<strong>ESERP</strong> is a Business and Social Science School with recognized prestige<br />
of service for society, both nationally and internationally. Officially<br />

Doc<strong>to</strong>r Edward Bernays Freud was an academic<br />
and scientist dedicated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> research of <strong>the</strong><br />
social sciences and its application for companies;<br />
fruit of his work as a Consultant he created and<br />
defined <strong>the</strong> profession of Public Relations, giving<br />
this an academical, <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical body.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> year 1923 he was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>to</strong> publish a work<br />
on Public Relations and <strong>to</strong> give classes on said<br />
discipline at <strong>the</strong> University of New York. He gave<br />
birth <strong>to</strong> a profession specialised in understanding<br />
<strong>the</strong> public and interpreting <strong>the</strong>m as its clients <strong>to</strong><br />
be able <strong>to</strong> persuade <strong>the</strong>m, thus benefiting both<br />
parties.<br />
As a consultant he was described by <strong>the</strong><br />
magazine Life as one of <strong>the</strong> most influential<br />
people of <strong>the</strong> 20th century. He assessed<br />
clients as Presidents of <strong>the</strong> United States, such<br />
as Coolidge, Wilson, Hoover, Eisenhower,<br />
Carter, Reagan and Bush; businessmen such<br />
as Rockefeller, Edison and Ford, <strong>the</strong> most<br />
important companies in <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>rs of petroleum,<br />
construction, jewelery and arms. He directed<br />
important campaigns for governments in distinct<br />
countries. He refused <strong>to</strong> work for Franco, Hitler<br />
and Somoza.<br />
Academically he graduated as an engineer from<br />
Cornell University and was awarded <strong>the</strong> title of<br />
Doc<strong>to</strong>r by distinct Universities of <strong>the</strong> world which<br />
recognised his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific<br />

of what <strong>to</strong>day is <strong>ESERP</strong> in 1986, under <strong>the</strong><br />
auspices of <strong>the</strong> Colegio San José, founded in<br />
1881. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with this a school was born which<br />
<strong>to</strong>day has campuses in Madrid, Barcelona and<br />
Palma de Mallorca, associated through teaching<br />
agreements with some of <strong>the</strong> most important<br />
educational and research institutions in various<br />
countries of <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
Academically, he is a Ph. D. by <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
of Legal and Economic Sciences -UCJC-, he<br />
graduated in Economic Science from <strong>the</strong><br />
University of Barcelona, has a Master in Business<br />
Administration and Management from ESADE<br />
and later graduated in Management from Indiana<br />
University.<br />
He is <strong>the</strong> author of numerous works,<br />
compendiums and articles on Economic and<br />
Financial Science.<br />
<strong>ESERP</strong> Background<br />
Josep Segura Bayarri<br />
His<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>ESERP</strong> from 1881 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>present</strong><br />
The educational vocation of <strong>ESERP</strong> dates back<br />
<strong>to</strong> 1881 in <strong>the</strong> city of Barcelona. Its earliest<br />
beginnings are found in <strong>the</strong> school which was<br />
<strong>the</strong>n known as Colegio San José and its founder,<br />
<strong>the</strong> professor Josep Segura Bayarri, who was<br />
a teacher with great pedagogical and scientific<br />
rigour.<br />
From <strong>the</strong> hand of its founder, <strong>the</strong> School evolved<br />
generation after generation, always directed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> same family, with a great tradition based<br />
on <strong>the</strong> teaching vocation, a saga of professors,<br />
teachers and pedagogues of recognised prestige<br />
which, during six generations and after 130 years<br />
up <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>present</strong> has taught more than 20,000<br />
alumni.<br />
This leads us <strong>to</strong> ask <strong>the</strong> question; When did <strong>the</strong><br />
change from school <strong>to</strong> higher education first<br />
occur? To answer this question we must go<br />
back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20th century, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1950,<br />
when <strong>the</strong> Public Administration authorised that<br />
students were able <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> higher education<br />
of Commerce and Trade Expertise and later<br />
that of Professor of Trade and Commerce, with<br />
<strong>the</strong>se moments being <strong>the</strong> birth of what would<br />
later become <strong>the</strong> School of Business and Social<br />
Science <strong>ESERP</strong> in Barcelona and Madrid in <strong>the</strong><br />
year 1986. Its first Presidents were eminent<br />
professors and researchers, <strong>the</strong> Spaniard José<br />
Luis Barquero Garcés, <strong>the</strong> Englishman Sam Black<br />
and <strong>the</strong> North-American Edward L. Bernays Freud.<br />
Creation of <strong>the</strong> first institution<br />
The San José School was developed in 1881,<br />
at an important time for Barcelona. The same<br />
year Carlos and Bar<strong>to</strong>lomé Godo founded <strong>the</strong><br />
La Vanguardia newspaper, which celebrated<br />
its 130th anniversary in <strong>the</strong> year 2011. But it<br />
would be in 1883 when <strong>the</strong> first graduation of<br />
registered students by <strong>the</strong> founder Josep Segura<br />
Bayarri was <strong>to</strong> take place in <strong>the</strong> city of Barcelona,<br />
Ronda de San Pablo number 29. Five years later<br />
and coinciding with <strong>the</strong> Universal Exposition of<br />
Barcelona, joined with <strong>the</strong> reputation and good<br />
work of Josep Segura Bayarri, <strong>the</strong> school moved<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> newly constructed neighbouring building<br />
and in this way converting itself in<strong>to</strong> a school for<br />
future graduates.<br />
It would be from <strong>the</strong> year 1908 when it began <strong>to</strong><br />
be known by <strong>the</strong> name of “L’Antic Col.legi Sant<br />
Josep”. The scientific work of research <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
with scientifically tested pedagogical models<br />
and tangible results allowed <strong>the</strong> work <strong>to</strong> near<br />
perfection, thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> educational framework<br />
selected by Josep Segura Bayarri, who only “lived<br />
because of and for teaching”.<br />

