Rudells’ annual pre-Christmas event was
held at Spring Grove House, which is set in
“
on arrival, there was an
”
instant “WoW” factor.
The entrance hall was truly magnificent
with its marble gallery staircase,
chequered marble floor and grey marble
pillars. The Christmas tree was exquisitely
dressed, whilst the joyous sounds of the
choir echoed from the balcony with its
jungle themed mural.
150 Vip guests made their way into the
lavishly styled livingstone and Stanley
Rooms which oozed spectacular
opulence. it was the perfect backdrop
for some of Rudells luxury brands to
display their wares. New collections were
on display from Chopard, Fopé, Roberto
Coin, Sharman D’Neill, Theo Fennell, Ti
Sento, Jaeger-leCoultre, Mont Blanc,
longines and Bremont, together with
Rudells’ own exquisite display of diamond
jewellery and watches. Rudells’ new
“embrace” pavé collection was also
greatly received. This can be found
exclusively at both Rudells’ showrooms.
The evening entailed guests of old and
new indulging in champagne and
delicious canapés, whilst browsing for the
perfect Christmas gift. They delighted in
trying on the exquisite diamond set
jewellery and watches, a luxury to be
savoured which the Rudells’ team ensure
is a special and memorable occasion, as
they also share in their knowledge of the
product which is second to none.
one of Rudells’ watchmakers was also
available to offer his expertise and
technical advice, together with one of our
incredibly skilled in-house jewellers who is
a master goldsmith, specialising in
bespoke jewellery, along with restoration,
cleaning and general repairs.
Rudells’ in-store events have proved
highly successful over the past few years,
they are an enjoyable experience and we
have built up a reputation with our clients
for hosting an exemplary evening.
Jon Weston, Rudells’ MD commented, “it
was a great event, well received by our
guests who enjoyed the setting and
marvellous items on show. Having
received our new catalogue just days
before, our clients eagerly await the
Montblanc’s TimeWalker Hemispheres
are a very special kind of world-time
watches, which simultaneously show the
different times in all 24 of the world’s time
zones. The local time in the zone where
the wearer is currently sojourning is
shown by the hands, while the flange
around the dial bears the names of 24
cities, each of which represents one of
the 24 time zones into which our planet
is divided. a 24-hour disc indicating the
hours at the locations positioned radially
opposite the disc’s markings on the
flange turns at the centre of the dial.
presto! The wearer can instantly see
which hour has chimed on clocks in all
of the world’s time zones.
The classical design of the TimeWalker
Voyager uTC shows the time in a second
zone and is unmistakably inspired by the
styling of the TimeWalker ChronoVoyager
uTC chronograph, which was recently
launched with great success. The 42-
mm-diameter stainless steel case with
a narrow stainless steel or satin-finished
titanium bezel leaves plenty of room for
a simple and tidy dial, the design of which
is entirely subordinated to its function.
The broad flange or réhaut around the
dial bears the 24-hour scale for a freely
selectable second time zone; pale- and
dark-coloured zones on the scale enable
it to simultaneously serve as a day/night
indicator. The red tip of an extra-long
skeletonised hour-hand sweeps along
this scale to show the time in the
currently selected second zone. The
smaller hour-hand indicates the local
time, i.e. the hour in the zone where the
wearer is presently sojourning. The
minute-hand and second-hand are valid
for both time zones. This is an ideally
useful function for a banker or
businessman who always wants to keep
his eye on the time where his most
important business associate is currently
located.
This unmistakable Montblanc TimeWalker
design combines a chronograph function,
which is very popular with men, and the
indication of the time in a second zone. it
thus unites two complications that are
extremely useful in daily life. and it
achieves this union in a rather
unconventional manner with central
positioning for both its elapsed-seconds
hand and its hand for sixty elapsed
minutes. This arrangement was very
popular forty years ago, but vanished into
oblivion afterwards. That’s difficult to
understand because this constellation
improves the legibility of elapsed-time
measurements and simultaneously frees
space for a subdial with a 24-hour scale
to show the time in a second zone. The
small seconds at the “6” and the date
window at the “3” complete the ensemble
of this highly functional and exclusive
timepiece.
The new Montblanc TimeWalker
watches will be available in
September 2013.
anniversary.
TO INCLUDE ANNIVERSARY PARTY ON:
THURSDAY 14 TH FEBRUARY 2013
To celebrate this milestone, a week of in-store
promotions was held, together with a special
Champagne and Canapé anniversary party on
Valentine’s day.
Rudells was founded in 1938 by Justin
Rudell and whilst the Wolverhampton
showroom itself has metamorphosed over
the years, one thing has stood the test of
time and that is the Rudells ethos of
being a family jeweller, who genuinely
care about their clients, whilst offering an
exceptional personal service and the
world’s most prestigious brands. if Justin
were alive today then we feel he would be
very proud that his legacy had continued
into the 21st century. To commemorate
this, Rudells launched a very special
pendant aptly named “legacy”.
