September br<strong>in</strong>gs with<br />
it many <strong>gift</strong>s. It br<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong><br />
students the <strong>opportunity</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong> reconnect with<br />
friends, <strong>and</strong> although<br />
some are w<strong>is</strong>tful about<br />
summer end<strong>in</strong>g, the <strong>gift</strong>s<br />
<strong>of</strong> wonder <strong>and</strong> education<br />
are treasures beyond<br />
measure. Autumn <strong>is</strong><br />
accompanied also by the Days <strong>of</strong> Awe, which br<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
<strong>gift</strong>s <strong>of</strong> reflection, meditation, centeredness, majesty,<br />
music <strong>and</strong> gather<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Gift <strong>of</strong> For-<strong>give</strong>-ness: The High Holy Days <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
us the contemplative space <strong>to</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k about the hurts<br />
we bear. We each have a tremendous power: the<br />
power <strong>to</strong> for<strong>give</strong>. In many cases, there <strong>is</strong> no greater<br />
<strong>gift</strong> <strong>to</strong> receive than th<strong>is</strong>. It <strong>is</strong> also a <strong>gift</strong> <strong>to</strong> the one<br />
who for<strong>give</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> that it allows us <strong>to</strong><br />
lay down a burden we have carried,<br />
lighten<strong>in</strong>g our load <strong>and</strong> illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />
our lives. In Biblical times, people<br />
sought for<strong>give</strong>ness through animal<br />
sacrifices or <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> gra<strong>in</strong><br />
which are described <strong>in</strong> the Torah.<br />
Juda<strong>is</strong>m teaches that we can be<br />
cleansed <strong>of</strong> our m<strong>is</strong>takes through<br />
such sacrifices or the modern<br />
equivalent. Once I met with a<br />
congregant who felt guilty about<br />
stay<strong>in</strong>g silent when h<strong>is</strong> friend was bullied. Although<br />
he had apologized <strong>and</strong> received for<strong>give</strong>ness, the<br />
<strong>in</strong>cident haunted him. We talked about donat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
some <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> time or money <strong>to</strong> an organization that<br />
advocates aga<strong>in</strong>st bully<strong>in</strong>g. Through th<strong>is</strong> small<br />
sacrifice, he ga<strong>in</strong>ed the feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g a positive<br />
difference, <strong>and</strong> the courage <strong>to</strong> go forward stronger<br />
than ever.<br />
Gift <strong>of</strong> Joy: Talmud teaches, “Better <strong>is</strong> one who shows<br />
a smil<strong>in</strong>g face than one who <strong>of</strong>fers milk <strong>to</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k.” Some<br />
commenta<strong>to</strong>rs suggest that more than God’s <strong>gift</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Torah it was Moses’ sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g face that gave <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />
<strong>to</strong> the Israelites. We have the ability <strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> joy,<br />
either <strong>in</strong> gr<strong>and</strong> gestures or t<strong>in</strong>y ones – a squeeze <strong>of</strong> a<br />
h<strong>and</strong>, a smile, a compliment, a l<strong>is</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g ear. Puppies<br />
are able <strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> joy by just be<strong>in</strong>g themselves. We, on<br />
the other h<strong>and</strong>, sometimes withhold joy because <strong>of</strong><br />
very real feel<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> jealousy, <strong>in</strong>adequacy, <strong>in</strong>security<br />
or shyness. Start with someone you may not know<br />
very well; for example, tell the <strong>Temple</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>dians<br />
how much you appreciate the hard work they do <strong>and</strong><br />
how mean<strong>in</strong>gful it <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> come <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a space that <strong>is</strong><br />
kept up so nicely. They are do<strong>in</strong>g holy work, <strong>to</strong>o.<br />
Say<strong>in</strong>g, “I appreciate your help” <strong>to</strong> anyone <strong>is</strong> a spark<br />
<strong>of</strong> unexpected joy for them. Then th<strong>in</strong>k about how<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> joy <strong>to</strong> the people with whom you are close.<br />
Say <strong>to</strong> your sibl<strong>in</strong>g or your friend, “I want <strong>to</strong> set<br />
aside time <strong>to</strong> hear about your life because I th<strong>in</strong>k you<br />
are wonderful.” Or write a card…<br />
Which leads me <strong>to</strong>:<br />
Gift <strong>of</strong> Words: Talmud teaches, “Whoever <strong>give</strong>s a small<br />
co<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> a poor man has six bless<strong>in</strong>gs bes<strong>to</strong>wed upon him, but the one<br />
who speaks a k<strong>in</strong>d word <strong>to</strong> him obta<strong>in</strong>s eleven.” With email <strong>and</strong><br />
text<strong>in</strong>g so convenient, we get very few cards anymore.<br />
But a h<strong>and</strong>written card which just lets someone know<br />
you love them - what a <strong>gift</strong>! Or call a relative <strong>and</strong> say,<br />
“I know I could have texted, but I wanted <strong>to</strong> hear your<br />
beautiful voice.”<br />
“The <strong>opportunity</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> <strong>is</strong>,<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>itself</strong>, a <strong>gift</strong>. ”<br />
Gift <strong>of</strong> Time: Society teaches that time <strong>is</strong> money.<br />
Juda<strong>is</strong>m says time <strong>is</strong> priceless. Heschel says that the<br />
Sabbath <strong>is</strong> a day <strong>to</strong> “spend” with family, community,<br />
<strong>and</strong> friends. When we <strong>in</strong>vest our time <strong>in</strong> each other,<br />
or volunteer for causes, it <strong>is</strong> an<br />
<strong>in</strong>valuable <strong>gift</strong>. Th<strong>is</strong> year we are<br />
beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g a men<strong>to</strong>rship program,<br />
<strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g congregants <strong>to</strong> share the<br />
<strong>gift</strong> <strong>of</strong> their time with high school<br />
students. Please let me know if you<br />
are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Gift <strong>of</strong> Giv<strong>in</strong>g: The <strong>opportunity</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> <strong>is</strong>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>itself</strong>, a <strong>gift</strong>.<br />
Once, a woman came <strong>to</strong> my <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />
She had been through terrible pa<strong>in</strong>,<br />
fac<strong>in</strong>g vast hardships relationally, f<strong>in</strong>ancially, <strong>and</strong><br />
physically. I was stunned when after her s<strong>to</strong>ry, she<br />
said, “Rabbi, how can I help you? I know I have a lot<br />
<strong>to</strong> contribute <strong>to</strong> the world, <strong>and</strong> I want <strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> as well.”<br />
We know that giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> about generosity. It <strong>is</strong> also<br />
about human dignity <strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>opportunity</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
actively participate <strong>in</strong> concrete, direct ways.<br />
May each <strong>of</strong> our homes <strong>and</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>Temple</strong> – our<br />
collective home – all abound th<strong>is</strong> New Year with<br />
the <strong>gift</strong>s <strong>of</strong> for-<strong>give</strong>-ness, joy, time, k<strong>in</strong>d words, <strong>and</strong><br />
giv<strong>in</strong>g. Shana Tova! •<br />

