Local happenings...
Many might consider January to be
the most depressing month of the year.
Christmas has been and gone (I hope yours was good), the winter has well and
truly set in unfortunately and that sensibly pre-booked 2014 summer holiday
is another eight months away. I however think we should all make January our
favourite month, let’s have some cheer left over from Christmas.
CHARITY EVENTS | FUNDRAISERS | FÊTES & FAIRS | GATHERINGS | HAPPENINGS
It’s when you can wipe the slate clean; make some big
decisions about the year ahead and the days are getting
longer – in fact I can see the snowdrops in the garden
already. January is traditionally a quiet month for events
with everyone still resting up from Pantos, parties and
present shopping, but we have found a few ways to keep
you all entertained, so let’s start 2014 as we mean to go
on…
Henley Philatelic Society have some excellent
meetings still to come in the New Year and in January
they ‘do it ourselves’ so they don’t have to bring
speakers out in what could be bad weather. They would
be delighted to see any newcomers who are interested
in collecting anything to do with The Post – stamps,
postcards etc. It is much more enjoyable to share your
hobby so do make a note in your diary to come and see
what you can do with them, rather than hiding them away
in a drawer.
the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Bix
Village Hall at 7.45pm, from September to June inclusive.
Visitors and new members are welcome. For more details
Britain’s No.1 Theatre Organist from the famous home
of ballroom dancing The Tower Ballroom Blackpool will
be in concert on Sunday afternoon, the 12th January
at 3pm. The Tower’s resident organist, Phil Kelsall MBE,
will be giving a guest appearance on the state of the art
theatre organ installed in Henley Town Hall. Phil has just
returned from another successful 32nd season in the
Christmas Show at Thursford where he is affectionately
known as the king of the keyboards. A lively welcome will
be extended from Henley Town Hall, where so many of
his numerous fans from the south will be transported to
the world of Phil Kelsall. Concluding with favourites and
rounded off with a traditional Blackpool Medley.
On Wednesday, 8th January the Member’s Evening
focuses on The Royal Family. Members can display up
to nine pages on any aspect of The Royal Family. The, on
Wednesday, 22nd January, the Chairman’s Evening is all
about ‘Stamp Printing Methods’. There’s another date to
add to your diaries too, Wednesday, 12th March is the
society’s ‘Open Auction’ which gets more popular with
each year and visitors are welcome. Meetings are held on
There’s an Older People’s Health and Welfare drop in
at Amersham Road Community Centre on Friday, 31st
January from 10am to 3pm. There will be information
stands, a seated Yoga class and tea, coffee and lunch
is provided. Everyone is welcome to this free event. If
you need help to get there contact Michelle Brown on
the walk and receive a fun-filled goody bag at the end.
Hot food and refreshments will be available from West
after the age of 11 or 12 without removing healthy adult teeth first.
Starting private treatment earlier can:
● reduce their risk of needing to have teeth removed for brace
Mike Lakey of the RAF will be giving a talk at Henley
Golf Club on 13th January at 8pm. It is entitled ‘Air Sea
Rescue and other Sailing Experiences’ and tells of some of
Mike’s adventures from an officer cadet onwards.
Trained on fixed wing aircraft Mike chose to specialise
on helicopters and flew both in army support, and the
search and rescue role. He flew Sea King helicopters over a
period of 20 years and become the most highly decorated
RAF SAR pilot when he was awarded the George Medal
after rescuing 22 people from a burning and exploding
ship. Latterly, Mike returned to fixed wing ac as a flying
instructor on the Oxford University Air Squadron and then
flew local Air Cadets on air experience flights from RAF
Benson. He also learned to sail in the RAF starting on the
GP14. He has sailed in the Gulf, Hong Kong, Caribbean, the
Falkland Islands and the UK. As a sailing instructor he was
able to extend the training of university cadets beyond
flying into expedition training - there is nothing quite
Listed buildings

Listed buildings
Oxfordshire has 10,370 listed
properties. From pretty thatched
cottages to the Bridge of Sighs
degree of innovation, its design provenance.
Beyond that, selection criteria get ever-stricter:
post-1945 buildings have to be exceptionally significant
to be considered.