The “legacy” pendant was designed on
the basis of the initials of our founder and
is available in yellow, white or rose gold,
set with a brilliant-cut diamond. each
colour is limited to 25 pieces and retails
at £795.00. The pendant comes with a
limited edition Certificate to guarantee
the colour and clarity of the diamond.
iTV’s emma Jesson is the face of
“legacy” and she attended a photo shoot
at the Wolverhampton showroom during
the celebratory week.
The launch of the pendant took place at
both the Wolverhampton and Harborne
showrooms on 14 February, where Vip
parties were held at lunchtime. Many
local business leaders and owners who
have traded in Wolverhampton were
invited, along with local dignitaries and
celebrities.
part of the Wolverhampton showroom
had undergone an in-store refurbishment
to feature dedicated Rolex and patek
philippe watch salons in readiness for the
75th anniversary Celebrations. Guests
were delighted with the new look, as
“
Geneva, 23 January 2013
– at the Salon international de
Geneva, iWC Schaffhausen
hosted around 800
international guests and
media representatives from
around the globe for the
launch of its new ingenieur
watches.”
“iWC’s passion for engineering
excellence, for the highest technical
performance and for precision has earned
it a high profile over the years. We
associate these attributes with motor
racing in general, but with the
MeRCeDeS aMG peTRoNaS Formula
one Team in particular,” explains
Georges kern, Ceo of iWC.
He is clear about the motives for his
company’s new commitment. “as their
official engineering partner for the next 3
years, we have forged a cohesive link
between our ingenieur line of watches
and the thrills and heritage of Formula
one. our latest innovations are
dedicated to this partnership.
This evening marks the start of the
relaunch of this tradition-steeped watch
family from the House of iWC,”
adds kern.
around one hundred international
journalists lined the red carpet as a
throng of friends and guests of iWC made
their appearance: Jean Reno, peter
followed by Roberto Di Matteo, Marc
Tim Jefferies and John Helliwell also
graced the iWC Race Night with their
presence, while Richard krajicek, Ferzan
by the world of technology and ingenieur
Before the guests settled into the gala
evening, Georges kern gave tours of the
iWC exhibition stand during the
afternoon. Just under 1,000 square
metres offer a fitting space for
motorsport, its innovation and
development, and the Silver arrows
legend. Between the wind tunnel, home
straights, pit lane and the original
Mercedes-Benz 300 SlR Silver arrow
from 1955, there is room for authentic
motorsport exhibits, a dismantled
Formula one racing car from the
MeRCeDeS aMG peTRoNaS Formula
atmosphere, ambassadors such as ewan
contact with the new watch collection
from iWC.
The Schaffhausen manufacturer displays
its historic ingenieur watches from the
1950s in mechanical showcases, in the
style of moving pistons. The latest
models in this extremely masculine
collection are also present. The
partnership with the MeRCeDeS aMG
peTRoNaS Formula one Team is again
underpinned by the fact that some
watchmaking innovations use the same
high-tech materials as automotive
engineering. For the first time in the
history of iWC, a timepiece makes a
proud appearance in an attractive carbon
case. Titanium, titanium aluminide,
ceramic and platinum provide other eyecatching
features within the collection.
“Motorsport means perfection,
technology, action and emotion. We
celebrate and display all these
characteristics at our stand, so our
guests can savour the world of
performance engineering,” concludes
the roar of a Formula one racing car
and Ceo Nick Fry as well as Nico
Rosberg, kevin Spacey explored the
common ground with watchmaking
between some prominent guests ensued
when Nico Rosberg invited them to
adriana lima, Russian gymnast alexei
after Jamiroquai singer Jay kay arrived in
IMPERIALE Collection
a true classic from the House of Chopard, the imperiale watch
collection is welcoming new variations. This year sees the
introduction of a steel chronograph, while the majestic lines of this
collection are enriched with yellow gold.
The serene strength of its details distils a
wealth of details that are all nods to the
heyday of the imperial age. These include
the Roman numerals punctuating the dial
and marking off the hours. This elegant
frame surrounds a centre subtly
reminiscent of a painting by great master,
featuring a delicately carved mother-ofpearl
backdrop graced with motifs calling
to mind the embroidered cushions that
used to bear the royal insignia. This
refined canvas is swept over by
exquisitely curved hands evoking the
sharp daggers used by sovereigns in
combat.
a crown delicately curved like a lotus
flower and set with an amethyst
cabochon is fitted to a case middle with
pure, sleek sides designed to give the
model a lighter and more luminous glow.
The shape of the lugs echoes the
tradition of ancient columns that are
famed for their perfectly balanced
proportions, while the gold models are
enhanced by an ultimate touch of
refinement in the shape of amethyst
cabochons set on the lugs.
this elegant timepiece. With its
blend of carefree charm and
firm assurance, the imperiale
jewellery collection rejuvenates
the imperial myth by adding a
”
decidedly modern touch.
This line inspired by the imperiale watch
is pervaded by an intimate and refined
boudoir spirit expressed through a wealth
of subtle and delicate details. The motif
which adorns the dials of the watches,
inspired by the traditional embroideries
that used to decorate imperial gowns and
cushions, blossoms on pendants, sleeper
earrings, rings, and slender bracelets.
