MINNESOTA IRONMAN® RIDE 2007
Winter is still showing its presence but
the Ironman Ride season is well
underway. We know that TCBC
members are out biking and training
for a grand spring and summer of
great riding. We hope you will kick-off
your cycling season by joining us on
the 2007 Ironman.
The 41st Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride
returns to Lakeville, MN on Sunday,
April 29th. We again offer routes of 30,
62 or 100 miles. It’s the Minnesota bike
season’s official kick-off and TCBC will
be there with an exhibit booth, loads
of riders, ride marshals, and many
volunteers. It’s the most serious bike
party of the year and we welcome your
participation.
Hostelling International-Minnesota
organizes and hosts the Ironman Ride.
TCBC serves as co-sponsor and
partner. You can even renew your
TCBC membership through your
Ironman registration. Last year 4,900
riders signed up and about 3,000 rode.
We ran into the wettest weekend of
2006 and that kept numbers down.
We deserve finer weather in 2007.
New this year we are offering free
registration for youth riders 17 years
and under. We want to encourage
youth participation in cycling with the
intent of getting them “hooked” like
you. We also have added Team
Registration this year. Bringing new
riders and increased fun to the event
seems to be our 2007 theme.
Details on both these changes are
found on our website at www.
IronmanBikeRide.org.
Park Tool USA is back as our title
sponsor. Having the world’s premier
manufacturer of bike tools
headquartered in our own backyard is
a treat. Park Tool staff will again
support the riders with their BOB
trailers in tow. And the Pioneer Press
has returned us as our media sponsor.
Our thanks to TCBC and its members
for your decades of Ironman support.
We’ll look forward to April 29 and
another memorable Minnesota
Ironman.
PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
IN BRIEF
Although it’s
bitterly cold as I
write this and
few of us are
riding outdoors,
the fact that
we’re in the
March
newsletter is
very encouraging, as is the
additional daylight each day, which
is quite noticeable. So, it’s a good
time to think about our bicycling
goals for the upcoming season and I
thought I’d take the liberty of
sharing my own goals with you.
Bicycling goals can be wide-ranging
and they don’t have to be hard. It
might be something like committing
to try out clipless pedals and cleats
for the first time or, at another
extreme, to tackle your first century
ride. Maybe your goal is to get
better on hills or to feel more
comfortable riding in groups. Or
perhaps you’d like to become a TCBC
ride leader and become more active
in other club activities. I know that
many of you have out-of-town tours
planned in various places, which
gives you a goal to strive for during
the season. There are even some
racers among us who have their eye
on certain events in the racing
calendar and may use TCBC rides for
training. For most of us, I think it’s
safe to say that our goal is to do
more riding if possible and to find
interesting new places to ride on a
variety of TCBC rides. Of course it
goes without saying that we all want
to stay safe and injury-free during
the season.
In the interest of helping me achieve
my own goals this year, I thought I’d
share them with you as I encourage
each of you to consider your own
targets. So, what is it that I have
planned this season? Well, I’m
signed up for something called the
“Elite Tour”, which is a
transcontinental tour run by PAC
Tour from June 10-26. You may recall
PAC Tour from my Alaska trip last
year or from the Ridge of the Rockies
tour that TCBC members John Pugh
and Scott Larson did a few summers
ago. PAC Tour specializes in long
distance tours, especially
transcontinental, and they provide
everything you need to keep you
riding -- mechanical support,
breakfast/snacks/lunch, basic motels
and best of all, they carry your gear.
It’s like the ultimate vacation where
all you have to do is ride, eat, and
sleep every day for a few weeks.
Except that the Elite Tour (the name
is a bit pompous) is kicked up a
notch or two. I think it will be the
greatest bicycling challenge that I’ve
ever attempted. Whereas a typical
PAC Tour might average 120-130
miles per day for 23-25 days, the Elite
will be 160-170 miles per day for 17
days (and no days off).
WINTER WEATHER: December
averaged 10 degrees above normal,
the sixth-warmest ever. 2006 was the
third warmest year in the Twin Cities in
more than 100 years. January
averaged 6 degrees above normal, and
total snowfall at the end of January
was a wimpy 10 inches, the least since
1981 that far into winter! February has
started out frigid....
LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS
SURVEY SHOWS: the “average”
League-affiliated bike club has 325
members who pay $17 a year to enjoy
a ride schedule of around 250 rides,
including one major ride with 600
participants. About 130 clubs, about
one-fifth of the total, took the survey.
Other findings: in total, about 300,000
people belong to LAB-affiliated clubs;
two-thirds of the clubs are
incorporated; annual budget of the
average club is around $40,000, with
largest expenses being insurance,
newsletter, and ride expenses; 40 per
cent are involved in advocacy, while a
third are involved in education
projects; most clubs sell merchandise,
most likely jerseys.
