Simple Ingenious Purling
Arm warmer, with knits and purls for wool of needle sizes
4-5, double looping, knitting loom M
1.
Slide the yarn from the top through the centre of the knitting loom.
Loop the yarn anticlockwise around peg 1L, then around pegs 1R, 2R,
3R, etc. The first looping round is finished when all pegs have been
looped twice and peg 1L three times.
1R
1L
To purl rows, carry the casting-off thread in front of the pegs. Place
the thread in front of peg 1R and loop around your left index finger.
Slide the cast-off needle through the stitch onto peg 1R. Now loop the
thread around the cast-off needle.
1R
1R
Once you have cast off the last knit row, each peg has one stitch left,
including peg 1L. Now loop the yarn around peg 1R and cast off using
a knit stitch. Take the cast-off needle and lift the cast-off stitch onto peg
1L. Cast off 1L.
1L
2.
1R
To cast off the knits using the cast-off needle, take up the bottom
stitches and lift each over the upper stitch and the peg. After casting
off, peg 1L has two stitches left, all other pegs have one stitch left. Now
alternate between casting off and looping a round.
1L
1R
Pull the thread through the stitch on peg 1R. Lift the new stitch over the
peg so that it has no stitches left.
1L
8.
1R
Lift the stitch on 1L back onto 1R. Now loop 2R, cast off using a knit
stitch and lift the stitch onto 1R. Cast off 1R and lift onto 2R. Continue
this way until all stitches have been cast off.
Once you have finished 15 knit rounds, change colours. Start by looping
the light yarn around 1R-1L. Do not cut the dark yarn, you will take it
up again later. As before, cast off the row using knit stitches. Take care:
Both the bottom stitches of peg 1L are lifted over the peg. Each peg
now has a light-coloured stitch.
Now lift the purl from the back onto the free peg. Purl a total of four
rows (R). Now take up the dark yarn. Continue the colour and pattern
change as follows: 4R knit; 1R knit, 3R purl; 11R knit; 1R knit, 10R purl;
4R knit; 1R knit, 5R purl; 4R knit; 1R knit, 3R purl; 8R knit.
Finally, sew up all the threads. To add a nice border, you can optionally
crochet around the arm warmer using picots or crab stitches.