The white or rose gold curves of the
jewellery, which can be polished or set
with diamonds, provide fascinating
glimpses of the velvety skin beneath, or
are lit up by the soft sparkle of amethyst,
pink quartz or chalcedony.
at times ethereal and delicate or precious
and voluptuous, the imperial motif lends
itself to a wide range of refined
compositions. a clever play on light and
on volumes endows this jewellery with an
undeniable aura of majesty. imbued with
a sophisticated sensuality, the imperiale
jewellery collection radiates a stately
allure that is at once forceful and fragile.
The sheer wealth and finesse of its details
make the imperiale collection an
eminently feminine model, and its
timeless chic revives the spirit and the
splendour of imperial classicism. With
these latest models, yellow gold makes
its grand entrance into the watches of
this collection, setting off the perfection
of their majestic lines to magnificent
effect. The chronograph with a steel case
that is also being introduced brings a
resolutely contemporary twist to the
imperiale collection.
Control and Superfast Chrono are indeed the
first watches in this iconic collection to be
equipped with Chopard movements entirely
designed, developed and assembled inhouse,
in the Fleurier ebauches workshops.
Chopard is laying a new milestone in its
rich history. The Classic Racing
collection, which features timepieces
paying tribute to the automobile world,
is welcoming three new highly
distinctive Superfast models: automatic,
power Control and Chrono, all equipped
with Chopard movements from the
Fleurier ebauche workshops. These
three exceptional creations represent a
further step along the path towards
independence – an ideal deeply
cherished by Chopard.
For many years, the House of Chopard
has been a loyal partner of legendary
classic car races, including the Grand
prix de Monaco Historique and the Mille
Miglia – a rally covering 1,000 miles
(1,600 km) running from Brescia to
Rome and back. The SuperFast
collection now takes the world of
precision watch-making to thrill-seeking
sports-car drivers who are not afraid
of power.
SLEEK AND IMPOSING
Superfast models are generously sized
while displaying bold lines and a
resolutely virile design. Now equipped
with a specially decorated in-house
movement, they are intended for
devotees of fine watchmaking capable
of taming the inevitable feeling of power
they procure.
These three new Superfast models
carry a number of references to the
world of competitive car racing, starting
with the dial of each, displaying silver
brushed vertical lines against a black
background evoking the cooling fins
found on air-cooled racing engines. on
the inner bezel ring of the new
Superfast watches, the minute numerals
adopt the appearance of the markers
that adorn sports-car rev-counters and
speedometers.
equipped with a 18-carat rose gold
folding clasp, the natural rubber strap
carries the smooth tread of the slick
tyres immediately identifiable with highspeed
track motor racing.
A FURTHER STEP
TOWARDS
INDEPENDENCE
These Chopard movements are
produced in the Fleurier ebauches
workshops. This company was founded
in July 2008 in Fleurier, in the Val-de-
Travers region (Canton Neuchâtel) in
order to produce in-house movements
for Chopard.
Several months earlier, in December
2008, Chopard had acquired a 6,000
m2 plot of land that already housed an
industrial building with a 5,100m2
production surface area. entirely
renovated and equipped with state-ofthe-art
machinery, the new company
premises were inaugurated in
February 2009.
endowed with an annual production
capacity of 5,000 movements in 2012
(a figure that is expected to rise to
15,000 movements/year by 2015),
Fleurier ebauches expresses the
determination of Chopard co-president
karl-Friedrich Scheufele to strengthen
the group’s vertical integration in order
to ensure its long-term independence,
while also increasing production. in
1996, the group had already created
Chopard Manufacture, a company
located near Fleurier ebauches and
which represents the Haute Horlogerie
division dedicated to developing,
producing and assembling l.u.C
watchmaking excellence.
a reflection of the gymnast’s ribbon that
floats and infinitely spirals in a display of
balletic beauty and discipline, the patek
to all aspects of the watchmakers’ craft –
particularly the gem setters’ art.
sapphire-crystal case back, which allows
the owner to observe the consummately
finished movement at work, and with an
patek philippe opens up a new chapter in
cushion-shaped case that looks as
topical today as the 1920s and 1930s art
Deco showpieces in the patek philippe
Museum that inspired it.
Fortunately, as an independent company,
patek philippe can make all decisions
based on grounds of design and taste,
rather than commercial pressures. Taking
great pride in keeping traditional skills
and know-how alive, it is paramount that
all designs also use the most advanced
technologies to deliver a perfect finish,
technically and aesthetically. it is a
combination of both that makes patek
IMPORTANCE OF
MAINTENANCE
a patek philippe watch is an
investment we trust will be enjoyed by
future generations. in order to
safeguard the integrity and longevity
of your investment, commitment is
required not just from patek philippe,
but also from the watch owner.
Regular service is recommended at
intervals of between three and five
years, depending on the type of watch
and its general wear and tear. in some
ways, the care and maintenance of a
watch can be compared with that of a
car. Just as one would expect to have
their car checked at regular intervals,
this is what must be done with a
timepiece.
like cars, watches of course contain
mechanical components, albeit
considerably smaller; a simple selfwinding
mechanical movement has
between 150 and 350 parts.
