield, a floating
striker-cum-midfielder and a
false striker. We needed someone
like Khama Billiat to collaborate
with Ovidy Karuru. The defensive
midfield was OK, Edward Sadomba
was OK and the wing-backs
were not that bad too.
l The coach should have realised
that a football match is like
a business run in 90 minutes and
supposed to realise commercial
success soon after that duration.
Hence, the coach should have
been intelligent enough to estimate
any danger coming by having
a strong contingency plan. He
should not have overestimated or
underestimated a situation. Warriors
coach Ian Gorowa tried to
pump in strikers later in the game,
but the damage had already been
done.
l SWOT analysis: Strength —
We had a good squad except the
perfect diamond midfield. Weakness
— The team’s mental stability
was compromised, ie, they
were under pressure in the home
ground to please the crowd, hence
they tried to be perfect, frustrations
coming from Zifa, playing
to defy history and poor remuneration
all compromised the
psychological welfare of players.
Opportunity — The 12th man was
there 100% and the Taifa Stars
were away. Threats — The constant
thought: “What if we lose? What
about our fans?”
l Zifa should be known by everybody
as a heavy political front.
Our emotions should know how
to handle it well. The only disappointing
thing is it kills the morale
of the players.
It’s imperative that the technical
team should write it in their
hearts that football is about the
teamwork of 11 players.
No player should duplicate
another player’s style or broadband
roles or even use the tactic of
absenteeism.
Players should be called up to
the national squad on merit as well
as relevance to the desired task, of
which that was not observed with
the team that played last weekend.
With these factors, Gorowa
should stay!
Help Douglas get hip replacement
Rumbidzai Kaseke
Editorial Assistant
DOUGLAS Chivere (43), affectionately
known as DJ Dadi Fresh by
those in his industry, suffers from
a left side femoral neck fracture
which occurred in April. His medical
records indicate that because of
this femoral neck fracture, blood
flow is reduced thereby posing a
great risk of not healing hence, the
need for a partial hip replacement.
The father of three who makes a
living as a hired disc jockey on
private events says he has failed to
raise money required for the partial
hip replacement.
Braced with his low-cost and
not so comfortable hand-carved
crutches, Douglas explained to
NewsDay how he cannot walk
without experiencing terrible pain
in his left leg.
“I can not visit the bathroom
without assistance from someone
and at times I don’t have a choice,
but to call one of my children to
help me dress up in the event that
their mother is away,” Douglas
said.
According to the quotation
from the orthopaedic specialist,
Douglas needs a total of $4 449 for
jobs so that she can provide for
her family.
“Nyasha’s condition has made
it difficult to provide for my family
and a wheelchair will make it
easy for me to move around with
him looking for piece jobs as he
requires attention all the time,”
she said.
said Douglas.
Douglas initially sought medical
Young girl with rare skin
condition seeks more help
Ropafadzo Mapimhidze
Features Editor
BRIDGET Mandimutsira, aged five, is
seeking over $25 000 to settle a medical
bill with a South African hospital
where a tumour was removed from
her brain.
Bridget first appeared in NewsDay
in 2010 when she had growths on the
mouth, tongue, nostril and forehead
which were successfully removed at a
hospital in Rhondebosch, Cape Town,
South Africa.
She was only two years old then.
“Following the publication $12 000
was raised last year by various wellwishers
resulting in an operation to
remove another growth from her chin
and tongue.
“What we now need is over
$25 000 to settle the balance for the
procedures so far done, although there
also will be a need for yet another operation
to remove growth on her right
cheek,” Bridget’s mother Benedict
Makumbe who lives in Tafara said.
The young girl, who is supposed to
have started Grade Zero this year, was
not able to because her eyes are badly
affected by the skin condition known
as Xeroderma Pigmentosm according
to a letter from the Red Cross War Memorial
Children’s Hospital in SA.
Xeroderma Pigmentosm is a genetic
skin condition that predisposes her to
multiple skin disorders. According to
the letter from the hospital, Bridget
needs excessive treatment and has an
open arrangement with the hospital
to be treated any time because these
services can only be rendered at this
medical institution.
Bridget’s mother says she has no
means of raising such a huge amount
for these procedures and hence she is
again seeking help from well-wishers
Bridget Mandimutsira
for more funds.
“I am yet to get a quotation for
surgery to remove a growth from her
right cheek and the $25 000 does not
include this procedure. I would like to
thank all the people that have assisted
me so far, but the war is not yet over.
“Bridget spends the day indoors to
avoid sunrays and her eyesight is badly
impaired. It is painful to watch your
own child suffer like this and I am urging
Zimbabweans to assist me during
this time of need.
“I also need money for accommodation
at the hospital which costs
about R41 a day and this is minus food
costs. Bridget attends four clinics a
day these include dental, eye, plastic
surgery and dermatology clinics. I do
not know how long these procedures
will take, but it is such a painful experience
to see your child not growing up
like all other children in the neighbourhood,”
Makumbe said.
All those wishing to assist can contact
Makumbe on (00263) 775820441
Positively impact your generation
DEVOTION
Erasmus Makarimayi
Since creation, humanity has
been working to improve
the quality of life on planet
earth. Much research has
been going on to find ways
of making life better and more enjoyable.
There have even been efforts to
harness other planets to contribute to
the wellbeing of life on earth. Studies
are being carried out to find lasting
solutions to the ills of life. Think
tanks and official bodies have been
established to bring development to
mankind. Mankind is working hard to
live a stress free life. Generation after
generation has come and gone but
the world is still not that perfect. It is
God’s desire for each generation to
better the previous and it is your duty
as an individual to positively change
and transform lives.
While every effort is being put to
better our lives and all possible avenues
explored, it has to be understood
that there will always be forces working
against mankind’s advancement.
Whatever format these negative forces
may take, the root cause remains
the devil, Satan, whose sole mission
is to steal, kill and destroy. A closer
look at life will show that development
has not been that smooth. From
the Stone Age to the current age, the
baton has not always been passed
on successively positively. There are
generations that reduced the speed.
Others destroyed what was accomplished
by previous generations. So
instead of doing what they are supposed
to do to advance, they spend
time rebuilding and restoring. Because
of this, we are not at the stage where
we are supposed to be. We are probably
many generations behind.
Man and woman were created with
assignment in a geographical location.
There are certain geographical
locations that have done fairly well,
but they cannot advance so much
way ahead of others because we are
a global village. Although the first and
second worlds appear so much advanced,
they could have been better if
they carried along the third world and
moved on en masse. It is even worse
for an individual country to seek to
advance outside the collective participation
of its continent. This is better
understood if as an individual you
want to succeed and flourish ignoring
your parents and siblings. You need to
equip and empower them so that your
effect will be multiplied.