From My Home<br />
<strong>to</strong> Your Home<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce arriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Los<br />
Angeles two decades<br />
ago, I have had three<br />
homes. The first was<br />
a multi-level condo;<br />
the second was one <strong>of</strong><br />
those houses with the bird houses perched above<br />
the garage that are spr<strong>in</strong>kled throughout the<br />
Valley. And the most recent residence, our home<br />
<strong>in</strong> Sherman Oaks, <strong>is</strong> truly my home. Nestled on<br />
an undeveloped canyon that <strong>is</strong> part <strong>of</strong> the Santa<br />
Monica Conservancy, my house <strong>in</strong> Sherman<br />
Oaks <strong>is</strong> home <strong>to</strong> the four <strong>of</strong> us: me, Don, <strong>and</strong><br />
the two cats. As our back yard <strong>is</strong> also part <strong>of</strong> the<br />
migra<strong>to</strong>ry space for a variety <strong>of</strong> wildlife, we also<br />
begrudg<strong>in</strong>gly share the gardens <strong>and</strong> hill beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
the house with a family <strong>of</strong> raccoons, a skunk<br />
whose girth causes her <strong>to</strong> waddle comically, the<br />
resident back yard lizards, a couple <strong>of</strong> snakes we<br />
just ignore, <strong>and</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> deer that considers<br />
our backyard vegetation their own private<br />
twilight buffet.<br />
“From the open<strong>in</strong>g stra<strong>in</strong>s<br />
<strong>of</strong> H<strong>in</strong>’ni … <strong>to</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>al l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong><br />
Neilah … I am br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g you<br />
a bit <strong>of</strong> my home”<br />
Although my <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>is</strong> also my work place<br />
“home” <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> well suited <strong>to</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, writ<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g, I <strong>of</strong>ten retreat <strong>to</strong> the piano<br />
<strong>in</strong> my liv<strong>in</strong>g room when I have new music or<br />
challeng<strong>in</strong>g music <strong>to</strong> learn. It’s here, seated <strong>in</strong><br />
front <strong>of</strong> a 1927 Ste<strong>in</strong>way that humbles me every<br />
time I play, that I practice much <strong>of</strong> what you hear<br />
at our High Holiday services. Surrounded by<br />
the comforts <strong>of</strong> home- <strong>and</strong> two cats that actually<br />
enjoy the s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> play<strong>in</strong>g- I try <strong>to</strong> translate<br />
the ancient words <strong>and</strong> hallowed melodies <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
sacred moments for our congregation.<br />
As I s<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> practice the nusach, chazzanut,<br />
<strong>and</strong> all the contemporary pieces that provide<br />
our liturgy with its musical life, I become acutely<br />
aware <strong>of</strong> all those chazzanim who preceded me<br />
<strong>in</strong> life <strong>and</strong> how they <strong>to</strong>o prepared for the Yamim<br />
Noraim <strong>in</strong> exactly the same way. Year after year,<br />
I start look<strong>in</strong>g at the prayers almost as if I were<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g at them for the first time, <strong>and</strong> each year<br />
the <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>is</strong> slightly different. S<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />
prayers <strong>is</strong> like <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g Torah: although the<br />
words may be the same, we are not the same<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce the last time we looked at the Hebrew<br />
l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the pages <strong>of</strong> our machzor. The prayers<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> the same, but we have moved on. Our<br />
lives are different, the people we count as part <strong>of</strong><br />
our lives have changed, <strong>and</strong> the world <strong>of</strong> which<br />
we are a part has been amended.<br />
Each year, from the open<strong>in</strong>g stra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> H<strong>in</strong>’ni<br />
that beg<strong>in</strong>s our calls <strong>to</strong> prayer on Rosh Hashanah<br />
<strong>to</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>al l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> Neilah that concludes our<br />
service on Yom Kippur, I am br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g you a bit<br />
<strong>of</strong> my home: the antique piano, the raccoons <strong>in</strong><br />
the back yard, the deaf cat who sits on my lap as<br />
I play, my lov<strong>in</strong>g husb<strong>and</strong> who encourages every<br />
s<strong>in</strong>gle eighth note. These words <strong>and</strong> music are<br />
transferred from my home <strong>to</strong> the sanctuary <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong>- your spiritual home- <strong>and</strong> I hope<br />
<strong>and</strong> pray the messages these songs deliver, the<br />
s<strong>to</strong>ries they tell, become part <strong>of</strong> your true home,<br />
wherever that may be.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year as the prayers <strong>and</strong> songs recall the<br />
ancient s<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>of</strong> our people <strong>and</strong> retell the<br />
journeys <strong>of</strong> those who came before us, I <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
them <strong>to</strong> you as a housewarm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>gift</strong>. May these<br />
<strong>gift</strong>s enliven your spirit, soothe your woes, ease<br />
your burdens <strong>and</strong> help <strong>to</strong> usher <strong>in</strong> a joyous <strong>and</strong><br />
healthy New Year. •<br />

