Centre Point
ScotsGay’s publisher adds to the debate
opinion
John Hein
publisherr@scotsgay.co.uk
Following the article in the last
issue of ScotsGay, featuring the
Glasgow LGBT Centre's
banning of the magazine,
Gordon Pike co-chair of the
Centre issued the following
statement:
"ScotsGay is a useful resource for
the LGBT community, in terms of its
listings and national coverage.
Unfortunately, we are unable to
continue stocking the magazine due to
its adult content. The Centre is used by
all sections of the community and the
adult content is, by law, not deemed
suitable for young people. This is not a
reflection or a criticism of the general
content of the magazine, simply a
reflection of child protection policy and
legislation. We did inform the
ScotsGay staff at the beginning of
2006 that we wished to reduce the
number of ScotsGay magazines
delivered to the Centre as we were
preparing to re-locate to new premises
and were undecided as to our future
plans in terms of publications available
within the Centre. We have
subsequently reduced the amount of
magazines we received over the year.
We are surprised and somewhat
disappointed that Mr. Hein has
responded in such a dramatic fashion.
Aside from the reported telephone quote
mentioned in his article, neither Mr.
Hein nor any of his staff have engaged
at any level with the Centre regarding
this matter. If any Centre member has
any view, either positive or negative on
this matter, they may contact Gordon
Pike (co-chair) by writing to him at:
Glasgow LGBT Centre, 11 Dixon
Street, Glasgow, G1 4AL. "
In fact, prior to phoning
Centre Manager Ruth Black for
comment, I had a lengthy
conversation in the Centre with
one of its Directors, Alastair
Smith, something of which Ruth
Black was well aware. Gordon Pike
manages to totally avoid the issue
of the Centre's inability (or
unwillingness) to control
children's access to so-called adult
content - something which other
LGBT community projects seem to
manage adequately whilst
ensuring that ScotsGay is freely
available to the adults who form
the vast majority of their users.
Has the Centre never heard of
a top shelf or "copies available on
request"?
Meanwhile, daily editions of
popular "newspapers" which
regularly promote homophobia
and sexism are freely available to
pollute the minds of children of all
ages on the Centre's premises.
Go fist your girlfriend or tie your
boyfriend to the bedpost and fuck
him… only don’t take a picture of it,
cos you could find yourself with a
three year stretch at Her Majesty’s
Pleasure and your name on the Sex
Offenders Register.
In April the government is due to
discuss plans to criminalise the
possession of extreme pornography.
Now before you decide this doesn’t
affect you and turn the page, this does
affect you. IT AFFECTS US ALL very
much, because essentially the
government are telling people how to
have sex. Even more staggering is that
these images don’t even have to be real
– included in the legislation is role
play, Photoshop images, or simply
images shot in a certain context that
the government decide ‘conveys a
realistic impression of fear, violence or
harm’!
Once upon a time, a man called
Graham Coutts killed his girlfriend,
though in Oct last year his conviction
was quashed as an ‘accident during
consensual sex’. It was revealed in court
that Coutts was a user of BDSM porn,
which started this campaign by the
dead girl’s mother. I get that she
didn’t want to admit to herself that
her little girl wasn’t quite so innocent
after all … But it’s ludicrous to blame
it on porn, especially when previous
partners of Coutts testified in court
that he participated in breath play
long before even getting an internet
connection. I mean it’s all very sad
that someone died due to unsafe
methodology – but does that mean the
rest of us should have to suffer?
Violent people can be triggered
into action by many things, including
pornography. But even the
government’s own consultation paper
could find no definite evidence that
the impact of violent porn creates
criminal reactions in viewers. Let’s face
it – abusers are cowards who will use
any scapegoat at their disposal. After
all, the majority of men who beat their
partners blame their behaviour on
alcohol. If society believes that it’s
porn, and not people, who cause
violence, the issue of how responsible
we are for our behaviour becomes a
real issue. Sexually violent material
may be a symptom of a sexually
violent society, but it’s certainly not
the cause.
On the other hand, it’s been
proven that rapists and abusers have
been taught repressive messages about
sex, masturbation and pornography,
and research shows that anti-porn
activism can actually exacerbate the
problems that lead to sexual assault
and abuse. Peter Tatchell of Outrage!
makes the point that ‘banning sexual
images only serves to fuel sex phobia, guilt
and anxiety … contributing to sexual hangups’.
Britain has the strictest
censorship laws in Europe, and the
highest number of violent sexual
assaults. Coincidence? You can’t
legislate against lust, and if people
aren’t allowed to have this
masturbatory outlet then how do they
carry out their fantasies? On a lone
woman walking at night? One could
go so far as to say that these images
help keep these people sated, and the
rest of us out of harm’s way.
Ultimately this legislation is
nothing more than a knee-jerk crowd
pleasing vote grabber. The grieving
mother came a-knocking, and here’s
the government’s redress. Film
Censorship expert Julian Petley very
aptly said in Oct 2006, ‘a violent porn
bill may address public anger but will fail to
deliver fair law.’
Vernon Coaker, Under-secretary of
State, was asked why he felt such
extreme measures were required, to
which he replied, ‘don’t blame us – we’re
just doing what we’re told.’ Now why does
that have such a familiar ring to it??
And who ‘told’ them? Churches, police
groups, charities and selected women’s
groups – a big bunch of fantasists and
self appointed bleeding heart dogooders.
Get over yourself!!! All these
people have done is adopt a Victorian
idea of women being permanent
victims, too mentally fragile to
encounter an offensive picture.
They’ve developed a definition of
womanhood every bit as oppressive as
the one their predecessors fought to
destroy.