As you desire to accomplish everything,
always remember that there
are things you will leave untouched in
your generation. King David wanted to
build a temple for God, but God told
him it was going to be his son instead
who would do that and King Solomon
built the temple after he assumed the
throne. There are things that will never
be accomplished by certain generations.
God works through generations.
He introduced His Son, Jesus in perspective
of generations. Matthew 1:17
supports and says, “So all the generations
from Abraham to David are
fourteen generations; and from David
until the carrying away into Babylon
are fourteen generations; and from the
carrying away into Babylon unto Christ
are fourteen generations.” Discover
what you have to do in your generation
so that you won’t be irrelevant.
Refuse to be a generation of destroyers.
The generations before you
built the Great Zimbabwe monuments.
What have you built? They were
thrown in the reserves and built the
huts were you grew up. Now you have
a farm, what have you contributed?
I always get disturbed when we fail
to resettle a few people at Chingwizi
holding camp that were affected by
Tokwe Mukosi floods. God gave the
children of Israel time to advance
stage by stage. He did not drive out
the former inhabitants of the Promised
Land at once. Exodus 23:29-30
reads, “[29] I will not drive them out
from before thee in one year; lest the
land become desolate, and the beast
of the field multiply against thee. [30]
By little and little I will drive them out
from before thee, until thou be increased,
and inherit the land.” God
is so faithful to give each generation
work to do.
There are things that certain generations
will be denied because they
are wasteful, they squander opportunities.
My advice is that at least
maintain what you inherited then you
can develop it or offer more advanced
options. Receive and pass on the baton
with maturity and responsibility.
God’s first commandment to humanity
calls for productivity. Genesis 1:28
says, “[28] And God blessed them,
and God said unto them, Be fruitful,
and multiply, and replenish the earth,
and subdue it: and have dominion
over the fish of the sea, and over the
fowl of the air, and over every living
thing that moveth upon the earth.”
Contribute positively to your generation.
Don’t destroy the good that was
bequeathed to you. Pass on a good
heritage.
You are going somewhere.
But for Privilege Ramos (37)
from Mutasa District in Manicaland
province, who is serving a
32-month jail-term for attempted
murder, incarceration has come
as a blessing in disguise.
After 17 months behind bars,
Ramos has acquired a life skill of
welding, something that he had
never imagined in his life.
Upon completion of his jail
term, he hopes to start a welding
business of his own and move on
with life.
His story is one of many shared
by other inmates who are receiving
training in various self-sustaining
disciplines offered by the
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional
Services (ZPCS).
Apart from equipping inmates
with life skills, the ZPCS is currently
doing construction work
of different forms in schools and
other institutions in Mutare at a
charge to enable it to generate
revenue so that it sustains itself.
ZPCS superintendent Elton
Gumindega said: “The whole idea
is to turn prisons into a viable
business entity so that we don’t
continuously milk from the fiscus
and that in the long term we
achieve self-sustenance.”
He added: “In the short term
we want to cover running costs
such as repair of our vehicles, fuel
for the courts, stationery and daily
administrative issues.”
Gumindega sad part of the
money will be used to cater for
transport for inmates upon release
in the form of bus fares while the
other will be used to buy small
things such as toiletries, salt or
cooking oil.
The organisation has carried
out renovation and repair work
at Mutare Boys High where the
infrastructure was constructed
as far back as 1950s. It renovated
classroom blocks, ablution facilities
and the canteen as well as repairing
the plumbing system and
fixing burglar bars.
Mutare Boys High School head,
Mathew Tondoya said the ZPCS
had done a splendid work at the
school.
He said the school wasted a
lot of money on some contractors
“bent on making money without
doing proper construction”.
“For other contractors the
work they do will not last for even
two terms and we will be wasting
money in engaging them. This is
quite durable and we are happy
with the work they are doing,” he
said.
ZPSC has also embarked on an
ambitious project at their Prison
Farm to construct a school which
will cater for the children of the
officers and the local community.
ZPSC chief superintendent
Zondai Cleopas Nyatsanza said the
Mutare Farm Prison Junior School
will go a long way in helping both
the local community and prison
officers.
Nyatsanza, who is the Chief
Staff Officer responsible for administration
in Manicaland province,
said it was cheaper for them
as labour was readily available in
the form of highly skilled prison
officers and the inmates.
The inmates manufacture window
frames and doorframes at the
prison.
“We discovered that there are
a number of children within Mutare
Prison Farm who are going
to schools in town because we
have no school here. Equally the
same, the surrounding community
has no school and this one
will be handy to everyone,” said
Nyatsanza.
The school has already been
registered and four teachers were
employed to teach 50 pupils enrolled
in ECD and grade 1.
Besides construction, the ZPCS
is also involved in the rehabilitation
of its female inmates and former
inmates through partnership
with a local organisation called
Gogo Olive.
The initiative, started by Julie
Hagan, is open to vulnerable
women as well as prison inmates
and former inmates.
Hagan said the initiative was
meant to ensure that struggling
women get something out of
working on their own.
For the inmates, they will receive
training during incarceration
and afterwards they will join
others to knit doles which are
marketable in part countries in
the world.
The doles are exported and
on average, the women receive
$180 a month from the sale of the
doles.
TILL DEATH DO US PART . . .
Clemence Chikerema and Nyasha Joseph tied the knot at Aspindale Sports Club on April 26 2014
Rosa Chakwawa (35) who
benefited from the recent Presidential
Pardon said the training
and incorporation she got in the
Gogo Olive initiative had opened
a new lease of life to her.
“When I was released from
prison, everyone welcomed
me here and as you can see it’s
now business as usual as we
are knitting these doles,” said
Chakwawa. “I am managing to
pay for my rent, pay fees for my
children as well as buy food. I
urge all the prison inmates to
take the training they get seriously
as it will be a stepping
stone afterwards.”
Blood clots linked to air pollution
In 2013, air pollution was identified as
a leading environmental cause of lung
cancer and a major contributing factor
in an array of other heart and lung diseases.
New research this week at the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical
Medicine validated these findings and
linked irregular heartbeats and blood
clots in the lungs to air pollution.
Air pollution can occur anywhere
and occurs when any chemical, physical
or biological agent contaminates
the environment. According to the
World Health Organisation (WHO),
stoves in the home, motor vehicles,
industrial facilities and forest fires are
common sources of air pollution.
“Pollutants of major public health
concern include particulate matter,
carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen
dioxide and sulphur dioxide. Both
ambient (outdoor) and household
(indoor) air pollution cause respiratory
and other diseases, which can be
fatal.
“The evidence shows that environmental
risk factors play a role in more
than 80% of the diseases regularly
reported by the WHO. Globally, nearly
one quarter of all deaths and of the
total disease burden can be attributed
to the environment.”
In March, WHO reported that
around 7 million people died in 2012 -
one in eight of total global deaths – as
a result of air pollution exposure. In
2013, they even classified the hazards
of air pollution to be in the same category
as tobacco smoke, UV radiation
and plutonium.
