price. In <strong>the</strong> long term however,<br />
extremely low price levels lead to<br />
company failures. If, <strong>in</strong> relation to<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir pric<strong>in</strong>g policy, suppliers are<br />
forced to go to <strong>the</strong> limit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
capacity, one shouldn't be surprised<br />
if <strong>the</strong>re is an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>solvencies. However, if <strong>the</strong><br />
supplier goes bankrupt, <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
outcome will be an enormous<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> costs for <strong>the</strong> OEMs.<br />
Anyone who achieves a radical<br />
improvement <strong>in</strong> his own f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>electromobility</strong>.<br />

development), had <strong>in</strong>vited three highly<br />
qualified experts to take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussions:<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hagen from<br />
Munich, who was active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>field</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
electrically-driven utility vehicles back<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980s, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sonnenborn,<br />
who is <strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Technical<br />
College <strong>in</strong> H<strong>of</strong> and a market specialist<br />
who worked for Bavarian automobile<br />
manufacturers for several years, and<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Magerl who, after work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for an OEM and a supplier <strong>in</strong> Baden-<br />
Württemberg and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA, is now<br />
<strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amberg-Weiden Technical<br />
College. The specialists and management<br />
staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL<br />
Group listened attentively and took an<br />
active part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussions.<br />
vehicle-drive system, <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>electromobility</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular was exam<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
more closely. The discussion<br />
focused on <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
SCHERDEL Group <strong>the</strong> metal-work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
division is dependent on <strong>the</strong> combustion<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> most probable<br />
scenario <strong>in</strong> relation to future vehicledrive<br />
mechanisms will be a development<br />
from <strong>the</strong> combustion eng<strong>in</strong>e via<br />
<strong>the</strong> hybrid drive system (with variations<br />
rang<strong>in</strong>g from mild hybrid and micro<br />
hybrid to full hybrid or plug-<strong>in</strong> hybrid)<br />
<strong>the</strong> participants concluded that, as far<br />
as cooperation with <strong>the</strong> customers was<br />
concerned, SCHERDEL was on <strong>the</strong><br />
right track. Irrespective <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />
electric propulsion system will play<br />
an appreciable part <strong>in</strong> automobile<br />
manufacture by 2015 or by 2025,<br />
SCHERDEL is already supply<strong>in</strong>g series<br />
components for <strong>the</strong> automatic start/stop<br />
function. In <strong>the</strong> future, <strong>the</strong> aim is to<br />
<strong>of</strong>fset <strong>the</strong> decrease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />
components for <strong>the</strong> combustion eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
by developments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>field</strong> <strong>of</strong> methods<br />
for connect<strong>in</strong>g batteries, systems<br />
for mount<strong>in</strong>g and bundl<strong>in</strong>g batteries,<br />
and plastic/metal parts for connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
electric-propulsion components. In<br />
addition, <strong>in</strong>tensive research is already<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g carried out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>field</strong> <strong>of</strong> new<br />
connection technologies such as laser<br />
weld<strong>in</strong>g, and also <strong>in</strong> relation to an<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> electrically conductive<br />

Donations for Africa<br />
The Association known as<br />
"HAND <strong>in</strong> HAND Wehrsdorf<br />
e.V.", whose chairman Mr<br />
Mesabrowski is <strong>the</strong> General<br />
Manager <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL<br />
factory <strong>in</strong> Seifhennersdorf,<br />
organises a wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />
activities to support <strong>the</strong><br />
African mission "Mwnagaza<br />
Africa International" <strong>in</strong> Eldoret<br />
<strong>in</strong> Kenya. At present, donations<br />
are required <strong>in</strong> order to<br />
supply <strong>the</strong> school <strong>in</strong> Kimumu<br />
with chairs and tables for <strong>the</strong><br />
ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong><br />
children. A ro<strong>of</strong> for <strong>the</strong> school<br />
kitchen is also urgently needed.<br />
At present, <strong>the</strong> cook<strong>in</strong>g<br />
has to be done <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open<br />
air. For many children, <strong>the</strong><br />
school kitchen provides <strong>the</strong><br />
only hot meal <strong>the</strong>y get a day.<br />
If required for your <strong>in</strong>cometax<br />
return, receipts can be<br />
issued for donations received.<br />
The Association is currently<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g for people will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
act as a sponsor for <strong>the</strong> children<br />

new Children's Home from<br />
about <strong>the</strong> middle/<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />
2010. Such a sponsorship<br />
costs 40 EUR per month.<br />
This amount covers all <strong>the</strong><br />
expense required for <strong>the</strong><br />
child, such as food, cloth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
school fees, school uniform,<br />
as well as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