Even Tony Blair doesn’t agree with
this legislation. In Sept 2006, he
released a statement saying that ‘…it is
not for the state to tell people that they
cannot choose a different lifestyle, for
example in issues to do with sexuality.’
It’s further argued that this
legislation will protect the people
featured. But it’s already illegal to
coerce/abuse someone into nonconsensual
activity. And most sites use
a small number of actors on a regular
basis, who reappear each time
miraculously recovered from their
serious/fatal injuries!
As a feminist, I believe this
legislation is deeply and inherently
wrong, and as an activist I have to
voice that belief. Censorship is a
dangerous tool that is primarily used
to suppress those who would
challenge oppression and victimise
minorities. Now feminism is about
freedom of speech, and here women’s
sexual choices deemed as ‘socially
unacceptable’ are coming under
attack, whether it be as a viewer or a
participant. Whatever happened to
pro-choice, whatever happened to ‘a
woman’s body – a woman’s right to
choose’? After all isn’t that what the
Human Rights Act is supposed to be
there for – to protect the free
expression of people who don’t
conform to the mainstream of society?
Women have the right to explore
their bodies and sexuality without
being subject to repression, a right
society has denied women for
centuries. Being sexual in front of a
camera can have a positive, confidence
building effect, producing feelings of
self awareness surrounding sexuality.
This legislation just reeks of a ‘nice
girls don’t …’ attitude. After all, porn
carries messages other than womenhating
…. For example sexual
adventure, sex for no reason other
than pleasure, public sex, group sex,
gay sex. Porn can be enjoyable and
empowering, rather than victimising,
view of sex.
I wonder just what exactly makes
our government think they have the
right to legislate people’s sexual
orientations out of existence? They
tried that pre-1980, when male
homosexuality in Scotland was illegal.
Watch out, ‘cos before you know it
they’ll have you banged up in the
Royal Edinburgh with electrodes
attached to your chest, ready to ECT
you all the way to vanilla-ville.
Now if you’re curious as to what
images exactly are going to be banned
under the new legislation, here is the
complete list:
Asphyxia: Restriction of breath.
Includes wearing a gimp mask
Blood Play: Sex during
menstruation; smearing of blood
Bondage: Binding someone into
an uncomfortable position for sexual
gratification, where withdrawal of
consent is not possible. Eg if they’re
gagged
Corporal Punishment: Inflicting
pain. Any activity leaving lasting
marks, bruises or scars – including a
heavy love bite
Fisting: Inserting a fist into the
vagina or anus
Insertion: Fucking which clearly
inflicts pain
Necrophilia: Staged sexual
intercourse with a corpse. Actual
necrophilia is already illegal.
Sado-Masochism: Inflicting
torture or humiliation/getting sexual
gratification from torture or
humiliation
Scat/Urolagnia: Enemas, water
sports, handling of excrement
Violence (including simulated):
Sexual violence, including role play of
sexual violence such as rape or
mutilation.
This means people who pose no
threat to society will now be
criminalized, completely undermining
communities such as BDSM and Goth
- an estimated 10% of the adult
population! And taking into account a
survey carried out by Kinsey which
showed that 42% of people have
participated in some form of corporal
punishment - from mild spanking
through to BDSM play – we’re hardly
talking about an insignificant
minority! But clearly these people’s
voices don’t count. The fact is that
BDSM sites allow individuals with
similar interests to share advice and
education on safe practices. Practices
such as minimising the risk of loss of
blood to extremities, and preventing
possible asphyxia. How will the
legislators feel when somebody dies as
a result of this legislation? Will they
accept that blood on their hands, or
will they dismiss these lives as
unimportant due to their ‘abhorrent’
sexual desires?
The government claims
mainstream films with violent scenes
won’t be affected, as violent material
will count as illegal only if
“Women have the
right to explore their
bodies and sexuality
without being subject
to repression, a right
society has denied
women for centuries”
pornographic – i.e primarily produced
for the purpose of sexual arousal. But
how is this to be distinguished from
low budget thrillers or horror films
which are often both sexually
suggestive and violent? Take Mel
Gibson’s ‘Passion of Christ’, which
features just about every perversion
listed above. It shows lumps of flesh
being torn out with steel barbed whips
and an extremely gruesome
mutilation/death scene. The whole
film is one big torture scene, yet it
came close to getting a Certificate 15!
The criteria are so subjective that they
become unenforceable and easily
abused.
A prime example of this was
demonstrated by Boots the Chemist,
who edited a couple’s honeymoon
photos by refusing to print a pic of a
piece of classical art taken in a gallery,
because it featured nudity. Their letter
of explanation stated, ‘Our staff are at
liberty not to print pictures they think are in
bad taste’. So you see what’s happening
here? We’re no longer talking about
illegal material or photographs of
abuse, but of ‘bad taste’. This is surely
a very dubious basis for passing
judgement!
In a fair society, there’s no
justification for censoring something
just because you don’t like it. What
kind of God Complex thinks they have
the right to be the moral majority for
the rest of us? We all have our own
moral hierarchy of acceptability
personal to ourselves. I personally
detest boxing. Two men beating each
other into pulp in the name of sport
makes me sick. Their injuries are
certainly not faked and do in many
cases lead to brain damage and
premature death. But that’s allowed,
cos no one’s wanking off to it. Just
when does the ‘distaste’ of the
majority justify the repression of a
minority? I say never!
Ultimately censorship is used by
those in power as a way to avoid
dealing with serious problems in
society, problems that require real
action. Just like they use ASBOs as a
band-aid solution in dealing with
yobs, dealing with the symptoms and
not the cause. What we need instead is
an accessible public forum for the
discussion of issues such as sexuality
in a fuller, more realistic context that
acknowledges the divisive forces in
society, as well as positive and accurate
sex education for young people.