These components require regular,
though not frequent, attention. as with
a car engine, certain parts simply
need to be cleaned and re-lubricated
to ensure they do not wear down,
potentially necessitating more serious
repair work in the future.
unofficial servicing of patek philippe
watches can sometimes be the
reason why heavy repair is required
instead of simple routine service. our
international Customer Services, with
a network of more than 57 authorized
Service Centers in 36 countries
around the world, employs the highest
level of dedicated specialists to take
care of the maintenance and
restoration of patek philippe watches.
There is no reason why a patek
philippe watch should not last forever.
However, part of the responsibility for
guaranteeing the value of your watch
for future generations must also lie
with you, the owner.
THE MANUFACTURE
Jaeger-LeCoultre
CELEBRATES ITS
180 TH ANNIVERSARY
“
This anniversary will be
commemorated by the
introduction of some
exceptional timepieces, as
well as the holding of
exclusive exhibitions and
events around the world.”
a major player in watchmaking history since
the 19th century, in 2013 Jaeger-leCoultre is
celebrating 180 years of continuous
development around its founder’s original
workshop.
The adventure began in 1833 when selftaught
watchmaker antoine leCoultre set
up his own workshop after inventing a
pinion-cutting machine. This invention was
to be followed by dozens of others, as well
as hundreds of patents, each of which
contributed to forging the international
reputation of Swiss watchmaking. The
small workshops grew so fast that it was
soon nicknamed the “Grande Maison” in
the Vallée de Joux. By 1888, the
Manufacture already employed around
500 watchmakers, technicians and artists.
over the past 180 years, Jaeger-leCoultre
has created and produced over 1,200
different calibres and filed more than 400
patents. The Grande Maison has a number
of world firsts to its credit, along with
superlative achievements and legendary
watches such as the Reverso, the
Duoplan, the Memovox, the polaris, the
Gyrotourbillon 1 and 2, the Duomètre line,
as well as the perpetual atmos clock.
Today, over 1000 people work within the
Manufacture and master all the forms of
expertise required to make this brand one
of the most inventive in the watch industry.
The creation of this model is a dizzying
feat that sets a connoisseur’s heart
beating as fast as its mechanism. it pays
tribute to antoine leCoultre and to the
180 years of the Manufacture by brilliantly
rising to an authentic mechanical feat.
absolute precision treasured by the
founder of the Manufacture JaegerleCoultre.
Within a large 42 mm case,
Jaeger-leCoultre Calibre 985 beats to the
rhythm of a flying tourbillon and is
equipped with a cylindrical balancespring,
forming an ensemble
guaranteeing exceptional precision timing
performances. The tourbillon is a major
feat in itself. its grade 5 titanium carriage,
its large 14-carat balance and its
cylindrical balance-spring developed by
Jaeger-leCoultre create an impression of
its new extra-white platinum case pays
tribute to the 19th century and draws
inspiration from the style codes
characterising pocket-watches. its array
of design details reflects these same
codes: hour-markers, a traditional minute
circle, and a silver-toned grained dial
finish. The superbly understated new
“dauphine” hands make a perfect match
with the classic nature of the model.
The sapphire crystal serves to admire the
hand-crafted decorations reflecting a
The latest creation from the Manufacture
opts for a movement which singlehandedly
embodies a miniature
watchmaking revolution: the new
automatic winding mechanical
movement, Jaeger-leCoultre Calibre 985,
of which the tourbillon – equipped with a
cylindrical balance-spring – puts on a
spectacular watchmaking performance.
The watch, equipped with a flying (or
cantilevered) tourbillon and a perpetual
calendar, has been created in complete
respect for the noblest watchmaking
traditions and is in tune with the quest for
levitation: the tourbillon appears to be
suspended in mid-air at the heart of the
movement. The perpetual calendar
provides a crystal-clear display of the day,
date, month and year, alongside with the
moon phases; while the daring small
seconds counts off precious moments
above the flying tourbillon.
in terms of aesthetics, the Master Grande
Tradition Cylindrique à Quantième
perpétuel features the perfect balance
between classicism, purity and relevance
– a means of associating its historical
origins with elegant modernity.
profound respect for traditional
watchmaking. The 22-carat gold
oscillating weight bears a reproduction of
the gold medal that Jaeger-leCoultre
won at the 1889 paris universal
exposition in recognition of its horological
expertise and its spirit of invention. The
equally visible cylindrical balance-spring
of the flying tourbillon also serves as a
reminder of the extent to which the
horological complications featured in the
timepiece appear to be moving in an
entirely different sphere.
over 180 years ago, antoine leCoultre
imagined one of the finest watchmaking
adventures ever. in tribute to its founding
father, the Manufacture dedicates a
collection of three watches to him
including the Master ultra Thin Jubilee,
the world’s thinnest mechanical manuallywound
watch.
presents a new ultra-thin wristwatch.