MIDTOWN GREENWAY NEWS:
There is a possibility streetcars could
someday run along parts of the
Greenway.... Construction of the cablestayed
bridge over Hiawatha Avenue
and the LRT tracks will hopefully be
done by this fall.... A new green space
area and gradual entrance ramp is
scheduled for construction this year at
10th Street....
BIKE TO WORK WEEK is May 14-18,
with Bike to Work Day on May 18.
BICYCLING MAGAZINE lists the 100
best local hill climbs for bikers in the
U.S., two for each state. For Minnesota
it lists: Chilkoot Hill in Stillwater, only
one-quarter mile long but 18%
average grade and 150 vertical feet
gained; and Garvin Heights in Winona,
1.25 miles, 9% average grade, 540
vertical feet. Wisconsin includes Blue
Mounds, 4 miles, 7%, 700 vertical feet.
OUR CLUB The Twin Cities
Bicycling Club (TCBC) is the Twin
Cities’ largest recreational cycling
club. We typically appeal to adult,
intermediate cyclists who like
group riding but don’t race. We
ride mostly on low-traffic roads
and use maps. We generally don’t
mark our routes or sag our rides.
Please use the ride key to choose
rides suited to your abilities.
HELMETS Must be properly worn
and fastened by everyone on all
TCBC rides and must be ANSI or
Snell-approved.
TOOLS Carry these on your bike:
tire levers, a pump, spare tube,
patch kit.
WATER You should drink water
before you ride, and carry water
with you on the ride, drinking
frequently.
AT THE RIDE START Arrive early
and allow time to get yourself
and your equipment ready, sign
the registration sheet, and (if you
are not a member) pay the leader
the trip fees. All bike trips list the
time the trip actually departs
from the start. There will be a
briefing by the leader.
DAY TRIP FEES NO CHARGE
for TCBC members & families,
$2.00 for non-members, $4.00
for each non-member family.
Pre-registration isn’t necessary
unless stated.
MOUNTAIN BIKE (MB) RIDES
Mountain bikes are required for
MB rides. Protective glasses are
highly recommended. MB rides
may require more protective
clothes. Muddy terrain may be
common. There will probably be
NO water available, so bring two
full bottles. Experienced TCBC
road riders new to mountain
biking should select MB rides at
least one Ride Type lower than
they normally ride “on-road.”
Additional rides are scheduled
on the web site. For updates visit
BIKE COLLECTORS
GETTING TOP-SHELF
PRICES FOR GOODS
Back when TVs had knobs instead of
remotes, the original Scooby-Doo
cartoon would’ve flickered on any
Saturday morning. Of course each
episode ended with the hog-tied
villain snarling about “those
meddling kids.”
John Barron isn’t bitter. He’s pretty
happy because he’s clear why he
sees a swelling interest and higher
prices for vintage bikes and parts.
“Seniors in high school and college
kids. There’s a lot of growing interest
by them. The reason is single-speed
and fixed-gear bikes have
experienced a huge resurgence
among that age group,” Barron says.
Barron owns and operates velostuf.
com. John’s site specializes in
vintage racing bicycles and
components. For more than 11
years, John has been traveling the
world dealing in the best bike parts.
One week he might be driving to
Denver; the next jetting off to Japan.
“Over lunch I bought an old crankset
for 400 bucks, a 50’s era crankset.
That crankset was worth 175 bucks a
couple years ago,” John says. “The
market is shrinking. These parts are
being put on bikes and used.”
Barron says it’s the new group of
interested young cyclists who are
gobbling up parts but they’re also
learning to appreciate them. “Old
School and retro is very popular
lately, so in bicycles it draws them
into the wonderful old vintage
racing bicycles. They’re interested in
the aesthetics and the utility from
high-end racing bikes from that
era,” he says.
Racing and touring bikes from preand
post-World War II will be on
display at the Antique Bicycle Show
at the Bicycling Travel & Fitness Expo
in Minneapolis in March. The show
will also feature high-wheelers,
penny farthings, and boneshakers
from the turn of the last century.
Last year, 122 antique bikes
competed for awards at the show.
Awards are given for each
manufacturing era. John Barron is a
collector as well as a seller.
“In the last six months I’ve sold two
bicycles for 9500 dollars (each), and
I’m negotiating the sale of two
others for ten thousand dollars
each,” John says. Barron says bike
collecting is an attractive hobby.
It’s a collectible the owner can
actually use to ride to the coffee
shop or to work. It’s a passion that
combines history, utility, and
aesthetics.
“The old handmade bicycles from
the era took craftsmen to build,”
Barron says. “Craftspeople are the
ones who built them by hand. They
cared and it’s reflected in the
aesthetics.” The tie-in to vintage is
single-speed, fixed-gear, and
lightweight racing bicycles that
have been the standard racing bikes
since the turn of the century. One
hundred years ago, the highest-paid
professional athlete in America rode
a fixed gear bicycle in a velodrome.
