(NAMA) is an organization serving amateur
Mycologists for over 50 years. Evolving
from Eisenhower’s People-to-People
Committee on Fungi in November
1959, NAMA was founded by
Harry S. Knighton (1915-1999) of
Portsmouth, Ohio, our first chairman.
NAMA focuses on serving individuals
as well as Mycological Societies
and Mushroom clubs.

North American Mycological Association
To promote, pursue and advance the science of mycology
NAMA provides many educational opportunities
for members and affiliated clubs. NAMA’s
Speakers Bureau has a pool of over 50
professional and amateur mycologists who can
provide excellent programs for club meetings
and forays.
NAMA has an extensive inventory of programs
for loan in a variety of media (CD, DVD, slides and
VHS) for use by individuals and in club meetings.
The newest programs are in PowerPoint format
with sound, created by Dr. Michael Beug, and can
be customized for your presentation.
NAMA is a national resource for mushroom
poisoning and toxicology information. We host
a mushroom poisoning case registry. A large
group of volunteer mushroom identifiers respond
to mushroom poisoning incidents from Poison
Control and hospital emergency rooms all over
North America.
The Mycophile, NAMA’s newsletter, is a great
source of club information, news, events, book
reviews, articles, photography contest results,
and the mushroom of the month.
The journal McIlvainea is an online, peer-reviewed
journal, with scientific papers, toxicology reports,
and more. NAMA offers extensive information
about mushroom cultivation on the NAMA website.
NAMA and its affiliated clubs sponsor an annual
foray, where a large cohort of professional
mycologists and hundreds of participants
explore the fungi of the local region. These
events are a great place to meet new people,
learn from fellow mycologists, and attend
dozens of presentations and workshops.
In addition, NAMA sponsors regional forays,
where attendance is limited to ensure an
in-depth learning and convivial atmosphere.