“The new estimates are not only
based on more knowledge about
the diseases caused by air pollution,
but also upon better assessment
of human exposure to air pollutants
through the use of improved measurements
and technology,” explains
WHO.
“Cleaning up the air we breathe
prevents noncommunicable diseases
as well as reduces disease
risks among women and vulnerable
groups, including children and the elderly,”
says Dr Flavia Bustreo, WHO
Assistant Director-General Family,
Women and Children’s Health.
“Poor women and children pay a
heavy price from indoor air pollution
since they spend more time at home
breathing in smoke and soot from
leaky coal and wood cook stoves.”
Blood clots and irregular heart
beats aside, children also experience
more generalised illnesses, such
as bronchitis, asthma and earaches
when exposed to the chemical onslaught
of environmental pollution.
More than 50% of premature
deaths of children under-five are due
to pneumonia that is caused by soot
inhaled from household air pollution.
However, the absolute cause and effect
of pollutants on health is often
impossible to obtain. This is due to individual
differences such as genetics,
one’s overall health, history of exposure
and a pollutants reaction time.
For example, elderly individuals
have often breathed in more pollution
and have a decreased ability to filter
out and dispose of its toxic components.
This is one of the reasons that
the strongest link to blood clots and
irregular heartbeats was seen in the
over-75s and in women.
“Few risks have a greater impact on
global health today than air pollution;
the evidence signals the need for concerted
action to clean up the air we all
breathe,” explained Dr Maria Neira, Director
of WHO’s Department for Public
Health, Environmental and Social Determinants
of Health.
Concerted action from groups, organisations,
schools and businesses
can address the global environmental
issues. Now in its 22nd year, Clean
Up the World, held in conjunction
with the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), mobilises an estimated
35 million volunteers from 130
countries annually, making it one of
the largest community-based environmental
campaigns in the world.
Vultures
Vultures are large birds that eat dead or decaying meat. There are two different groups of
vultures, New World vultures and Old World vultures. All vultures have very good eyesight
and are excellent flyers. They have bare heads, and their feet are big but weak and
flat-nailed, which allows them to walk and to hold onto dead animals. All vultures have a
slightly hooked beak. In some vultures, the beak is very strong and heavy. This is helpful for
tearing hides and meat. Their feathers are brown, black, or white. Most vultures eat many
different foods, including dead meat, garbage, and the waste of other animals. Vultures can
remain in flight for hours, soaring gracefully on long, broad wings. When one bird finds a
dead or dying animal, others fly in from miles away. When feeding, vultures obey a strict
social order based on body size and strength of beak. They always let large mammals, such
as jackals and hyenas, eat first. Vultures do not build nests. Instead they lay their eggs in
trees, in caves, or on the ground. Female vultures lay one or two eggs. The eggs hatch in
seven or eight weeks. The male helps in hatching the young.
12 NEWSDAY SATURDAY JUNE 7, 2014 13
When feminists pontificate to reject fellow women
Yvonne Gasura
WHEN world acclaimed feminists
label other women and self-proclaimed
feminists “terrorists” it
only goes to show that women are
fighting a losing battle. Legendary
feminist scholar Gloria Jean
Watkins, known as Bell Hooks, attacked
artiste Beyonce Knowles
during a panel discussion in New
York, branding her “anti-feminist”
and a “terrorist” because of
her impact on young girls.
Under attack was the sexualised
image of Be-
David Beckham poses
in his underwear
yonce, her posing for Time Magazine
in her delicates, her lyrics and
videos.
She explained: “Wealth is what
so many young people fantasise,
dream about, sexualise, eroticise. . .
and one could argue even more than
her body is what that body stands
for . . . wealth, fame, celebrity — all
the things that so many people in
our culture are lusting for, wanting.
Let’s say if Beyonce was a homeless
woman who looked the same way,
or a poor, down-and-out woman
who looked the same way — would
people be enchanted by her? Or
is it the combination of all of those
things that are at the heart of imperialist,
white supremacist, capitalist
patriarchy?”
Looking at Beyonce, she is a selfmade
artiste and a
powerhouse in
her own right
— that you
cannot take
away from
her. She began
her musical
career at a tender
age, singing at talent
shows until she
and her cousin Kelly
Rowland and
Michelle
Williams
formed
Destiny’s
Child
which
propelled
her to a
solo musical
career
and acting.
Her
music
celebrates
life (I
was
here;
love(Xo), motherhood(Blue; Heaven),
marriage (Cater to you), financial
independence (Upgrade U
(feat. Jay-Z); Independent woman),
female liberation (Run The World
(Girls); Flawless) if one cares to listen
to her lyrics. She is a woman
who has embraced her sexuality
(Partition; Rocket; Drunk in Love).
In the song Flawless (featuring
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie)she
brings out how women have the
world at their feet, but choose to
engage in cat-fights instead of propping
each other up. She urges women
to fight for equality – the right to
education, compete for employment
opportunities and actively engage in
civic matters. She is a role model for
women - she fought for recognition
from a tender age and proved that if
you work hard, keep your eye on the
mark you are bound to succeed. She
has earned her fame and her riches,
so why shouldn’t young black girls
look up to her.
Despite her fame and riches she
got married on her own terms and
fights to keep her marriage intact.
She is not just a feminist, but human
— we thrive on companionship,
we are social beings. Whoever created
humanity knew that they need
the comfort of company and family.
Women are nurturing by nature,
why should one deprive oneself of
that for the sake of radical feminism?
Beyonce and other female artistes
like Madonna and Victoria Beckham
chose to be wives and mothers on
their own terms. Women keep the
world rolling.
Her choreography and costumes
show a woman who has embraced
her femininity, and sexuality and is
not bound by the norms of a conservative
society, a woman who
“owns her body” [Janet Mock]. Her
lyrics have changed with her marital
status. This also determines her target
audience — the mature audience.
When men dance bare-chested,
hug their crotches, pose provocatively
in their boxer shorts it
is “sexy”, when the opposite sex
does the same there is an uproar
the world-over. When Demi Moore
posed in the nude celebrating oncoming
motherhood, she was attacked
by all and sundry, but when
David Beckham modelled his underwear
and posed provocatively
in each and every short praises
were showered upon him. He also
stripped for his perfume advert, but
Bev and the Sexy Angels performing on stage
all people saw was Beckham the
muscular, well-endowed superstar
and loving father. What was the impact
on the impressionable minds of
his young fans? I wonder!
All this is hypocrisy coming from
a society that claims to be democratic,
a society that frolics naked
on beaches and celebrates nudity as
proven by the growing number of
nudists or naturalists in their midst,
a society that crowned Rihanna,
who turned up pretty naked at the
annual Council of Fashion Designers
of America gala in a Swarovski crystal-embellished
see-through gown,
a fashion icon.