The fact remains that those who
have power get to censor, and those
who lack power get silenced. Freedom
of speech is the ally of anyone who
seeks change, and as such freedom of
speech means you may have to see and
hear things that you don’t like. But if
censorship prevails, you will still see
and hear things you don’t like – and
be left without a voice to fight it.
These ‘pillars of moral rectitude’ came
after the gays first, now they’re coming
after the perverts. Who’s going to be
next?
Many dread the arrival of Feb.
Valentine’s Day falls mid-week this
year, so there won’t be many Cupid
inspired nights. I’m wise enough to
know that most of you just want to
veg till the spring, but I shall try to
tempt you all out with a few tasty
tits and bits!
We start with the welcome return
of Burly on Fri 2nd Feb. The boys are
still going strong, and all they ask is
that you respect the dress code and
enjoy the view! For all those who love
real men, Bearscots are meeting in
Revolver on Fri 9th Feb from 8pm.
At the moment these are informal
gatherings, but there are plans to
expand the events which may include
a sauna visit and charity night. The
group has increased in numbers and,
as always, the Revolver staff do their
best to make the night special.
On Sun 28th Jan Chocolate
Mondays will be singing in Bennets,
and the girls are back on top on Fri
2nd Feb with the lovely Sara.
The next Utter Gutter is on Sat
3rd Feb - this is a night which has
really gone from strength to strength.
It features a wide range of music and
personality, offering a real alternative
to what the scene normally serves.
The Women’s Library have
settled into their new home and are
offering a packed diary, starting with a
Creative Writing Workshop which was
held on Thu 25th Jan. There’s a
Women’s History event on Wed 7th
Feb at 7.30pm, led by Anni Donaldson
who will guide you through the
History of Women. Tips on tours with
Sandra Middleton will meet outside
the City Chambers at 6pm on Tue
13th Feb. All of these events are well
organised, informative and fun.
The Arches has a new mixed
exhibition on until Tue 27 Feb. This is
an exhibit of poster work called
Graphic Art Collective, a group
established to provide an easy outlet
for Scotland’s upcoming creative
talent, and a source of fresh
contemporary art prints. The Arches
are also showing more of their Future
Shorts on Sun 28th Jan and Sun 11th
Feb. Also showing is the coming of age
Sehnsucht Nach Meer (looking for more), a
beautifully shot film which tugs at the
heart strings.
Warhol has been going for a few
months now, with a welcoming
atmosphere and one of the few places
where food is available. They have a
quirky gallery space and also run a
number of events. I asked what ‘Gay
Friendly’ means, apparently it doesn’t
mean that the bar staff will oblige on
the table! It usually means that the
owner and staff are wise and mature
enough not to be concerned about
how your bread is buttered.
Last, but by no means least, The
Garage. It’s open till 3am, has a
pleasant coffee bar and helpful staff.
Glasgow now has more saunas
than any other place in Scotland so
will open the Edinburgh Filmhouse screening of
Calamity Jane
for
Waverley Care
Saturday 10th February at 1.30pm
Tickets are available from the
Filmhouse box office
It’s been a lean month on the
Edinburgh scene throughout Jan!
With the proprietors of our pubs
and clubs resorting to dining on
spam and leftover Xmas choccies,
it’s time to get back out there. As
our end of Jan pay cheque arrives,
we can all breathe a huge sigh of
relief and get enthused with all that
Feb has to offer.
Feb heralds the celebration of
pagan-originated Valentine’s Day, and
with it the make-up, break-up and reevaluation
of many relationships!
Society has dictated that those of us
lucky enough to have found our soulmate
– or simply just a wellintentioned
shag buddy – can
celebrate that union on Wed 14th Feb.
So get yourself to Clinton and waste
your money on yet another card and
maybe even a fluffy rag toy, just to
show you care! Or you could book a
table at Velvet’s Valentine’s Night of
Dinner and Dancing, put on just for the
occasion. Bookings are being taken
now for this sumptuous three course
feast, commencing at 7.30pm upstairs.
Non-diners can join the party
downstairs from 8pm, with resident
DJs Random and Leatherface on the
decks. Further entertainment will be
provided by Cindy the Sexy Salsa
Dancer, getting everyone in the mood
for grinding their hips. Velvet’s usual
date will still apply, this month falling
on Sat 3rd Feb. So get down to
Mariners at 9.30pm for 2-4-1 on all
drinks until 11pm!
The Troll
troll@scotsgay.co.uk
BearScots are returning to the hills!
From 16th-19th Mar they will be
ensconced in a large baronial
mansion on the outskirts of Keith
in Moray. This is a chance to relax
in beautiful and luxurious
surroundings and to make new
friends over a long three-day
weekend.
The total cost for the three nights
(including bear size portions of buns
and other comestibles) is £75. E-mail:
info@bearscots.org.uk or Tel: 0131-
600 0170 for further details.
I can also reveal that BearscotFest
2007 will take place in Edinburgh Fri
5th-Sun 7th Oct.
The new and exciting antithesis to
Velvet arrives this month in the form
of Zeus. Debuting at Mariners on Sat
10th Feb, this is a night for the boys.
Velvet DJs Random and Leatherface will
be joined by DJs Lick It and Lee o sare,
from 9.30pm–2am. Drinks promos
include 2-4-1 from 9.30–11pm, and
although gay girls are welcome when
accompanied by a male, this night is
primarily for the boys.
The bi-yearly Switchboard Ball
will be held on Sat 17th Feb at the
Assembly Rooms. The theme this time is
Rio Carnival, with DJ Trendy Wendy
and the Black Rose Ceilidh Band.
