PED 265. Introduction to<br />

Exercise Science<br />

3 credits<br />

This course will introduce students to the field of<br />

Exercise Science that involves the following topic<br />

areas: motor learning/control, kinesiology/biomechanics,<br />

and exercise physiology.<br />

PED 280. Special Physical Education 3 credits<br />

Provides an overview of general program development<br />

related to impairments, disabilities, and<br />

handicapping conditions of the mentally, physical,<br />

and emotionally challenged individual.<br />

Emphasis is placed on both medical and educational<br />

methods to meet needs of these challenged<br />

individuals.<br />

PED 282. Exercise and Aging<br />

3 credits<br />

Introduction to basic physical changes that occur<br />

with aging, focusing on the difference between<br />

health-related aspects of aging that are largely<br />

biological and immutable and those that are<br />

largely a function of lifestyle, behavior and attitudes.<br />

Emphasis on exercise health promotion,<br />

and wellness among older adults. Examination of<br />

health dimensions important to building exercise<br />

and leisure programs for older adults.<br />

PED 290. Exercise Pharmacology<br />

and Nutrition<br />

3 credits<br />

This course will provide students with the skills<br />

to understand drugs and supplements that are<br />

frequently used by the physically active population<br />

and those seeking to be physically fit.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will also learn how various commonly<br />

used drugs and supplements can affect exercise<br />

performance in their patients and athletes.<br />

Practical guidelines are offered to enable the student<br />

to monitor and circumvent adverse reactions<br />

to drug therapies. For the athletic training student<br />

an extra hour of class can be taken to allow<br />

for nutrition content to be covered.<br />

PED 291. Clinical Athletic Training IA 1 credit<br />

This is the first course in the sequence of Clinical<br />

Athletic Training Experiences. Skill learning and<br />

application is emphasized in this class. These kills<br />

include performing skills required for a physical<br />

examination, taping, writing SOAP notes, equipment<br />

fitting, sport rules and regulations, prevention<br />

techniques, ability to set-up and operate<br />

ultra sound and electrical muscle stimulation and<br />

patient care. In all Clinical Athletic Training<br />

courses individual and team problem solving<br />

techniques are emphasized. The student is also<br />

encouraged to develop information seeking skills<br />

activities. Prerequisite: <strong>admit</strong>tance to Athletic<br />

Training program to enroll.<br />

PED 292. Clinical Athletic Training IB 1 credit<br />

This is the second course in the sequence of<br />

Clinical Athletic Training courses. Skill learning<br />

and application is emphasized in this course.<br />

These competencies include performing skills<br />

required for a physical examination, taping, writing<br />

SOAP notes, equipment fitting, sport rules<br />

and regulations, prevention techniques, ability to<br />

set-up and operate ultra sound and electrical<br />

muscle stimulation and patient care. In all<br />

Clinical Athletic Training courses individual and<br />

team problem solving techniques are emphasized.<br />

The student is also encouraged to develop information<br />

seeking skills activities. The material<br />

explored previously in PED 291 will now be<br />

expanded. The student will compare and contrast<br />

different clinical athletic training experiences.<br />

Emphasis is placed on group cooperation and<br />

interaction among other student athletic trainers,<br />

clinical instructors, and clinical supervisors.<br />

Prerequisite: Admittance to Athletic Training<br />

program.<br />

PED 300. Advanced Swimming (Lifeguard<br />

Training)<br />

2 credits<br />

Knowledge and practical experience in lifeguard<br />

training. The American Red Cross certification<br />

for Lifeguard and CPR for the Professional<br />

Rescuer will be given to those who successfully<br />

complete the necessary requirements.<br />

Prerequisite: PED 200 Intermediate Swimming or<br />

equivalent ability.<br />
