Highlights will include:

blessed with many old timbered buildings decorated with bursting
window boxes
Day 1: Arrival at Munich airport.
Transfer by minibus or train to our base
hotel at Wallgau.
Day 2: Wallgau. Set in spectacular
alpine scenery, this picturesque village
is a popular holiday destination for
walkers of all levels of fitness. Wallgau
lies in a broad glaciated valley formed
by the River Isar. 2000m peaks rise
up on all sides providing a rich variety
of interesting day walks. Bathing lakes,
waterfalls, narrow gorges and mountain
summits are all within reach.
Day 3: Wallgau to Mittenwald.
These two villages are linked by the Isar
Valley. The route meanders through
the foothills with views to the fertile
farmland below. Nearing Mittenwald,
the valley narrows at the meeting of
two majestic ranges, the Wetterstein
and Karwendel Gebirge. 7 miles
(11km).
Day 4: Mittenwald. Though one of
Bavaria’s premier resorts, Mittenwald
retains a tranquil atmosphere. Visitors
are attracted by the clear mountain air
and the extensive range of hill-walking
available in the area. Towering over
Mittenwald to the east is the imposing
Karwendel west summit, whose sheer
wall rises to 2385m. A cable car ride
to the summit provides dizzy views
across the Alps. Other temptations
include the Leutasch Gorge and Valley,
a beautiful and little explored tributary
of the Isar; two nearby bathing lakes,
the Ferchensee and Lautersee; and the
excellent violin-making museum.
Day 5: Mittenwald to Garmisch-
Partenkirchen. The route skirts the
lower slopes of the Wettersteingebirge,
alternating between alpine meadows
and pine forests with superb views
of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest
mountain. At either end of the day, a
chair lift and gondola are available to
shorten the distance and even out the
ups and downs. 10 miles (16km).
Day 6: Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
An internationally renowned resort,
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is an
amalgamation of two distinct and
very different towns. Garmisch, chic
and cosmopolitan, contrasts with
Partenkirchen’s old world Bavarian
charm. Each is appealing, and a day
can easily be absorbed exploring the
museums, shops and back streets.
Again, the main summer activity is
walking. Well-marked paths radiate from
the town, leading to idyllic lakes and
spectacular gorges lying concealed in the
surrounding mountains. On a clear day,
an excursion to the Zugspitze summit
by mountain railway and cable car offers
panoramic views of the Alps.
Day 7: Garmisch-Partenkirchen