The Pink Paper Readers’ Awards
were announced for 2007, with Best
Scottish Club being awarded to CC
Blooms (No. 3) and Ego (No. 5). Best
Scottish pub was awarded to Habana
(No. 2) and Planet Out (No. 3).
Time to stop procrastinating and
put into action those New Year
resolutions you made! You have the
perfect opportunity on Sat 10th Feb as
the LGBT Centre for Health &
Wellbeing on Howe St are hosting an
Open Day. A range of community
groups will be showcasing different
ways you can get involved in our
community, from group activities to
volunteering opportunities. Among
others in attendance will be Lothian
Switchboard, Gay Men’s Health and
LGBT Youth.
And finally for those of us
interested in the women’s movement,
there’s a fantastic free exhibition on
The Caledonian Thebans are
supporting LGBT History Month 2007
by holding a Scottish themed LGBT
Quiz Night on Tue 27th Feb when
everyone is welcome to come along to
their not-too-serious quiz on LGBT
people, things and events. Grab a few
friends and come and share your
knowledge, learn stuff you never knew,
have a laugh and raise money for
charity. Prizes will be awarded to the
winning team - maximum 5 people per
team. The evening will kick off at 7pm
in Deep Blue and will cost £2 per
person.
Destination 2 Restaurant Bar -
the upmarket counterpart to next
door Destination - is to be the regular
venue for Forbidden Fruit - a monthly
night for women and their friends run
by Deborah and Sue. It will be on the
3rd Sat of each month with next
outing on Sat 17th Feb. The former
Sugo is rather different to the spit and
sawdust feel next door - think IKEA
and relaxed chill out living room.
women’s suffrage at Holyrood. ‘If I
Can’t Vote, I Don’t Count’, runs until
Mar. It’s both fascinating and
encouraging to see how far the
women’s movement has progressed
since then, without losing sight of
how much we still have to accomplish.
There’s a full food menu Noon-9pm
each day and it’s open Noon-1am.
Meanwhile, the original
Destination is open 7pm-1am (plus
5am-Noon on Fri and Sat). The Cabaret
Show (with a minimum of two drag
queens) is on Thu-Sat, Mon is a
Student Night with all drinks for £2
and Tue sees Competition Karaoke,
whilst Topping and Butch are
promised for Fri 2nd and Sat 3rd Mar.
Gordon at Habana tells me that a
new Quiz Night will be starting soon
on Thu nights. DJ G Star is on the
decks on Tue evenings for House of Sin.
Finally, if you’re scunnered with
Edinburgh, how about this job
opportunity in Glasgow? Gay Men’s
Health has funding for three full-time
Beth Robinson
beth@scotsgay.co.uk
Is it the sign of a good festive period
when you’re still making apologies
throughout Jan? If so, I had a great
time! My last set of apologies go to
the bouncers at OUT for my
drunkenness on the 30th Dec (no, I
couldn’t wait for New Year’s Eve!!).
That’s what happens when you go
out for lunch and don’t go home.
One pint too many me thinks!
So it’s the romantic time of the
year again with Valentine’s Day just
around the corner, and Dundee is
celebrating! If you can’t pull this
month then I think you need to
seriously reassess you tactics!
The Gauger is celebrating
Valentines Day a couple of days early,
with a party on Sat 10 Feb. There’s a
fancy dress theme too, so a good
excuse to bring out that Hallowe’en
Costume that’s only been worn once.
And of course a great excuse to see all
you boys dressed as ladies! Tickets are
£1, with music from 8pm. There will
be prizes for the best dressed so make
an effort! The Gauger still have
calendars available, £4 and available at
the bar. All the money raised is going
to a good cause. Ross will be DJ-ing on
Fri and Sat nights.
Brooklyn’s is celebrating on the
14th Feb with the now traditional Shag
Tag. If you need Dutch courage
beforehand, Brooklyn’s has free pool
and drinks promotions every day
between 5pm and 9pm. There’s
Karaoke on Wed, Fri and Sun, with
DJs on the intervening nights
including DJ Reilly on a Tue.
OUT is no doubt going to follow
on from Shag Tag in Brooklyn’s with
lots of drunken shenanigans in the
club (no doubt a few sickies will be
pulled on the 15th). The club is open
Wed to Sun11pm till late. OUT’s latest
addition is “Poptastic” every Sun; it’s
only £3 at the door with drinks
promos all night. An ideal way to get
over Fri and Sat hangovers!
Diversitay will be out on
Dundee’s scene on 10th Feb with
Valentine’s Day outreach (granted a
few days early). This is an ideal
opportunity to discover and support
your local LGBT group. So if you see
them out and about, go up and have a
chat. But be warned, they may try and
convince you to volunteer! Diversitay’s
help line is still running every Mon
night from 7-9pm, or you can E-mail:
contact@diversitay.org.uk or shuck
out their website at
www.diversitay.org.uk
Diversitay are also currently
setting up a ‘MySpace’ and ‘bebo’ site,
so look out for them and add them to
your friends list.
A quick mention to DV8
Dundee’s LGBT youth group. DV8 is a
youth group for young people under
25 who have issues with their
sexuality, or with the sexuality of a
member of their family. It’s a safe and
friendly environment where you can
meet other young people and discuss
issues affecting the LGBT community
and their families. They also have
guest speakers from the police, health
and voluntary sectors. For more info,
E-mail Marley at marl12580@aol.com
Abertay University LGBT Group
is still going strong and meet on the
1st and 3rd Mon of each month at
7pm, in the cinema room on the 3rd
floor of the Student Centre. It’s open
to students from both universities and
is currently planning events for
upcoming months. If you’re a student,
joining your LGBT society is the ideal
way to make new friends and get
support from like minded people.
