SMM DAILY NEWS | WHAT‘S UP IN HAMBURG
INFOTAINMENT:
China Time 2008
Hamburg is the most important
location for Chinese companies
in Europe. Over 450
Chinese firms are based in
Hamburg, believed to be more
than in any other European
country. As part of its continuing
China initiative, the city
of Hamburg stages the China
Time annually, which this year
takes place between 12 to 27
September. Over 200 events
are included in the programme
covering subjects ranging from
business, the environment,
politics and law to society
culture, lifestyle, science and
sport. Something is offered
for everyone. A comprehensive
programme of events
can be found in the Internet:
Cotton Club
Live music every day is the motto
for the Cotton Club. This the
oldest jazz club in Hamburg
and has achieved fame well beyond
the city. In July next year,
the Cotton Club celebrates its
50th anniversary and must be
about the only European jazz
cellar which has presented live
music from jazz bands almost
every day for such a long time.
Many German bands have
started their careers in the club
and many of the international
jazz greats regularly take up the
offer to play at the club. And
only a few metres away from
the club you will find the Großneumarkt,
intensive
the new ferry design concept
Icon, which was presented to
the public for the first time at
the SMM yesterday.
The new ferry is at first glance
striking because of its unusual
hull and superstructure shape.
It appears to be similar to a
space ship and the aim of the
futuristic design was to create
an icon for the ship of the future.
The goal is to make travel
been successfully accepted by
the market.
“This shows that in the ferry
market you can not only win
market share but that you can
also create brand new markets,”
said Klas Brogren from Ship-
Pax, a company involved in the
development of the new design.
“For the Icon concept we
have unified all the important
demands on a modern ferry:
marketing of the new design to
ferry companies in the near future.
A marketing trip to Dubai
is planned in the Autumn. The
goal is to launch the first Icon
class ferry by 2013.
The ferry concept is designed to
be able to meet the demands of
a wide range of shipping companies.
“As we have not developed
the Icon following a concrete
inquiry from a single ship
owner, we had to be very flexible,”
said Otto. Size, propulsion
system and interior fittings can
be varied according to area of
operation.
Why the Flensburger Schiffbau-
Gesellschaft decided to develop
the Icon from its own resources,
explains Otto so: “If we want to
retain our market share, we must
display our ability and willingness
to make innovations. This
is vital to hold and expand our
market share in this niche sector
against ever-stronger competition
from the Far East.”
This is why Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft
employs 25 engineers
who solely concentrate on
research and development. “To
keep the lead which we possess,
we must keep the know-how in
our own company,” he said.
Raytheon Anschütz is announcing
at the SMM that it has received
an order for complete
mega yachts from consulting engineers
Peter Meyer Project Management
The mega yachts will be built by
German shipyard ThyssenKrupp
Marine Systems AG (TKMS).
In the next few years, TKMS
shipyard HDW-Gaarden of
Kiel will build exclusive mega
yachts. As a supplier of highquality
navigation and communications
equipment for
mega yachts, Raytheon Anschütz
has won the contract to
fit the newbuildings with complete
Integrated Bridge Systems.
The contract was signed
by PMA, which is in charge of
planning and coordinating
the entire electric packages
of the yachts.
The scope of supply for the
new mega yachts covers four
multifunctional workstations
(radar, ECDIS, conning) with
wide-screen flat panel colour
displays, gyro compass system
with GPS and magnetic compass,
autopilot, steering control
based on CAN bus technology,
well as a complete GMDSS radio
station including Inmarsat
Raytheon Anschütz holds a large
number of references for mega
yachts from leading German and
international shipyards. Beside the
orders for TKMS, Raytheon Anschütz
is currently equipping major
projects for German yards Lürssen
and Abeking & Rasmussen.
The Norwegian Sea-Cargo AS
placed contracts with Rolls-
systems for two roro
vessels and two options. This
marks a new direction in merchant
ship propulsion.
Visit the Inmarsat stand, hall B6, stand 111 and complete a
competition entry form.
Terms and conditions apply.
The first ships in the world to
be fuelled solely with liquefied
natural gas (LNG) have
been ordered by Sea-Cargo AS.
On delivery from the Bharati
shipyard in India in 2010 the
new 132.8m long vessels will
be able to carry 5,600 tonnes of
cargo on a draught of 6m, with
up to 94 TEU of containers on
deck and 1,140 lane-metres of
roro capacity. An important
end result will be a very large
reduction in emissions compared
with a similar ship using
liquid fuel. CO 2 emission will
be reduced by about 20%,
Rolls-Royce predicts, NOx by
about 90%, particulates will be
negligible and sulphur oxide
emissions will be zero.
Inge Bøen, Rolls-Royce Director
Merchant Solutions, said:
“Rolls-Royce is responsible for
the overall vessel design, derived
from Sea-Cargo’s long experience
with coastal and short
sea shipping, and will supply
all the major equipment and
systems including main engine,
reduction gear, propeller, shaft
generator, tunnel bow thruster,
rudder and steering gear, automation,
and the LNG fuel storage
and handling system.”
The Bergen B35:40V12PG
main gas engine uses the proven
Rolls-Royce lean burn
combustion technology that
is the key to obtaining a very
high thermal efficiency and
good control in a gas-fuelled
engine. It is classed for the
load/speed operational pattern
that comes with mechanical
coupling to a controllable
pitch propeller. Consequently
a simple single engine propulsion
system has been possible
in the Sea-Cargo roro vessels
– conventional in all but the
fact that LNG is the fuel.
Cold liquid gas will be stored
in two insulated flasks forward
of the engine room. This
space will also house the evaporator
system that converts
to liquid into a low pressure
warmed gas and supplies this
to the gas engine which turns
the propeller through a reduction
gear and also supplies
the vessel’s electrical load by
means of a generator driven
off the gearbox.
