NURS 420. Research Utilization 2 credits<br />

This course is designed to build on previous<br />

learning about the basic components of the<br />

research process. The course analyzes the<br />

research process and focuses on critique and utilization<br />

of nursing research. The use of critical<br />

thinking skills enable the student to read, analyze,<br />

critique, and apply nursing research findings<br />

to clinical practice. Health services research, collaborative<br />

inquiry, and outcomes research will<br />

also be explored. Prerequisite: NURS 400.<br />

WI-NURS 430. Nursing the Older Adult 2 credits<br />

This course is a comprehensive overview of issues<br />

related to older adults. Throughout the course<br />

there is emphasis on nursing diagnoses and interventions<br />

that are age and culturally appropriate.<br />

Interventions at all levels of prevention are presented<br />

to emphasize the importance of wellness<br />

and health promotion, as well as detection and<br />

treatment of disease, in the care of older adults.<br />

Prerequisites: NURS 300, 355. Department of<br />

Nursing approval required for non-majors.<br />

NURS 450. National & International<br />

Nursing Perspectives<br />

2 credits<br />

National and International Nursing is designed to<br />

broaden the learner’s view about nurses, nursing<br />

and health issues. The course explores the role,<br />

function and impact of major national and international<br />

nursing organizations on the development<br />

of nursing. The relationship of the respective<br />

local and state nursing organizations to their<br />

parent organizations also will be explored.<br />

Selected issues that impact health at the national<br />

and international levels are identified. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

will develop a project that utilizes knowledge of<br />

political realities and cultural competence.<br />

Prerequisite: Department permission.<br />

NURS 460. Clinical<br />

Practice II<br />

8 credits/4 credits RN<br />

This course is the culminating clinical experience<br />

that provides students with opportunities to synthesize<br />

knowledge, skills, and values previously<br />

learned in nursing and general curricula in caring<br />

for individuals and families across the life span<br />

and in a variety of settings. In this final clinical<br />

experience, students give evidence of mastering<br />

the skills related to: communication; critical<br />

thinking; decision-making; and management to<br />

plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive<br />

nursing care for individuals and families. In addition,<br />

students’ clinical performances reflect<br />

accountability, responsibility, and evidence of<br />

one’s value system for nursing practice and lifelong<br />

learning. Prerequisites: NURS 400, 410, 430<br />

and 420.<br />

NURS 470. Nursing Management 2 credits<br />

This course is built on the assumption that leading<br />

and managing is an integral part of professional<br />

nursing practice, either at the point of care<br />

or in a management position. The course provides<br />

an overview of concepts relevant to contemporary<br />

leadership and management practices<br />

as well as principles related to managing the<br />

healthcare organization, its resources, the people<br />

comprising the nursing team, consumer relationships,<br />

and professional and personal resources.<br />

Prerequisite: NURS 400.<br />

NURS 480. Professional Trends<br />

and Issues<br />

2 credits<br />

This course, as the final course in the baccalaureate-nursing<br />

curriculum, stimulates students to<br />

analyze and evaluate a variety of trends and<br />

issues related to concepts and topics introduced<br />

in previous courses and to study the impact of<br />

these trends and issues on contemporary nursing<br />

practice. Concepts, topics, trends, and issues<br />

related to economic, political, social, cultural and<br />

professional aspects of health care delivery as<br />

well as history and development of nursing as a<br />

profession, legal and ethical accountability, and<br />

roles in developing a career in nursing and growing<br />

professionally will be studied. Prerequisite:<br />

NURS 400.<br />
