Schulich PhD
The Schulich PhD in Administration is designed to prepare
you for a stimulating career in academic teaching and research.
Graduates from this rigorous program of study contribute to the
global practice and knowledge of business.
Entry into the PhD program is highly competitive with a limited
number of students selected each year. Upon admission,
you will find a highly supportive environment from faculty
members renowned in their areas of research.

Schulich faculty member who might champion your admission.
Areas of Concentration
Schulich’s PhD Program offers six major areas of concentration.
When you are building your program, you must choose one
major and two minor areas of focus. These minor areas may
include cross disciplinary research inside or outside of
Schulich. The major areas of concentration are:
• Accounting
• Finance
• Management Policy
• Marketing
• Operations Management and Information Systems
• Organizational Behaviour and Industrial Relations

Program Requirements
The Schulich doctorate is an individualized program which is
composed of four tightly linked phases of study:
• core courses to acquire in-depth knowledge of the field
you choose to major in and to help develop the skills
and competencies necessary to conduct research
• a comprehensive examination to test your mastery
of your field
• the preparation of a formal research proposal which
demonstrates that there is scope for significant
independent research in your major field
• the dissertation

Admissions Criteria
Applicants are selected by the PhD Program Committee
based upon:
• academic background (minimum
B+ average from a recognized degree)
• research interest
• experience
• recommendations
• GMAT (minimum score 600) or GRE
• English proficiency (if applicable, minimum
TOEFL 600 with 5.0 on TWE or computeradapted
TOEFL 250 with 5.0 on TWE or
New Generation TOEFL of 100+)

Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is provided to all full-time PhD students in
years one through four. Schulich has committed to an excellent
financial package for all incoming PhD students. We are
pleased to offer one of the best financial packages for doctoral
students in Canada. This is based on continued academic
standing, satisfactory progress in one’s work, and maintaining
full time status. A Research Assistantship in years two, three
and four are part of the requirement for support. A limited
number of International Fellowship Scholarships are also
available each year for international students.
In addition to the standard package, you are considered for a
variety of named entrance scholarships and support towards

international students are available at:

Note: Schulich PhD students fall under the faculty
category “Faculty of Graduate Studies” in the fees table.
You must register in each of the three terms during the year
(including summer).
Learning Facilities and Student Housing
The Schulich School of Business offers state of the art teaching
and learning facilities. PhD students are allocated office space
with a personal computer. The Peter F. Bronfman Business
Library contains business periodicals and circulating books
as well as reserve and reference collections. In addition,
in-library and remote access to many networked full-text databases
are available.
As a student, either single or with a family you are eligible to
apply for housing on the York Campus.
Program Length and Full Time Residency
If you hold a related Masters degree, on entry you should be
able to complete all PhD degree requirements within four
years, providing that you maintain full-time residency for the
duration of your studies. Full-time residency is required for a
minimum period of two years. A maximum of six years is granted
to complete the PhD.