On <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>of</strong> Mr Lutz Mesabrowski,<br />
<strong>the</strong> General Manager <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
SCHERDEL factory <strong>in</strong> Seifhennersdorf,<br />
Walter Bach <strong>the</strong> Group Manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Director agreed to help <strong>in</strong> an area<br />
where none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational relief<br />
organisations were provid<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
assistance on a large scale. In a poor,<br />
rural district <strong>in</strong> Kenya, follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German SOS-K<strong>in</strong>derdörfer<br />
(society for <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> children<br />
<strong>in</strong> need), <strong>the</strong> Christian mission<br />
plans to set up a total <strong>of</strong> five homes,<br />
each <strong>of</strong> which can accommodate twelve<br />
children. Thanks to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial support<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL company, SFS<br />
Spezialfedern, it was possible to start<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first Children's Home <strong>in</strong><br />
2008. S<strong>in</strong>ce August this year, twelve<br />
children, who come from <strong>the</strong> worst<br />
social conditions and who had to spend<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir lives as street children without<br />
parents, have now been liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an<br />
orderly, family-like community where<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are looked after by two adults. In<br />
addition, by build<strong>in</strong>g a school, <strong>the</strong> mission<br />
has ensured that <strong>the</strong> children have<br />
access to education, thus giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m a<br />
chance to escape from <strong>the</strong> vicious<br />

ng <strong>of</strong> children's homes <strong>in</strong> Africa<br />
id<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong>to action<br />
circle <strong>of</strong> poverty, drugs, crim<strong>in</strong>ality and<br />
illnesses such as AIDS.<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r important project which <strong>the</strong><br />
supporters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mission are plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for <strong>the</strong> future is <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> a<br />
small hospital facility so that medical<br />
assistance will be available locally.<br />
At present, <strong>the</strong> nearest hospital for<br />
<strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong> Kimumu, a suburb <strong>of</strong><br />
Eldoret, is so far away that it can only<br />
be reached with difficulty. When he<br />
returned from his last journey to Africa,<br />
Mr Mesabrowski, who has been support<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> mission privately for three<br />
years now, presented <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL<br />
management with a series <strong>of</strong> photos<br />
document<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
"SCHERDEL Children's Home". Thereupon<br />
Mr Walter Bach spontaneously<br />
agreed to provide additional assistance<br />
– despite <strong>the</strong> tight economic situation<br />
currently prevail<strong>in</strong>g. This means that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y will be able to start build<strong>in</strong>g a second<br />
Children's Home <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future.<br />
However, it is not only <strong>in</strong> Africa but<br />
all over <strong>the</strong> world that SCHERDEL<br />
considers it a duty to help people and<br />
so, whe<strong>the</strong>r on a large or a small scale,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Group endeavours aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong><br />
to translate <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
corporate philosophy <strong>in</strong>to action: one<br />
example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>field</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
social commitment concerns <strong>the</strong> region<br />
<strong>of</strong> Upper Franconia where, <strong>in</strong> addition<br />
to sponsor<strong>in</strong>g cultural activities such as<br />
<strong>the</strong> "Festival Mitte Europa" (Central European<br />
Festival), <strong>the</strong>y provide f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
support for numerous associations and<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions. Mention should also be<br />
made <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that SCHERDEL<br />
sponsors sport<strong>in</strong>g events and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Group's support for competitions such<br />
as "Jugend forscht" (research projects<br />
by young people). O<strong>the</strong>r examples <strong>of</strong> a<br />
company policy centred on people <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
support relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> provision<br />
<strong>of</strong> meals for a school specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> remedial<br />
education, <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> jobs<br />
by means <strong>of</strong> telework<strong>in</strong>g and part-time<br />
employment or a flexible system <strong>of</strong><br />
rules relat<strong>in</strong>g to work<strong>in</strong>g hours so that<br />
staff can attend to <strong>the</strong>ir children or look<br />
after relatives. All <strong>the</strong>se examples are<br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g pro<strong>of</strong> that <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL group,<br />
as a medium-sized enterprise, does not<br />
merely regard guid<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples such<br />
as "In all our activities <strong>the</strong> focus is on<br />
people" as superficial publicity gloss<br />