“It all started with Major Taylor,”
John says.
“There’s a lot of highly valued
collectibles that don’t have some of
those qualities. This market is way
undervalued and one day we’re
going to see values that are three,
four or five times the amount,” John
says.
John says here’s what’s hot: Fixed
gear track bikes from the 70’s. Italian
anything. Japanese stuff is way
undervalued. John says he just got a
bargain on a Sanrensho track bike
for a $1300.
“ You don’t have to spend a lot of
money to get one of the best racing
bicycles that money could buy,” he
says, “You could pick up a Peugeot
PX10 for a couple hundred bucks,
clean it up, and you’d have a bike
that was used by hundreds of pros
in the biggest races.” John’s velostuf.
com website is very popular in
Japan, and swap meets there are
big, often taking place on a public
green space. Collectors show up in
era-accurate bike racing attire and
scatter their wares on blankets.
“Japan is a huge market. There are
some extremely serious collectors in
Japan. I go there every year,” he
says, “Americans have six hobbies.
Japanese have one hobby and they
immerse themselves in it. They
become extraordinarily
knowledgeable and focus their
resources. I averaged sales of
between four and eight thousand
dollars in parts,” John says about his
last trip,“ they’ll pay 50 to 150
percent more. In October I sold a
saddle for 450 bucks, and on E-bay I
would’ve gotten two hundred
bucks.” By Rick Fuentes
LEADER TRAINING
If you’ve been thinking of becoming a
TCBC ride leader, here’s your
opportunity. Enrollment is now open
for this spring’s TCBC Leader Training
Course, which consists of one full day
of class on Saturday, April 14. Any
current member in good standing is
eligible to participate, as long as he/
she pays the fee, is willing to lead a
minimum of two rides by the end of
October this year for TCBC, and agrees
to abide by TCBC rules and customs.
The TCBC Leader Training Course
focuses on preparing candidates to
lead safe, lawful, fun, and interesting
rides. Subjects covered include how to
organize, plan, map, advertise, and
lead a bike ride for TCBC, plus a variety
of related subjects. Strong emphasis
will be placed on the rules of the road,
traffic laws, bicycle safety, and risk
management.
The total cost is $40, but it’s possible to
recoup the entire fee by leading four
rides for TCBC this season, which ends
on October 31, 2007. Leading three
rides will get you a $30 refund and two
rides $20, but that’s the smallest
refund offered. The refunds will be
made in November.
To register, send a check for $40 (made
out to TCBC) to: TCBC Leader Training,
PRESIDENTS’ COLUMN
Continued from p. 2
Right in the middle, there is a stretch
of 6 consecutive days of 175 miles or
more, including two double century
days back to back. The tour starts in
San Diego and ends at the beach
near Savannah, taking us across the
southern tier of the US.
Having ridden on parts of the route
before at a more relaxed pace, I
know that the toughest sections will
come in Oklahoma and Arkansas,
where the grades are steep, even
though the altitude isn’t very high. I
also know (or hope) that at that
point in the tour, I will have gotten
stronger and accustomed to the
daily routine.
It’s hard to explain why this sort of
thing interests me, but I guess I was
just seeking the next challenge and
this one will be a stretch. I certainly
don’t expect it to be easy, but one of
my goals is to figure out the right
combination of training rides so that
I won’t be suffering every day during
the tour. In spite of the long days, I
plan to be sure I’m always looking at
the wonderful scenery as we ride
across the country. After all, the
main point is to have fun and see the
country from my bicycle. In case
you’re wondering, the tour sold out
quickly to the maximum limit of 50
riders, which means I’ll be riding
with a good group of like-minded
fellow bicyclists. Fourteen dedicated
crew members will be assisting
along the way and they will even do
our laundry every couple of days,
which is unique to this tour.
Thank you for allowing me to share
my bicycling goal for 2007 with you
because I know that your support
will help me achieve it. I’ll do my
best to represent TCBC during the
tour. For anyone interested, you can
find more information about the
Elite Tour at pactour.com and there
will be several riders who plan to
post journals as we go across.
Meanwhile, as the 2007 season gets
started, I wish each of you the best of
luck as you try new bicycling
adventures big and small, many of
which TCBC can help you to fulfill. I
also hope your goals for the year will
include a deeper involvement with
your club by volunteering at an
event or helping out with some of
our club projects.