When a building or structure is listed it acquires
protected status covering - contrary to popular belief -
its entire plot, or curtilage. In turn this embraces both
the interior and exterior of the property, its immediate
surroundings, previously-added extensions like porches,
canopies or glasshouses and features such as walls, wells,
water pumps and garden statuary.
If this sounds inflexible, it’s not – but it is indispensable.
As countless owners know, regulation is vital if the
errors of the past are to be righted and the challenges of
the future confronted. It’s interwoven with the privilege
of safeguarding our architectural heritage, and all that
entails in maintaining venerable buildings. Or modifying
them: given the appropriate guidelines, there’s no reason
why yesterday’s time-honoured buildings and today’s
time-pressured lives shouldn’t happily coexist.
To make this a reality – after all, the majority of listed
buildings are their owners’ homes – requires a central
resource of counsel and expertise. This is where the
Listed Property Owners Club (LPOC) makes its mark.
www.roundandabout.co.uk
The essential helping hand
For over 20 years LPOC has been Britain’s only advice
service dedicated to supporting the owners of listed
buildings, and promoted as the first port of call for
anyone contemplating such an acquisition. Its small-buthighly-experienced
team – accessible directly, not via a
call centre - dispenses the personal approach crucial to
helping members enjoy their listed property ownership
to the full.
One message LPOC regularly reiterates is that listing a
property does not mean embalming it. At some stage,
it will almost certainly require some form of alteration,
but with expert guidance owners can be steered towards
the right solution and helped to negotiate that potential
minefield called Listed Building Consent, without which
no changes to a listed property are possible. Because
the planning and construction disciplines involved are
(necessarily) stringent, and because legislation constantly
changes, one of LPOC’s key duties is keeping applicants
informed of their rights and responsibilities. At the heart
of the whole culture of listed buildings, LPOC is in a
unique position to clarify contemporary thinking. One of
its fundamental recommendations is that owners make
a point of getting to know their second port of call, the
Conservation Officer of their local authority.
levels. Not only has it provided invaluable assistance
to those looking after historic properties, but, in so
like the experience of changing foresails on a dark and
dirty night in the Irish Sea! Mike made his first helicopter
rescue from a fishing boat off Dubai in 1969 while flying
army support helicopters. Transferring to SAR helicopters
in 1978 Mike flew the Whirlwind for a short time before
training to fly the then new Sea King. He took part in some
notable rescues from burning ships and a collapsed oil
rig; and has rescued people from ships, crashed aircraft,
mountains and yachts. Wow, that’s a lot of heroic stuff.
Looking for a new challenge? Have you considered
volunteering with the National Trust? At Nuffield Place,
the former home of Lord Nuffield, founder of Morris
Motors and Britain’s biggest philanthropist, there’s a
great team of volunteers who assist in the house, garden,
come from all walks of life. For some their work with the
National Trust is a complete departure from their previous
occupations, others use existing skills. They all bring
goodwill commitment and enthusiasm and alongside
their work with the Trust many volunteers meet regularly
for coffee mornings, outings and quiz nights. The Trust
is now looking forward to the next season which starts
on 2nd April. They are holding a Volunteer Open Day on
The achievements of talented young people in
South Oxfordshire have been recognised at a special
ceremony. Twenty-seven people between the ages of 11
and 18 were each awarded with certificates and a cheque
for up to £250 to mark their accomplishments in art, sport
and citizenship. The event, which took place at the Benson
Parish Hall on Wednesday, 4th December, was hosted by
the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of South Oxfordshire
District Council Dorothy Brown and Ann Midwinter and
was part of the Young Achievers Scheme which recognises
young achievers in the fields of arts, sports and citizenship.
£7,000 was distributed among the 27 winners, 25 of
whom attended the presentation event. For a list of all the
winners visit www.southoxon.gov.uk/news. Nominations
for the next round of awards are now open. For further
details and full criteria see www.southoxon.gov.uk/
The UK’s leading rural insurer, NFU Mutual, is urging
horse owners to think about security when purchasing
new tack this winter. According to NFU Mutual’s claims
data, £1.3 million of claims involved items commonly used
by horse owners and farmers including trailers, fencing
equipment, tack and feed. The data comes as no surprise
as farms and livery yards are a favourite hunting ground
for thieves, as they are often unattended when it’s dark 21
Acacia Lodge
Residents have double reason to
celebrate this New Year
The new year is looking bright for the residents and staff of a Henley-on-Thames
care home after their futures were secured by an international care provider.