The high standard <strong>of</strong> staff<br />

SCHERDEL subsidiary<br />

<strong>GmbH</strong> <strong>in</strong> Dörfles-Esbach<br />
near Coburg was demonstrated<br />
recently when a special<br />
honour was conferred.<br />
The Bavarian government<br />
presented an <strong>of</strong>ficial award<br />
to Christiane Kamolz who<br />
received her tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
this well-known company<br />
specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> mechanical<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and is now employed<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Application<br />
Technology Division. In <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>al certificate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vocational<br />
School at Coburg Ms<br />
Kamolz received <strong>the</strong> best<br />
mark, grade one, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Chamber <strong>of</strong> Industry and<br />
Commerce she received <strong>the</strong><br />

HAMUEL presents <strong>the</strong> HSTM 1000 turn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and mill<strong>in</strong>g centre at <strong>the</strong> EMO <strong>in</strong> Milan<br />

amuel Masch<strong>in</strong>enbau, a company<br />
located <strong>in</strong> Coburg and a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL Group, was very<br />
satisfied with its participation <strong>in</strong> EMO,<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational mechanical-eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
trade-fair held at Milan <strong>in</strong> Italy. Here<br />
it should be noted: <strong>the</strong> general feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade is better than <strong>the</strong> actual situation.<br />
There is no doubt that <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e-tool<br />
manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry has<br />
been badly hit by <strong>the</strong> economic crisis<br />
but <strong>in</strong> Milan <strong>the</strong>re were also people who<br />
believe that <strong>the</strong> markets are on <strong>the</strong> way<br />
to recovery.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>ternational trade-fair for metal<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g takes place every two years,<br />
alternately <strong>in</strong> Hanover and <strong>in</strong> Milan. At<br />
<strong>the</strong> EMO, HAMUEL presented <strong>the</strong><br />
HSTM 1000 turn<strong>in</strong>g and mill<strong>in</strong>g centre,<br />
equipped with a BLUM touch probe for<br />
measur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> workpiece and a BLUM<br />
laser for tool <strong>of</strong>fset compensation. Here<br />
visitors were particularly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> impressive "live performance" <strong>of</strong><br />
cutt<strong>in</strong>g procedures for a turb<strong>in</strong>e blade.<br />
The mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HSTM series were<br />
developed for <strong>the</strong> efficient production <strong>of</strong><br />
high-precision workpieces, such as turb<strong>in</strong>e<br />
blades. The mach<strong>in</strong>e is first-rate<br />
for both s<strong>in</strong>gle-piece and series production,<br />
as well as o<strong>the</strong>r complicated<br />
turned and milled parts. Thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />
most modern drive-system and control<br />
technology – for f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g parts with extremely<br />
complicated contours for example<br />
– <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e ensures a high level<br />
<strong>of</strong> productivity and outstand<strong>in</strong>g flexibility.<br />
For HAMUEL this was <strong>the</strong> first appearance<br />
at <strong>the</strong> trade-fair <strong>in</strong> Milan.<br />
Thanks to <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> PROTESA,<br />
<strong>the</strong> newly established agency <strong>in</strong> Italy,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y were able to welcome a large<br />
number <strong>of</strong> visitors from <strong>the</strong> trade –<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly from Italy <strong>of</strong> course – to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
stand measur<strong>in</strong>g 96 square metres. Inquiries<br />
from all over <strong>the</strong> world and a<br />
steady flow <strong>of</strong> visitors to <strong>the</strong> stand –<br />
people with <strong>the</strong> appropriate expertise –<br />
confirmed that <strong>the</strong> decision to take part<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade-fair had been <strong>the</strong> right one.<br />
On an exhibition area <strong>of</strong> 180,000<br />
square metres, thanks to <strong>the</strong> participation<br />
<strong>of</strong> approximately 2,000 manufacturers<br />
from 35 countries, EMO 2009 provided<br />
a general view <strong>of</strong> all mach<strong>in</strong>es for<br />
<strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> new, highly competitive<br />
products <strong>of</strong> an excellent technical<br />
standard.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e-tool<br />
manufacturers Asia will provide <strong>the</strong><br />
driv<strong>in</strong>g force. In Ch<strong>in</strong>a and India <strong>in</strong><br />
particular, <strong>in</strong>vestments have suffered<br />
less from <strong>the</strong> economic crisis and <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g year we may expect an<br />
improvement here.<br />