ANNUAL RECOGNITION
DINNER 2007
By Katie Angle
Once again the Twin Cities Bicycling
Club set aside time on January 19,
2007, to sit back and acknowledge,
applaud and award its faithful
members for their accomplishments
on and off the bicycle. This year’s
location at the Hillcrest Golf Club of
St. Paul, arranged by Kristine Poelzer,
provided a comfortable setting to
listen, talk and relax with fellow
riders. The social time was enhanced
by Scott Larson’s sellout of helmet
mirrors, in many colors with the TCBC
logo, at $10 each. After choosing our
seats, returning president and emcee
Charles Breer welcomed everyone,
recognized new members, and
thanked the Annual Dinner/
Recognition Committee of Kristine
Poelzer, Charles Breer, Mary Derks
and Lee Thielman for their detailed
and thorough efforts in planning the
evening. A choice of a delicious
chicken or vegetarian entree was
served with salad, potatoes and
alternating cakes of carrot, cheese or
chocolate. We then settled in to hear
about all the energy, time and
commitment that makes TCBC the
stellar volunteer organization it is
today with over 1,400 household
memberships, 1,400 rides, 100 active
ride leaders and 650,000 miles ridden
collectively over the past season.
Enthusiastic riders, dedicated
leaders, a busy scheduler, an accurate
statistician, an awesome website,
creative clothiers and good weather
created a win-win formula.
Ride Leaders who led four or more
rides received recognition and a
fleece jacket embroidered with the
TCBC logo and “Ride Leader” in their
choice of color and size. Ride Leaders
of the Year awards, which were
previously voted on by the general
membership, went to Herb Schultz,
Paul Huntington and Mary Derks for
Best Overall Ride Leaders, Deb
Matchinsky for Best New Ride Leader
and Herb Schultz for Best “C” Ride
Leader. Each received a certificate
and special embroidery on their
fleece jackets (their name and “Ride
Leader of the Year”) for their inspiring
modeling of excellent ride leading.
Paul Huntington also presented a
special bobblehead award to Herb
Schultz for his many years as a top
ride leader of many different rides.
Ride-related awards consisted of a
personally engraved medal with
name, mileage and number of rides
on them for members who rode 500
or more miles with TCBC. This year
the top ten male & female mileage
leaders were awarded a smaller
individual trophy. A new male
mileage leader emerged this year
after finishing second last year---Lee
to keep the wheels of this club
spinning and for supporting special
initiatives within the club. VIP
2006 WAS AGAIN THE BIGGEST
YEAR EVER FOR TCBC.
Most of our previous group records
were set in 2005, and all were
smashed last year. A total of 189
people biked over 1000 TCBC miles,
including 55 women. 88 people
over 2000 miles, 52 people over
3000 miles, and 26 people over
4000. All of these new records.
It was only in 2005 that we broke
1000 rides for the first time, and last
year we zoomed up to 1412 rides
that actually went. Each month set a
new record, and the 3 summer
months each topped 210 rides.
YEARS OVER 2000 MILES
Sue Blum has tied Eric Kuno’s record
of 12 years! Lee Thielman is tied for
second with 11 years.
YEARS OVER 3000 MILES
Sue Blum extended her record again
to 11 years. Tony Stifter is now alone
in second place with 9.
YEARS OVER 4000 MILES
Tony extended his record to 8 years.
Right behind him, alone in second
place, Mike Nizielski moved up to 7.
YEARS OVER 5000 MILES
Tony Stifter made over 5000 for his
fifth year, one behind Bob Dean’s alltime
record of 6.
DOING OVER 100 RIDES
31 people did that in 2006. Tony
Stifter has now gone over 100 rides
for 8 years, extending his all-time
record.
LEE THIELMAN rode 208 rides, the
fifth-highest men’s total ever, and
averaged 44 miles per ride, one of
the highest averages for a winner
in our history. His winning men’s
total of 9,188 miles was the fifthhighest
total ever, and he is now the
only person to go over 9000 miles
in two different years. He finished
second in 2005.
KATIE ANGLE led the women with
195 rides, the third-highest total
ever, and averaged 41 miles per ride.
She also had the third-highest
women’s mileage ever with 7,940
miles. This was Katie’s third straight
win – only one club biker had won
three mileage awards – Dave Carlson
in the 1980’s, not consecutive.
LEMOND BEFORE HELMETS BECAME MANDATORY
GREG LEMOND TO APPEAR AT BIKE EXPO
OUTSPOKEN RACER STILL
SPEAKS HIS MIND
Greg LeMond loves McDonald’s.
Contrary to the other American Tour
de France winner who was notorious
for weighing his food, LeMond admits
he was a pretty bad eater as a bike
racer. After one particularly grueling
Tour stage, he asked his team manager
to stop for a French-made American
burger. His request was probably met
with a routine eye roll, but that was
The Relaxed
Adventure Company
LeMond, and he was known for
bucking tradition. Twenty years after
becoming the first American to win
the Tour de France, Greg LeMond will
appear at the 2007 Bicycling-Travel &
Fitness Expo in Minneapolis.
LeMond wasn’t the first American to
ride the Tour. That honor went to
Jonathan Boyer, who even spoke
French with a Parisian accent. LeMond,
however, was the exuberant American
with the ready smile and a fiery spirit.
