MEDICAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM - Mahidol University

MAHIDOL

UNIVERSITY

MAHIDOL University is credited

having the strongest programs

in both clinical medicine and

biomedical research in Thailand.

The research environment is truly

special - one of constant

collaboration and collegiality -

focused on training the best scientists

doing the best science.

The MU-MSP will provide you with

a unique opportunity in an exciting,

stimulating and supportive environment.

Our program is designed to facilitate

your path in the context of a challenging

course of study.

Although a combined degree program

is very demanding, students are supported

by the collegiality and cooperative spirit of an

amazing group of peers and mentors at

Mahidol University.

The successful candidate will be granted a full

scholarship that includes Ph.D.- tuition fees,

a monthly stipend, expenses to cover travels and

lodging for a period of not more than six months

of overseas study-leave and academic meeting.

Medical students at Mahidol University with grade

point averages (GPA) not less than 3.0 for the

second and thrid year of study or the two year

combined are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Interested students may contact the program

office for submission of application documents

and to arrange an interview appointment.

MEDICAL

SCHOLARS

PROGRAM

The MSP training sequence generally consists of

the 2 divided phases of medical school; Phase-1

(B.Sc.) takes 3 and a half years (one pre-med with

two and a half pre-clinical years), followed by three

or more years of graduate research leading to a

doctoral dissertation (Ph.D.) and then Phase-2

(M.D.) comprising the final 3 years of medical

school, clinical clerkships. This curriculum enables

students to complete their B.Sc.- Ph.D. -M.D.

training as efficiently as possible (ca. 10 years) while

maintaining the highest standards for both

degrees; as a result, our graduates have been

exceptionally successful in competing for prestigious

residencies, fellowships and careers.

MAHIDOL

UNIVERSITY

THE PROGRAM

The ‘Medical Scholars Program’ (MSP) is a full

scholarship program for highly qualified medical

students at Mahidol University (MU).The selected

students will be trained to pursue 3 combined

B.Sc. , Ph.D. and M.D. degrees, bridging the gap

between laboratory research and clinical

medicine to become ‘physician-scientists’ or

academic doctors.

Many graduates will become innovative clinicians

who recognize important basic science questions

in clinical findings and apply laboratory

techniques to understand the pathophysiology

of human disease. The training also prepares

students for other niches in which they take

findings from the bench back to the clinic and

bedside.

It is expected that some graduates will become

leaders in genetics, biomedical engineering and

that some will bring clinical perspectives to basic

and /or social science departments. Some will

become medical specialists or will direct

research as section heads in governmental

agencies and industry.

PROGRAMS AND FACULTIES

There are well over a hundred core faculty members

at MU and over 20 graduate programs.

The MSP faculty members tend to be leading

researchers expert in postgraduate training

or exciting young faculty.

The MSP faculty has strong research funding support

from a wide variety of both national and international

sources including the National Institutes of Health,

the National Science Foundation, the Thailand

Research Funds, Biotec-NSTDA and many government,

private organizations and foundations. Many other

basic science and clinical faculty at MU and overseas

collaborators are available to serve as mentors, giving

students maximum choice and flexibility in the

selection of a program tailored to their individual

research interests.