ith <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> an energy<br />
absorber for <strong>the</strong> protection<br />
<strong>of</strong> pedestrians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a car<br />
accident, <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL subsidiary<br />
INNOTEC was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>alists for<br />
<strong>the</strong> 2009 Steel Innovation Award presented<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Steel Centre <strong>in</strong> Düsseldorf.<br />
From among a total <strong>of</strong> 644 projects<br />
submitted, <strong>the</strong> jury was particularly<br />
impressed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative character<br />
<strong>of</strong> this SCHERDEL development.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a collision with a car,<br />
<strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury to pedestrians is usually<br />
very high. By design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impact<br />
zones at <strong>the</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vehicle appropriately,<br />
<strong>the</strong> automobile manufacturers<br />
are try<strong>in</strong>g to counteract serious <strong>in</strong>juries.<br />
Here <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>ges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> car bonnet are<br />
one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> focal po<strong>in</strong>ts. The aim <strong>of</strong> this<br />
new development by INNOTEC was to<br />
make <strong>the</strong>se bonnet h<strong>in</strong>ges more "flexible"<br />
with regard to <strong>the</strong> absorption <strong>of</strong><br />
energy. The newly developed component,<br />
which is pretensioned and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />
free from backlash, is <strong>in</strong>stalled under<br />
<strong>the</strong> actual bonnet h<strong>in</strong>ge. When a<br />
body collides with <strong>the</strong> car bonnet, as a<br />
result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plastic deformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
component <strong>the</strong>re is a uniform dissipation<br />
<strong>of</strong> energy and so <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury (HIC value) is considerably<br />
lessened. In this case, <strong>the</strong> optimum<br />
solution has proved to be a mesh-type,<br />
expandable sheet-metal component<br />
made <strong>of</strong> 1.4310 sta<strong>in</strong>less steel. The<br />
correct choice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fix<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> plastic deformation<br />
<strong>of</strong> this expandable component ensures<br />
a more or less constant distribution <strong>of</strong><br />
force. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />
a collision, <strong>the</strong> car bonnet s<strong>in</strong>ks several<br />
centimetres downwards. Essentially,<br />
<strong>the</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sheet-metal component<br />
is caused by a distortion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual small ribs as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a<br />
rib mesh. The expandable sheet-metal<br />
part is simply a stamped component<br />
and <strong>the</strong>refore it can be manufactured<br />
very economically. By vary<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ribs<br />
<strong>the</strong> force characteristic can be adjusted<br />
fairly easily. SCHERDEL developed <strong>the</strong><br />
energy absorber for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> big German<br />
car manufacturers and has applied<br />
to have it patented. The component is<br />
also suitable for o<strong>the</strong>r applications<br />
where <strong>the</strong> aim is to dissipate energy.<br />

under 18 months <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive<br />
work, <strong>the</strong> project team<br />
<strong>of</strong> RHONE RESSORTS<br />
learned a lot about <strong>the</strong> optical<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> design<br />
elements made <strong>of</strong> metal. Of<br />
course <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong><br />
trades outwith <strong>the</strong> automotive<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry are <strong>of</strong> a different<br />
nature but <strong>the</strong>y must be<br />
treated with <strong>the</strong> same degree<br />
<strong>of</strong> care and precision.<br />