Dundee University LGBT Group
seems to have really taken off - despite
being only a few months old, it’s
already got over 50 members. Like its
counterpart at Abertay, it’s an ideal
way to make friends and have a few
drinks along the way.
See you all next month!
FILM: A Soap (En Soap)
Tue 20th Feb at 6pm GFT
The whole world seems hungry for a
regular fix of soap opera but what
happens when you take a different
approach to the sex, lies and silly
storylines of such television staples?
That’s what Pernille Fischer Christensen
has done in this emotional tale that
follows a young woman who dumps her
boyfriend and moves into a grotty flat
where her neighbours include a lonely
pre-op transsexual who spends his days
watching television soaps and servicing
gentleman callers.
FILM: The Blossoming Of Maximo
Oliveros
(Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros)
Thu 22nd Feb at 6pm CCA
In the slums of Sampaloc, twelve yearold
Maximo is a budding drag queen
who tends house for his father and two
older brothers. The family is mired in
crime but the older men are protective
towards him. Then handsome, devout
Christian Victor joins the local police
force. Maximo develops a huge crush on
him and the affection appears to be
mutual. The torn loyalties and broken
hearts that ensue form the basis of an
extraordinary warm, complex and deeply
moving melodrama.
FILM: The Dying Gaul
Sun 18th at 8.45pm GFT
Playwright Craig Lucas (Longtime
Companion, Prelude To A Kiss) makes a
stylish directorial debut with this twisted
tale of secrets and betrayals. Grieving
screenwriter Robert has written a
brilliant script inspired by his lover’s
recent death from AIDS. A film executive
offers to buy it for a million dollars on
one condition; Robert must agree to
make the love story heterosexual. The
temptation becomes unbearable
especially when the glamorous film
executive and his wife prove to be so
seductive.
FILM: Summer In Berlin (Sommer vorm
Balkon)
Fri 23rd Feb at 8.45 GFT
One of the most admired directors in
current German cinema, Andreas Dresen
tells a touching tale of the friendship that
binds two women through the tough
times they endure in the reunified Berlin.
Nike (Uhl) is a nurse in an old folks’
home. Katrin (Friedrich) is devoted to
her teenage son Max. When Nike
embarks on a doomed relationship with
a trucker, Katrin turns to drink to blot out
the traumas of her life. The result is a
gentle, compassionate study of the
extraordinary drama in ordinary lives.
FILM: The Wayward Cloud (Tian Bian Yi
Duo Yun)
Wed 21st Feb at 8.15pm CCA
Taiwan has been hit by an acute drought,
the citizens are hot and horny and
finding uses for watermelons that you
had never thought possible. Porn star
Lee bathes in the rooftop water tank of
his apartment block. Chen has just
returned from Paris and cannot open her
suitcase. Survival is hard but loneliness
is even more difficult to bear in this
amazingly idiosyncratic love story
featuring explicit sex scenes and some
of the campest musical numbers since
Busby Berkeley retired. A cult in the
making.
Breaking Up
How to do it... and how not to
lifestyle
Mark Corrigan
mark@scotsgay.co.uk
Let’s be honest, at some point we
have all dumped somebody in a
horrific and insensitive manner,
and we walk away from the debris
with a slight shackle of guilt but no
real perspective on the
repercussions of our actions.
However, there are certain ways
that are socially acceptable to dump
someone. I’m an advocate of the old
fashioned face to face meeting in
public. The reason is simple. A one on
one meeting can lower the risk of a
dramatic scene, which allows an
amount of dignity to be retained by
both parties. Shrewd perhaps, but
believe me, a dumped gay boy can be
like a tiger backed into a corner. It’s
best to do it in the open so if he does
attack there are witnesses. The premise
is that he is too concerned with his
image management to damage a well
groomed reputation by lashing out in
a public environment. Even a phone
call, though still impersonal, can grant
some form of closure.
However there are specific ways
you should never be dumped, like the
cowardly fashion of, let’s say, via a text
message. “I need some space so I’m going
away. I think if we see each other things will
be said that neither of us means, I can’t give
you what you want. I’m sorry…”
As I read this text my body is
rendered frozen with fear and anxiety.
It was as if an octopus had clambered
up my body and with icy tendrils,
numbed each limb and turned my
stomach like a tombola, only there
was no prize winning raffle to pull
out, just that sense of utter loss and
uselessness.
So this is what it feels like to get
dumped. ‘Wow, this kinda hurts…’
I read somewhere, I believe it was
in the Metro newspaper (a guilty
indulgence relished by the intellectual
anarchist in me and reviled by the
Times reading ponce I often portray in
polite society), that every person
should be subject, at least once in their
lives to the ritual of the involuntary
break-up. Also known as getting
dumped, chucked, rejected or flung,
whichever terminology you choose, it
makes no difference to the person at
the receiving end.
So was it true that everybody
should be dumped at least once in
their lives? This was my first
experience of being dumped, hence the
birth of this article.
I hope that dumpers everywhere
can understand their actions, and the
dumpees can find some solace and
understand that they are not alone -
that their pain is not significant to
just them, but is shared by everyone
that has found themselves in that
situation.
For those of you that have never
had the misfortune of being on the
receiving end of the barbed dumping
stick, here are a few insights into how
it feels to be handed your P45 and told
that your current employment as the
world’s happiest man has been
terminated with immediate effect.
It’s like the world has been swept
from beneath your feet, and you find
yourself vulnerable and exhausted
with angst. In those dark moments
you don’t realise that an enemy
approaches, his name is Denial. He
has decided to
be your pimp
and you find
yourself broken
at his feet
begging to be
his bitch, so as
not to face the
reality that the
person you
think you love
has rejected
you.