As parents, we should educate
our children on the influence of media
on their impressionable minds
and not let the media take the parenting
role.
From time immemorial women’s
bodies were revered and their
beauty celebrated. In Africa women
were the embodiment of spirituality,
fertility and sexuality. That to me is
wielding power and not exploitation.
Society, in Africa, celebrated all this
through dance, which colonialists
viewed as savage and women as too
sexualised. We, as Africans only became
ashamed of our bodies, music,
dance and dressing after colonisation.
We were stripped of our identity.
Women became more oppressed
as the “civilised and Christian” society
assimilated Western ways.
In modern day society female
artistes who are fighting for recognition,
financial freedom and have
embraced their sexuality and are
not afraid to express themselves find
themselves at the centre of criticism
from both men and women.
Locally, innovative artistes like
Sandra Ndebele came under attack
for her seemingly unconventional
costumes and her vigorous dance
moves. Ndebele had found an untapped
market and exploited it and
that is innovation. If we go back in
history her beaded and revealing
costumes came from her roots — the
Ndebele culture. Some Ndebele people
in South Africa still adorn the
same costumes during traditional
marriage rites and weddings. They
are not ashamed of their culture, but
still identify with it, which is liberating.
Sandy is still an internationally
recognised artiste and a self-made
businesswoman.
Zoey and Beverly “Bev” Sibanda
also carved their niche in the entertainment
world — adult entertainment.
The ladies can dance, that we
cannot take away from them. They
have been given all sorts of names
and some pastors also tried to convert
them, free them from their
“lives of sin”. What sin? They are
working women and responsible
employers who do not want handouts,
but seek to earn a decent living
from their sweat. They are women
who have embraced their sexuality,
turned it into art and have chosen
to earn a living from it. They are
not being exploited, but CHOSE that
path. They are artistes, just like Oliver
Mtukudzi, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave,
Beyonce, Shakira
and the Samba-dancing Brazilian
women.
They are not different from yesteryear
Jerusarema/Mbende performers.
We take pride in Jerusarema,
but what was the context of the
dance? It was a fertility dance rich
with sexual connotations. Young
men and women expended their
pent-up desires through that dance.
We appreciate one sexual move and
choose to despise another. If the
defence against attacks on sexually
explicit dances such as Jerusarema
is that they are traditional, then we
can equally argue that we are our
great, great grandchildren’s ancestors
and we should not be stuck in
time, but make our own history.
Since dance evolves, the Zoeys
and Bevs of this world help people
vent those frustrations. They are
not immoral, but are moving
and evolving with time.
No one should be trying
to extricate them from the
shackles of art by labelling
them “sinners”.
They should set targets for
themselves and their crew and
achieve them, polish their act,
go to business school and learn
how they can earn more from
their talent.
When the police harass and
arrest these women, it is victimisation
of all womankind.
Why aren’t the patrons of those
night clubs arrested together with
these artistes? If Beverly breaches
her contract and allows a patron to
touch her, both Bev and the said patron
are guilty of the same offence
and should both be arrested.
We are so bent on being righteous
that we fail to enjoy art and life as it
comes. As women and feminists,
let us positively compete with each
other and the male species. Let’s
not pull each other down, but see
the positive in what each and every
one of us is trying to achieve or has
achieved. And where are the righteous
feminist groups in all this? Are
they also, like the male chauvinists
who arrest Bev, silently
pontificating?
Leaving nothing to the
imagination: Rihanna opted
for just a sheer embellished
backless halter dress which
showed off every inch of her
body as she was honoured
at the CFDA awards
KIDS
The wolf and the crane
Kids Cartoon
ONCE, there lived a greedy
and cunning wolf in a dense
forest. One day, while he was
having his dinner, a bone got
stuck into his throat. He tried
hard to take it out, but couldn’t
succeed in his effort.
The wolf began whining
with pain. The pain was unbearable.
The wolf got worried
and began thinking,
“The pain will subside in due
course. But, what will happen
if the bone doesn't come out. I
won’t be able to eat anything. I
will starve to death.”
The wolf began thinking
of some possible remedy to
overcome theproblem.
Suddenly he recalled that
there was a crane who lived
on the banks of a nearby lake.
He immediately went to the
crane and said, “My friend,
I’ve a bone stuck deep into my
throat. If you could please pull
it out of my throat with your
long beak, I shall pay you suitably
for your help and remain
ever-grateful to you.”
The crane saw his pitiable
condition and agreed to help
him. He put him long beak,
and in the process, half of his
neck also, deep into the throat
of the wolf and pulled the
bone out. The wolf was very
happy to have the bone pulled
out of his throat.
The crane pulling the bone out of the wolf’s throat
“Now pay me my fees, please,”
The crane requested.
“What fees?”, said the wolf.
“You put your head into my
mouth and I let it out safely.
Th a t’s enough of my kindness.
Now get lost, otherwise, I’ll kill
you and eat your flesh.”
REPORTER
WOMEN’S Affairs, Gender and
Community Development Minister
Oppah Muchinguri yesterday
said 33% of females and nine
percent males were experiencing
sexual violence prior to the age of
18 years.
In a speech which was read on
her behalf yesterday by gender
director in the ministry Caroline
Matizha during a march against
child sexual abuse in Harare,
Muchinguri said what was most
appalling about the sexual abuse
cases was that the majority of the
acts were perpetrated by relatives.
The march, which was organised
by the National Council for
the Welfare of Children, saw hundreds
of schoolchildren, women
and men carry placards in the
streets of Harare and sing songs to
denounce the rape of children.
“A number of factors, among
them religion and culture, have
been attributed to the increase in
the number of minor girls that are
raped, and a number of perpetrators
have often come up with
Schoolchildren march against child sexual abuse during an event organised by the Zimbabwe National Council
for the Welfare of Children
lame excuses whenever they are caught on the
wrong side of the law,” said Muchinguri.
“Increasingly, the Internet and mobile
phones also put children at risk of sexual violence
as some adults look to the internet to
pursue sexual relationships with children,”
she said.
Muchinguri said social network platforms
were so abused to the extent children themselves
were also sending each other sexualised
messages or images on their mobile phones
(sexting) which put them at risk of other abuse.
National director of National Council for
the Welfare of Children Taylor Nyanhete said
according to Zimbabwe Republic Police statistics
at least 240 children were sexually abused
monthly, of which 27% of the cases were perpetrated
by neighbours and 41% of the cases
perpetrated by relatives.
An organisation dealing with children,
Childline, also said they attended to 100 cases
of child sexual abuse every month.
“Some abuses happen in the name of religion,
rituals to make people rich or even beliefs
that raping a child can cure infections
such as HIV/Aids. What is needed are support
systems to ensure children are not scared to
report cases of abuse,” said Nyanhete.
