Hot rolled steels are available as heavy plate and strip products. This publication provides the dimensions and
weight ranges for these products, along with some general information. The data has been arranged in tables
displaying thickness, width and length information for various commonly available yield strength classes. This
publication includes plate products in yield strength classes up to 500 MPa and sheet products up to 700 MPa.
For the dimensions and product information of high strength special steels, please visit our website at www.
• Steel product shapes
Both heavy plate and strip products are manufactured at Ruukki Metals’ works at Raahe: heavy plates on a
heavy plate rolling line, and strip products on the plant’s hot rolling line. Cut lengths and heavy plates are the
top sellers in our steel range.
Heavy plate products
• Heavy plates
• Shop primed heavy plates
Heavy plates (often referred to as “plates”) are available either with rolled surfaces (untreated) or shop-primed.
Additionally, we offer a wide range of prefabricated heavy plate products: wide flats, flat cut shapes, bent plates,
and precision cut plates with bevelled edge.
Strip products
• Coils
• Cut lengths
• Patterned cut lengths
• Patterned coils
• Slit strips
Cut lengths, slit strips and coils are available with rolled surfaces (untreated, black), or pickled. Patterned plates
(cut lengths and coils) are delivered with rolled surfaces. Patterned plates are often called floor plates.
• Steel grades
Steel products are determined not only by their shape, but also by their material, or steel grade. The available
materials for the products listed in this brochure include steels under Ruukki’s brand, and other steels corresponding
with various standards or rules of classification societies. There are several ways in which steels can
be grouped according to their intended application, for example:
General applications of steels
• Structural steels
• Steels for pressure purposes
• Shipbuilding steels
• Offshore steels
• Heavy plate products
Heavy plates are delivered hot-rolled, normalised rolled, and normalised in furnace, in thicknesses ranging from
4.7 to 150 mm. The thickness range for thermomechanically rolled steels is usually between 8 and 60 mm. The
available thickness range, especially the maximum thickness of a product, is limited by mechanical properties
and product approval requirements of the steel used. Therefore, the available thickness ranges for individual
steels must always be checked from our website.
Heavy plates
• The maximum weight of a single plate is approximately 12 tonnes.
• The maximum width is 3,300 mm.
• Depending on the thickness, the minimum width is either 1,901 mm or 2,000 mm.
• Deliveries in widths other than 1,000 to 1,900 mm and 1,000 to 1,999 mm must be agreed upon separately.
• Typical length is 2 to 15 m.
• The absolute minimum size for (cut) heavy plates is 1000 mm x 2000 mm, and must be agreed upon separately.
• An order position (position) is a lot consisting of plates with identical dimensions and in the same steel grade.
• At its smallest, a position can consist of a single plate with a minimum weight of 2,000 to 5,000 kg, depending
on its thickness.
• Generally, the combined length of individual plates in a single position should be at least 4,200 mm.
• In the case of thermomechanical steels thicker than 40 mm, the combined length must be at least 5.5 m.
Hot rolled, normalised rolled and normalised heavy plates
The highest yield strength class for these steel grades is R e ≤ 420 MPa. Table 3 displays the general dimensions
for heavy plates. The minimum and maximum dimensions for individual steel grades are absolute, even when
they fall within the general dimensions provided below.
• Strip products
Hot-rolled strip products include coils, cut length, slit strips, as well as patterned coils and patterned plates
(cut lengths). The weight range of the most basic hot rolled product, i.e. a single coil, is 10 to 30 tonnes. The
length range for cut lengths is 2 to 13 metres. The standard delivery condition for coils and cut lengths is with
mill edges included. Their maximum width is 1,860 mm. Slit strips are always delivered with trimmed edges in
widths ranging from 75 to 915 mm. Product deliveries in dimensions other than those provided below must be
agreed upon separately.
This brochure includes strip products in yield strength classes up to 700 MPa. Their available delivery conditions
include hot rolled, normalised rolled and thermomechanically rolled. Ruukki’s strongest and toughest strip
products are delivered quenched (hardened). The dimensional data for these steels is available on their individual
pages on our website.
For cut lengths, the length range is 2 to 12 metres. The maximum combined length, (12 to) 13 metres, must be agreed upon separately.
Product deliveries in dimensions other than those provided in the table must be agreed upon separately.
1) The maximum width of cut lengths with trimmed edges is approximately 30 to 40 mm smaller than that of cut lengths with mill edges.
1) For some steel grades, the maximum thicknesses of cut lengths delivered with trimmed edges may be smaller than those of delivered with
mill edges.
The maximum thickness of pickled cut lengths is smaller than that of rolled cut lengths (black).
The absolute maximum thickness for pickled cut lengths is 12 mm.
For some steel grades, the maximum width of cut lengths may be smaller than that of cut lengths with rolled surfaces (black).
The weights per width range for cut lengths
• For cut lengths with rolled surfaces, the weight per width ranges from 16 to 19 kg per 1 mm of width.
• For pickled cut lengths, width ≤ 1,250 mm, the recommended weight per width ranges from 16 to 19 kg per
1 mm of width.
• For pickled cut lengths with a width > 1,250 mm, the recommended weight per width ranges from 13 to 16 kg
per 1 mm of width.
• Deliveries with a lower weight per width must be agreed upon separately.
Maximum cut length weight deviation
• ±10%, but no less than -2 or +3 tonnes from the lot weight.
Cut lengths in special dimensions
We offer precision cut plates, or so-called small plates, in the 2 to 12 mm thickness range. The maximum length
for these special cut lengths is 3,000 mm and maximum width 1,800 mm. Both the width and the length of the
plate must be at least 21 times the thickness of the plate, or 75 mm.
Patterned plates in cut lengths and coils
We offer patterned plates (floor plates) both as cut lengths and coils. Patterned plates are often called floor
plates. The main benefit of patterned plates is that they provide improved traction and safety for walking surfaces.
Patterned plates are highly durable and have excellent bearing properties, and are suited both for indoor
and outdoor use. We offer three different patterns for our range of plates: two different tear patterns and a
chequer pattern. Table 8 displays the dimensions for patterned plates. Patterned plates are delivered with mill
edges, but are also available with trimmed edges upon separate agreement.
Table 8. Patterned plates (both cut lengths and coils) are delivered with mill edges and rolled surfaces.
The maximum width of patterned plates with trimmed edges is approximately 40 mm smaller than that of patterned plates with mill edges.
Coils with an inner diameter of 610 mm are also available upon separate request. Detailed product information
for our patterned plates and coils is available on our website.
Cut lengths and patterned cut lengths. Bundle sizes
Cut lengths and patterned cut lengths are always delivered in bundles to the customer. For cut length bundles,
the recommended lot size is the maximum weight of the bundle and its multiples, see Tables 9 and 10. A bundle
consists of cut lengths that have identical thicknesses, widths and lengths. The minimum lot size for cut lengths
is a single coil, or a number of cut lengths corresponding to a single coil.