Denial is
the tool of the desperate fantasist that
is unwilling or unable to acknowledge
reality. In his most wicked game,
Denial makes you believe that you can
surmount the insurmountable and
claim back your prize man with crazy
romantic gestures that they don’t
want or understand, and fail to even
acknowledge.
Your lame and ill informed
attempts to win him back eventually
drive that no good pimp daddy Denial
out (along with any sense of dignity
that you had left), and reality sets in
with a ball tugging, arse fisting
painful and
devastating
truth. You’ve
lost.
As sad as
that story may
be, I plead that
you restrain
those tears
because once
defeat has been
grudgingly
accepted, we
find that we can actually continue to
live beyond the bubble of dreamy
existence we made for ourselves whilst
in a relationship. And herein lays the
tragedy, it’s not that the bubble has
burst but rather in the uncertainty of
what is beyond the illusion we created.
We then reflect and mourn our
loss. The memories you can’t drive
out, no matter how willing to help our
old friends are, such as Class A’s and
that favourite Eastern European
immigrant, Smirnoff. (Now you’re
talking my language - Ed.)
“A dumped gay boy
can be like a tiger
backed into a corner.
It’s best to do it in the
open so if he does
attack there’s
witnesses. ”
“Would I get back
with my ex?
I would rather have a
wank in the desert
with broken glass as
lubricant, thank you
very much! ”
The repercussions of being a
dumpee vary from person to person,
some people see their ex in everyone’s
faces, every love song heard in a bar
can be made to find meaning to an
aspect of your failed partnership. You
may go for walk or sit in the park to
be away from the flat and its
reminders of the happier times spent
with your estranged. You seem to be
bombarded with visual torment of
jovial couples taking strolls, engaging
in public displays of affection and
generally rubbing your face in their
bile-inducing
bliss. Upon
seeing them,
you find
personal insult
in their
happiness,
adding to an
already
overfilled pot of
emotional
turmoil that is
flirting with the
idea of erupting.
Why are they everywhere? There is
an explanation. Now I’m no theorist,
but bear with me on this. In
EastEnders, when the character Sonia
Jackson handed her child to the
adoption authorities, she quickly
regretting her decision, runs to Albert
Square’s thriving market place and
what happens? Lo and behold loving
mothers and their babies pop-up in all
directions as if to taunt our
protagonist. How very insensitive I
hear you cry. The law of the soap
dictates that when you have lost
something and you desperately want it
back, the
protagonist will
have to endure
being
confronted with
what they
themselves have
lost and we as
viewers are
along for the
sadistic ride.
This law could
be applied to
almost every scenario of loss in the
soap. Anyway, my point is that when
we have lost something sacred to us,
we will find the echoes of it
everywhere we look. It’s a way of
tormenting ourselves, part of our
destructive and self critical nature. I
found I broke myself down in every
way, analysed my character to the
point that there was no more to
antagonise. I was the lowest I could be
until I realised there was nothing I
could do or change about myself and
that it wasn’t my entire fault.
I had been dumped by a text
message, and therefore the
relationship ended like a severed limb,
messy with bits still clinging on. But
in just a manner of weeks and a few rebound
bonks later (I use the word few
liberally as I actually mean lots), I
found the wounds I was licking began
to close.
Some people need to feel pain in
order to feel at all. Often a boyfriend
will take their anxieties out on you
because they aren’t equipped to deal
with their own problems or issues. You
may find yourself a scapegoat for
insecurities that should, could and
may have been resolved had you
worked together. If you put the effort
in and they still rejected you, you can
walk away from the debris unashamed
of your actions and with enough
dignity to be proud that you were the
one that tried. I take great solace that I
know who I am and I don’t need a
man to complete me, a school of
thought which is the product of being
dumped.
It is a strange sensation to see how
the other half lives. I have friends that
get dumped all the time and they cope
just fine. I expect it is because they
don’t allow themselves to invest their
emotions too readily. Consider that a
lesson learned. I suspect getting
dumped for the first time is rather like
getting tonsillitis: when it first strikes
it sneaks up and wipes you out, but
the second round you sense it coming
prepare yourself.
Which brings me full circle to my
conclusion that a person should be
dumped at least once in their life. I
find myself reluctant to agree but I’m
afraid I have to. The lessons learned
are tools that are important to grasp. I
can’t say that I’m happy to have been
dumped, but it certainly has made me
stronger and more focused about the
kind of future I want for myself. Use
the pain and shame of your mistakes
to drive you forward and don’t dwell
on the pettiness of revenge - as the
best vengeance is to do well in your
endeavours; prove your abilities only
to yourself.
If you were to ask me now, would
I get back with my ex if the
opportunity arose, my reply would be
simple - I would rather have a wank in the
desert with broken glass as lubricant, thank
you very much!
There are no hard feelings and we
are still good friends but I know more
about myself post relationship than I
did whilst in one. I’m taking my
experience and moving on from this
point.
I’ve learned a valuable lesson,
albeit harshly, but God damn I’m
grateful I’ve learned it young.
Are Scots finally cool with sex? Last
September in Edinburgh the
Scottish National Gallery of
Modern Art managed to erect
photographs of Robert
Mapplethorpe’s depictions of S&M
sex.
His floral portraits had his camera
touching on every wet, vulva-like lip
and crevice of the ovary and dribbled
tantalisingly along the flesh-like
stamen of each magnificent floral
erection, poised in various states of
sexual arousal without a hint of
outrage. Moral conservatives ran out
of the necessary steam to lay their
concerns on the laps of Catholic
reporters in the Scottish press.
