We are proud to be Celebrating Wales in our
Spring Season – its icons, culture and people.
In addition to hosting the inaugural St David
Awards, we explore the work of some of
Wales’ greatest artists – Dylan Thomas, Ivor
Novello and Richard Burton. Experiencing
Burton’s Hamlet in the theatre that bears his
name will be a very special occasion.
Our first co-production with Mid Wales Opera
of Handel’s Acis & Galatea promises to be
a highlight of the season and marks that
company’s Cardiff debut. We are also thrilled to
be hosting some of the finest musicians currently
working including the eminent Emerson String
Quartet, Ian Bostridge and from Russia,
Ensembles from the Mariinsky Orchestra.
It’s been a long held ambition to introduce a
regular comedy night here and I’m delighted
that Comedy at the College debuts in our
Students Union Bar in January. Be sure to
book early for our popular Seasonal Concerts
too, particularly Burns Night which was one
of our 2013 performance highlights and don’t
miss Eric and Little Ern, direct from London’s
West End.
Our own Richard Burton Company will
undertake a radical journey into the New,
performing newly commissioned plays from
young writers both here in Cardiff and in London.
Whatever your taste in comedy, music and
drama, we look forward to welcoming you.
Directed by Jamie Garven
By turns delightful and dark,
this landmark play was a
success when it was created
She meets some surprising
characters - not all of
Dissocia is the show for you.’
Harry Parr Davies was a
prolific song writer who
wrote for Gracie Fields,
George Formby, Jessie
have an evocative naive
Marguerite Monnot was
writing emotionally charged
songs for Edith Piaf. Monnot
Passionate, poetic and
heartbreakingly beautiful, the
music of Tudor composer
John Dowland has inspired
generations of British
composers. For the pioneering
viol consort Fretwork, this is
quite simply some of the
loveliest chamber music ever
written – and you’ll never hear
Dowland’s songs performed
with more piercing insight than
by the supreme living British
tenor, Ian Bostridge.
there’s definitely nowhere
Conductor Gareth Jones
virtuosity of both performer
Cymru’s celebration of Strauss’
150th Anniversary sets the
composer’s Metamorphosen
alongside his buoyant Le
Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
Written as an elegy to
the bombing of Munich
Metamorphosen is one of
Strauss’ most deeply heartfelt
works. In contrast, the
incidental music to a revision
of Moliere’s comedy, Le
displays Strauss’ colourful
orchestration and sense of
of Joseph Marx
Joseph Marx might just be
the finest 20th century
composer you’ve never heard
of – but singers in the know
treasure his beautiful, deeply
romantic songs. In this
magical recital, the
incomparable Christopher
Maltman rediscovers a whole
world of intimate feeling and
quiet rapture, placing Marx’s
songs alongside miniature
masterpieces by Korngold,
Mahler and Strauss. You’ll
never hear them sung better.
