SCOTTISH SCREEN FEATURE FILMS CHAMPIONING INVESTMENT IN SCREEN PRODUCTION
Scottish Screen is Scotland’s national film office, supporting
all aspects of the screen industry and screen culture in
Scotland. Our Production & Development department
provides funding to home-grown filmmaking talent and
introduces their work to audiences around the world.
Scotland has been producing first-class feature films for
many decades, and there has been a huge increase in
activity in the last few years. Some highlights of the recent
past are included in this brochure, and many of these
filmmakers are graduates of our short film programmes.
Feature production has a key role in Scottish film business
and talent development. Central to this are the various
schemes we operate with partners including Scottish
Enterprise, BBC Scotland, Scottish TV and Grampian TV.
During 2003, we ran a low-budget feature film scheme,
New Found Films, in partnership with Scottish TV and
Grampian TV. This produced two ninety-minute films,
(Blinded and Afterlife), with an approximate budget of
£300k each, and was extremely successful in giving new
filmmakers the opportunity to make that all-important first
feature. At the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, we launched a new
low budget film scheme in association with the BBC Scotland
& BBC Films. This scheme will produce three £1.2m films
over 3 years.
Scottish Screen also actively encourages international
collaborations to the benefit of the Scottish industry, and
many of the titles in this brochure are international coproductions.
Blinded tells a story of obsession and
murder, loosely based on Emile Zola’s
Thérèse Raquin, and retold in a modern day
setting.
Blinded is a brooding psychological thriller,
starring Peter Mullan (best actor Cannes for
My Name Is Joe); Jodhi May (best actress
Cannes for A World Apart) and Anders W
Berthelson (best actor European Film Award
for Mifune).
With vintage performances from the awardwinning
cast, Blinded explores the darker
side of sexual desire, proving how hard it is
to see the truth - even when the facts are
right in front of your eyes.