Tag a Life director Nyaradzo Mashayamombe
said the country’s laws should be
amended to ensure the age of consent was 18
years.
Child Representative Ellen Kaziweni from
Mabelreign Girls High School handed a petition
to the ministry which called for strengthening
of the protocol on the multi-sectoral
approach to cases of child sexual abuse and
violence.
“The National Prosecuting Authority should
attend to the ever increasing reports of alleged
and unnecessary delays in dealing with child
sexual abuse cases in order to complement
efforts by the ZRP Victim Friendly Unit,” the
petition read.
Getting away….to Meikles!
Pictures: Dusty Miller
With Dusty Miller
FOR the past few weeks,
I’ve been telling readers
about a recent trip to the
Western Cape, courtesy
of KWV wines and spirits
of Paarl, but last week, KWV
came to Harare and their superb
wines were featured in a pairing
session at La Fontaine for the
Meikles Grapevine Club.
Coincidentally I was also invited
to overnight at Meikles in
one of their exclusive and fantastic
Presidential Suites, so travellers to
Harare can learn about what the
capital city can offer.
I was totally stunned by my top
(12th) floor suite and having paced
it out and found it measured a jawdropping
198 sq metres containing
two ginormous bedrooms, two
gleaming bathrooms and separate
toilets, a sitting/meeting/conference
room which could accommodate
major peace talks and a
separate fully equipped glittering
self-contained kitchen, could
hardly wait to gushingly contact
my daughter in the UK.
My luxury suite with magnificent
vistas over Africa Unity
Square from sun-kissed verandahs
was more than double the
size of her lovely little family home
in rural Oxfordshire; possibly the
whole of my Eastlea cottage could
be dropped in the Hollywood style
master bedroom!
Meikles’ friendly staff jokingly
called me “President Miller” as I
swiftly booked in to the US$2 000
a night suite and sure enough I am
president (apparently for life) of
Greendale Good Food & Wine Appreciation
Society and had just left
one of their functions. As we had
a veritable Bacchanalian banquet
slated for the evening,I was glad
Greendale had comprised a light
Chinese meal.
Welcoming drinks in the Can-
Can cocktail bar were elegant
flutes of “bubbly” : Laborie’s
Method Cap Classique blanc-deblanc
(2010), a complex, indulgent
wine showing clarity of fruit on
the nose; hints of lime are accompanied
by aromas of toasted bread
and hazelnut. The palate is creamy,
round and textured with explosive
acidity and lasting finish.
A month earlier I stayed at Laborie
Manor House (vineyard
owned and run by KWV) and,
candidly, I preferred their MCC
Brut, also 2010: more to my particular
palate.
First course was a tiny demitasse
of a wonderful chicken consommé
with ballontine and pastry
fleuron, paired with KWV Cape
Dry, which is what the South Africans
now call Sherry (the real
McCoy can only come from Jerez,
Spain.)
Seared mackerel was a surprisingly
blue-collar fish course
for Meikles, but its smoky rich
oiliness went well with a pickled
cucumber and beetroot dressing
and chilled KWV Cathedral Cellars
sauvignon-blanc (2013), from
which aromas again included
limes and green apples with hints
of spice and tropical fruits.
Main course was a magnificent
melt-in-the mouth tender
The major bedroom in one of Meikles Hotel’s US$2 000 a night 198 sq metre
Presidential Suites
The vista over Africa Unity Square from my 12th floor balcony
Members of the Meikles Grapevine wine-tasting club tucking into the food-and-wine pairing banquet
poached and roasted fillet of beef
with braised white onions and
carrot puree and the splendidly
robust red wine pairing was KWV
Cathedral Cellars Triptych 2011. As
the name implies, three varietals:
cabernet-sauvignon, petit verdot
and Shiraz went into this blend
and it was the traditionally peppery
Shiraz which stood out most
to me. Nowadays I don’t drink a
lot of red, but when I do it’s usually
Shiraz with roasts, stews, games
and particularly meaty curries.
Pudding was described as
chocolate mousseline with blueberries,
but, at our table, alleged
blueberries were definitely delicious
young raspberries (no train
smash!) and with this came a
KWV Classic Cape Ruby (NV), a
drink which used to be called Port
and was beloved, especially in
the bitter winters of British West
Yorkshire, by my paternal grandmother
as a warming drink and
universal panacea.
We finished with excellent
Zimbabwean filter coffee and
“raisin financiers”, a term unknown
by any of the foodies at
our table. Quite delicious, light,
fruity and still warm-to-hot, they
reminded me of mini individual
“spotted dick” steam puds without
the custard!
After much convivial conversation
and congratulating souschef
Kenneth Chikeya, who was
in charge of the grub in the absence
of development chef Rory
Lumsden, and George Thomson,
Lounge/sitting/meeting conference room in the suites
Luscious smoked salmon on the breakfast buffet; I had Scotch kippers
steamed to order with poached eggs and toast
of Cape Wines Ltd in Msasa (Zim
agents for KWV and Bols) who
provided the booze, it was back to
the 12th floor to a comfortable bed
the size of a snooker table, where
I slept as soundly as a security
guard.
One of the great advantages
of booking into a Club Room or
suite at Meikles is that it allows
you unfettered use of the exclusive
Club Restaurant on the 11th
Floor, where standards and levels
of food and service offered often
make competitors’ attempts look
like troopies’ messes!
I always look forward to
steamed or grilled Scottish kippers
there for breakfast and Saturday
morning was no exception,
with lightly poached eggs on toast
after some superb fresh fruit and
before well-made freshly brewed
strong coffee, perusing NewsDay
overlooking much of Harare from
way above the tree canopy.
If you can’t afford to go to the
Cape (and my ticket from KWV
cost them R8 250 when that
was US$825: I could have flown
to London for US$10 more and
Phuket, Thailand* for US$90 less
. . . Southern African airfares are
totally outrageous!) think about a
long weekend, night or even just a
memorably lovely meal at Meikles
Hotel!
I didn’t want to go to Phuket.
I don’t even know how to pronounce
it without making the
Vicar’s wife blush!
Botswana-based Kwaito Kwassa
star Aminoni ‘Mingo’ Mojokeri
has released a compilation project
tiled From Bots to Zim that
features Tsviriyo hit maker, Jah
Prayzah and sensational dancehall
chanter Shinsoman.
The 12-track album is a collaborative
effort that features artistes
from across Southern Africa that
could take Mingo, a gifted lyricist
in his own right, to another level
musically and perhaps help him
build a fan base in Zimbabwe.
Mingo, who at the moment has
five albums under his belt, teamed
up with Prayzah on the track Keya
Gorata, a love song that fuses the
fast pace Kwasa beat with contemporary
sungura.
The song tells a story about the
need to embrace love as it comes
and making your loved ones feel
special all the times. The song was
sung in both Shona and Setwana.