With a new case measuring just 4.05 mm
thick and a movement reflecting the full
horological expertise of Jaeger-leCoultre,
this creation has found its place within
the legacy of exceptional watches
produced by the Manufacture.
it is in this same spirit of boldness,
excellence and perfection that the Master
ultra Thin Jubilee is now being
introduced. its refined design epitomises
the absolute triumph of excellence.
slenderness. all its components have
been designed so as to keep the overall
thickness of the watch to an absolute
minimum.
admirably surpassing the function of
signalling the passing of time and instead
becoming a showcase for this major
horological accomplishment, the
movement is produced and assembled in
the complications workshop of the
Manufacture Jaeger-leCoultre.
at 4.05 mm thick, it sets a new record for
horological slenderness. its perfect circle
is matched by a pure design inspired by
an ultra-thin 1907 pocket-watch.
Through this new accomplishment, the
founder’s creative approach to his
profession is more vibrantly alive than
ever. Setting a record as the world’s
thinnest manually-wound mechanical
movement, the ultra-thin pocket-watch
created in 1907 heralded a new chapter
in the history of the Grande Maison. in
2013, in tribute to 180 years of
watchmaking tradition, Jaeger-leCoultre
its “knife-shaped” ultra-thin case in extrawhite
platinum measuring 39 mm in
diameter is the ultimate expression of a
timeless minimalist philosophy. The hourmarkers,
the traditional minute circle and
the grained silver-toned finish of its dial
are inspired by the aesthetic of the
historical pocket-watches by JaegerleCoultre,
while radiating an admirable
sense of elegance and clarity.
at its heart beats mechanical manuallywound
Calibre 849 measuring a mere
1.85 mm thick and which reflects the
horological expertise of the Grande
Maison in the field of extreme
in a nod to the 180th anniversary of the
Manufacture, the date 1833 placed
beneath the logo will be the hallmark of
the 880-piece limited series.
a vibrant tribute to antoine leCoultre, the
Master ultra Thin Jubilee is the visible
result of intangible principles combining
respect for time-honoured know-how with
an indomitable innovative force enabling
Jaeger-leCoultre to remain a major player
in watchmaking history for the past 180
years.
“
Rudells would like to
congratulate Clive or
“Mr Brown” as he is fondly
known amongst his work
colleagues, for his 25 years
loyal service, he is a valuable
asset to the company and an
”
integral part of the team.
in 1987 he was scouring the Jewellery
Trade Gazette and stumbled upon an
advert for a Senior Sales person at J J
Rudell & Co ltd. This ad had caught his
eye, hence he applied for the job and was
interviewed by anthony Rudell and John
Harlow. Clive’s first impression of the
showroom was that Rudells had an
extensive range of high quality goods for
which he admired. Consequently, he was
offered the job and commenced his
employment on 1 august 1987 at the age
of 26.
Clive’s interest in silverware began when
he was about 10 years old, as his family
had a few items of silver which intrigued
him and his fascination spiralled from
there. By the age of 13 his interest
progressed and he began to bury himself
in books, studying at every given
opportunity, as he was enamoured by the
exquisite craftsmanship that went into
producing such fine art. He regularly
attended antique fairs in Birmingham and
further afield, familiarising himself with the
trade and observing how to barter to get
the best possible price.
after a few weeks of settling into his new
position at Rudells, Clive brought in a
piece of silverware that he had bought at
an antique fair for anthony Rudell to look
at and he asked him if he could try to sell
it in the shop. Clive would frequently
attend trade fairs in his spare time as
silver was his passion and he had
observed that there was a niche in the
market at Rudells for such items. To
anthony’s surprise the item was sold
within its first week! anthony was
impressed with Clive’s enthusiasm and he
began to take note of his expertise in
antique silver. progressively, after that
first sale, the antique silverware within the
showroom increased.
anthony Rudell also had a passion for
antique silver and Clive delighted in
relaying the following anecdote: on one
occasion (approximately 15 years ago)
anthony and Clive went together to a
large antique fair. Clive advised anthony
to “dress down” as he was wise to the
fact that if the tradesmen thought you
were well off, then they would make you
“pay through the nose”, as items on
display were not priced. anthony took
Clive’s advice and turned up on the day
duly dressed down for the occasion in his
old golfing gear. as they browsed around
the stalls anthony took particular interest
in a piece of silver, however, to Clive’s
horror, after his wise words of wisdom
about playing things down, anthony
proceeded to whip out his 18ct gold
monogrammed eyeglass, on an 18ct gold
chain from beneath his golfing jacket!
Thankfully for anthony a price had already
been agreed on the item with the dealer,
as the expression on the dealer’s face
when he saw the eyeglass was one that
Clive will never forget!
Clive’s knowledge of the subject was
second to none and as a result of this, he
would buy snuffs, vinaigrettes and vesta
boxes for anthony Rudell’s private
collection. He also bought for the
Birmingham assay office for their silver
collection. He would view various items
and make purchases on their behalf.
25 years on, Clive is a very valued
member of the Rudells’ Team and a great
asset to the family jewellers.
Well done Clive!!
GLORIOUS
GOODWOOD
“
over 100,000 people
flock through the gates each
year to enjoy this chic, relaxed
and incredibly glamorous fiveday
festival that celebrates the
very best from the world of
fashion and horseracing.”
