A day of celebration for
Texas A&M-San Antonio
By Kiko Trinidad-Colon
In a special inauguration ceremony
at the San Antonio College
McAllister Auditorium
Tuesday morning, Dr. Maria
Hernandez Ferrier was officially
appointed the first president of
Texas A&M-San Antonio by the
Texas A&M University System
Board of Regents.
Dr. Ferrier invited dozens
of local women who, like her,
earned a doctorate degree. The
doctoral graduates marched solemnly
down the aisle, and each
took a seat onstage alongside
Ferrier and the Board of Regents.
She explained she invited the
accomplished women to make
a point.
“I thought it was important for
me to demonstrate the power of
education,” said Ferrier. “It is
the key that will open the doors
of opportunity for our children.”
It has been a long road for
Ferrier, but well worth the hardship.
“It hasn’t been easy, but it
has been extremely rewarding,”
she said.
Ferrier served as interim president
of A&M-San Antonio since
June 2009, and became the sole
finalist for the position Jan. 21,
after an extensive nationwide
search. She was confirmed after
a mandated waiting period, during
which Ferrier met with local
community, education and civic
leaders.
The new president began
working with the university
as executive director when the
institution was operating as a
system center of A&M-Kingsville.
Under her leadership, the
system center accomplished key
objectives, including the approval
of the master plan for the
permanent campus, the passing
of funding legislation and the
growth of academic programs
and enrollment. Last May, Senate
Bill 629 established A&M
San Antonio as a stand-alone
institution.
“The regents and I realized we
already had the right person in
place,” stated Morris E. Foster,
chair of the Board of Regents.
“Our unanimous decision shows
the confidence we all have in her
to continue to guide this new
university through these trying
economic times. Dr. Ferrier’s
dedication and experience have
been and will continue to be the
right combination to lead this
university.”
Dr. Ferrier... (Continued
from page 3)
The Honorable Regent Gene
Stallings echoed that sentiment
in his keynote speech at the inauguration
Tuesday.
“Everyone has a definition for
leadership, but, I think it means
getting someone to do something
they don’t want to do, but that
will benefit the entire organization.
Dr. Ferrier embodies that
ideal,” said Stallings.
A native of San Antonio’s
West Side, Ferrier returned to
school to earn her undergraduate
degree at 30, with the help
and inspiration of her mentor
and employer at the time, Carol
Tuell.
Ferrier earned minimum wage
as a teacher’s aide while managing
her personal life as the
single parent of two children.
With Tuell’s encouragement, she
enrolled at San Antonio College
and ultimately earned a Bachelor
of Arts in speech and a Master
of Education in guidance and
counseling from Our Lady of
the Lake.
“I never viewed college as an
option,” said Ferrier. “I grew up
in a very loving home, however,
we never spoke of attending
college, and it just never really
came up.”
Education proved to be exhilarating
and sustaining to Ferrier.
She persisted and earned
a doctorate in educational administration
from Texas A&M
University.
Her hard work culminated
in several appointments at the
national level. In 2002, President
George W. Bush named
Ferrier director of the Office
of English Language Acquisition,
Language Enhancement
and Academic Achievement
for Limited English Proficient
Students at the US Department
of Education. During her tenure
at the Dept of Ed, she rose to
deputy undersecretary and then
to assistant deputy secretary,
serving as the principal advisor
to the Secretary of Education on
all matters pertaining to students
of limited English proficiency
and Hispanics in general.
Ferrier serves on the Hispanic-
Serving Institutions Advisory
Council for Hispanic Association
of Colleges and Universities
(HACU), a group of college and
university presidents committed
to furthering the interests of
Hispanic serving institutions.
She also serves on the Southwest
Independent School District
Foundation Board of Directors,
Lackland Air Force Base Joint
Land Use Study (JLUS) Executive
& Advisory Committee,
KLRN-TV Public Broadcasting
System Board of Directors,
and The Greater San Antonio
Chamber of Commerce Board
of Directors.
Her reputation and dedication
to education gets high marks
from all those who work with
her, including her new employers.