The Tshaba tsotsi hit maker also
worked with dancehall crooner
Shinsoman on the track titled
Basheanyana that was produced
by Hesh Mfesh.
The song fuses the jazzy touch
and dancehall flavour that relatively
brings out a unique musical
feel complemented by the duo’s
lyrical and vocal prowess.
The song reflects back on the
duo’s career and their abrupt rise
to stardom, events that gave rise
to their careers and the entire
spotlight.
Speaking to NewsDay via the
Social Networking site facebook
from his base in Botswana, Mingo
hailed Jah Prayzah as a creative
genius citing him as a peer he always
looks up to musically.
comes to making music and he really
Gifted with a talent of rhyming
fast on different riddims, Looga
Diamond did not disappoint during
his performance.
An array of artistes who made
appearances include sungura
musician Romeo Gasa, Obvious
Mutani, dancehall chanter Mostaf
and Shiga Shiga among others.
Speaking on the sidelines of
the show, Super Label Club boss
Rogers Chinoperekwei said they
are committed to give upcoming
artistes a platform to showcase
their talent.
“Upcoming artistes who are
serious with their careers can
approach us we are prepared to
support them as we seek to unearth
and promote talent for underground
artistes who are failing
to get exposure,” Chinoperekwei
said.
The country’s dancehall genre
continues to grow as witnessed by
the number of artistes who have
ventured into the genre and several
Jamaican dancehall artistes
like Capleton, Elephant Man, Tony
Rebel, Turbulence, Mavado and
Agent Sasco, among others who
have visited the country.
Mash Central, Masvingo host
Chibuku Neshamwari
Traditional Dance search
told NewsDay that they will remain
committed to the development
of arts in Zimbabwe through
the company’s Chibuku brand.
“Through our Chibuku brand
we value the privilege of promoting
and celebrating our culture
and heritage with the aim of affording
aspiring young musicians
a chance to discover their talent,”
Murambinda said.
“The main idea of the Neshamwari
Dance Competition is
to encourage local artistes to appreciate
traditional dance and
thus promot and preserving Zimbabwean
Culture.”
Delta Beverages, through their
popular Chibuku beer brand, began
sponsoring the dance competition
at its inception in 1963
promoting the development of
music through identification of
groups with potential to produce
recordable material and assist
winning groups in documenting
their work.
The competition is run as a
tripartite partnership among title
sponsors Delta Beverages and
technical partners National Arts
Council and the Zimbabwe Traditional
Dance Association.
Over the years, Chibuku Neshamwari
finals have been characterised
by pomp and fanfare.
The event has also proved to be
one of the country’s biggest and
most successful talent identification
platforms.

ND SPORT
SPORT NewsDay saturday june 7, 2014 19
Coltrane looks Grand
Special Correspondent
A KING IS BORN and Equina renew
rivalry in the $ 40 000 OK
Grand Challenge at Borrowdale
this afternoon.
Deon Sampson is aboard the
Alyson Wright-trained A King Is
Born while Karl Zechner rides
Equina, trained by Amy Bronkhorst.
Both are 0.5kg worse off with
the third finisher that day, Coltrane,
to be ridden by Randall Simons.
The latter had only been in
the country a week when contesting
the Tankard and should improve
on that run, having now had
the month to settle into his new
surroundings. He does, however,
jump from the outermost draw.
Top three-year-old Lucky Sam,
to be ridden by JP van der Merwe,
tries his luck against older horses
and warrants respect as does
Menacing who was not beaten far,
after encountering a road block in
the closing stages of the Tankard.
He will have the services of Marco
van Rensburg.
Hollywood Babe (Van Rensburg)
looks the horse to beat on exposed
form in Race 1 – a Maiden Juvenile
Plate over 1000m. There are,
however, three unraced horses
lining up and the betting should
be watched about Ocean Boulevard
(Chris Taylor) who makes
A King Is Born, winner of last year’s Republic Cup, lines up today for the OK Grand Challenge over 1800m at
Borrowdale Park.
his debut for the Wright stable.
First Approach (Naude) fluffed his
lines when favourite last time out
and will be out to make amends
with Cyclone Seven (Zechner) the
best of the rest.
Zecner has another good ride in
Race 2 over 1200m where he is
aboard Eversolucky. She has had
three promising runs to date and
could shed her maiden tag. Although
she takes on older horses,
she was beaten less than a length
in open company last time and
looks set for a good run.
Watch Alto Rouge (Sampson)
who runs for a new stable, having
moved after a costly spree for
punters!
Triple Tiara winner Casey’s
Dance is top weight in Race 4, a
Fillies Handicap over 1600m, but
she will have to pull out all the
stops to beat Let’s Fly High and
Lance Pagel at the weights. This
filly took her on at level weights in
the first two legs of the treble, was
beaten 1.25 lengths and a short
head respectively, and now meets
her with 2.5kg in hand.
Tibouchina (Sherman Brown)
had a good comeback run on
Tankard day and should be fit for
this event. Princess Kate looks
good enough to fill the minor
place.
Sin Latigo (Fancois Naude) returns
to maiden company after a
good run in the Oaks and providing
the 1600m of this Maiden Plate
is not too short for her, she should
go well with Supa Dupa (Zechner)
who also steps down in class.
Rock The Cashbar is knocking
at the door and will give the two
fillies a run for their money with
Playing With Fire, who ran a
blinder when taking on winners
last time out in his first run around
the Borrowdale turn.
Belo Horizonte (Quinton Riddle)
has been taking on stronger by
virtue of the penalty she was given
after running second in the Oaks a
year ago.
A Novice Plate over 1800m has
finally come around and she could
be a good value bet.
Maturin (Van Rensburg) should
improve on his Zimbabwe debut,
racing this time over a more suitable
distance.
Messi seeks ultimate prize
RIO DE JANEIRO — After a spectacular
haul of trophies with Barcelona,
Lionel Messi has a chance
to lead Argentina to glory on the
World Cup football finals stage and
build on his reputation as one of
the all-time greats.
The four-times World Player of
the Year has won a glittering array
of club silverware and has established
himself as one of the finest
footballers to grace the game,
but some believe he must win the
World Cup before he can be hailed
as a true great.
Many others believe, at the
age of 26 — he turns 27 during the
tournament on June 24 — he already
has.
Messi is inevitably compared
with Diego Maradona, who inspired
the nation to victory at the
1986 World Cup in Mexico, and
will travel to Brazil with considerable
expectation on his shoulders.
A lot will depend on how well
he copes with the pressure and
whether he shrugs off an out-ofcharacter
indifferent spell towards
the end of the Spanish season.
At Barcelona, he was a carefree
youngster who came through
the youth ranks earning plenty
of praise, but it never went to his
head.
He enjoyed playing football,
that was his outlet to express himself
and his confidence on the
pitch was in marked contrast to his
generally shy personality.