Widely acknowledged as the sporting and
social highlight of the summer, Glorious
Goodwood (Tuesday 30 July to Saturday 3
august 2013) is a quintessentially english
event, synonymous with elegance and style.
part of the unique appeal of Goodwood
Racecourse is its incredible setting. High
in the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is
renowned as being one of the most
beautiful racecourses in the united
kingdom. it forms a key part of the
magnificent 12000 acre Goodwood
estate; situated just outside Chichester
with stunning views out to sea and as far
as the isle of Wight on a clear day. The
looped course hosts around 130 flat
races each season: including two highlyregarded
Group 1 races (Sussex Stakes
and Nassau Stakes), six Group 2s and
eight Group 3s annually. as top racing
pundit John McCririck puts it, “if you ever
come racing, there is no better place than
Goodwood.”
Glorious Goodwood is no exception, with
the standard of horse racing always
exceptionally high. Throughout history it
has attracted the finest equine talent with
the likes of wonder-horse Frankel having
graced the Downs in recent years to the
delight of race-goers who come from far
and wide to experience the Festival's
unique atmosphere. actor Clive owen
sums it up quite simply, “it is considered
one of the great meetings of the year.
That’s why they call it Glorious.” a total of
13 Group contests over the course of the
week, including three races from the
prestigious British Champions Series, and
over £4million in prize money emphasises
the calibre of racing on offer at Glorious
Goodwood and 2013 will be just as
exciting.
However for many, world class horse
racing is really just the back-drop to a
fabulous day out, and Glorious is quite
unique. according to top model and diehard
equestrienne Jodie kidd, “There is
something very, very special about
Goodwood and especially Glorious
Goodwood. it’s quintessentially english.”
Glorious is widely regarded as one of the
most stylish race meetings in the uk and
yet, unusually, this doesn’t come about
through the enforcement of stringent
dress codes. in fact, it is quite the
opposite…
71
GloRiouS GooDWooD
you won’t find gents in top hats and stiff
suits or ladies in ludicrous hats and heels
at Goodwood. it really is not the done
thing. instead linen suits, pretty dresses,
chic millinery and the ‘quintessentially
Goodwood’ panama Hat are the order of
the day when the racing and society
crowd comes to Sussex. it is an all
together more relaxed vibe, and that is
quite deliberate, as it was championed by
king edward Vii back in 1904.
edward was Goodwood’s biggest royal
fan. as prince of Wales and then king he
never missed a July meeting and
affectionately dubbed it, “a garden party
with racing tacked on”. in 1904 he took
advantage of the custom that male
fashion would follow the king and turned
up at Goodwood with a white silk topper
instead of the regulation black one. Male
followers of fashion were sent scurrying
back to the capital as london hatters
were begged to supply the ‘royal model’
overnight. Two years later he completed
the sartorial downgrade with a switch
from morning suit to suit, worn with the
choice of a white bowler/derby, a panama
or an ordinary straw hat. Being freed of
the stiff collar and long skirts gave
Goodwood a much more relaxed holiday
feel than any other racecourse at the
time, and it is an atmosphere that it has
retained to this day.
part of the enduring society appeal of
Glorious is its dates. at its inception in
the early 1800s it was held in late May,
right in the middle of the traditional social
season. By 1814 the fourth Duke of
Richmond had moved it to its now
traditional slot in late July. This proved an
immediate success as it coincided neatly
with the end of the london season and
the aristocracy leaving town to retire to
their country estates for the remainder of
the summer. it is perhaps yet another
reason why it had a relatively informal
atmosphere, one which was greatly
appreciated by its high-profile visitors
who attended year after year and the
hundreds of thousands who still do.
it probably also helps that Goodwood has
aristocratic blood running through its
veins. Seat of the Dukes of Richmond
since 1697, the present Duke of
Richmond’s son - the affable earl of
March, is current custodian of Goodwood
House. He overseas the running of the
business, which has achieved with great
success what so many other stately
homes lust after. Comprising not only the
racecourse but also a four star hotel,
elegant private members club, retro
motor racing circuit, an aerodrome, two
golf courses, an organic farm and a farm
shop. Goodwood also plays host to a
number of high-profile events each year
including the hugely popular motor sport
events the Festival of Speed (11-14 July
2013) and the Goodwood Revival (13-15
September 2013).
“it will come as little surprise
that fast horses and even faster
cars attract a plethora of big
names to West Sussex
”
throughout the year.
it is quite the place to see and be seen
and from rock stars to royalty a-list faces
are commonplace, yet stylishly low-key,
of course. The grassy country car park
boasts models any top Mayfair showroom
would be proud to display and guest lists
are a veritable who’s who.
one of the highlights of Glorious
Goodwood is undoubtedly ladies’ Day,
celebrated on the Thursday of race week
each year. Needless to say the style
stakes are raised, and the parade ring
resembles a catwalk for high-end fashion
and beautiful people. in honour of
celebrating all things female and raising
some serious sums of money for
women’s charities, Goodwood launched
an all female, amateur horse race, the
Magnolia Cup, in 2011. Twelve plucky
ladies, selected for their outstanding
achievements, were each lent a horse
and taught to race by a top trainer. a host
of top female designers were also
brought in to design the race silks,
ensuring that each lady jockey looked the
part. Supermodel and face of Burberry,
edie Campbell, won the inaugural event
wearing silks designed by Jasmine
Guinness. The london-born beauty said
of the race, “i couldn’t resist a chance to
be involved in such a fun experience that
raises so much money for charity.”
