SPED 499. <strong>St</strong>udent Teaching in Learning<br />

Disabilities (Secondary)<br />

12–15 credits<br />

Direct observation and supervised teaching experience.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents must spend a full day, five days<br />

per week for a semester, with adolescents with<br />

learning disabilities. <strong>St</strong>udents enrolled in this<br />

course will be expected to meet all the obligations<br />

set forth in the Special Education <strong>St</strong>udent<br />

Teaching Handbook.<br />

SPED 530. Introduction to<br />

Behavioral Disorders<br />

3 credits<br />

Focuses on the causes, characteristics, diagnosis,<br />

and treatment of children with behavioral disorders.<br />

Emphasis is placed on the educational,<br />

social, and personal interactions of students with<br />

mild and moderate behavior disorders.<br />

Prerequisite: SPED 210 or equivalent.<br />

SPED 550. Introduction to Multicategorical<br />

Special Education Programming 3 credits<br />

Provides an introduction to children and youth<br />

with mild special needs and a framework for<br />

understanding special education needs from a<br />

multicategorical perspective. Prerequisite: SPED<br />

210 or equivalent.<br />

SPED 593. Teaching Infants and Young Children<br />

with Severe/Profound Disabilities 3 credits<br />

This course addresses teaching methodology as it<br />

applies to infants and young children with serious<br />

disabilities. Various issues relating to working<br />

with youngsters with severe/profound and<br />

multiple disabilities are addressed through lecture<br />

discussion and practice of skills. Such issues as<br />

medical care, technology for department children,<br />

community, state, and regional resources, support<br />

groups, service delivery systems for early<br />

development as well as specific teaching methods<br />

in the areas of motor, social, self-help, cognitive<br />

and behavior will be addressed.<br />

SPED 521/621. Teaching the Elementary<br />

Learning Disabled Child<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to provide an in-depth<br />

exploration of specific strategies used with teaching<br />

elementary level learning disabled youngsters.<br />

Teachers will develop skills for working with the<br />

learning disabled child in areas of reading mathematics,<br />

spelling, handwriting, social skills and<br />

thinking skills. Field hours required. Prerequisite:<br />

SPED 511, 520 or permission of instructor.<br />

SPED 522/622. Teaching Secondary Learning<br />

Disabled <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

3 credits<br />

Designed to develop skills in teachers working<br />

with learning disabled adolescents, this course<br />

will focus on in-depth study in the areas specific<br />

to the needs of secondary level students. Field<br />

hours required. Prerequisites: SPED511, 520 or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />

SPED 623. Neurological Aspects of Learning<br />

Disabilities<br />

3 credits<br />

Focus on the various neurological components<br />

involved in the learning process. <strong>St</strong>udents will<br />

learn the operation of the brain and how it<br />

impacts learning. Prerequisites: SPED 210 or<br />

equivalent; SPED 520.<br />

SPED 628. Practicum in Learning Disabilities<br />

(Elementary)<br />

3 credits<br />

This course provides students with field experiences<br />

working in elementary programs for students<br />

with learning disabilities. <strong>St</strong>udents will gain<br />

first hand practical experience in working with<br />

curriculum and teaching strategies under the<br />

supervision and guidance of licensed teachers.<br />

Prerequisites: SPED 510, 511, 514 520, 621, and<br />

teacher certification.<br />

SPED 629. Practicum in Learning Disabilities<br />

(Secondary)<br />

3 credits<br />

This course provides students with field experiences<br />

working in secondary programs for students<br />

with learning disabilities. <strong>St</strong>udents will gain<br />

first hand, practical experience in working with<br />

curriculum and teaching strategies under the<br />
