+CRJU 101. Introduction to<br />

Criminal Justice<br />

3 credits<br />

Historical and philosophical account of the development<br />

of American criminal justice with emphasis<br />

on constitutional requirements. Survey of<br />

enforcement, court and corrections subsystems<br />

on a national, state and local level.<br />

+CRJU 102. Introduction to<br />

Law Enforcement<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is designed to be an introduction to<br />

the social scientific study of police in the United<br />

<strong>St</strong>ates. The historical development of police, the<br />

functions of police, different types and styles of<br />

policing, and factors affecting policing in the U.S.<br />

will be examined. Prerequisite: CRJU 101.<br />

CRJU 221. Criminal Law and Procedure 3 credits<br />

This course examines the goals and purposes of<br />

American criminal law. Elements of crime, criminal<br />

defenses, rules of law regarding basic police<br />

procedures such as searches and seizures, interrogations,<br />

and testimony will be explored.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 102.<br />

CRJU 231. Contemporary Corrections 3 credits<br />

Developmental history of American corrections<br />

with emphasis on contemporary issues related to<br />

the correctional system and process, correctional<br />

clientele, treatment of inmates in institutions and<br />

community programs and the future of correctional<br />

practice. Prerequisite: CRJU 101.<br />

CRJU 241. Crime Prevention <strong>St</strong>rategies 3 credits<br />

Crime opportunity reduction with emphasis on<br />

the development and implementation of crime<br />

prevention strategies, the role of crime prevention<br />

specialists in policing and private security, the use<br />

of security devices and procedures and crime risk<br />

reduction through environmental design.<br />

Prerequisite: CRJU 101.<br />

CRJU 250. Applied Criminal<br />

Justice Issues<br />

3 credits<br />

This course examines each branch of the criminal<br />

justice system for examples of current ethical<br />

problems. Specific examples include prosecutorial,<br />

misconduct, the application of excessive force,<br />

police brutality, racial profiling, and passing and<br />

enforcing unjust laws. Prerequisites: CRJU 101,<br />

PHIL 207.<br />

CRJU 303. Police, Problems, and<br />

Practices<br />

3 credits<br />

This course examines how law enforcement agencies,<br />

faced with budgetary constraints, balance<br />

social, legal and political interests when developing<br />

responses to community problems. Issues of<br />

accountability and responsibility, civil liability,<br />

and integration of technology, police misconduct,<br />

excessive use of force, and selection are explored.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 102, 222.<br />

CRJU 313. Offender Treatment and<br />

Theories<br />

3 credits<br />

This course discusses the foundations of correctional<br />

settings. Theories pertaining to the treatment<br />

of offenders will be discussed as well as the<br />

classification of offenders. Prerequisites: CRJU<br />

101, 231.<br />

CRJU 314. Probation, Parole,<br />

and Community Corrections<br />

3 credits<br />

This course is an examination of probation and<br />

parole, treatment philosophies, and strategies for<br />

supervision in the community. Practice in use of<br />

presenting investigation and examination of innovations<br />

in community-based correctional alternatives.<br />

Prerequisites: CRJU 101, 231.<br />

+CRJU 316. Juvenile Justice<br />

3 credits<br />

Crime and delinquency as an individual and<br />

social problem. Included are conceptual models<br />

of social deviance, theories of criminal and delinquent<br />

behavior and the administration of justice<br />

in democratic society. An applied research project<br />

is required. Prerequisite: CRJU 101 or SOC 101.<br />
