Lori Gaskin, Ph.D. President Welcome to the treasure that is Santa Barbara City College! Whether you are a new or returning student, you have made an excellent choice for pursuing your educational goals. SBCC has long had an outstanding reputation as one of the top community colleges in the country. This standing recently was validated by the college co-winning the prestigious Aspen Institute Prize for Community College Excellence. Now, one of the top two community colleges in the nation, SBCC also has the distinction of being the only community college in California named to the Aspen Top 10 list for two years in a row. How was SBCC able to achieve this recognition? Student success is a major criterion in the Aspen Institute competition, and our college was able to demonstrate outstanding results. This is due in large part to SBCC’s collective focus on the educational goals of each and every one of our students. I see this every day in my interactions with faculty and staff—the caring and richness that characterize our teaching, service and support and the dedication which can only be described as consistently above and beyond expectations. The result of these efforts clearly has been reflected over time in our students’ successes. In addition, our high-quality, first-rate academic programs have set SBCC apart from others. We provide the foundation for transfer to any one of the University of California and California State University campuses or private universities as well as strong preparation and opportunities in a wealth of career fields. SBCC’s transfer program includes Transfer Admission Guarantee agreements with 15 colleges and universities and articulation agreements with 55 more. We have developed innovative new transfer programs such as Express to Success (ESP), one for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors, and another for students majoring in business, the fine arts, humanities and the social and behavioral sciences. Our Career and Technical Education programs cover a wide range of fields and offer our graduates extensive opportunities to build successful and meaningful careers in nursing, computer information systems, culinary arts, automotive technology, construction technology, administration of justice, accounting, entrepreneurship, media arts, environmental horticulture, early childhood education, marine diving technology, and so much more. Another strength of our college has been our Dual Enrollment program, one of the largest and most successful in the state. Local area high school students can take college-level courses, either at their schools or at the SBCC campus, earning credit toward their college studies. Working with our educational partners, SBCC reaches out to the community, giving thousands of high school students their first exposure to college. These examples, plus so many more, laid the groundwork for our recognition by the Aspen Institute. We are both honored by this award and inspired to continue to build upon the legacy of excellence that has come to define SBCC.
