SPED 689. Practicum in Multicategorical Special<br />

Class with Integration-Secondary (SCI) 3 credits<br />

This course provides students with field experience<br />

working in secondary programs for students<br />

in multicategorical SCI settings. <strong>St</strong>udents will<br />

obtain practical first-hand experience of working<br />

with curriculum and teaching strategies.<br />

Prerequisites: SPED 210 or equivalent, SPED<br />

510, 511, 514, 621, 631, 641, teacher certification<br />

or permission of instructor. “In progress”<br />

grade option available for this course.<br />

SPED 700. Research Project<br />

3 credits<br />

This course focuses on conducting independent<br />

research with an emphasis on action or classroom<br />

based methodology. <strong>St</strong>udents must conduct<br />

research project and report their findings through<br />

a written document that meets the department<br />

guidelines. An oral presentation of this research<br />

must be presented to the university at large.<br />

Prerequisites: Completion of 90% of required<br />

course work, EDUC 710, 711.<br />

SPED 713. Legal Aspects of<br />

Special Education<br />

2 credits<br />

This course explores the legislative and litigative<br />

reforms of Special Education. Special Education<br />

law including The Individuals with Disabilities<br />

Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Vocational<br />

Rehabilitation Act will be addressed along with<br />

recent court decisions relative to these laws.<br />

Prerequisite: Graduate status.<br />

SPED 715. Individual <strong>St</strong>udy in<br />

Special Education<br />

1–3 credits<br />

This course offers students the opportunity to<br />

conduct in-depth exploration into problems related<br />

to their major core of study not specifically<br />

covered in other courses. A substantial written<br />

report, as well as an informal oral report will be<br />

required. <strong>St</strong>udents will meet regularly with their<br />

instructor. No more than three (3) credits can<br />

count towards the master’s degree. Prerequisite:<br />

Permission of department. “In progress” grade<br />

option available for this course.<br />

SPED 716. Contemporary Issues in Special<br />

Education<br />

3 credits<br />

This course focuses on current issues facing the<br />

field of special education. Topics that impact on<br />

today’s special education teacher as well as future<br />

issues will be explored through a seminar format.<br />

Prerequisite: SPED 210 or equivalent.<br />

SPED 720. Special Topics<br />

1–3 credits<br />

A study of current specialized topics in the field<br />

of special education. Prerequisite: SPED 210 or<br />

equivalent.<br />

SPED 750. Curriculum Development<br />

and Design<br />

3 credits<br />

Course focuses on aspects of special education<br />

curriculum in the schools including historical<br />

foundation, curriculum planning implementation<br />

and evaluation, principles of curriculum organization,<br />

outside forces impacting on the curriculum<br />

and future trends. Prerequisite: Currently<br />

held licensure in special education or permission<br />

of instructor.<br />

SPED 751. <strong>St</strong>aff Development<br />

in the Schools<br />

3 credits<br />

Course will focus on skills in modes of intervention<br />

diagnosing problems and identifying target<br />

groups as part of the staff development process<br />

designed to improve schools. <strong>St</strong>udents will be<br />

concerned with planning, conducting, and evaluating<br />

staff development programs. Prerequisite:<br />

Currently held licensure in special education or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />

EDUC 552. Diagnostic and Prescriptive<br />

Techniques of Teaching Reading 4 credits<br />

Diagnostic and prescriptive techniques for classroom<br />

teachers of reading. Corrective techniques<br />

appropriate for less severe reading disabilities;<br />

writing diagnostic and progress reports; parent<br />

interviews; designing prescriptions for teaching,<br />

tutoring and evaluating children in clinical set-<br />