However she was unable to defend her
crown in 2012, with jewellery designer,
philippa Holland, winning a thrilling
second edition of the race whilst sporting
fetching Frost French silks.
lady March the exclusive guest list of
300 enjoyed a number of exciting events
as the evening unfolded, including a
performance by a surprise big-name
musical act; Courtney love in 2011 and
paloma Faith in 2012. This year will be
no different as this remarkable Society
event goes from strength to strength. The
Regency Ball culminates in an incredible
torchlight horse race on the park in front
of The House.
The Magnolia Cup and Regency Ball have
so far raised hundreds of thousand of
pounds for the nominated ladies’ Day
charities. in 2013 they are the Haven
Breast Cancer Support Centres and Best
Beginnings, a charity working to give
every baby in the uk the healthiest start
in life. Top designers are once again hard
at work designing the silks and at racing
yards throughout the country celebrity
ladies are riding out and honing their
skills. Doubtless it will be a jewel in the
crown of another fine Festival at
Goodwood.
There are some other unexpected events
at Goodwood during the Glorious week,
ensuring that the chaps also get a look in.
Who knew that the game of cricket owes
much of its heritage to the estate?
Records show that cricket was first
played there in 1702, and in 1722 a game
was played between the 2nd Duke of
Richmond and a Mr Brodrick of peper
Harrow park, near Godalming, Surrey. as
was common in those days there was a
wager on the match and a set of rules
was drawn up. These rules are the oldest
set of written cricket rules in the world.
The originals are kept at Goodwood
House, with a copy in the club pavilion
there and one at lord’s. So naturally it is
celebrated on the park in front of the
House, again for charity, with an all-star
match played on Tuesday, the opening
day of Glorious. lord March fields a xi to
challenge a celebrity xi in a typically
relaxed affair. Spirits are high, a barbecue
sizzles, the event is open to the public to
watch and a jolly nice time is had by all.
oh, and some cricket gets played.
The thing about Glorious Goodwood is
that it is just so terribly english; the
perfect antidote to a hectic summer
gallivanting from one event to the next up
in town. it is easy to see why it has
remained so popular: it has retained the
very charm that made it so appealing
some two hundred years ago, and long
may it continue. i’ll raise a stylishly chilled
G&T to that.
BoSCoBel HouSe
aND THe Royal oak
Boscobel House was built in about 1632,
when John Giffard of Whiteladies
converted a timber-framed farmhouse
into a hunting lodge. The Giffard family
were Roman Catholics, at a time when
the religion suffered persecution. Tradition
holds that the true purpose of Boscobel
was to serve as a secret place for the
shelter of Catholics in times of need.
The house was, however, destined for
greater fame. Following the execution of
king Charles i in 1649, his eldest son
made a brave though misguided attempt
to regain the throne. in 1651 his hopes
were crushed at Worcester in the final
conflict of the Civil War. young Charles
was forced to flee for his life. initially
the future king Charles ii set out to cross
the River Severn into Wales, but found his
way blocked by Cromwell's patrols. He
sought refuge instead at Boscobel, hiding
first in a tree which is now known as The
Royal oak and then spending the night in
a priest-hole in the house's attic. He then
travelled on in disguise via other safe
houses before escaping to France.
Boscobel later became a much visited
place, although it remained a working
farm. Visitors can also see the dairy,
farmyard, smithy, gardens, and a
descendant of The Royal oak. White
places, is nearby.
The vast and rambling remains of this
palatial 19th century mansion,
surrounded by magnificent landscaped
gardens & containing huge stone
fountains, provide a great day out in
Worcestershire. The largest fountain,
representing perseus and andromeda -
now restored - was described as making
the 'noise of an express train' when fired.
Before 1846, when William Humble Ward
(later first earl of Dudley) inherited Witley
Court, the land surrounding the house
was laid out in the 18th century english
landscape style. William andrews
Nesfield, whose skills in designing
intricate and elegant parterres were
complemented by his great ability as an
artist and engineer, was called in to
transform the estate, creating the South
parterre with its great perseus and
andromeda fountain and elegantly
designed planting and clipped evergreens
and shrubs.
Following the disastrous fire in 1937, the
Witley estate, including its gardens, fell
into long decline. english Heritage has
restored the south garden. in addition,
Wolfson Foundation funding has assisted
with major restoration works in the east
parterre garden which was completed
early in 2011. This funding also enabling
us to plan development of the formal
gardens based on the original Nesfield
designs. The showpiece Woodland Walks
IT’S A NAME ETCHED
INTO BRITISH MOTOR
From the days of the pre-War Silver arrows
Gp cars right through to modern times,
millions have flocked to the heart of england
to experience the thrills and excitement of
world leading events staged at one of the
“
a packed calendar of topclass
motoring action is
already revved up and raring
to roar into 2013, but
Donington is not all about
what’s happening on the race
track.”
it’s also a sought-after venue for
conferences, exhibitions, corporate days,
driving experiences and track days and
the home of the world’s largest collection
of Grand prix racing cars in its very own
on-site museum, The Donington Grand
prix Collection.