And there was more! Po-faced
monarchs were brushed aside at the
National Portrait Gallery in
Edinburgh recently to show two-floors
of naked flesh. (Adults could
accompany children under 12). An
excited art historian, Professor
Duncan MacMillan, enthused in The
Sunday Times Scotland: “Standards
have changed so much that shows like The
Naked Portrait are perfectly possible. The
types of images which people see on the
television and in the newspapers are
scandalous compared to 30 years ago. The
nude has lost its power to shock.”
Hmm! Open the pages of selfprofessed
Glasgow-based “family
newspaper”, The Sunday Mail and
dip into ‘safe’ gay, home-crimping TV
guru’s, Justin and Colin’s ‘Right at
Home’ supplement. Readers, over
Christmas, were assailed by the sight
of an advert featuring (gasp)! a naked
man running into the sea. Steady
though! A quarter-of-an-inch of naked
backside was blacked out. It promoted
the delights of buying overseas
property with Let’s Live Abroad! in a
country where its prime minister, José
Luis Rodríguez Zapatero stuck two
fingers up at the Catholic Church to
guarantee equality to all its citizens,
where there are naked beaches all
along its coasts and erotic mags are for
sale in corner shops alongside Haribo
sweeties. All the same, this is clearly
not the sort of crack Glaswegians like!
Censorship is frequently covert
and disceptive. When the ad was due
to appear on Glasgow’s buses, agency
Viacom quietly hinted to Let’s Live
Abroad! they might want to cover the
sight of this exposed bottom with a
wee pair of trunks, thereby passing
onto the company the responsibility of
censoring. A good first option. When
Let’s Live Abroad! threatened instead
to expose the censorship with a black
patch and the word ‘CENSORED’
clearly written across it, the story was
picked up by Glasgow’s Evening
Times. Viacom backed down, the
swimmer wriggled out of his
PhotoShop trunks and Glasgow lived
to see another day.
On Scotland’s new found liberties,
The Sunday Times Scotland’s Gillian
Bowditch was also in a frenzied state
of celebration in Stirling. Vodkafuelled
juices were surging amongst a
few hundred other lustful females to
watch a theatre production of ‘The
Foolmonty’. With a healthy amount of
sexual energy and not afraid of it, Ms
Bowditch enjoyed watching a bunch of
builders, having devested themselves
of their jackets incrested with the logo
of Stirling Council’s building services
department, prancing around in
nothing more than Jimmy bunnets
and G-strings. Well, OK, the line-up
was 44 year old, 16 stone John Ewing;
25 year old, 14 stone Chris McFadden;
38 year old, 17 stone Alan Morrison;
24 year old, 12 stone Andrew Wilson
and 47 year old, 26 stone brickie Jim
Berry, but it’s a start!
And aren’t we proud of Scottish
rugby champ, Sean Lamont who
graces one of Stade Français’s famous
‘Dieux du Stade’ nude calendars? “It is
a pose that would have been unthinkable in
the macho world of Scottish rugby a decade
ago”, declared a surpringly upbeat
Gillian Bowditch.
Surprisingly, it’s not so much
naked pleasure as moral censorship
that appears to be the subject of
discussion over cups of tea and
Creamed Fancies back at Glasgow’s
LGBT Centre. Directors Gordon Pike,
Alastair Smith, Jean Monaghan,
Gladys Paterson and their manager,
Ruth Black make an altogether
different line-up. According to her
profile on the Glasgow LGBT Centre’s
website, Ms Black is a mother. She also
has a daughter and a 13-year-old son.
You can also read about this in
CentrePoint, their magazine which
she edits. She also runs a lesbian
mothers’ group here. You can read
about that too. As the Centre’s
manager, she is also quite vocal about
banning Scotland’s longest-running
gay magazine, ScotsGay from all parts
of the Centre, including its café; a
punishment not even considered for
The Daily Record whose
homophobic credentials matched Der
Stürmer during the repeal of the
notorious Section 28. “We consider the
sexual content of (ScotsGay) inappropriate
for the Centre,” she told this magazine.
“We have to take into account that people as
young as thirteen are using the place”.
I suppose we should be thankful
she decided not to torch them like
copies of Jahrbuch fur Sexuelle
Zwischenstufen in front of Berlin’s
‘gay centre’ in 1933. Frankly, there’s
not much else in the way of precedents
when it comes to gay centre’s banning
gay magazines. As one of the Centre’s
users told me. “One day, ScotsGay just
wasn’t there!” Director, Alastair Smith,
working in the café, was dismissive.
“We’ve got to consider all users of the
Centre”. He too does not approve of
adverts from sex workers and explicit
personal ads (which, compared to gay
magazines like QX, distributed freely
around London, might’ve been
penned by Beatrix Potter). As one
Centre user told me: “Pinch yourself.
You’re not dreaming. It’s 2007 and we have
the equivalent of Glasgow’s publicly-funded
gay centre run by Mrs Valerie Riches’s
Family and Youth Concern! Halle-fuckinglujah”!
ScotsGay’s publisher, John Hein
has been more circumspect: “I have no
objection to minors using the place as long
as adults aren’t asked to change their
behaviour to accommodate the hangups of
their parents”.