Legendary cycling coach Cyrile
Guimard saw the 19-year-old LeMond
up close at an amateur race in the
Brittany region of France. LeMond had
a mechanical with his team car
nowhere in sight. Frustrated, he threw
his bike and quit the race. Guimard is
quoted as saying, “I like his spirit.”
That spirit endures. It pushed him to
come back after a near-fatal hunting
accident. He still carries the buckshot
closest and most exciting Tour de
That spirit also proved to be
entrepreneurial. LeMond is credited
with pioneering aerobars, aero
helmets, and a system still known as
the “LeMond Formula” for fitting a
rider to a bike. He started his own bike
company with a unique design
dedicated to making the rider the
most comfortable in order to perform
their best.
His company has since been taken
over by Trek, but LeMond continues to
have a hand in design and promotion.
His completely new 2007 line of bikes
feature the “Min/Max” carbon fiber
design to give the rider the lightest
bike for their size. LeMond also
reinvented the stationary bike by
partnering with StairMaster. The
LeMond RevMaster is now in health
clubs all across the country, and
LeMond Fitness hosts coaching
sessions there as well.
LeMond is working for the Tour de
Diabetes Association, a spokesperson
position that should serve this
outspoken rider well. When asked
what he thought got him through
those tough French mountains,
LeMond replied, “Dairy Queen.”
STATE BICYCLE
ADVISORY
COMMITTEE
SEEKS
VOLUNTEERS
By Lisa Austin
I would like to share with you this call
for representatives on the State
Bicycle Advisory Committee.
Are you interested in promoting the
acceptance and use of bicycles in
Minnesota? The Minnesota
Department of Transportation is
seeking three volunteer citizen
representatives for the Metro District
serve on the State Bicycle Advisory
Committee.
The committee is comprised of
citizen representatives, agency
representatives and bicycle interest
representatives who strengthen and
encourage community support for
bicycling in Minnesota. In existence
since 1980, this advisory committee
continues to participate with
government agencies as an allied
partner to influence bicycle
legislation and advise on bicycle
issues. Meetings are held bi-monthly
and travel expenses are reimbursed.
To join SBAC you must be a
Minnesota resident and support
bicycling. For more information or to
apply for the vacancy visit http://
www.mnsbac.org for more
information. Applications are due
March 31, 2007.
I have served on the committee for
the past two years, and I can’t say
enough about what a great
experience it has been. The
committee has a strong impact on
bicycling issues in the state of
Minnesota. Some of the projects we
have recently worked on include:
● Helping to develop the Share the
Road materials
(www.sharetheroadmn.org),
● Reviewed the drivers training
materials.
● Helping with Bike to Work Day
activities throughout the state.
● Reviewed the bike design guide
manual that is used by engineers
and planners to design roads.
● Reviewed the State Bicycle
Modal plan.
● Advised the HHH Institute at the
U of M on some of the bicycle
related research projects.
In addition to these projects I have
had the honor to represent the
committee at the National Bike
Summit and the National Pro-Bike/
Pro-Walk, the Center for
Transportation Studies Forum on
Transportation, and the National
Rails-to-Trails.
It is important that bicyclists help
advise MnDOT and other state
agencies on issues concerning
bicyclists. If we want our needs to be
met and facilities to be built and
maintained for our use we need to
be a part of the planning process. In
addition to the citizen reps, some of
the other agencies that have
representatives on the committee
include the DNR, MetCouncil,
Department of Health, Department
of Education, Explore Minnesota
Tourism, and the Department of
Public Safety. Unlike any other
bicycle organization the SBAC has
the ears of the right people to help
us get our ideas and concerns heard
throughout the state.
Please feel free to call me if you want
to hear more about my experiences.
Also, look for the SBAC booth at the
Dear TCBC members: This is a
reminder that it’s time once again
to sign your yearly Release and
Waiver of Liability Form for TCBC.
Yearly signing of this form is
required by the insurance company
that provides our League of
American Bicyclists (LAB) liability
and supplemental medical
coverage for all TCBC members
when they participate in scheduled
TCBC bicycle rides. Our insurance
year runs from Feb. 1 through Jan.
31 of the following year.
Members need only sign one
waiver per year, unless they attend
a special event wherein all
participants must sign a waiver (i.e.
the Watermelon Ride). You can find
the waiver form on our website
under “Documents” (there are two
forms, make certain to use the one
for members), print it and mail it to
our P.O. Box. Alternatively, you can
sign one on your next TCBC ride
and give it to the leader. All leaders
should have the form available on
all rides.
Simply put, our LAB insurance
policy provides up to $1,000,000 of
liability coverage for our club, its
RAMSEY COUNTY is proposing
adding 44 miles of multi-use trails to
link with light rail. Objectives are to
increase commuting and recreation
options and get more motor vehicles
off the roads. They will seek $33 million
in federal funds this year. The trails
would connect with existing trails in
other metro area counties to create a
regional trail system. A bicycle facility
may be eventually built at the
downtown Union Depot, which may
become a regional transportation hub.
(TCBC President Charles Breer was
quoted in the STAR TRIBUNE article.)
A recent article reveals that
CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY officials
may sell a section of track along the St.
Croix River to Washington County for
use as a recreational trail. The old
section, which hasn’t been used for 15
years, runs three miles from about a
mile north of the Interstate 94 bridge
north to the northern end of Bayport.
a TCBC scheduled bicycle ride. It
also provides a $10,000
supplemental medical coverage
with a $500 deductible that kicks in
after your primary medical
insurance, if you have it, stops
paying for injuries incurred on a
plan is for a trail to go along the
river from Stillwater through the Afton
area south to Prescott and Hastings.
DNR TRAILS: With a new State
Legislature, and a projected budget
surplus for the first time in five years,
efforts will be made to increase
funding for state trails. The DNR state
trail budget is at an all-time low of $1.2
million, down from $3.9 million in
2000.
a new three-mile segment along the
southern side of the Mississippi River
will connect Crow Wing State Park to
the existing trail near Brainerd/Baxter
where the Hwy. 371 bridge crosses the
river. The Parks and Trails Council of
Minnesota made the final land
purchase recently. Three miles of
riverfront have been or will be added
to the park.
“NEW RIDERS WANTED”
I have belonged to the Twin Cities Bike
Club for a couple of years now. You
might think I have logged lots of miles
as a member, right? Wrong. Let’s see...
in 2002, I biked 20 miles doing 1 ride. In
2003, I biked 0 miles doing 0 rides
(ankle surgery), and in 2004, I biked 27
miles doing 1 ride. In 2005, I biked 0
miles doing 0 rides. But, in 2006, I biked
over 1000 miles riding in 39 club rides.
What changed this year? My approach
changed. I figured out how to enjoy
riding with the club.
Below is my experience. I hope some or
all of these comments will inspire you
to hang in there and keep pedaling.
Take your bike to your local bike
1 store. Let them give it the onceover.
(If you are looking for a tune-up in
the spring, get it in early. It can be a two
week wait at some shops.) Have one of
the people there make sure your bike is
fitted to you properly. Get a helmet,
cycling gloves, a couple of water
bottles, a small seat bag, some bike
shorts, and a couple of spare tubes and
a patch kit.
As soon as the snow melts and the
2 temperatures are warm enough
for you personally, start riding your bike
around town. Get a few miles in so you
can get over the huffing and puffing up
little hills while you are alone. Trust me,
it makes a big difference.
3
Start slow. Try a “C” ride first and
then work your way up. Some
people will find the “C” rides too slow
and will jump right up to “B” rides or
faster. But, for me, a “C” ride was the
perfect place to start. I met some really
nice people, of all ages, who inspired
me and made me excited to be in the
club and on my bike. No one gets
dropped. If need be, the ride leaders
stop at points to let everyone catch up.
(NOTE: this was the mistake I had make
in previous years. I overestimated my
abilities, and tried a ride that was
actually above my pace. The people
were nice, but I was on the wrong ride. I
kept up for the first 10 miles, but I was
wiped by the rest stop. I ended up
struggling to finish. I got discouraged
and quit riding for the year.)
Next up, I set a goal of 500 miles
4 with TCBC. I certainly thought this
was attainable. I was already almost
halfway there by July.
Keep a Ride Log. This will allow
5 you to see what ride leaders you
like to ride with, track your mileage, and
can also serve as a way to verify your
ride mileage with the club at the end of
the riding season.
6
I found a cycling buddy. Debi and
I hit it off right away when we
struggled and ended up encouraging
each other up a big hill on a ride one
Wednesday night. From that moment
on, we rode virtually every TCBC ride
together. We shared in the misery on
hills, encouraged, and congratulated
each other after every ride. Make
friends with your fellow riders. It makes
the rides a lot more fun.
7
Find a ride leader you like and go
on their rides until you are ready
to branch out and try other rides. I
rode on rides with 15 different leaders
over the past biking season. I was
fortunate to have met some really
great ride leaders this past year. Find
someone who rides your speed and
shares your thoughts about what
biking means to you.
Two ride leaders in particular kept me
riding in the club. The first one waited
for me when I got dropped on a ride
early in the year. She wasn’t even
leading the ride, just riding it, but she
waited for me when the back ride
leader dropped me. If it hadn’t been
for her, I might have quit the group at
that point.
The second one I met by going on one
of his rides in June. He is a
conscientious leader and is always
looking out for the riders on his rides.
He carries virtually every tool and extra
tubes with him so he is prepared for
any problems that may come along. He
stops and offers help to others if they
have a problem with their bike. Now,
looking at my riding log, I rode 23 rides
with him this past biking season.
8
Celebrate your accomplishments.
Be proud of yourself for reaching
the goal or going beyond it. I hoped for
500 miles and I ended up riding 1000
miles. Friends took me out to dinner to
celebrate my 1000th mile.
9
Attend the Annual Membership
Meeting. It will inspire you and
excite you about being a member of
TCBC. Get involved.
10
And finally, look forward to
next season. If you are able,
consider winter riding or hitting the
gym to keep some of the conditioning
you worked so hard to get.
What’s up for me this new season?
A higher mileage goal, becoming a ride
leader, and getting more involved.
Happy riding!
Heal Faster & Ride Better
Thai Yoga Massage is an age-old practice that has been a cultural staple
in Thailand for over 2,500 years. It is not only a form of relaxation but more
importantly a medical practice that aids in the treatment of ailments and
illnesses as well.
What is Thai Yoga Massage?
Thai Yoga Massage uses a non-toxic natural healing method that is good
for your health and leaves no side effects. The health benefits are many,
more so than other types of massage since the focus is on balancing
energy lines and blood flow in the body by working the tendons. In a Thai
Yoga Massage session, Orn applies pressure to your body, by pulling and
stretching, encouraging better blood flow. She uses her thumbs, fingers,
forearms, palms, elbows, knees and feet to complete the process or
movement. The techniques used are facial stretching, joint mobilization,
acupressure, energy balancing, and rhythmic deep tissue manipulation,
assisted yoga positions and meditation.
What Thai Yoga Massage can do for you
The trademark of Thai Yoga Massage is the soothing, meditative rocking
motion. In one session, the clients’ joints will be opened, muscles and
tendons will be stretched, internal organs toned and vitality increased. The
client will experience a deep relaxation facilitated by a balanced nervous
system as well as an overall feeling of rejuvenation and well being.
Day to day stress along with diet choices and physical activity levels all help
determine your movement and flexibility. Throughout your day, toxins can
build up in your system, toxins that rob you of energy and have you feeling
weary or ill. The Thai Yoga Massage is the natural way to cleaning inside
the body and brings balance to your body.
Using pressure-point therapy along the tendons releases toxins that build
up inside your body. The assisted yoga poses helps increase flexibility and
joint mobility, a natural way to make you stay young and improve your health.
Orn recommends her clients do Thai Yoga Massage for two-hour sessions
because the body needs this time to warm the muscles, tendons and
connective tissues. She then utilizes the full body hold technique more than
one time in one area to encourage better circulation by delivering more
blood and oxygen, which initiates the healing and balance process.
What’s my client said:
“Thai Yoga massage is a completely different experience from a typical
massage. The stretching of my body and the deep massage of my
muscles was unbelievable,” – Darren “Orn really knows what she is doing
and took great care in making sure I was comfortable and relaxed.”
“I have had many massages and this is by far the best massage I ever
had. It’s help my neck movement, knee swelling, hip pain, sleeping better
and longer. This massage more effective and lasts longer than any
chiropractic adjustment.” - Carol
“After a Thai Yoga Massage, I have additional energy and feel that any
tension in my body is diminished,” – Karen
“I healed faster from knee injury.
The doctor said (6-8 weeks to
heal) but with Orn’s help, recovery
took only 4 weeks. - Dan
“Now not only am now I without
pain, but Orn shown me ways to
take care of myself to keep the
pain away. - Steve
Sunday (June 1 and 3, respectively.)
TOL is sponsored by the Paul Bunyan
Cyclists and offers mileage options of
approx 40 and 70. It is known for its
varied and plentiful rest stops---think
“rolling buffet”! As a general rule, we
try to ride together as a group for a
portion of the ride as it’s a lot of fun to
be part of the long train of TCBC
cyclists rolling down the road, all in our
The format of this year’s trip will be
very similar to that of the past two
years in that we will stay in cabins, do
MARK YOUR CALENDARS. The
Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride is
Sunday, April 29th, in Lakeville for its
ninth year. The 2007 IRONMAN
brochures arrived in riders’ homes
long ago and we’re preparing for
another grand ride. Already cyclists are
gearing up for the official beginning of
spring...the IRONMAN Ride!
As is true with an event of this
magnitude, hundreds of volunteers
help ensure the success of the
IRONMAN each year. Once again, WE
NEED YOU! If you are a returning
volunteer, share the fun by recruiting
some friends or family members. If you
are new to the IRONMAN, we are ready
to welcome you. The IRONMAN makes
a great service project for church
groups, scout troops, and families too.
We strive to provide a fun event for
riders and non-riders alike. Following
is just a sampling of the many
volunteer opportunities available:
REGISTRATION PROCESSING: Join
the group on Monday evenings after
5:00 PM to help process rider
registrations. The location is the HI-MN
office, 622 Selby Ave. St. Paul. These
“work parties” (actually fun social
occasions) will continue until the week
of April 16. Bring a friend. No
experience necessary. We can train
anyone. Call the HI-MN office at 651-
251-1495 for details.