Is Rooney the lead?
RIO DE JANEIRO — More than a decade
after he made his England debut as a
fearless and prodigiously-talented
teenaged tear-away, it is still hard to
find a consensus on Wayne Rooney’s
value to his country.
Is he the world-class talisman
upon whom several England managers
— as well as thousands of travelling
fans — have invested their hopes
of overdue success?
Is he merely a good player whose
intermittent brilliance exposes the
mediocrity of many of his international
teammates?
Or is he the English enigma — perhaps
even underachiever — who has
caused so much frustration at major
tournaments?
What is clear is that at the age of
28 and with 90 caps and 38 goals behind
him, Rooney owes England a big
World Cup in Brazil.
The Liverpool-born striker might
have won Premier League and Champions
League titles since joining Manchester
United from Everton in 2004,
but his England career has no obvious
mark of distinction.
He is even waiting for his first goal
at a World Cup.
In Germany in 2006, Rooney had
only just overcome a foot injury and
was evidently lacking in match fitness
when his temper boiled over and he
was sent off for stamping on Ricardo
Lionel Messi (right) evades a tackle from a Trinidad and Tobago player during a friendly match played this week
Whether there were millions
watching around the world, it
didn’t seem to matter to him as he
was self-absorbed in outwitting
the opposition with his trickery.
Now in his mid-twenties and a
father to an infant son, he carries
the responsibility of being the talisman
for Barcelona and he is at a
club where the fans worship him
for what he has already delivered.
It is different story for the Albiceleste.
During a fruitful qualifying
campaign, when he netted
Carvalho as England went out on penalties
to Portugal in the quarter-finals.
“Don’t kill him,” Sven-Goran
Eriksson told the media afterwards,
as expectation and disappointment
collided.
In South Africa in 2010, the frustration
of life with England — and another
pre-tournament injury — again got to
the forward. At the end of England’s
stultifying 0-0 group-stage draw with
Algeria, Rooney said into a TV camera
as he walked off: “Nice to see your
own fans booing you.” He later apologised
for “any offence caused”.
Rooney couldn’t take part in England's
first two matches at Euro 2012
because he was suspended after being
red carded during the final qualifier
against Montenegro. He returned
to score the winner against Ukraine
but could not lift his teammates in the
quarterfinal with Italy which ended
with another penalty shootout defeat.
“Rooney only plays well in Manchester,”
was former England coach
Fabio Capello’s damning assessment.
Even the one tournament that
Rooney has graced — the 2004 European
Championship — has become
strangely tainted over the years by
the subsequent feeling of unfulfilled
potential. So after he has covered his
10 goals, Argentines warmed to
him, but still Messi has to measure
up to Maradona.
The former Argentina captain
and coach is an idol in his native
country as many identify with
him, the boy who emerged from
the slums and restored national
pride, notably with the two goals
that knocked out England in the
quarterfinals in Mexico in 1986.
RIO DE JANEIRO — A transfer of
Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona to
English club Chelsea will be “a
pity” for his current club, his Barcelona
and Spain teammate Pedro
Rodriguez said on Thursday.
“I’ve not talked with Cesc as
yet. He’s a very good player for us.
If he leaves it would be a shame
for Barca,” Pedro said as Spain
prepared for a World Cup football
warm-up friendly in the United
States capital against El Salvador
today.
Barcelona defender Gerard
Pique had let the cat out of the
bag over a supposed £33 million
($45 million) move by Fabregas
while chatting with Spain manager
Vicente del Bosque at a Press
conference in Washington.
His remark was picked up by a
Spanish public television microphone.
No club was mentioned,
but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho
has confirmed his side's
interest.
It’s an unwelcome distraction
as Spain prepare for their World
Cup title defence, but Pedro said
he didn’t think any tension would
linger between Fabregas and
Pique.
“They are calm about it,” he
“The team is looking good and
we are getting on well together but
in a World Cup anything can happen,
it is very difficult,” Messi said
in the build-up to the finals.
“The games at the World Cup
are totally different. First of all the
atmosphere is not like anything
else. While the Champions League
is great, the World Cup is special.”
— Reuters
said.
“It was an awkward situation, I
don’t know if it will affect them.”
Although Pedro thought it
would have been better “if the
comments hadn’t been made”,
he said Pique and Fabregas had
turned their attention to Brazil.
“Now they are dealing with
what they need to deal with,” he
said.
Spain and Chelsea defender
Cesar Azpilicueta said he’d heard
nothing official about a move.
“But Cesc is a great player and
has a lot of Premier League experience,”
he said. “I think great
players are always welcome at
great clubs.”
Fabregas left Barcelona’s academy
to join English club Arsenal at
the age of 16 in 2003 and quickly
became the youngest player and
goalscorer in the North London
club’s history. He won the FA Cup
in 2005 and was named captain in
November 2008, but returned to
Barcelona three years ago.
“He is a special player with
great vision,” Azpilicueta said.
“And he can play in various positions.
At Chelsea, we don’t have a
player with these characteristics.”
THE Great Trek to South Africa
continues.
And for Zimbabwean football
players, this is the dream place to
be, not anywhere in Europe.
Since the Warriors marvellous’
run in the African Nations Championships
(Chan) in January in
South Africa, local players have
been moving to eMzansi in numbers
with Highlanders being the
most hard hit.
For a number of years, Highlanders
was an exporter of players
to Europe, notably Bruce Grobbelaar,
Ndlovu, Willard Khumalo, Tito
Paketh, Rahman Gumbo, Zenzo
Moyo, Joel Luphahla, Honour
Gombami and Vusa Nyoni.
Grobbelaar, a former Warriors
captain, played for English
giants Liverpool while Peter was
at a number of clubs in England-
Coventry City, Sheffield United,
Birmingham and Huddersfield.
The late Adam played for Grasshoppers
in Switzerland before his
return home while Khumalo and
Paketh were once in Germany.
Gumbo, a former Warriors
midfielder and coach, Luphahla
and Moyo (also in Greece) played
in Cyprus while the duo of Nyoni
and Gombami are in Belgium.
The last player from Zimbabwe
a serious problem on our hands.
We have heard about Tafadzwa
Rusike, Patson Jaure and Devon
hope something will still happen.
But our players believe their
destiny lies in South Africa.
Yes, the money is there: winners
of the league get R10 million,
there are quarterly awards,
huge television rights awards and
monthly grants which means
clubs are able to pay their players
basic wages of R60 000 per
month.
At cash-rich Mamelodi Sundowns,
winning the league last
season ensured each player took
home R380 000, while there is
also good money at Kaizer Chiefs
and Orlando Pirates.
Senior players like Surprise
Moriri and Esrom Nyandoro are
getting a couple of hundreds per
month.
Clubs like Bidvest Wits, Ama-
Zulu and SuperSport are well
sponsored and will never run
short of cash to reward their
players.