The Selichot service <strong>is</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />
beautiful <strong>of</strong> the entire year. Tak<strong>in</strong>g place<br />
<strong>in</strong> the late even<strong>in</strong>g, the synagogue <strong>is</strong> bathed<br />
<strong>in</strong> shadow, the High Holiday melodies are<br />
heard for the first time s<strong>in</strong>ce the previous<br />
year, <strong>and</strong> the messages <strong>of</strong> for<strong>give</strong>ness <strong>and</strong><br />
repentance are prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> the liturgy.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year our Selichot service Saturday,<br />
September 12 at 7:30 p.m. <strong>is</strong> preceded by an<br />
extraord<strong>in</strong>ary dramatic presentation written<br />
by Debbie Pearl. Debbie <strong>is</strong> not only my covocal<strong>is</strong>t<br />
at our jazz services, but she’s a f<strong>in</strong>e<br />
playwright, as well. In her one-act work,<br />
“Incomplete Strangers” two senior citizens<br />
confront their past as they spend their days<br />
<strong>in</strong> a convalescent home. By the conclusion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the play, their memories <strong>and</strong> actions have<br />
us ask<strong>in</strong>g ourselves if for<strong>give</strong>ness <strong>is</strong> possible,<br />
even <strong>in</strong> the most dire situations.<br />
We welcome an all-star cast <strong>to</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> for th<strong>is</strong><br />
semi-staged read<strong>in</strong>g: Ed Asner <strong>and</strong> Shelley<br />
Berman <strong>in</strong>terpret the roles <strong>of</strong> the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />
home residents with John Rubenste<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
Susan Hull round<strong>in</strong>g out the cast.<br />
Ed Asner <strong>is</strong> well known as telev<strong>is</strong>ion’s Lou<br />
Grant <strong>in</strong> the award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g “Mary Tyler<br />

Mr. Berman <strong>is</strong> also an <strong>in</strong>struc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong> the<br />

on Broadway <strong>and</strong> starred <strong>in</strong> such other<br />
monumental works as “Children <strong>of</strong> a Lesser<br />

“Wicked.”<br />
Susan Hull <strong>is</strong> a veteran telev<strong>is</strong>ion actress,<br />

Jo<strong>in</strong> us for Selichot as we beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> welcome<br />
the New Year with melodies filled with the<br />
spirit <strong>of</strong> Rosh Hashanah, prayers reflect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the mood <strong>of</strong> these Days <strong>of</strong> Awe, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

assumptions <strong>of</strong> good, evil <strong>and</strong> for<strong>give</strong>ness. •<br />

F R O M R A b b I F R I m m e r<br />
Of all the rooms<br />
<strong>in</strong> my home, I<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k the kitchen<br />
<strong>is</strong> my favorite.<br />
It holds all <strong>of</strong><br />
the spices, the<br />
sweet <strong>and</strong> savory<br />
treats, the strong<br />
morn<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>of</strong>fee<br />
<strong>and</strong> the calm<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>g teas. Glass jelly<br />
jars filled with colorful beans, barley, qu<strong>in</strong>oa<br />
<strong>and</strong> lentils l<strong>in</strong>e the back <strong>of</strong> my counter. In<br />
the kitchen, surrounded by fresh vegetables,<br />
whole gra<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> raw foods, I feel myself<br />
slow down. I consider my options. I try out<br />
different comb<strong>in</strong>ations. I take r<strong>is</strong>ks with<br />
flavors <strong>and</strong> textures, <strong>and</strong> I wait <strong>in</strong> anticipation<br />
for the first uncharted taste.<br />
My home <strong>is</strong> a Jew<strong>is</strong>h home not only because<br />
<strong>of</strong> the mezuzah on my front door, but also<br />
because <strong>of</strong> my practices <strong>in</strong> the kitchen. (And<br />
I’m not just talk<strong>in</strong>g about keep<strong>in</strong>g kosher.)<br />
To live with a heightened awareness <strong>of</strong> what<br />
I consume, where it orig<strong>in</strong>ated, who pulled<br />
it out <strong>of</strong> the ground, <strong>and</strong> how I can express<br />
thanks for receiv<strong>in</strong>g the bounty – th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a<br />
Jew<strong>is</strong>h value brought <strong>to</strong> life <strong>in</strong> a Jew<strong>is</strong>h home.<br />
To take the time <strong>to</strong> prepare nour<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g food<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vite friends <strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> me around<br />
the table for an even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> conversation <strong>and</strong><br />
connection – th<strong>is</strong>, <strong>to</strong>o, <strong>is</strong> a Jew<strong>is</strong>h value.<br />
The relationship <strong>of</strong> Jews <strong>and</strong> food has never<br />
been limited <strong>to</strong> shellf<strong>is</strong>h <strong>and</strong> pork or fast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
feast<strong>in</strong>g. Jew<strong>is</strong>h values are expressed through<br />
food when we consider what we buy, where<br />
we purchase, <strong>and</strong> how we eat each <strong>and</strong> every<br />
day. “Obesity, vegetarian<strong>is</strong>m, food packag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
genetically-modified foods, carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>ts,<br />
battery-caged hens, fast-food…” Juda<strong>is</strong>m has<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> say about it all. “Our eat<strong>in</strong>g has<br />
become symbolic <strong>of</strong> our lives: hurried, reactive,<br />
d<strong>is</strong>connected from l<strong>and</strong>, family, tradition <strong>and</strong><br />
place.” (Food for Thought, p.x) It’s time <strong>to</strong> slow<br />
down <strong>and</strong> reconnect <strong>to</strong> some <strong>of</strong> our core Jew<strong>is</strong>h<br />
values: express<strong>in</strong>g gratitude, pursu<strong>in</strong>g justice,<br />
welcom<strong>in</strong>g guests (hachnasat orchim), <strong>and</strong><br />
celebrat<strong>in</strong>g life.<br />
As we beg<strong>in</strong> the New Year <strong>of</strong> 5770, I <strong>in</strong>vite<br />
you <strong>to</strong> return <strong>to</strong> your kitchens with a new year’s<br />
resolution: If you are WHAT you eat (<strong>and</strong>, more<br />
importantly, if you are HOW you eat!), then<br />
become the person you w<strong>is</strong>h <strong>to</strong> be <strong>and</strong> make one<br />
healthy, susta<strong>in</strong>able change <strong>to</strong> your food system.<br />
Perhaps you’ll jo<strong>in</strong> our Community Supported<br />
Agriculture (CSA) program <strong>and</strong> receive a box <strong>of</strong><br />
fresh, seasonal, organic vegetables once a week<br />
from a local farm. Perhaps you’ll <strong>in</strong>troduce the<br />
practice <strong>of</strong> a bless<strong>in</strong>g before d<strong>in</strong>ner each night,<br />
slow<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer a few words <strong>of</strong> thanks<br />
before tak<strong>in</strong>g the first bite.<br />
You don’t have <strong>to</strong> do it alone! Talk <strong>to</strong> your<br />
fellow Isaians <strong>and</strong> ask them for their best<br />
“Kitchen Table W<strong>is</strong>dom.” What do you<br />
eat? How do you shop? Can you pronounce<br />
qu<strong>in</strong>oa or acai? Talk <strong>to</strong> Rabbi Dara Frimmer<br />
about jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our CSA. For more ideas about<br />
bless<strong>in</strong>gs, veggies, eco-kashrut, or the h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry<br />
<strong>of</strong> kugel, drop by the <strong>of</strong>fice for a shmooze <strong>and</strong><br />
a snack. (Warn<strong>in</strong>g: it may be kale.) May th<strong>is</strong><br />
be a year <strong>of</strong> healthy, susta<strong>in</strong>able change for our<br />
families <strong>and</strong> for our world!<br />
For more food celebration <strong>and</strong> exploration,<br />

“Inscribe them on the<br />
doorposts <strong>of</strong> your house<br />
<strong>and</strong> on your gates.”<br />
(Deuteronomy 6:9) The<br />
familiarity <strong>of</strong> these<br />
words pervades our<br />
very ex<strong>is</strong>tence as Jews. Central <strong>to</strong> the words<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Shema, we are <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>scribe its words<br />
on the entrance way <strong>to</strong> our home by hang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a mezuzah on the doorpost. It <strong>is</strong> more than<br />
just words that we affix <strong>to</strong> our doorpost; we<br />
affix a way <strong>of</strong> life, a commitment <strong>to</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />
ideals <strong>and</strong> a set <strong>of</strong> actions that are holy. The<br />
Jew<strong>is</strong>h home <strong>is</strong> a place <strong>to</strong> feel safe <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
create sacred space bound up <strong>in</strong> the w<strong>is</strong>dom<br />
<strong>of</strong> what Juda<strong>is</strong>m <strong>of</strong>fers us. To strengthen each<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual Jew<strong>is</strong>h home <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> strengthen the<br />
entire Jew<strong>is</strong>h community.<br />
The rabb<strong>is</strong> teach us that the Jew<strong>is</strong>h home <strong>is</strong><br />
the first Jew<strong>is</strong>h classroom, <strong>and</strong> it <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>cumbent<br />
upon parents <strong>to</strong> take on the role <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
first Jew<strong>is</strong>h teachers that a child has when s/he<br />
enters the world <strong>and</strong> embarks on her/h<strong>is</strong> Jew<strong>is</strong>h<br />
journey. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> such a great responsibility<br />
impressed upon parents, one that <strong>of</strong>ten seems<br />
daunt<strong>in</strong>g for the most well-equipped <strong>and</strong> wellversed<br />
Jew<strong>is</strong>h adult. So how do we do it? How<br />
do we create a Jew<strong>is</strong>h home that <strong>is</strong> filled with<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> powerful Jew<strong>is</strong>h experiences?<br />
When I meet with wedd<strong>in</strong>g couples, I sometimes<br />
ask them <strong>to</strong> take a look at their home <strong>and</strong> draw<br />
a picture <strong>of</strong> all the places that are imbued with<br />
Juda<strong>is</strong>m. They <strong>of</strong>ten po<strong>in</strong>t out a bookshelf that<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>s the Tanach <strong>and</strong> other Jew<strong>is</strong>h books.<br />
They po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>to</strong> the mezuzah on the door or the<br />
Shabbat set <strong>in</strong> the d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g room. Some po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>to</strong><br />
the kitchen where they prepare their Shabbat meal<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> their <strong>in</strong>dividual practice <strong>of</strong> Kashrut.<br />
In some houses, we f<strong>in</strong>d Jew<strong>is</strong>h art on the walls<br />
<strong>and</strong> a place set aside for their ketubah. Studies<br />
show that when we are <strong>in</strong> a place for more than<br />
six months, we become accus<strong>to</strong>med <strong>to</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that <strong>is</strong> there. Th<strong>in</strong>gs that are out <strong>of</strong> place seem<br />
normal <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> situation. The challenge for us as<br />
we enter our Jew<strong>is</strong>h home <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> look at it with<br />
fresh eyes. What’s m<strong>is</strong>s<strong>in</strong>g or out <strong>of</strong> place? What<br />
do we need <strong>to</strong> make our home “Jew<strong>is</strong>h?”<br />
The answer <strong>to</strong> that question may be found<br />
by the add<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> objects, but it <strong>is</strong> also<br />
found <strong>in</strong> a set <strong>of</strong> values <strong>and</strong> actions that<br />
go along with those values. <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fers many outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs that<br />
enrich these values <strong>and</strong> encourage holy<br />
actions that make the home more Jew<strong>is</strong>h.<br />
We are <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g two excit<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>to</strong><br />
families with school-age children. Shabbat<br />
B’yachad <strong>and</strong> TIYUL: Connections help<br />
<strong>to</strong> strengthen the family <strong>and</strong> the home.<br />
Through learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> action, we d<strong>is</strong>cover<br />
the w<strong>is</strong>dom <strong>of</strong> Jew<strong>is</strong>h texts <strong>and</strong> h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry<br />
<strong>and</strong> apply it <strong>to</strong> our lives. These programs<br />
emphasize whole family participation <strong>in</strong><br />
which our priority goal <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> live our lives<br />
guided by Torah. Together as a synagogue,<br />
as a community <strong>and</strong> as <strong>in</strong>dividual families,<br />
we can take these lessons <strong>and</strong> shape our lives<br />
<strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> make a difference <strong>in</strong><br />

