History of <strong>Roanoke</strong> Public Art Program:<br />
1983: <strong>Roanoke</strong> Arts Commission (RAC)<br />
established.<br />
2002: Percent for Art Ordinance adopted.<br />
2004-05: First public art plan, “Art for Everyone,”<br />
developed.<br />
2007: First Public Art Coordinator hired.<br />
2008: First new work under Percent for Art<br />
program commissioned to celebrate 125 th<br />
anniversary of the City of <strong>Roanoke</strong>:<br />
“In My Hands” by Rodney Carroll at<br />
<strong>Roanoke</strong> Performing Arts Theatre.<br />
First temporary art exhibit debuted:<br />
“AIR: Art in <strong>Roanoke</strong>.” Eight pieces placed<br />
throughout city for 18 months.<br />
2009: “Reading Garden” by Madeline Wiener<br />
installed outside Gainsboro Library.<br />
“Aspire” Bus Shelter dedicated on<br />
Grandin Road.<br />
2010: “Caring & Strength” Benches installed in<br />
Highland Park.<br />
The <strong>Roanoke</strong> Arts Commission<br />
A citizen body appointed by City Council:<br />
• develops and oversees a public art program<br />
• recommends funding for arts and cultural organizations<br />
• advises on care and maintenance of art works<br />
in collection<br />
• adds to the city’s collection of<br />
regional art work<br />
• partners with schools and other<br />
organizations to recognize the work<br />
of students and regional artists<br />
• guides arts and culture planning<br />
for the city<br />
The Percent for Art Program:<br />
• enhances the quality of life for<br />
<strong>Roanoke</strong>’s citizens<br />
• creates a heightened sense of place<br />
and community identity<br />
• enlivens the visual quality of<br />
public space<br />
• stimulates <strong>Roanoke</strong>’s vitality<br />
