The attempts to found an academic institution in the center of Oltenia were
successful due to the Law no.138/25.04.1947 in favor of the foundation and
organization of the University of Craiova and its auxiliary branches.
Regarding the number of faculties, these are mainly to be found in the following
cities:
1. Bucharest – 193 7. Oradea – 23 13. Târgovişte – 11;
2. Iaşi – 64 8. Braşov – 22 14. Piteşti – 11;
The most important moments in the history of the University of Craiova are
related to:
the stage previous to its official foundation (1848 – 1945)
the period of emergence and functioning of the first academic institutions (1947 – 1965)
the foundation and evolution of the University of Craiova (1966 – 1989)
According to the decision of the Ministerial Council, no. 894, from 27.08.1065
(published in the Official Monitor of R.S.R., no. 2 from 10.09.1965) the
University of Craiova was born
Under the terms of the above mentioned decision the University of Craiova
was to house: The Faculty of Mathematics, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of
Philology, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Electrotechnics, the Faculty of
Agriculture and the Faculty of Horticulture. The agreement stipulated that, as soon as
the University of Craiova had been founded the Agricultural Institute was to end its
activity, its faculties being transferred to the University while the three-year
Pedagogic Institute was to go on functioning together with the Faculty of History –
Geography while the Faculty of Natural Sciences was at the same time
administratively and functionally integrated into the new academic institution.
Between 1966 and 1969 the University of Craiova succeeded in establishing
its own academic structure through the administrative and functional
integration of different specializations into a single unitary institution.
Since 1990 a new stage in the development of the University of Craiova
has begun, characterized by the increasing autonomy of the administrative
structure and the re-organisation of the academic community through the
introduction of new faculties and specializations, computerized educational
process and improvement of laboratories, through fast integration into the
European and international academic circuit.
UNIVERSITY OF CRAIOVA
This stage corresponds to the beginning of the process of reforming the
general educational system in our country, including the academic one
(due to the introduction of new forms of education, the redefinition of the
methods of evaluation, the correlation between instruction and practical
activities, and the experimentation of new techniques of communication
within the academic structures).
The present component of the academic community (structured according to
the nature of specializations: pedagogic, agricultural, juridical, economical and
technical) resulted after the appearance of new faculties (Law, Physical Education and
Sports, Technology, etc) and the reorganization of new ones included in the
University of Craiova:
1. Faculty of Letters;
2. Faculty of Mathematics – Informatics;
4. Faculty of Physics;
5. Faculty of History, Philosophy, Geography;
6. Faculty of Theology;
7. Faculty of Physical Education and Sports;
The Central Building of the University – The Rectorate
The old building of the University of Craiova called wing A, is placed in the
central part of the city, at the intersection of the boulevards Al. I. Cuza in
the South and Carol I in the East.
Over the time, the position of certain entrances has been
changed, passages have been added so as to facilitate
circulation, supplementary spaces have been created through
the construction of separating walls. The stairs in the wings 1 – 6
are made of reinforced concrete.
The building was finished in 1896 and intended for the activities of the
“Palace of Justice”. After its transference to the University, the building
needed numerous modifications required by the good functioning of the
new institution.
Image from 1915
The building of the University is symmetrical being made up of two
distinct U-shaped wings united by a central wing (wing 7), delimitating
the two interior courtyards. The wings 1 – 6 (lateral) are 3.95m – 4.50m
high while the central building has a different structure with a height
varying between 7.30m, 8.40 and 7.85m.
After the earthquake on March 4, 1977 the works of repair and
consolidation of the damaged buildings (Building A “the
Rectorate”, the building of the Faculty of Agriculture and of the
Faculty of Mechanics) emerged as a vital problem for the
institution.
The consolidation of the eastern wing of the University started in
October 1996 being carried on in several stages; it was finished
in the summer of 2002 when the academic activities were
resumed in all the spaces of education.