As the <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g Vice President <strong>of</strong> Membership at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong>, I am very curious about all our<br />
<strong>Temple</strong> members. It <strong>is</strong> my goal <strong>to</strong> ensure that all our members know that they are valued, <strong>and</strong> that their<br />
membership needs are be<strong>in</strong>g filled.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year, we want <strong>to</strong> learn more about you! We’d like <strong>to</strong> strengthen your <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Temple</strong> as<br />
members <strong>and</strong> as volunteers. While we know how many preschool <strong>and</strong> religious school families we have,<br />
we haven’t quantified many other important affiliations: i.e., how many <strong>of</strong> you are empty nesters, retirees,<br />
<strong>in</strong>terfaith, s<strong>in</strong>gle, divorced, widowed, or without children?<br />
We will be send<strong>in</strong>g you a short survey <strong>to</strong> ask for th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation. When you receive the survey, please<br />
answer it! The more responses we get, the better we can be at mak<strong>in</strong>g membership as mean<strong>in</strong>gful as<br />
possible.<br />
I want <strong>to</strong> thank Lynn Rogo, the past Vice President <strong>of</strong> Membership, for all she accompl<strong>is</strong>hed. She<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduced the successful Ambassador program <strong>and</strong> helped <strong>to</strong> rebuild a thriv<strong>in</strong>g women’s group, <strong>Isaiah</strong><br />
Women, which attracted nearly 200 women <strong>in</strong> its first year. Yasher koach, Lynn!<br />
The aforementioned survey will not be ready for a few months, so <strong>in</strong> the meantime, I welcome your<br />
comments about membership <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vite you <strong>to</strong> get more <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong>/or volunteer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
opportunities.<br />
Feel free <strong>to</strong> email me at jillesmith1@gmail.com <strong>and</strong> put the word “membership” <strong>in</strong> the subject l<strong>in</strong>e.•<br />

An Even More Eternal Light - Next time you are <strong>in</strong> the sanctuary, gaze up<br />
at our solar-powered Ner Tamid. Hardly an eye-catcher before, but now,<br />
from most vantage po<strong>in</strong>ts, it sparkles brilliantly, us<strong>in</strong>g only power it gets from<br />
the sun, sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a light not just <strong>in</strong> space, but also through time. It sh<strong>in</strong>es above<br />
the ark, light<strong>in</strong>g the way <strong>to</strong> the Torah, <strong>and</strong> symbolizes God’s eternal presence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />
therefore never <strong>to</strong> be ext<strong>in</strong>gu<strong>is</strong>hed. Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the past, we see oil lamps (menorahs)<br />
burn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Temple</strong> from even<strong>in</strong>g until morn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the cont<strong>in</strong>uously burn<strong>in</strong>g fire<br />
on the altar for burnt <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs. Illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the future, it <strong>in</strong>forms our path with the message,<br />
“Live susta<strong>in</strong>ably.” Use only what can easily be replaced, <strong>and</strong> do no harm other than that which<br />
quickly heals.<br />
The <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>is</strong> grateful <strong>to</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Rabb<strong>is</strong> who organized th<strong>is</strong> project <strong>and</strong> the AQMD<br />
(Air Quality Management D<strong>is</strong>trict) who helped sponsor it, giv<strong>in</strong>g twelve congregations the<br />
wonderment <strong>of</strong> what a 1 Watt bulb can do, <strong>and</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g a constant rem<strong>in</strong>der that there are<br />
solutions! Besides we do not have <strong>to</strong> depend on the limited resources that we need <strong>to</strong> share<br />
with our children <strong>and</strong> future generations. •<br />

