Convention <strong>of</strong> 1949. After show<strong>in</strong>g how <strong>the</strong> Convention was put to <strong>the</strong> test dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Korean <strong>War</strong>, <strong>the</strong> research exam<strong>in</strong>es steps taken to improve guidance and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for<br />

servicemen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1950s and early 1960s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Man’s Code <strong>of</strong> Conduct and <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plans outl<strong>in</strong>ed to implement it. Us<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation as background, <strong>the</strong> research turns towards <strong>the</strong> specific tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our<br />

servicemen received immediately prior to and dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong> <strong>War</strong>. Next, <strong>the</strong><br />

research exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>of</strong> religion; communication; <strong>in</strong>genuity and imag<strong>in</strong>ation; and<br />

organization and leadership <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g exactly what <strong>the</strong> POWs experienced and if<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g prepared <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas. Lastly, <strong>the</strong> research looks at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong><br />

<strong>War</strong>’s immediate aftermath and what recommendations were made to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong><br />

effectiveness <strong>of</strong> service preparation.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> this project, <strong>the</strong> research is limited to those prisoners <strong>of</strong> war<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>in</strong> North <strong>Vietnam</strong>, most notably at <strong>the</strong> Hoa Lo Prison, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>famous “Hanoi<br />

Hilton.” It does not <strong>in</strong>clude any <strong>in</strong>formation concern<strong>in</strong>g those POWs <strong>in</strong> South <strong>Vietnam</strong>,<br />

Laos, or Cambodia. <strong>The</strong> research focuses on <strong>the</strong> captivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prisoners (i.e.,<br />

resistance) and <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g received prior to <strong>the</strong>ir be<strong>in</strong>g taken captive—it does not<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude analysis <strong>of</strong> survival, evasion, or escape methods, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, or examples. <strong>The</strong><br />

focus is primarily aimed at Air Force prisoners <strong>of</strong> war, though some <strong>in</strong>formation is<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded about POWs from o<strong>the</strong>r services.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Geneva Convention. In <strong>the</strong> aftermath <strong>of</strong> World <strong>War</strong> II, <strong>the</strong> Geneva<br />

Convention met <strong>in</strong> 1949 to consider ways <strong>of</strong> alleviat<strong>in</strong>g victims’ suffer<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g war.<br />

<strong>The</strong> overall goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1949 Convention was to improve <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> prisoners <strong>of</strong><br />

war. <strong>The</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple was that once a soldier was removed from <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />
