Another attractive feature of
Saskatchewan is its abundant and
healthy wildlife population. If you’d like
to see burrowing owls, sage grouse,
black-footed ferrets, elk and whitetailed
deer, just to name a few, head
for southern Saskatchewan – and don’t
forget your camera!
If your idea of fun involves something
more active than bird or wildlife
watching, perhaps golf is your thing.
Southern Saskatchewan boasts more
than 80 excellent golf courses
designed to please all levels of
enthusiasts.
Challenge your golf skills at Long Creek
Golf and Country Club, set into a valley
east of Avonlea, or take a swing at the
9-hole course at Katepwa Beach Golf
Club, and enjoy the stunning beauty of
the Qu’Appelle Valley.
Active outdoor experiences are
everywhere in the southern part of
Saskatchewan! Check out spots for
biking, hiking, windsurfing, watersliding,
horseback riding, and kiteboarding.
Join in a game of paintball, experience
a climbing wall, try out a slackline, or fly
through the treetops on a zipline. These
are only a few of the wide variety of
activities available to provide new and
exciting experiences for visitors and
residents alike.
And in several parts of the province,
you can enjoy numerous winter
outdoor experiences, such as
wintertubing, snowboarding, cross
country or downhill skiing, or sleigh
rides – all part of the winter fun in
Saskatchewan!
Festivals and special events often linger
in the memories for a long time after
the vacation is over. Who could forget
the “Dickens Village Festival”, held in
Carlyle the first weekend of every
December, when the townspeople
recreate quaint Victorian England?
A definite high point in Moose Jaw’s
year is the “Festival of Words” in July,
attracting hundreds of writers and
literature lovers of all genres. The
communities of Consul, Robsart and
Eastend have joined forces to present
the 3-day “South West Quest for Art &
History”, (July 20-22, 2012) which
includes a self-guided tour to meet
artists, view their art, experience music,
history, films from the Yorkton Film
Festival, a parade and fireworks
(including your own hand-crafted
luminary!)
Traditional western prairie festival and
event fare includes a variety of rodeos,
both professional and neighborhood,
like the “Reno Rodeo” in Consul, or the
“Long Creek CCA Rodeo” in Radville.
This part of the Canadian west is an
unforgettable treasure trove for anyone
who is interested in, or fascinated by,
any or all kinds of culture and history.