The proportion <strong>of</strong><br />
U.S. adults who<br />
are obese <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
<strong>to</strong> 26.1 percent <strong>in</strong><br />
2008 compared<br />
<strong>to</strong> 25.6 percent <strong>in</strong><br />
2007. The data<br />
comes straight<br />
for the Center for<br />
Tamar Andrews<br />
D<strong>is</strong>ease Control<br />
Early Childhood<br />
Program Direc<strong>to</strong>r (CDC) <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />
alarm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> those<br />
<strong>of</strong> us that work <strong>in</strong><br />
early childhood education.<br />
“Obesity <strong>is</strong> a major r<strong>is</strong>k fac<strong>to</strong>r for many<br />
chronic d<strong>is</strong>eases such as heart d<strong>is</strong>ease <strong>and</strong><br />
diabetes. As obesity <strong>in</strong>creases among all<br />
age groups, we are see<strong>in</strong>g chronic d<strong>is</strong>eases<br />
<strong>in</strong> much younger adults compared <strong>to</strong> a<br />
few decades ago,” said Dr. William Dietz,<br />
direc<strong>to</strong>r, CDC’s Div<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Nutrition,<br />
Physical Activity <strong>and</strong> Obesity.<br />
“For example, we now see young adults<br />
who suffer from heart d<strong>is</strong>ease r<strong>is</strong>k fac<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
<strong>and</strong> other conditions such as Type 2<br />
diabetes that were unheard <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> the past.”<br />
And the percentage <strong>of</strong> overweight<br />
children <strong>in</strong> the United States <strong>is</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at an alarm<strong>in</strong>g rate, with one out <strong>of</strong> three<br />
children now considered overweight or<br />
obese. Many children are spend<strong>in</strong>g less<br />
time exerc<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> more time <strong>in</strong> front<br />
<strong>of</strong> the TV, computer, or video-game<br />
console. And <strong>to</strong>day’s busy families have<br />
fewer free moments <strong>to</strong> prepare nutritious,<br />
home-cooked meals. From fast food <strong>to</strong><br />
electronics, quick <strong>and</strong> easy <strong>is</strong> the reality for<br />
many people <strong>in</strong> the new millennium.<br />
Prevent<strong>in</strong>g children from becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
overweight means adapt<strong>in</strong>g the way we feed<br />
<strong>and</strong> educate children <strong>and</strong> families. Help<strong>in</strong>g<br />
children lead healthy lifestyles beg<strong>in</strong>s with<br />
parents <strong>and</strong> teachers who lead by example.<br />
And so, for th<strong>is</strong> Rosh Hashanah, the<br />
Preschool <strong>is</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g on a New Year’s<br />
Resolution: We are go<strong>in</strong>g sugar-free.<br />
I watch the lunches children br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> then<br />
the c<strong>and</strong>ies their parents br<strong>in</strong>g after school,<br />
<strong>and</strong> then I see them at the mall <strong>and</strong> shops<br />
<strong>and</strong> how much sugar we are all consum<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>and</strong> I believe that it <strong>is</strong> time for someone <strong>to</strong><br />
step up <strong>and</strong> say, “ENOUGH!” As <strong>of</strong> the<br />
first day <strong>of</strong> school, <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Preschool<br />
<strong>is</strong> pledg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> serve only nutritious<br />
foods. V<strong>is</strong>ibly gone will be the ref<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>and</strong> processed sugar <strong>to</strong> which we have all<br />
become addicted. Teacher resources have<br />
been purchased, meals have been planned,<br />
<strong>and</strong> parent <strong>in</strong>formation sheets are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
created <strong>to</strong> provide healthy alternatives <strong>to</strong><br />
foods such as cupcakes with a mile-high<br />
frost<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>ps, sugar cookies full <strong>of</strong> M&M’s,<br />
<strong>and</strong> fruit juices <strong>and</strong> sodas. Instead, we will<br />
be recommend<strong>in</strong>g whole fruit, muff<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
b<strong>is</strong>cuits, water, <strong>and</strong> healthier choices for<br />
healthier lifestyles.<br />
“For th<strong>is</strong> Rosh Hashanah,<br />
the Preschool <strong>is</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g on a<br />
New Year’s Resolution:<br />
We are go<strong>in</strong>g sugar-free.”<br />
However, sugar <strong>is</strong> not the only villa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
th<strong>is</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry. Hydrogenated oils, processed<br />
foods, <strong>and</strong> canned foods will also not be<br />
welcome <strong>in</strong> our preschool. Instead, we will<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer healthy food choices with all snack<br />
times becom<strong>in</strong>g a shared experience where<br />
children ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong> preparations <strong>and</strong> clean up.<br />
Th<strong>in</strong>k back <strong>to</strong> the meals that you have<br />
enjoyed with family <strong>and</strong> friends. Recall the<br />
great conversations, the laughter, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>timacy. Food times should be times <strong>of</strong><br />
joy, laughter <strong>and</strong> fulfillment <strong>of</strong> both body<br />
<strong>and</strong> soul. But certa<strong>in</strong> foods are po<strong>is</strong>on<strong>in</strong>g<br />
these experiences, <strong>and</strong> it <strong>is</strong> time we s<strong>to</strong>p<br />
surrender<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the mass media <strong>and</strong> sugar.<br />
Rabbi Dara <strong>and</strong> a core group <strong>of</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong><br />
members are start<strong>in</strong>g up a Community<br />
Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at<br />
<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> <strong>in</strong> which I hope many <strong>of</strong> you<br />
will participate. Show children the beauty<br />
<strong>of</strong> seed-<strong>to</strong>-table farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
local agriculture. Pick up your CSA box<br />
with your child <strong>and</strong> have your child ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong><br />
prepar<strong>in</strong>g these fresh foods for the family.<br />
My goals are simple: <strong>to</strong> ra<strong>is</strong>e a new<br />
generation more <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> fruit than<br />
they are <strong>in</strong> Fri<strong>to</strong>s, <strong>to</strong> have children prefer<br />
vegetables more than Value-meals, <strong>and</strong><br />
prefer forks <strong>to</strong> plastic wrappers. We will<br />
help children learn <strong>to</strong> eat well <strong>and</strong> play<br />
hard. But we need YOUR help. Make sure<br />
you are a good role model by provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
eat<strong>in</strong>g a sound breakfast every morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Carefully select foods you purchase <strong>and</strong><br />
prepare. And sit with your children for<br />
mealtimes so that it becomes a relationshipbuild<strong>in</strong>g<br />
experience.<br />
What <strong>is</strong> your resolution for<br />
Rosh Hashanah? •<br />

Dear School<br />
Families,<br />
After 29 years<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Religious School<br />
staff here at<br />
<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong>, I<br />
Ellen Goldberg will be retir<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Religious School Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />
at the end <strong>of</strong><br />
the 2009-2010 school year. As th<strong>is</strong> will be<br />
my last year as Religious School Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal,<br />
I want it <strong>to</strong> be the best. I am so excited<br />
for the <strong>opportunity</strong> <strong>to</strong> share it with you. I<br />
wanted <strong>to</strong> <strong>give</strong> th<strong>is</strong> wonderful community<br />
advanced notice <strong>of</strong> my retirement <strong>in</strong> order<br />
that we have ample time <strong>to</strong> go through the<br />
process <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g someone great. Upon<br />
my retirement, I will become Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />
Emeritus <strong>and</strong> enjoy cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the community I love.<br />
We are so excited <strong>to</strong> welcome a new year<br />
at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Religious school. Th<strong>is</strong><br />
summer, we launched our br<strong>and</strong> new<br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e reg<strong>is</strong>tration as part <strong>of</strong> our cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />
exploration <strong>of</strong> new ways <strong>to</strong> grow. Not just<br />
adm<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tratively, but educationally as well,<br />
we cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d new ways <strong>to</strong> engage<br />
<strong>and</strong> enrich our students. Th<strong>is</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
year will see the second year <strong>of</strong> our new<br />
Religious School alternative for families:<br />
Shabbat B’Yachad for which we received<br />
a Legacy Heritage Grant <strong>and</strong> the launch<br />
<strong>of</strong> our family-styled model called Tiyul:<br />
Connections designed by our Re-Imag<strong>in</strong>e<br />
team.<br />
Together, we have grown our school from<br />
185 <strong>to</strong> 530 students, <strong>and</strong> I’ve seen many<br />
<strong>of</strong> our students grow <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> adulthood <strong>and</strong><br />
then return as <strong>Temple</strong> members, or as<br />
teachers here, which really makes me kvell!<br />
I look forward <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> grow <strong>and</strong><br />
learn <strong>to</strong>gether <strong>and</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g a great year<br />
<strong>to</strong>gether beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the fall. I also look<br />
forward <strong>to</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a part <strong>of</strong> the transition<br />
when a new person takes on the leadership<br />
<strong>of</strong> our educational programm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong><br />

