THE PROGRAMME<br />
<strong>Physical</strong> activity, not <strong>of</strong>ten taught in traditional postgraduate programmes<br />
associated with health promotion, is now recognised as an essential component<br />
for underst<strong>and</strong>ing population health. <strong>Physical</strong> inactivity is a major public health<br />
concern in developed countries <strong>and</strong> is associated with the epidemic increases<br />
in preventable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity,<br />
osteoporosis <strong>and</strong> some cancers. As well as providing grounding in popular aspects<br />
<strong>of</strong> health promotion, this programme provides students with an expert overview <strong>of</strong><br />
all aspects <strong>of</strong> physical activity promotion in order to enhance the health <strong>of</strong> modern<br />
society. For careers in physical activity research or promotion, this postgraduate<br />
course is a must.<br />
DURATION AND MODE OF ATTENDANCE<br />
The course is <strong>of</strong>fered in full-time (1 year) <strong>and</strong> part-time (3 years) modes at the<br />
Jordanstown campus <strong>and</strong> is multidisciplinary in nature focusing on physical activity<br />
<strong>and</strong> disease prevention; nutrition for health <strong>and</strong> disease prevention; health <strong>and</strong><br />
its promotion; epidemiology for population health; research methods for physical<br />
activity as well as completion <strong>of</strong> a research project.<br />
Teaching <strong>and</strong> learning methods vary from workshops to formal lectures, to seminars<br />
<strong>and</strong> small group discussions. One module is partially taught on-line, therefore basic<br />
computer skills are required. All assessment is by coursework only with the majority<br />
<strong>of</strong> assignments designed to be responsive to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional needs <strong>of</strong> the student.<br />
ENTRY CONDITIONS<br />
Applicants must possess:<br />
- A second class honours degree (or higher) in a related subject area from a<br />
recognised university or;<br />
- An equivalent st<strong>and</strong>ard (normally 50%) in a Graduate Diploma, Graduate<br />
Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, or an<br />
approved alternative qualification.<br />
All applicants should possess competence in written <strong>and</strong> spoken English by having<br />
GCSE English (grade C) or equivalent.<br />
Accreditation <strong>of</strong> Prior Experiential Learning (APEL): In exceptional circumstances,<br />
where an individual has substantial <strong>and</strong> significant<br />
experiential learning, a portfolio <strong>of</strong> written<br />
evidence demonstrating the meeting <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />
qualities (including subject-specific outcomes,<br />
as determined by the Course Committee) may<br />
be considered as an alternative entrance route.<br />