Due to the difficulties of its previous owners, Acacia
Lodge on Quebec Road, Henley-on-Thames, has been in
the hands of administrators for more than a year.
This week, the care home which provides high quality
residential, nursing and dementia care to 55 residents,
has been bought by Henley Care Management Limited,
part of The Golden House group.
For Stephanie Jones, the home manager, the news
couldn’t have come at a better time.
She said: “To have the future hanging in the balance has
been unsettling for us all, in particular those we care
for. We’ll be having a double celebration this New Year
knowing that the new year is going to be something we
can all look forward to.”
Despite the recent uncertainty relating to the ownership,
Acacia Lodge has remained one of the most popular care
homes in the community with a waiting list of potential
clients eager to make it their home.
The original care team of 80 people, led by Stephanie,
will be staying to provide continuity of care for all 55
residents.
Stephanie added: “We are a very close knit family here
at Acacia Lodge so it is important that to continue with
our high standards of care we keep the same names and
faces. To know that the 55 residents we care for can be
confident that they are remaining in the home they love
is wonderful. For our 80 staff to know that their jobs are
secure is equally amazing this New Year.”
Everything Wood
It’s that time of year again - Everything Wood’s MASSIVE January sale.
Throughout the month they are offering up to 60% off in store and they are
open 7 days a week.
There are some amazing offers to be had on some of the
best solid or engineered wood flooring and oak furniture
around. So, if you haven’t already visited, why not take
this opportunity to pop down to their showroom and
see for yourself the wide range of high quality products.
There are some truly great deals to help refresh your
home.
With over 16 years in the business, partners James Webb
and Darren Wren have built a reputation for sourcing
the very best hardwood timber products from around
the world. Not only have they achieved this excellent
reputation for quality, they also take huge pride in the
fact that they manage to do so at affordable prices.
Wood floors are a classic addition to any home, adding
warmth and character. Moreover, with so many different
types to choose from and a proficient team on hand
to offer advice, you will find it easy to choose the right
product for you and your home.
Over recent years wood flooring has become more and
more popular and the range of flooring available to us
has increased dramatically. Whether it’s traditional,
modern or funky flooring Everything Wood can cater for
most tastes. This season in particular, you’ll find a wider
range than ever. They are especially excited to introduce
a range of new finishes such as smoked and limed.
The result of this popularity means their business
has grown and excitingly, they have just put the
finishing touches to an all new 80m2 flooring and door
showroom. Still based at South Oxford Business Centre
in Garsington, they have extended the original building
to incorporate a bigger flooring gallery and which also
enables them to display a larger amount of oak doors. It
has also made more room in the original showroom for
an extensive range of furniture. Their oak tables, chairs,
wardrobes, cabinets and nests of tables are all beautifully
crafted and they also offer a slightly cheaper alternative
of solid oak furniture to compliment their existing ranges.
Be sure to ask about their painted finishes and their
extensive colour range if you are looking for something a
little more colourful. They’ll assist you with making an
informed choice.
It is this high level of service and attention to the client
that makes them stand apart from the competition. So if
you looking for a great, local business which can meet all
of your flooring and furniture needs, please don’t hesitate
to drop by and see Everything Wood at their showroom.
weet beginnings
Start the New Year not as you mean to go on with these chocolatey treats
January diets and healthy detox
recipes will be everywhere but
keep them for February. Let’s
have one more month of spoiling
ourselves and what better way
to do that than eating chocolate?
Lots of it. If we need an excuse,
we can say we are using up all that
Christmas chocolate we were
given. The children can help with
the chocolate drop scones and
there is a ‘grown-up’ recipe too. I
read somewhere that all the best
meals come to a sweet and sticky
end – and why not?
01. Torta alle Nocciole e
Cioccolato
( Hazelnut and chocolate cake)
A very rich Italian cake from
Piemonte, Northern Italy, which
definitely should be served with some
ice cream or whipped cream. Spoil
yourselves!