S C H O O L N E W S<br />
Shalom! I hope you all had a wonderful<br />
summer! Our open<strong>in</strong>g days for Religious<br />
School will be Sunday, September 13,<br />
Tuesday, September 15 (for afternoon<br />
classes only) <strong>and</strong> Thursday, September 17.<br />
Even<strong>in</strong>g teen classes will beg<strong>in</strong> on Tuesday,<br />
Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 13. Let’s work <strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> make<br />
th<strong>is</strong> a successful <strong>and</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>gful year for<br />
both you <strong>and</strong> your children! After all, your<br />
children are only here for a few hours per<br />
week, so you have much more <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />
on their Jew<strong>is</strong>h identities than any <strong>of</strong> us<br />
do. Please be supportive <strong>of</strong> our programs<br />
by encourag<strong>in</strong>g good attendance, attend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
our family programs <strong>and</strong> family Shabbat<br />
worship, <strong>and</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g about your children’s<br />
accompl<strong>is</strong>hments each week.<br />
I have been encourag<strong>in</strong>g all teachers <strong>to</strong> send<br />
weekly emails <strong>to</strong> the parents, <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g you<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>to</strong>pics <strong>and</strong> activities covered <strong>in</strong> that<br />
week’s class session. Please try <strong>to</strong> connect<br />
with your son or daughter on the activities<br />
each week If your child <strong>is</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g Hebrew,<br />
please make sure he/she practices dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
week so the teacher does not have <strong>to</strong> re-teach<br />
the same letters, vowels, or prayers when the<br />

THANK YOU, tempLE ISAIAH WALK FOR<br />
DARFur teAM!<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year’s <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Team had 65 walkers <strong>and</strong> was the fourth largest<br />
team at the 3rd Annual Jew<strong>is</strong>h World Watch Walk for Darfur—Walk <strong>to</strong> End<br />
Genocide. And if you add all <strong>of</strong> our “virtual walkers” who supported us with<br />
sponsorships, then we had more than 200 Isaians, family members, <strong>and</strong> friends who participated<br />
<strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> year’s <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Walk Team <strong>and</strong> we ra<strong>is</strong>ed more than $6,500!<br />
The event <strong>itself</strong> had more than 60 teams <strong>and</strong> 2,000<br />

s<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>in</strong> the Los Angeles Times <strong>and</strong> the Daily News<br />
as well as TV coverage by KABC <strong>and</strong> Fox News.<br />
We owe our <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Team success <strong>to</strong> the many<br />

groups—our Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, Chai Club, Green<br />

We can feel proud that we really walked the walk for<br />

Thank you for your amaz<strong>in</strong>g support <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> year’s<br />

An AfterNOON IN the City – CommuNIty OrGANIZING<br />
On Sunday, July 12, 2009, 800 people from across Los Angeles poured <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Wilshire Boulevard <strong>Temple</strong><br />
for a One LA-IAF community action <strong>to</strong> express our collective concern about <strong>is</strong>sues fac<strong>in</strong>g Los Angeles.<br />
Forty-eight Isaians were among them! We were people from the many different faith <strong>and</strong> ethnic<br />
communities <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles: our different faces, languages, <strong>and</strong> amulets around our necks reflected the<br />
beautiful diversity <strong>of</strong> our city. The community action focused on quality public education, job-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>and</strong> roll<strong>in</strong>g back foreclosures. Cons<strong>is</strong>tent with the style <strong>of</strong> community actions, each <strong>is</strong>sue was expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
by a presenter <strong>and</strong> was illustrated with s<strong>to</strong>ries by people impacted by the <strong>is</strong>sue, <strong>and</strong> a solution <strong>to</strong> a piece<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>is</strong>sue was proposed. The public <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>in</strong> attendance – Controller Wendy Greuel, LAUSD<br />
Super<strong>in</strong>tendent Ramon Cort<strong>in</strong>es, L.A. City Council-members Jose Huizar, Bernard Parks, <strong>and</strong> Jan Perry<br />
– each responded, each embrac<strong>in</strong>g the solution proposed by One LA. When asked if we are prepared<br />
<strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue our work, the crowd responded with a resound<strong>in</strong>g “yes.” Our own Rabb<strong>in</strong>ic Intern Rachel<br />
Joseph Marah <strong>to</strong>ok a leadership role <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g the event <strong>and</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> the program presenters.<br />
Our work at <strong>Isaiah</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> focus on our concerns with public education <strong>and</strong> strengthen<strong>in</strong>g westside<br />
schools. We are excited <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve more Isaians th<strong>is</strong> fall as we build relationships with pr<strong>in</strong>cipals, parents<br />
<strong>and</strong> teachers through our neighborhoods.<br />

SOVA <strong>is</strong> a Hebrew word that means<br />
“eat <strong>and</strong> be sat<strong>is</strong>fied.” We are currently<br />

<strong>of</strong> food <strong>in</strong>security <strong>in</strong> which people<br />
are unable <strong>to</strong> purchase food <strong>to</strong> feed<br />

food pantries provide free groceries<br />

“House”<br />
Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with the High Holy Days, Bayit,<br />
or house <strong>is</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the central themes that we<br />
will be celebrat<strong>in</strong>g throughout the year<br />
at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong>.<br />
The house, or home, <strong>is</strong> where people feel the<br />
safest <strong>and</strong> most comfortable, surrounded by<br />
those they love. We at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> are so<br />
very fortunate <strong>to</strong> have another home beyond<br />
the place where we rest our heads at night<br />
…we have our congregation.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year we <strong>in</strong>vite you <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g both<br />
homes <strong>to</strong>gether for an unforgettable<br />
worship service.<br />
For the first time <strong>in</strong> our congregation’s<br />
h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry, we are present<strong>in</strong>g a complete service<br />
that <strong>in</strong>vites parents <strong>and</strong> their children <strong>to</strong> pray,<br />
learn <strong>and</strong> celebrate the High Holidays <strong>to</strong>gether<br />
<strong>in</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>gful, <strong>in</strong>teractive worship.<br />
L<strong>is</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> our <strong>Temple</strong> family,<br />
we’ve heard you say that you dream<br />
<strong>of</strong> a way families can experience<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>gful worship <strong>to</strong>gether.<br />
Through our High Holy Day<br />
family service we want <strong>to</strong> make th<strong>is</strong><br />
dream come true. It <strong>is</strong> our dream<br />
<strong>to</strong> see children <strong>and</strong> parents side by<br />
side <strong>in</strong> a lov<strong>in</strong>g, sacred environment,<br />
<strong>to</strong> hear the voices <strong>of</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents<br />
<strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>children lifted <strong>to</strong>gether,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> feel the spirit <strong>of</strong> whole<br />
families open <strong>in</strong> joy <strong>to</strong> our faith <strong>and</strong><br />
tradition.<br />
rusu rusk<br />
On Rosh Hashanah <strong>and</strong> Yom<br />
Kippur, we come <strong>to</strong>gether as a<br />
community <strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> with our families<br />
<strong>to</strong> hear the sounds <strong>of</strong> the sh<strong>of</strong>ar, the<br />
words <strong>of</strong> Torah, <strong>and</strong> the songs we<br />
love that help <strong>to</strong> express our hopes<br />
<strong>and</strong> dreams for the New Year.<br />
We <strong>in</strong>vite you <strong>and</strong> your family<br />
<strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> Rabbi Zoë, Rabbi Rick,<br />