This money is not available to
any local player in the Castle Lager
Basic monthly wages range from
$250 to $600 while big clubs like
little compared to what Danny
Cape Town in South Africa.
Talented former Railstars defender
Zimiseleni Moyo looked to
Old Hararians coach Cyprian
would be going out for a win in
today’s clash.
“Obviously as a coach you
Players, together with their
further their careers and not rush
for a quick-buck down south.
This simply means the quality
of players available to any national
South African standards and this
is reflected in Zimbabwe’s performances
in the Africa Cup of Nations
Local clubs also need to develop
synergies with European
team in the PSL today because of
their coach Methembe Ndlovu’s
extensive links, developed while
he was still playing and coaching
in the US.
That is why they have been able
to tour the US and have Marvellous
Nakamba playing in the French
agents like Benjani Mwaruwari
and Nyasha Mushekwi’s manager
Ralph Nkomo are available for local
clubs to build those links as
The well-decorated coach, who
said he had kept faith in the team
“Sports Club is a good team,
they’re very well coached, they’ve
got good coaches, and it’s not going
to be easy.
“At the end of the day it will all
boil down to attitude, that is, who
wants it more.
“As far as the team news is
SPORTS REPORTER
THE government has applauded
the Zimbabwe golfing community
for maintaining strong and professional
administration and believes
it’s the reason why the country
has continued to produce world
class golfers who continue to lift
the country’s flag high at international
events.
Speaking at the inaugural Zimbabwe
Golf Association’s inaugural
Awards Banquet held at Chapman
Golf Club on Thursday, Sport,
Arts and Culture deputy minister
Tabitha Kanengoni-Malinga said:
“In Zimbabwe, golf is a sport that
has maintained strong and professional
administration as evidenced
by the fact that it has had
little government interference,
thus enabling the sport to be
self-regulating.
“My ministry is proud of various
grassroots national sport development
strategies which starts
with humble young golf talent
identification programmes.
“These programmes include
Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association,
the Mabikacheche Rural Golf
Development, The Special Olympics
golf development, The Hatcliffe
Girls Development Trust —
which specialises on the girl child
— and ultimately, the recentlylaunched
University of Zimbabwe
Golf Scholarship.”
Also speaking at the event
were the former Mayor of Harare,
Muchadeyi Masunda, who highlighted
the fact that Harare was
endowed with some of the best
golf courses on the continent.
He highlighted that within
25km radius of Harare there are
over 14 golf courses, of which four
are Championship courses capable
of hosting internationally recognised
events.
He urged sport to be run by
people of integrity for the sector
to get the necessary sponsorships.
Speaking at the same function,
the African Golf Confederation
vice-president Obed Dube
praised the local golf community
of achieving so much with very
little resources.
He, however, encouraged local
golf administrators to learn from
other successful golf nations such
as neighbours South Africa.
The awards, which were held
under the theme Celebrating Golf
Excellence, were preceded by a
fundraising golf tournament that
was played earlier in the day at the
same venue as part of an initiative
where proceeds would be channelled
towards golf development.
“We had 20 attempts, but no
SPORTS REPORTER
CASTLE Lager Premier Soccer
League champions Dynamos
have completed the signing of little-known
Democratic Republic
of Congo striker Fabrice Mbimba
on a one-year contract after a
successful two-week trial with
the Harare giants.
Club secretary general Webster
Chikengezha told NewsDay Sport
yesterday that the player, who is
joining from Zambian club Zanaco
where he played in the Caf
Champions League last season,
would be registered with the PSL
on July 1 when the transfer window
opens.
There is very little information
on Mbimba on the Internet
besides that he is Congolese and
played for Zanaco last season.
However, Chikengezha said
the ginger-haired player, who
was used as a winger at Zanaco,
impressed the Dynamos technical
team during the two weeks he
had been at the club.
“He signed a one-year contract
with an option for renewal,”
said Chikengezha yesterday.
“He has been training with us
for the past two weeks and the
coaches have been impressed.
He will be leaving the country on
Sunday to start applying for work
permits and we are hoping that
his papers will be in order before
July 1,” he added.
Mbimba was part of the Dynamos
squad that beat the Warriors
3-1 a friendly match at
the National Sports Stadium on
Wednesday last week where he
was introduced as a second half
substitute.
He also played in another
friendly match against Northern
Region Division One side DStv
Rangers on Wednesday and reportedly
produced a star performance
that convinced coach Kalisto
Pasuwa and his bench to sign
him.
Chikengezha also said Dynamos
had resigned to wait for the
July 1 date to register Rodreck
Mutuma who they signed two
months ago. They had hoped to
use the lanky striker who was
offloaded by South African premiership
side Bloemfontein
Celtic, but complications with his
clearance letters means that he
will wait a little longer.
Dynamos host Triangle at
the National Sports Stadium in a
league game tomorrow, and in a
bid to lure their supporters to the
match, Chikengezha said they
have slashed gate charges to $2
for the cheapest ticket, from the
usual $3. A ticket to Bays 15 and
18 is $5 while the VIP has been
pegged at $10.
The home side will be without
hardman Stephen Alimenda
through suspension while Anesu
Gondo’s return to the fold has
been further delayed after the
striker contracted chicken pox
this week.
Dynamos physiotherapist
Knowledge Zambo said Gondo
had been quarantined and would
rejoin his teammates on Monday,
in the event that his condition
had improved.
Zambo also gave an update on
the other injured players Tawanda
Muparati, Sydney Linyama and
Devon Chafa who he said have
all started light training, but were
not fit for tomorrow’s match.
Dynamos has been struggling
for consistency this season, but
victories in their last two matches
before the international break
should give them confidence.
The league champions edged
Chiredzi 1-0 and before that, they
beat FC Platinum by the same
scoreline.
In contrast, Triangle has
been very poor of late, picking
just three points from their last
five league matches to drop into
the relegation zone. The Biggie
Zuze-coached side were fretting
over the fitness of David Sengu,
Charles Rukwanhi and Blessing
Chimwamuchere, who have
knocks and would have to pass
late fitness tests for the match.
But there is no doubt that the
biggest match this weekend is the
clash between log leaders Highlanders,
who welcome ninthplaced
FC Platinum at Barbourfields
tomorrow.
Bosso, who are on 19 points
and a point clear of secondplaced
Hwange, welcomed back
striker Gabriel Nyoni, who had
been sidelined due to an ankle
injury.
History favours the hosts in
this match, as Bosso is yet to lose
a league match against FC Platinum
at Barbourfields since 2011.
But the Lloyd Mutasa-coached
side will go into the match knowing
that it is very much possible
to collect all the three points after
beating Highlanders on penalty
shoot-out at the same venue in
the CG Msipa Charity Cup semifinal
early this year and 3-2 in the
ZNA Charities semi-finals.