In cooperation with <strong>the</strong> "Institute<br />
<strong>of</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g Technology" <strong>the</strong> aim<br />
was to <strong>in</strong>vestigate a large number<br />
<strong>of</strong> hi<strong>the</strong>rto unsolved problems<br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>gs for technical applications.<br />
In addition to <strong>the</strong> Italian Spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Association (ANCCEM), <strong>the</strong><br />
Dutch Spr<strong>in</strong>g Association (DAS),<br />
several European spr<strong>in</strong>g manufacturers<br />
and suppliers such as<br />
those specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
techniques, shot-peen<strong>in</strong>g or wire<br />
manufactur<strong>in</strong>g were also <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> research project.<br />
At a sem<strong>in</strong>ar organized by <strong>the</strong><br />
European Spr<strong>in</strong>g Federation<br />
(ESF), <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong><br />
above project Dr. Peter Thoma<br />
gave a paper on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong><br />
temper<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>of</strong> presett<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
<strong>the</strong> fatigue strength <strong>of</strong> compression<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>gs made <strong>of</strong> different<br />
materials. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> research<br />
project dealt with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frequency <strong>of</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on <strong>the</strong> values obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> relation<br />
to fatigue strength, with <strong>the</strong> optimization<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> hooks <strong>in</strong><br />
relation to tension spr<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />
with <strong>the</strong> calculation <strong>of</strong> stress <strong>in</strong><br />
torsion spr<strong>in</strong>gs, to mention but<br />
a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> topics. For <strong>the</strong> research<br />
project, Dr. Thoma was<br />
able to call on <strong>the</strong> collective technical<br />
expertise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SCHERDEL<br />
Group, for example <strong>in</strong> relation to<br />
<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: stra<strong>in</strong>-gauge technology;<br />
<strong>the</strong> measurement <strong>of</strong><br />
residual stress us<strong>in</strong>g X-ray methods;<br />
calculation procedures such<br />
as <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ite Element Method<br />
(FEM) and Multibody Simulation<br />
(MBS); or <strong>the</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g out and<br />
evaluation <strong>of</strong> fatigue tests. The<br />
results <strong>of</strong> Dr. Thoma's work have<br />
also been <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware toolkit for spr<strong>in</strong>g calculation<br />
distributed by <strong>the</strong> "Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Spr<strong>in</strong>g Technology". In addition,<br />
by means <strong>of</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars, publications<br />
<strong>in</strong> journals and on <strong>the</strong> project's<br />

This topic is becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
important as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> need to reduce<br />
carbon-dioxide emissions s<strong>in</strong>ce,<br />
to an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g extent, <strong>the</strong> car manufacturers<br />
are us<strong>in</strong>g variable valve-tra<strong>in</strong><br />

systems (VVT) <strong>in</strong> order to achieve<br />
this aim. Dynamically stressed spiral<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>gs are very <strong>of</strong>ten used <strong>in</strong> camshaft<br />
adjusters. Until now, <strong>in</strong> order to determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> suitability <strong>of</strong> a spr<strong>in</strong>g design,<br />
<strong>the</strong> only possibility was <strong>the</strong> expensive<br />
method <strong>of</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g prototypes.<br />
FEM model<br />
On <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> a 3-D CAD draw<strong>in</strong>g or<br />
a scanned spr<strong>in</strong>g geometry, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to<br />
account <strong>the</strong> geometrical moment <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ertia<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cross-section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strip, a<br />
2-D FE model is constructed. It is necessary<br />
to reduce <strong>the</strong> model to two dimensions<br />
<strong>in</strong> order to carry out <strong>the</strong> compute-<strong>in</strong>tensive<br />
work with<strong>in</strong> a reasonable<br />
space <strong>of</strong> time.<br />
Once a model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dimensions and<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g geometry has been made,<br />
<strong>the</strong> first step is to calculate <strong>the</strong> static<br />
characteristic moment l<strong>in</strong>e (diagram 1).<br />
Here we can see <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g moment over <strong>the</strong> torsional angle<br />
and <strong>the</strong> good conformity with <strong>the</strong> measurement.<br />
The hysteresis which occurs<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g stress and relief is caused by <strong>the</strong><br />
friction aris<strong>in</strong>g when <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g coils are<br />
<strong>in</strong> contact with each o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> calculations is to make<br />
it possible to assess <strong>the</strong> dynamic behaviour<br />
<strong>of</strong> various different geometries<br />
and characteristics right from <strong>the</strong> development<br />
stage.<br />
Natural frequencies<br />
Here, <strong>the</strong> first stage is to determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> natural frequencies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
under different load conditions. Unfortunately<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ear modal analysis method<br />
is <strong>of</strong> no use here s<strong>in</strong>ce slid<strong>in</strong>g friction<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ts develop between <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g coils. For that reason, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> test, <strong>the</strong> natural frequency<br />
has to be calculated by excitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g followed by Fast Fourier Transformation<br />
(FFT).<br />
As a result <strong>of</strong> this first test it can already<br />
be seen that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
2 <strong>the</strong> oscillation amplitudes are much<br />
smaller than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g 1.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce, however, <strong>the</strong> natural frequencies<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gs change as <strong>the</strong> stress<br />
<strong>in</strong>creases (see spr<strong>in</strong>g 1 <strong>in</strong> diagram 3),<br />
<strong>the</strong> resonance po<strong>in</strong>ts can only be determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
via a frequency ramp under cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />
excitation.<br />