Shana Tova!<br />
As we approach the Jew<strong>is</strong>h<br />
New Year, we th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />
the dreams we’ve dreamt:<br />
the dreams that have been<br />
realized <strong>and</strong> the ones that<br />
we still nour<strong>is</strong>h with hope.<br />
We are reflective on the<br />
past <strong>and</strong> thoughtful about<br />
the future. Th<strong>is</strong> year,<br />
consider not only devot<strong>in</strong>g<br />
th<strong>is</strong> sacred season <strong>to</strong> the<br />
past <strong>and</strong> future but <strong>to</strong><br />
be<strong>in</strong>g present. How can we<br />
be more m<strong>in</strong>dful <strong>of</strong> those<br />
with whom we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves now? How can we f<strong>in</strong>d contentment<br />
here? How do we arrest our yearn<strong>in</strong>g for someth<strong>in</strong>g else <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead<br />
savor the <strong>gift</strong> <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> very moment?<br />
In Hebrew there <strong>is</strong> a word makom which means “place.” Th<strong>is</strong> year<br />
we pray that you f<strong>in</strong>d beauty, bless<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the wonder <strong>of</strong> possibility<br />
<strong>in</strong> whatever makom you f<strong>in</strong>d yourself. May it be a year <strong>of</strong> rooted-ness<br />
<strong>and</strong> security, a year where you realize that where you need <strong>to</strong> be <strong>is</strong><br />
right where you are.<br />

Selichot<br />
<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong><br />
The Selichot Service <strong>is</strong> an <strong>opportunity</strong> <strong>to</strong> beg<strong>in</strong> the reflective <strong>and</strong><br />
soul-search<strong>in</strong>g process that commences the Days <strong>of</strong> Awe - our<br />
High Holy Day Season. Th<strong>is</strong> year, our Selichot Service features a<br />
new dramatic work by playwright Debbie Pearl. “Imperfect<br />
Strangers” <strong>is</strong> a one-act play <strong>in</strong> which two strangers try <strong>to</strong> reconcile<br />
their past <strong>and</strong> the wrongdo<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> which they were a part.<br />
The play <strong>is</strong> provocative <strong>and</strong> at times humorous, but mostly it asks<br />
us <strong>to</strong> look deeper <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> our own souls <strong>and</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e what s<strong>in</strong>s may<br />
ultimately be for<strong>give</strong>n.<br />

DIGS teLL ALL<br />
Who can imag<strong>in</strong>e the forbidd<strong>in</strong>g<br />
prophet Jeremiah arous<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
passionate love <strong>of</strong> a woman? Our<br />
own Rabbi Zoë Kle<strong>in</strong>!<br />
In her stunn<strong>in</strong>g first novel, Draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Dust, Kle<strong>in</strong> weaves Tanach, archeology,<br />
<strong>and</strong> ancient <strong>and</strong> modern Israel with<br />
stirr<strong>in</strong>g human desire. She delivers a<br />
romantic read rich <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g Biblical<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation, strong characters with ego<br />
<strong>and</strong> empathy, <strong>and</strong> lyrical prose. Th<strong>is</strong> well plotted novel starts slowly; stay<br />
with it; soon it proceeds at a smart pace, surpr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g tw<strong>is</strong>ts propell<strong>in</strong>g you<br />
through time, place <strong>and</strong> adventures <strong>to</strong> a sat<strong>is</strong>fy<strong>in</strong>g end.<br />
Archaeolog<strong>is</strong>t Page Brooks<strong>to</strong>ne, an American Chr<strong>is</strong>tian digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Israel,<br />
leaves her tel <strong>to</strong> help a scorned Palest<strong>in</strong>ian couple whose home <strong>is</strong> mystically<br />
charged by romantic ghosts. With her kooky team, Page makes a major<br />
d<strong>is</strong>covery: Jeremiah had a muse <strong>and</strong> a lover, Anatiya, herself a poetic writer <strong>of</strong><br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g verses. As Page acts <strong>to</strong> proclaim <strong>and</strong> protect her work, determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
not <strong>to</strong> repeat the cl<strong>and</strong>est<strong>in</strong>e h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> the Dead Sea Scrolls, she f<strong>in</strong>ds herself<br />
on a voyage <strong>of</strong> self d<strong>is</strong>covery <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> love with an Orthodox Jew.<br />
The novel considers friendship, marriage <strong>and</strong> love juggl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tellectual career<br />
pursuits through Jeremiah’s passion, Page’s quest <strong>and</strong> other subplots. Kle<strong>in</strong>’s<br />
lapidary language <strong>is</strong> the special quality here, especially <strong>in</strong> the fictional scrolls<br />
she creates for Anatiya.<br />
Kle<strong>in</strong>’s well-drawn characters, their failed or fruitful relationships, mirror the<br />
<strong>in</strong>terfaith, mult<strong>in</strong>ational character <strong>of</strong> the fiction’s sett<strong>in</strong>g: contemporary Israel.<br />
Kle<strong>in</strong> skillfully utilizes Israel’s political tensions, religious clashes <strong>and</strong> the rules<br />
<strong>of</strong> archeological claims <strong>to</strong> naturally sharpen her fictional drama. Draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Dust will draw you <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> hold you. Let the Library draw you <strong>to</strong> it.<br />
