Creating your layout
Joining the track sections
Join the track sections together by inserting the pins of each track section into the rail
opening of the other section. Refer to Figure 1. Pins must be fully inserted and track joints
tightly fitted for good electrical contact. The plastic track sections snap together to assure
correct assembly. If the rail openings have become enlarged and fit together loosely, pinch the
rail around a track pin with a pair of pliers. If any pins fall out of the track, be sure to replace
them.
The rails should be kept clean, dry, and free from oil and grease. Remove corrosion and
dirt spots with any commercial non abrasive metal polishing pad to keep your track in top
condition. Wipe the track with a clean soft cloth dampened with track cleaner from the Lionel
Lubrication and Maintenance Set (6-62927).
Creating your layout
Building your layout
You can make one of three layout configurations with the track provided. These layouts are
illustrated in Figure 2.
Basic Circle
Connect all 12 curved track sections to form a simple circle.
Extended Circle
Build a circle, but insert one straight section between every three curve sections. The extended
circle is like a square with rounded corners.
Oval
Divide the basic circle in half and connect the two half-circles with the straight sections. Use
one or two straight sections on each side.
With the track set up and power connected, you are ready to put your train on the track.
1. Place the locomotive on the track first, making sure that all wheels are set properly on the rails.
2. Place the coal tender behind the locomotive, lowering the coupler into position. See
Figure 5.
3. Plug the wire tether on the coal tender into the receptacle on the locomotive, just below the rear of
the cab. Refer to Figure 4.
Note!
The locomotive will not operate unless the wire tether between the locomotive and tender
is connected.
Tether
The locomotive will not operate
unless the wire tether between the
locomotive and tender is connected.
To disconnect the wire tether for
storage, squeeze the latch on the
bottom of the connector and remove
the plug from the locomotive.
Operating the train
All aboard! Now you are ready to get your train under way. Slide the switch on the Power Lockon
to the ON position. The red light on the Lockon will illuminate, indicating that power is going to
the track. Be sure that all the cars’ lights are on; if they are not, check that all the wheels are correctly
placed on the track.
To turn the train and lights off, slide the power button on the Lockon to the OFF position. For even
longer periods it is recommended that the AC Adapter be removed from the wall outlet.
Use the Remote Controller to operate your train. Remove the battery cover on the controller
and insert two AAA batteries into the battery compartment. To operate the train you must aim the
controller in the general direction of the locomotive.
Note!
As with all infrared (IR) controllers, operation is impaired in intense or direct sunlight.

Maintaining and servicing your set
Resolving short circuits
Your Lionel 12V AC Transformer is listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and has been
carefully designed and tested to ensure peak performance.
Note!
The 12V AC Transformer must be unplugged from the wall socket when a short
circuit is noticed, and the short circuit must be corrected.
A short circuit is caused by a direct connection between the two rails. Shorts circuits will
automatically shut off the transformer and cut power to the train. Find and remove the cause
of the short circuit, and the transformer will reset itself within 60 seconds.
Derailed cars can cause a short circuit, so make sure that all wheels are properly set on the
rails. Some other causes of short circuits might be staples, nails, paper clips, or other metallic
objects lying across the rails.
After your 12V AC transformer has been operating for a while, it may become warm. It is
the nature of all electrical power equipment to become warm when in use. If your power pack
is loaded to capacity, let it cool down after several hours of use. Unplug the 12V AC adapter
from the wall when the train is not in use for long periods.
Note!
This train was designed to run with all cars included in this set and up to three
additional cars. Operating additional cars or accessories could cause your 12V AC
adapter to become overloaded.
Parents!
The AC adapter included in this set should be periodically examined for
conditions that may result in the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury. In the
event that such a condition exists, the AC adapter should not be used until
properly repaired or replaced.
11

Maintaining and servicing your set
Cleaning the track
From time to time, it is important to clean the top surface of the track rails. This can be done with
a soft cloth or non abrasive metal cleaning cloth. Failure to do this periodically will cause the
train to run erratically, and eventually it will stop running altogether.
Replacing the lamp in the Caboose
The interior of your caboose is illuminated by one small lamp, Lionel part no. 602-538-9966.
During the course of normal operations, you may find that this lamp requires replacement.
Replacement lamps are available at your authorized Lionel Service Center or from Lionel Service
in Chesterfield, Michigan. This lamp is a standard micro light used on most common holiday light
strings.
To replace the lamp, lift the roof off the caboose cabin. Refer to Figure 6. Pull the expired lamp
straight up from its socket. Install the replacement and reposition the roof on the caboose.
Maintaining and servicing your set
Maintenance and lubrication
Do not attempt to disassemble and/or lubricate the motor on your locomotive. This locomotive
has been factory-tested, and the necessary internal parts have been sufficiently lubricated
at the factory for life. If your locomotive requires service, please bring it to an authorized Lionel
Service Station or Lionel Service for assistance. See the back of this Owner’s Manual for additional
information.
If you experience any squeaking around axles of the locomotive, you may use a drop or two of
Lionel Oil, available in the Lubrication and Maintenance Set (available separately, 6-62090).
Note!
It is very important to keep the track and wheels free from dirt and grease. Wipe them with
a soft cloth whenever they get dirty. This will help the locomotive run more efficiently.