RIDER PACKET STUFFING PARTY:
Come anytime after 5 PM on
WEDNESDAY, April 25, to Hope
Lutheran Church, 5728 Cedar Ave (the
usual site, in south Minneapolis near
Lake Nokomis) and join a jolly bunch
of volunteers strolling along the tables
and ‘stuffing’ 5000 rider packets. Bring
your own ‘rubber finger’. Food,
beverages, and hospitality will be
provided at this social event.
SATURDAY SETUP: April 28 is a big
volunteer work day in Lakeville,
starting at 8:30 AM at Lakeville High
School. We have registration tables to
set up, merchandise to sort and fold
and bag for each registrant,
merchandise tables to set up, supplies
to pick up and deliver, etc. REST STOP
SETUP: Starting between 1 and 2 PM,
we need lots of help as we set up the
rest stops. There are hundreds of
PART ONE: THE BLUE DUNELT
The history of the Jelloman Bicycle
Ride begins with the relic, Bert, and
his blue, 42-pound, 10-speed, Dunelt
racing bicycle. Now back in the day,
many bicycles were called racing
bicycles, but Bert actually did race
the Blue Dunelt – once. Recruited
from the audience of a race he had
come to watch, chosen for his 10-
speed racing bicycle, Bert did quite
well. As a matter of fact, he was neck
and neck with the winner of the race
until just a few seconds after the
starting gun, and several times more
as the laps of the race progressed.
His only downfall was when he
stopped to take a break, the race was
over before he could finish his
cigarette. That was unfortunate,
because to some it looked like Bert
had quit, when in fact, he fully
intended to resume racing just as
soon as he got rested and finished
his smoke. Anyway, in spite of such
early success, Bert decided to retire
from racing. He found himself
thinking to replace the Blue Dunelt,
even though it seemed to have been
By Mary Derks
As many of you may already
know from the article that
appeared in the Jan/Feb TCBC
newsletter and other
communications, TCBC and HI
(Hostelling International) will be
partnering to develop a new
edition of the Minnesota bike
atlas. To help ensure the atlas
meets the needs of the biking
constructed with an eye toward its
own permanent existence.
On the last Saturday of April in 1981,
Bert was traveling as a passenger in
the motorcar of his friend Bob. When
Bert mentioned his concern
regarding the future of the Blue
Dunelt, he was immediately taken to
Penn Cycle. There, his eye was drawn
to a certain bicycle, of which he said,
“If I were to get a new bike, this is the
one I would get.” The salesman said
that the bicycle was just right for
Bert too, and that it was also just
right for the IRONMAN Ride coming
up the next day.
Bob could see that Bert was trying
very hard to think about what he
should do. He also knew that it was
not his place to influence Bert’s
decision in any way. Knowing these
things, Bob left the store, got into his
motorcar, and drove away. He left
Bert in the store to make up his own
mind – take the long walk home or
buy a new bicycle and ride home in
style. And so it was that Bert.... (Tune
in next month to find out what Bert
did.) By Bob Brown
SCOTT LARSON AND LISA AUSTIN UTILIZING OUR TCBC MIRRORS
PHOTOS BY MARY DERKS
TCBC HELMET
MIRRORS FOR SALE!
AS EFFECTIVE CYCLISTS, we should
all be utilizing a rearview mirror of
some sort for safe cycling and to
increase awareness of our
surroundings. In an effort to
emphasize this important safety
aspect, TCBC has offered one style of
mirror (the UltraLight Rearview Mirror)
for sale at the Annual Recognition
Dinner and, due to selling all 100 that
were available, will be offering
additional mirrors for sale online and
possibly at upcoming events. The
mirrors are helmet-mounted, 1.5” in
diameter, contain the TCBC logo on
the back and are made out of recycled
materials including wheel spokes, of all
things. Furthermore, it just so
happens that this is the same style
mirror that Charles Breer, TCBC’s
president, uses (as does Lisa Austin,
Jim Joy, Scott Larson and myself). So if
you are familiar with our mirrors, you’ll
know the style I’m talking about. The
mirrors are available in a variety of
colors---surely one to match your
helmet, bike, etc.---and cost only $10!
SOME ADVANTAGES OF THIS
MIRROR ARE:
● Fits helmets so firmly that it can
actually be used as a handle to
carry your helmet!
● No more forgetting it. Once
attached, always attached, resulting
in one less thing to “find” when
getting ready for a ride.
● Mirror swivels to offer optimal
viewing.
● Large viewing area without
obstructing your view.
● Contains TCBC logo and available
in a variety of colors!
● You’ve got the jersey and the socks,
so why not get the mirror too!
● A “green” product.
Thanks to Scott Larson for helping
with this project, especially for making
many of the TCBC logos that are on the
backs of the mirrors and for selling the
mirrors at the Annual Recognition
Dinner. By Mary Derks
