High <strong>School</strong> REaL Grant Literacy Proposal and End of Year Summary<br />

East High <strong>School</strong><br />

Description of plan:<br />

The Dept. Chairs are committed to the incorporation and follow-up of common literacy/AVID practices<br />

across the building. Members of East's Leadership Team and the departments they lead have requested<br />

release time, extended employment and materials/munchies to continue "writing, writing, writing" work<br />

with their departments.<br />

Under the umbrella of these items:<br />

• Science and English Departments would like to continue departmental work on common writing<br />

rubrics<br />

• Freshman Academy English and Social Studies teachers would like more time to collaboratively<br />

examine student writing and modify curriculum to meet student needs<br />

• Phy-Ed teachers would like to collaborate and create common writing/journaling assignments in<br />

gym classes<br />

• Several members of the Literacy Team and the Leadership Team would like to collaborate to<br />

create a website where all this work can be accessed and displayed for use by other teachers,<br />

students and parents.<br />

Intended outcome:<br />

1. To increase the quantity and quality of student reading and writing across building<br />

2. To increase the quantity and quality of teacher collaboration across the building<br />

3. To standardize teachers expectations and instruction of reading and writing across the building<br />

Project Participants:<br />

Members of the Science, English and Phy-Ed Departments and the Freshman Academy (about 30-<br />

teachers total).<br />

Alignment to Literacy Core Practices:<br />

The main objective of the Literacy Library is to research and support the regular use of literacy practices<br />

throughout the CORE (throughout the building) including:<br />

• Teach academic vocabulary<br />

•<br />

• Teach word knowledge<br />

• Build on student's existing language<br />

knowledge<br />

• Provide purpose using authentic texts<br />

• Teach integrated use of comprehension<br />

strategies within content<br />

Develop understanding of text structures<br />

• Provide authentic writing models<br />

• Teach use of the writing process<br />

Develop writing for a variety of purpose<br />

& audience<br />

• Provide daily purposeful writing<br />

• Develop academic discourse and<br />

discussion skills<br />

• Model and developing metacognition<br />

• Use and develop inquiry<br />

• Use and develop critical analysis and<br />

synthesis<br />

• Develop evaluative skills<br />