Frequency ramps<br />
The calculation <strong>of</strong> frequency ramps is<br />
done by means <strong>of</strong> oscillat<strong>in</strong>g torsion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> spiral spr<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner mandrel.<br />
This is possible us<strong>in</strong>g a hydraulic ram.<br />
Here <strong>the</strong> amplitude rema<strong>in</strong>s constant<br />
and <strong>the</strong> frequency varies from 0 to 350<br />
Hz. This corresponds to a revolution<br />
speed range from 0 to 21000 r.p.m.<br />
This appears to be very high. However,<br />
it is necessary s<strong>in</strong>ce we have to allow<br />
for excessively high frequencies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
second and third order and s<strong>in</strong>ce, at <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g dimension<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> actual<br />
excitations caused by eng<strong>in</strong>e vibrations<br />
are still completely unknown.<br />
To obta<strong>in</strong> an evaluation, <strong>the</strong> tensile<br />
stress at <strong>the</strong> outer edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
contact is moved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
support<strong>in</strong>g p<strong>in</strong>. As a general rule this<br />
p<strong>in</strong> is necessary to ensure stable position<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outer end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
thus prevent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g from tilt<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
This example shows very clearly that<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g 1 at this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong><br />
maximum stress values are much higher<br />
than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g 2. This is<br />
due to <strong>the</strong> straighter characteristic and<br />
<strong>the</strong> greater load values. Never<strong>the</strong>less<br />
we can assume that <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g has sufficient<br />
fatigue strength if it is subjected<br />
only to <strong>the</strong> stress values occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> static calculation.<br />
In diagram 4 it can be seen that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
region <strong>of</strong> 230 Hz <strong>the</strong>re is a pronounced<br />
occurrence <strong>of</strong> resonance. The variations<br />
<strong>of</strong> stress between two loads,<br />
amount<strong>in</strong>g to approx. 700 [MPa] <strong>in</strong> this<br />
case, <strong>in</strong>evitably result <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fracture <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. An equivalent excitation can<br />
occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a 6-cyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />
V-eng<strong>in</strong>e with a conventional ignition<br />
sequence at approx. 4500 r.p.m.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g 2 no appreciable resonance<br />
occurs until 300 Hz and so this spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
should function for most applications.<br />
As an alternative to excitation at <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>ner mandrel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiral spr<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />
model can also be excited by accelerations,<br />
as <strong>in</strong> a shaker test. As a rule this<br />
is easier with regard to both <strong>the</strong> experiment<br />
and <strong>the</strong> calculations.<br />
Summary<br />
Although <strong>the</strong> simulation tests achieve<br />
results <strong>of</strong> a very high standard, <strong>the</strong>y do<br />
not claim to p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong><br />
resonance <strong>in</strong> dynamically stressed spiral<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>gs with complete accuracy <strong>in</strong><br />
respect <strong>of</strong> amplitude and frequency.<br />
However, <strong>the</strong>y enable us to test, at a<br />
very early development stage, a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g designs with regard to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
suitability for a particular application.<br />
