Learning Process<br />

This course studies how students learn with<br />

emphasis on current theories of learning, the relationship<br />

between learning and development, the<br />

characteristics of learners, and effective methods<br />

for measuring learning. The goal of the course is<br />

to enhance teacher’s efforts to improve student<br />

learning. Course offered: Summer. Prerequisite:<br />

EDLS 610. Curriculum Planning and<br />

Development<br />

3 credits<br />

This course offers an in-depth study of curriculum<br />

development and instructional strategies.<br />

Educational practices will be examined in the<br />

light of current research as to its applicability in<br />

today’s schools. An integrated approach to<br />

instruction will be modeled, and students will<br />

work together in a collaborative approach to curriculum<br />

development. <strong>St</strong>udents will develop competencies)<br />

in how to be a change agent in the<br />

area of curriculum. Course offered: Fall.<br />

EDLS 620. Principal as Instructional<br />

Leader<br />

3 credits<br />

The objectives for this course are to prepare<br />

prospective principals in the areas of instructional<br />

leadership, decision-making and problem solving,<br />

school improvement, building management, and<br />

basic personnel and program management. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

will approach these issues from the perspective<br />

of a secondary, middle school, and/or<br />

elementary principal. Course requires the student<br />

to participate in research. <strong>St</strong>udents will engage in<br />

intellectual interaction between the instructor,<br />

mentor, and other students for the purpose of<br />

sharing ideas and research findings Course<br />

EDLS 625. School Improvement and<br />

Organizational Development<br />

3 credits<br />

This course provides students with extensive<br />

study of school organization, correlates of effective<br />

schools, and develops leadership skills which<br />

can effect meaningful change. <strong>St</strong>udents complete<br />

a self-assessment of their school, develop a school<br />

improvement plan, and participate in case studies,<br />

in-basket exercises, and simulations. Course<br />

offered: Spring. Prerequisite: Graduate status.<br />

EDLS 630. Essentials in School Law, Finance,<br />

and Buildings<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to prepare future building<br />

level administrators by studying laws and current<br />

legislation affecting public and private schools. It<br />

will also view school revenue sources, expenditure<br />

practices and management responsibilities as<br />

they relate to the building budget. Finally, students<br />

will examine problems in building planning<br />

and plant utilization. Course offered: Summer.<br />

Prerequisite: Graduate status.<br />

EDLS 635. School and Community 3 credits<br />

An intensive examination of the school and its<br />

environment. Major emphasis is on the linking<br />

mechanisms utilized by the school in interaction<br />

with internal and external publics. Course<br />

Administration of Catholic Education<br />

and Special Programs<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to develop an understanding<br />

of and an appreciation for the administrative<br />

challenges in Catholic schools. Emphasis will also<br />

be placed on the administration of special programs.<br />