Also based in Glasgow, The
Scottish Daily Mail have been
running a campaign, whipping up
incitement to hatred of gays. (“NOW
GAYS ARE GIVEN RIGHTS TO
CHILDREN. Children from broken homes
will be sent to live with gay couples…”;
“Now the Tartan Army face their biggest
opponent yet after football fans became the
latest group to be targeted by the gay rights
lobby” and “Gay agenda in the NHS is a
sick joke” etc., etc). This was part of a
campaign orchestrated by militant
religionists to draw attention to their
efforts seeking exemption from
equality legislation. So-called ‘equality’
minister Ruth Kelly – a member of the
sinister Catholic Opus Dei
organisation – buckled under the
pressure. What The Scottish Daily
Mail journalists will make of
Glasgow’s LGBT Centre’s latest
contribution to gay culture will be
anyone’s guess. I can imagine them
banging their sticks on their
Axminster, spluttering about the
politically-correct gay lobby banning
their gay magazines from their own
publicly-funded premises before
bemoaning the loss of Tennents Lager
Lovelies and all that Scotland stood
for. What a laugh! And it is… Funny.
Almost.
Ruth Black’s (hopefully brief)
soirées into sexual politics found her
siding with The Scottish Daily Mail’s
notoriously militant Catholic
propagandist, ‘home affairs editor’,
Graham Grant: “Gay rights MSPs accept
award named after child-sex monster”. The
award was given to Green MSP Patrick
Harvie and Lib Dem MSP Margaret
Smith. The award commemorates the
late Ian Dunn who has been
continuely crucified by the media for
co-founding and offering a post restante
address for the seventies pædophile
organisation, the Pædophile
Information Exchange, (PIE). Some
members of PIE went on to be charged
with “corrupting public morals” for
attempting to change the law. Ian
Dunn has been recognised for
founding the Scottish Minorities
Group which campaigned successfully
to legalise homosexuality in Scotland.
Tapping into that old ‘friends in high
places’ chestnut, Grant’s ‘report’
feared “revelations that MSPs have
received the awards will fuel concerns over
links between gay campaign groups and
Holyrood”.
Grant added: “In 1997, (Ian Dunn)
condemned police over a camera
surveillance operation in public toilets in
Stirling which led to several gay men being
charged – even though the investigation also
revealed that some men had sex with a 13-
year-old”.
Mr Grant forgot to mention that
police were happy to stand by and
watch this gay youth pick up men in
this way during his summer holidays
so they could secure 11 arrests which
resulted in three attempted suicides,
two of which were ultimately
successful. Ruth Black’s extraordinary
contibution to the story was: “Anything
that sexualises the gay community in this
way is unhelpful”.
Excuse me? We are sexualised
from the moment we open our gay
mouths and I am in no hurry to be desexualised!
Grant insisted: “Last month,
MSPs pushed through laws allowing gay
adoption, despite the Executive’s own
consultation showing that 90 per cent of
Scots were against it”.
When was this? I’m sorry, but that
was a referendum I must’ve missed! In
the same paper on another page, the
tireless Graham Grant went on to
suggest the huge influx of Catholicvoting
Poles would “punish Labour
candidates for their ‘anti-family’ policies at
the Holyrood elections”. Not so fast,
matey! Catholic militants are selfishly
putting their interests before those of
children by blackmailing the
Government, theatening to close all its
adoption agencies if it doesn’t grant
them opt-outs from equality
legislation. Even the most stupid can
now see the importance of secularism
in government! With the Scottish
media having suffocated under the
powerful grip of religion for so long, it
is indeed refreshing to see the door
now wide open to leave comments
under their stories on the Internet.
Militant religionists are being
challenged by a burgeoning secularism
like I’d never have thought possible! I
hope the politicians are sitting up and
taking notice! At last, we are a
majority!
Unlike ScotsGay, The Sunday
Mail still enjoys a place in the Centre
for visitors to enjoy its moral
chastisements. From the same stable
as The Daily Record, its content has
consistently challenged sexual
openess. “MAKE PORN A HATE
CRIME”, headlined political editor,
Brian Lironi’s piece of self-flagellation
over a “sex abuse summit” planned for
February. It was an opportunity
militant feminists would be exploiting
to ensure mens’ magazines were pulled
off newsagent’s shelves for good.
Described without compunction by
Lironi as “Scotland’s leading experts”,
they were none other than the
notorious Scottish Women Against
Pornography (SWAP) led by Catherine
Harper of the Scottish Women’s
Coalition. She told The Sunday Mail:
“The message of all pornography is that
women secretly wish to be raped and abused
and enjoy the treatment they receive. We
view pornography as sexual hatred in the
same way racist material is regarded as
incitement to racial hatred… It is about
providing a more equal society and a safer
place for women and children”. To grasp
the amount of debate that we can
expect going into this nonsense, we
can take The Mail’s quote from Elaine
Smith MSP as read: “We need to hear
from academics who work in this field
about whether they think pornography is
harmful and how serious a problem it might
be. We don’t expect any of them to say it is a
good thing so the next question will be what
we can do about it”.
Game set and match to the ladies
in the pinched whalebone corsets,
then!
The last thing Scotland needs is
more censorship. And certainly not in
a space set aside for the very people
who have been the most damaged by
inappropriate moral adjudications and
misguided prudery. So enjoy ScotsGay
while you can; if you can get it. It
might not exactly be your cup of tea.
But at least it’s free. In more ways than
one!
Escort Agency Proves Popular
Versatile Escorts may only have
been in business for four months,
but their reputation for honest,
responsible and reliable service
has been a hit with Scots
customers.
For the owner of Versatile Escorts
Ltd has several years of
experience in customer facing
roles and understands the need
for his agency to deliver only the
highest standards.
Peter’s new agency is breath of
fresh air. Clients are spoken to
with respect. At £120 an hour, I
think that’s the very least you
deserve! Calls are always
returned, and in the unlikely event
you cannot be helped on this
occasion, there is no hyperbole,
you are told and helped to find
something which works, for you,
our customer.
Versatile’s escorts are of all ages,
from 18 upwards and in all parts
of the country. Unlike some
agencies, all escorts are personally
interviewed - a nice job if you can
get it.