Preparation: 35 minutes
Cooking: 40 minutes
Serves: 10
You’ll need a well-buttered cake tin,
27cm in diameter and preheat your
oven to 160°C. Put 400g good dark
chocolate (70% cocoa solids) in a
saucepan over hot water and let it
melt without stiring. Remove from
heat and cool slightly. In a frying
pan, toast 400g blanched hazelnuts
over a gentle heat until they are just
starting to change colour, but don’t
burn them. Grind them in a food
processor until they resemble gritty
breadcumbs but not too fine. With
an electric whisk, beat 400g soft
unsalted butter with 300g caster
sugar and a pinch of salt. When the
mixture is light and fluffy, add the
melted chocolate, mixing well. Then
add 10 eggs, one at a time, until all
are well incorporated. Fold in the
crushed hazelnuts and pour the
mixture into your cake tin. Bake for
about 40 minutes, or until a skewer
inserted in the cake comes out clean.
Open the oven door, turn off the
heat and leave the cake in the oven
for another 30 minutes. When cool,
decorate with sifted cocoa powder.
02. Chocolate and Walnut
Drop Scones
A special tea time treat or even
breakfast! Though they may be eaten
before they reach the table. Everyone
will love them.
Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 10 minutes
Makes: About 30
In one bowl sieve together 225g selfraising
flour, 1 tsp baking powder and
25g cocoa powder. Add 50g caster
sugar. In a second bowl whisk 1 large
egg with 275ml milk and gradually
pour in to the flour mixture, whisking
thoroughly until blended. Stir in
25g finely chopped walnuts. Drop
spoonfuls of the mixture onto a hot,
lightly oiled flat griddle or heavy
frying pan. Cook for about a minute
until bubbles appear on the surface,
then flip over with a pallette knife
and cook the other side. Keep warm
in a clean tea towel while cooking the
remaining drop scones and serve hot
with butter.
It’s always lovely to receive letters from our readers,
so I thought I should share this one with you. It’s from
Jen Healing. “I was lucky enough to win your recent
competition for entry into Oxford Half Marathon on 13th
October. The prize included an informative Run3D running
gait assessment, which helpfully showed me I was wearing
the wrong running trainers. I also received a lovely warm
Oxford Half Marathon hoody and some delicious Urban
Fruit snacks. Despite the horrible wet and windy weather,
I am proud to report that I completed the half marathon
in 1:54, well under my target of two hours. A big thank
you to Round&About Magazine and all that made the day
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Barry’s design transformed my small, dark, miserable garden in to an airy
welcoming space that I actually wanted to spend time in. Friends comments
have mostly been along the lines of - I can’t believe it’s the same space, and ...
It looks bigger than it was. Although a lot of the design was hard landscaping,
Barry’s use of curves gives the garden a very organic feel. In addition his
recommendation of using various mixtures of pavers and slabs hugely added
to visual interest in the garden. I was very pleased indeed with the result and
would recommend Barry and BSW landscapes to any one.
The Loddon Valley Ramblers have been walking the
Berkshire countryside since the club was set up in
1935. They’re a very welcoming group and there is no
commitment to join when you first walk with them. Each
Thursday and Sunday morning, and sometimes at other
times, they offer a short walk of four to six miles, and on
many Sundays there is the chance to take part in a longer
walk of eight to 12 miles. For January’s walks visit the
One of the founding figures of British Pop art in the
early 1960s, Joe Tilson was famous long before the
Beatles and David Hockney. He studied at St. Martin’s
School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art. In 1955
he won the coveted Rome Prize, which took him to live in
Italy where the octogenarian continues to live and work
today. He is a Royal Academician and his artistic career
was celebrated at the Royal Academy in a retrospective
exhibition in 2002. A lifelong dedicated printmaker, Joe
Tilson has gained a reputation as one of Britain’s foremost
artists producing prints, multiples, constructions, paintings
and reliefs. His enduring appeal relies on his consistent
refusal to recognise the artificial divisions between the
unique and the editioned artwork. Many of his prints are
largely hand-painted and his ‘paintings’ are based around
print-making techniques. His early work embraced the
hedonism and optimism of the 1960s and he became a
natural exponent of the ‘Pop Art’ era. I normally would
have told you by now where you could go and see him,
but I got a bit lost in the explanation there. His work is on
display at the Bohun Gallery in Henley from Saturday 1st
to Saturday 22nd February. Entry is free. Find out more by
