Graduate Curricula<br />

Master of Education in Special Education<br />

The Master of Education in Special Education<br />

program is designed to provide skills at the graduate<br />

level to teach in the fields of learning disabilities,<br />

behavioral disorders, mental disabilities, or<br />

mild disabilities. Additional course work leading<br />

toward endorsement as a Special Education<br />

Consultant can also be obtained.<br />

The Master of Education in Special Education<br />

is a 45-51 semester credit professional degree<br />

program integrating 29-35 semester hours of<br />

endorsement credits with 16 semester hours of a<br />

graduate core. <strong>St</strong>udents wishing a master’s degree<br />

would apply to the graduate program upon completion<br />

of their endorsement program. All graduate<br />

level course work (500 level or above) from<br />

the endorsement program would transfer into the<br />

graduate program providing it carries a grade of<br />

“B” or above.<br />

Master of Education Postsecondary Disability<br />

Services<br />

The Master of Education in Postsecondary<br />

Disability Services program is a 39 semester hour<br />

professional degree program built on the philosophy<br />

that special services for individuals with disabilities<br />

should not stop at high school level, but<br />

should be available at the university/community<br />

college and adult service level.<br />

This program has two options. The<br />

college/university option is designed for those<br />

wising to pursue careers in disability services at<br />

the community college or four-year college or<br />

university level. The community agency option<br />

focuses on providing training for individuals<br />

wishing to pursue a career in community services<br />

providing assistance to developmentally disabled<br />

adults.<br />

Admissions Policy<br />

Admission to the graduate programs in education<br />

consists of the following procedures:<br />

1. Completion of Graduate Programs<br />

Application including a $25 application fee<br />

(application fee is subject to change).<br />

Application must be submitted to the<br />

Graduate Special Education office.<br />

2. Submission of two (2) current letters of reference<br />

using the Graduate Special Education<br />

programs reference forms. All letters must be<br />

received before a decision on acceptance will<br />

be made.<br />

3. Submission of all previous official college and<br />

university transcripts to the Graduate Special<br />

Education office. (Official is defined as transcripts<br />

sent directly from the college/university<br />

with an official seal affixed). All transcripts<br />

must be received before a decision of acceptance<br />

will be made.<br />

4. Submission of Graduate Record Exam or<br />

Miller Analogies Test Scores to the Graduate<br />

Special Education program office (for M.Ed.<br />

programs only).<br />

5. <strong>St</strong>udents may register as a special student for<br />

the term immediately proceeding their application<br />

should the above materials not be available.<br />

However, acceptance into the graduate<br />

programs must be achieved before registration<br />

for the second term.<br />

6. Admission into one of the three graduate education<br />

programs is based on criteria specific to<br />

each program.<br />

Admission Requirements for Special Education<br />

Endorsement Program<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents wishing to enroll in the special education<br />

endorsement program must meet the following<br />

requirements:<br />

1. Hold junior level status (completion of 60<br />

hours of credit).<br />

2. Obtain a positive recommendation from education<br />

advisor and one member of the special<br />

education program.<br />

3. Possess an overall GPA of 3.0 or above.<br />

In order to continue in the special education<br />

endorsement program, students must maintain a<br />

GPA of 3.0 in all education and special education<br />

course work.<br />