With this year seeing the return of the
officially supported Honda Ron Haslam
Race School, the circuit is once again
back at the top of its game, just two
racing seasons after rising phoenix-like
from the ashes of its 2009 enforced
closure.
The first motorcycle race was held on the
Donington Hall estate on Whit Monday,
1931, and, in1933 the narrow track was
widened, made permanent and became a
venue for Grand prix car racing until
World War ii when it was requisitioned by
the Ministry of Defence as a military
vehicle depot.
The park was then purchased in 1971 by
local man Tom Wheatcroft, who was
passionate about motorsport and the
circuit and, in the next few decades,
Donington became one of the uk’s
favourite venues, not just for motor sport
but music - some of the biggest heavy
rock bands have headlined there -
Sunday markets and more.
in 2007 the Wheatcroft family sold a 150-
year lease to a leisure company but,
sadly, by 2009 it went into administration
and Donington had to close.
83
DoNiNGToN paRk
However, under the chairmanship of
Tom’s son kevin and an all-new
management team, it re-opened the
following year and has completely
revitalised itself and continues to be
synonymous with racing.
in 1987, the staging of the FiM World
Championship British Motorcycle Grand
prix, brought record numbers through the
turnstiles and they continue to flock: lined
up for 2013 is a host of two and fourwheel
championships, including British
Touring Cars, Donington Historic Festival
and the World and British Superbike
Championships.
The Honda Ron Haslam Race School,
providing riding experience to all ages
and abilities, marks the welcome return of
an old friend for Honda and Ron Haslam
founded the original school here in the
early 1990s.
as befits any modern venue, Donington
has much to offer the business
community, as well as the sports fan with
a wealth of conference suites ranging in
capacity from two to 800. The Donington
exhibition and Conference Centre, has
more than 4,400 sq ms of ground floor
space and a capacity of 6,000.
events range from conferences and gala
dinners to trade shows and product
launches with the dedicated on-site
caterers providing the full gamut of
catering requirements, be it a simple
sandwich to an executive gala dinner.
Whether you want the thrill of a race
meeting, the cut and thrust of a business
gathering, to view the museum collection,
organise hospitality or buy a great day
out in the form of gift vouchers or season
LUXURY
BRITISH GIFTS
over the generations, Halcyon Days has
developed into a British brand that has
become synonymous with outstanding
quality and charm.
“
each product is
handcrafted in england and
made using the finest
materials. our craftsmen and
artists take great pride in
delivering luxury products of
”
the highest standard
Founded in 1950 by Susan Benjamin in
the heart of Mayfair, Halcyon Days began
as a small, independent shop specialising
in antique english enamels – in particular
the charming keepsake box.
The craft of hand-painting on copper,
which flourished during the second half of
the 18th century had almost disappeared
by the 1830s and consequently, antique
enamels grew extremely rare. it was this
rarity that led to the revival in 1970 of the
classic english craft.
Today, the enamels are still produced in
our own workshops and design studios
located in the heart of the Midlands,
where the craft began in the 17th century.
Made by a team of highly skilled artists,
using traditional english enamelling
techniques that have been handed down
through generations, they continue to
demonstrate the very best of British
craftsmanship.
as well as the classic english enamels,
Halcyon Days has an extensive range of
luxury home and lifestyle collections with
a contemporary twist. These include
sumptuous cashmere throws, fine bone
china gift sets and hand painted bowls,
as well as a wide assortment of ladies
accessories and gentleman’s gifts -
including fashionable enamel bangles, silk
scarves, cufflinks and leather goods.
Halcyon Days is proud to have been
granted three royal warrants as Suppliers
of objets d’art and continues to celebrate
the very best of British craftsmanship and
design, offering its clients true
works of art.
BROMSGROVE
- AN EXCITING SCHOOL
“a remarkably impressive and exciting
school driven with imagination and
dynamism by an exceptional head”
THe GooD SCHoolS GuiDe 2013
Bromsgrove School is five hundred years old, but its golden age
is now. it is as twenty-first century as tomorrow, and tomorrow
will be better than today. The stunning facilities are among
Britain’s finest, but the community still transcends them. it is
value driven, happy, warm and ambitious. an oFSTeD
“outstanding” School which, according to the Good Schools
Guide, “inhabits the academic stratosphere”, Bromsgrove
achieves its sensational performance through adding value, not
by ruthless selection in the first place. yes, we have to be
selective, and – yes - we do come very high in the dreaded
league tables, but we will be looking less at rankings for 18 yearolds
than the performance of our fifty and sixty year olds.
We are broad: girls and boys, boarders and weekly boarders with
day pupils, a level and international Baccalaureate, British pupils
and internationals. But snobs, drones and those with a boorish
sense of entitlement need not apply, for we are part of a
community, not a walled bastion of privilege.
our size (we are 1,600 including our prep School) can, perhaps,
make Bromsgrove seem intimidating. The reality could not be
more different: Bromsgrove is the gentlest of giants.
if we may conclude where we began, with the Good Schools
Guide: “Bromsgrove produces engaged, friendly, unstuffy and
highly successful pupils.” We hope, if you visit, you will concur.