As a sample of this full dedication, alumni of <strong>the</strong><br />
school who, over time and with this teaching as<br />
a base, became prominent men in <strong>the</strong> city of<br />
Barcelona are intellectuals such as Ferran Boter<br />
i Mauri, who was a lawyer, economist, professor<br />
and deputy mayor of Barcelona; <strong>the</strong> Escorsa<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>rs, important industrial owners of <strong>the</strong><br />

genius on stage; Joan Dotras Villa and Jaume<br />
Mestres, both maestro composers; Jaume<br />
Miret, composer, musician and bari<strong>to</strong>ne; Conrad<br />
Giral, singer at <strong>the</strong> Liceu; Joan Maso Llorens, an<br />
important businessman in <strong>the</strong> area of hostelry,<br />
at<strong>to</strong>rney of <strong>the</strong> Courts. And in this way we could<br />

Ninetieth anniversary<br />
On <strong>the</strong> 6th of Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1973 new installations<br />
were opened and blessed, coinciding with <strong>the</strong><br />
90th anniversary of <strong>the</strong> school.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> 15th of Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1973 a procession of<br />
fifteen buses and hundreds of cars travelled <strong>to</strong><br />
Montserrat <strong>to</strong> give an offering of <strong>the</strong> School’s<br />
flag, which had accompanied us during ninety<br />
years of teaching his<strong>to</strong>ry, handing it over <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Benedictine Community and which is <strong>to</strong>day<br />
ardently kept in <strong>the</strong> Monastery.<br />
Celebration of <strong>the</strong> centenary<br />
With <strong>the</strong> motive of commemorative acts of <strong>the</strong><br />
Centenary 1883- 1983 a retrospective exposition<br />
of memories, pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, diplomas, books,<br />
prints, drawings and o<strong>the</strong>r items was held from<br />
<strong>the</strong> 9th <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 14th of May, 1983. On <strong>the</strong> 12th<br />
of this same month a conference <strong>to</strong>ok place,<br />
overseen by Sr. Prof, Don An<strong>to</strong>nio Goixens i<br />
Duch, permanent member of <strong>the</strong> Royal Academy<br />
of Economic and Financial Sciences of Spain<br />
and Professor of <strong>the</strong> Higher Education School of<br />
Mercantile and Business Studies of Barcelona.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> 15th <strong>the</strong> graves of <strong>the</strong> professors Josep<br />
Segura Bayarri and Joan Verge were visited and<br />
floral acts and prayers were held <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />
a solemn Mass of thanks. The commemorative<br />
plaque can be seen in <strong>the</strong> new installations of<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Employment Forum,of <strong>the</strong> academic<br />
year 2011-2012, 60 companies from 20<br />
different sec<strong>to</strong>rs participated along with<br />
500 candidates from 15 specialities and<br />
more than 5,000 Speed Networkings were<br />
carried out.<br />
This date constitutes a meeting point between<br />
<strong>the</strong> business world and <strong>the</strong> university, moving<br />
students and alumni closer <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>p institutions and<br />
national and multinational companies from a wide<br />
variety of sec<strong>to</strong>rs. This makes <strong>the</strong> Employment<br />
Forum a unique event.<br />
The students and alumni of <strong>ESERP</strong> Business<br />
School who are searching for employment have<br />
<strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> <strong>present</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir curriculums and<br />
promote <strong>the</strong>ir candidacy <strong>to</strong> Head Hunters or<br />
Personnel Managers, having <strong>the</strong> possibility of<br />
joining actual or future selection processes of <strong>the</strong><br />
participating companies as much as with a fulltime<br />
contract as with an internship.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> Master, studies are evaluated both<br />
individually and as groups of students, including participation in class,<br />
<strong>the</strong> quality of interventions, <strong>the</strong> preparation of case studies, compulsory<br />
attendance, ability <strong>to</strong> innovate and find solutions viable <strong>to</strong> develop cases<br />

<strong>ESERP</strong> has a Quality Academic Committee, an<br />
organism responsible for <strong>the</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>ring and<br />
continuous improvement of programmes as well<br />
as <strong>the</strong> structure, composition, mechanisms and<br />
procedures in <strong>the</strong> different programmes that<br />
are taught as masters. The reality has been<br />
reached <strong>to</strong> measure <strong>the</strong> dynamics and progress<br />
