Safety Advice
The MSA CONTROL E is a product used in activities supporting life and health!
This manual must be carefully read, understood and followed by all individuals who have or will have the responsibility
for selecting, using, servicing or maintaining this product.
This manual contains instructions for the optimal use of the product as well as important safety information.
Before use, the responsible persons have to decide in accordance with this manual, whether the product is suitable
for the intended application
Liability Information
The liability of MSA is voided if the product is not used appropriately and for the intended purpose. Choice and use
are the sole responsibility of the user.
Warranties also as guarantees made by MSA with respect to the product are voided if it is not used, serviced or
maintained in accordance with the instructions in this manual.
The above corresponds to the terms and conditions of sale regarding the warranty and liability of MSA. It does not
alter them.
Maintenance Advice
This product must be inspected and maintained in regular intervals by trained specialists, records must be kept.
For service and repairs original MSA spare must be used only. Modifications to the product or components thereof
are not permissible.
The liability of MSA extends exclusively to service and maintenance carried out by MSA .
1 Application
The MSA tally board MSA CONTROL E is a tool to increase safety. Information about which team is sent at
which time to which place under which respiratory protection is noted down, or the apparatus tags are attached
to the board, respectively. The extend of notes taken is subject to the fire brigade’s individual tactics.
These instructions only provide proposals.
2 Construction
The MSA CONTROL E consists of a rugged weather-resistant plastic housing containing 3 LED control
clocks, a radio-controlled real-time clock, a pen fastener with water resistant pen, an integrated inscription
field plus 2 transparent films for taking notes. A clamping bar holds the transparent films in place, a receptacle
to accommodate 9 apparatus tags is provided. A carrying handle is integrated in the housing, as well as 4
feedthrough´s for fixing the board.

3.1 Information About DCF-77 Radio-controlled Real-time Clocks (applicable for Germany only)
The Physikalische-Technische-Bundesanstalt Braunschweig (Physical-Technical-Institute of Germany) operates
a caesium-nuclide clock with a computed deviation of 1 second in 1 million years.
This time is encoded (DCF-77) and transmitted by a long wave radio transmitter in Mainflingen, Frankfurt/Main
with a range of 1,500 to 2,000 km, covering most of Europe.

Your radio-controlled clock receives and converts this signal and displays always the precise Central European
time, regardless of wintertime or daylight savings time.
Like any radio signal, the reception is depending heavily from location and position, normally however this is
unproblematic within 1,500 km around Frankfurt/Main.
The time signal is received on the hour. If reception is impossible, the receiver control (radio tower indication)
in the digital display is flashing. Reception failures may be caused by external interference from TV sets,
computer monitors, electric appliances, but also thunderstorms or generally poor receiving locations (reinforced
concrete buildings, metal window frames, tin roofs, etc.).
3.2 Out of Transmission Range
If the clock is out of the transmission range, it operates as quartz clock. If in this case the battery is removed
the clock is loosing the radio controlled time. Manual time setting is not possible.
3.3 Setting Daylight Savings Time – Wintertime
Setting from daylight savings time to wintertime or vice versa is automatically done within the transmission
range.
3.4 Receiver Control
The radio tower indication in the LCD-display flashes, if the last reception attempt failed. The reception attempt
is repeated hourly.

5 Battery Status and Replacement
5.1 One battery kit (5 ea. 1.5 V Mignon LR 6 2700 mA Fujitsu) has a service life of approx. 30 hours. Reduced
battery capacity is indicated by the flashing green control LED, still permitting operation of the tally board for
120 minutes. If the battery condition is low the display indicates ‘bat’.
Notice: restarting with deeply discharged batteries is impossible. The tally board switches off automatically
after the self-test.
5.2 To replace the batteries release the battery caps located on the right hand side with a coin or screwdriver.
Remove spent batteries and replace by fresh batteries of identical type. Take care to fit the batteries negative
pole first. Finally close battery caps again.
6 Using MSA CONTROL E
6.1 Before the mission under respiratory protection determine which electronic control clock is allocated to which
team. Every team member attaches his apparatus tag (and the key of his personal alarm unit, e.g. the MSA-
FireFly II S or the MSA-ICU-S) to the receptacle eyelets allocated to this control clock. By the colour of the
apparatus tag initial information is provided about the type of respiratory protection.
6.2 Use the Tally Board
Press the ON button to start the board. It automatically goes into self-test. The display is in the power saving
mode, each clock displays three red dots only. Fully charged batteries are indicated by the green control-
LED. By pressing the Start button above the individual LED control clock the pre-set period of 20 minutes is
indicated. Alternative periods of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 120 minutes can be selected by repeatedly
pressing the Start-button within 4 seconds.
Notice: The Start button is blocked if it is not pressed within 4 seconds to avoid inadvertent adjustment.
The clock counts down immediately displaying the remaining period in minutes. After expiry of one third and
two thirds of the set period, audible signals sound continuously; they can be silenced by pressing the appropriate
Start button. For greater accuracy the last minute is displayed in seconds.
Notice:
By pressing the Start-button for more than 4 seconds the ongoing countdown is aborted, the clock
returns into the power saving mode (3 red dots).
With the button the period of an ongoing mission can be increased in 1 minute intervals, with the button
the period can de decreased. The total period of one or several corrections is max. 19 minutes.
Notice: The maximum possible operating time is 120 minutes.
After termination of the selected period a horn generates a loud signal, the control clock displays a flashing
negative period (max. – 99 minutes). This indication gives a better estimation of a team’s overdue period.

Pressing the Start button once silences the horn. The flashing negative period continues to count.
Notice:
To terminate the ongoing counting, press Start button for 4 seconds, the clock switches off.
6.3 In addition to the team details, the general panels (Mission Sector, Officer in Charge, Information) are filled
in.
6.4 Important information received via radio is to be noted on the tally board.
6.5 Immediately upon termination of the mission, the team members take their apparatus tags (and keys of their
personal alarm units) and attach them to the pertinent appliances.
6.6 After the mission, data can be completed on the transparent films which can be filed as originals or as a copy
with the mission report.
Advice: To attach the keys of the MSA-FireFly II S (Part-No. D6002720) to the tally board we recommend
MSA key rings (Part-No. D5119004).