“Dr. Ferrier is an accomplished
and dynamic leader,
committed to the students, faculty
and staff of this university.
As its first president, she will
enhance the excellence in education
and continue the growth of
enrollment to achieve our goal
of 25,000 students by 2025,”
said Chancellor Michael D.
McKinney.
Ferrier’s vision includes
working closely with city and
regional leaders to ensure that
A&M-San Antonio will be a
premier institution, which is also
accessible and inclusive, and
boasts a top-rate faculty.
“We will continue to encourage
San Antonio students to take
advantage of our local colleges
and to develop academic programs
that are innovative and
relevant to today’s business,
technology and educational
needs,” said Ferrier.

Community gets to vote in VIA’s first-ever online video contest
By Angela Covo
angela.covo@gmail.com
My Ride is VIA’s first-ever online
video contest. The competition,
which closed on Sept 23, is now
in the judging phase, and everyone
gets to vote once a day for his or her
favorite video online.
The whole point of the contest is to
give riders the opportunity to convey
a positive message about riding the
bus in San Antonio -- in two minutes
or less.
Jefferson High School senior Noel
Robles, 18, responded to the call.
Noel studies filmmaking with Adam
Rocha at the San Antonio Independent
School District, and wants to
build a career making documentaries.
The young San Antonio native
explains his belief that real life needs
to be documented. “I like seeing my
ideas play out on the screen instead
of just in my head,” he added.
Noel met Rocha, his filmmaking
instructor, through a cousin, Benny
Aguirre, and was instantly inspired
by the craft. Rocha, director of the
San Antonio Film Festival, has
worked with hundreds of students at
SAISD and at San Antonio College.
Thrilled to have the chance to
work with a professional like Rocha
– Noel wasted no time and started
filmmaking with him two years ago.
“Seeing how everybody is able to
create something from an idea is a
big part of the reason I’m interested
in filmmaking,” Robles said.
Telling real stories is also an important
aspect of filmmaking Robles
wants to explore even more.
“I made the VIA film because
I saw the flyer and I like the idea
of documentaries – real life versus
made up scenes. It gave me a great
opportunity to see if my work could
have a positive impact on the community,”
he explained.
The winner of the contest will get
his or her choice of an Apple Ipad
or a $500 gift card, not to mention
the exposure of making an awardwinning
film.
To make the film, Robles decided
to tell the real life stories of three
people who take separate routes
on the VIA bus system and depend
on those routes every day to get to
school, work and home.
The final name of the short film is
“Which Route will you take?”
Whatever happens, Robles plans
to go to the film school at SAC and
continue studying under Rocha.
After completing the film program
at SAC, he plans to consider several
schools to finish his degree,
including the University of Southern
California.
Melissa Mesquiti, Noel’s mother,
is very excited for Noel.
“I’m proud of my son, he’s a bright
kid. He’s also a good role model for
his brother and sister – their Dad
passed away when Noel was just six
years old,” she said.
Mesquiti recently married and
Noel loves his step-dad, but for a
long time Mesquiti was a single
Mom. She said without a doubt, Noel
is a great role model for his brother,
John, 13 and his sister, Yvonne, 14.
“He’s [Noel] had it a little rough
– and he sets a great example for his
brother and his sister,” she said. To
be without a father is very hard – to
become a great man without that
influence in his life says a lot. I
couldn’t be more proud,” Mesquiti
told La Prensa.
Noel’s younger brother, John, is
already excited about taking filmmaking
classes at Jefferson.
The judging period ends Oct. 6,
and online viewers decide 50 percent
of the video battle. To see Noel’s
video and all the entries, visit viainfo.
net/VideoContest/VideoList.aspx
Remember, Noel needs your
vote to win and get much needed
exposure.
hopes his film makes the cut. (Courtesy photo)

Café College ready to serve up higher education
By Cristina Blackwell
cblackwell@laprensasa.com
Dignitaries and education leaders
gathered to help launch Café College,
a one-stop counseling service
that offers strategies for prospect
students to best manage choices,
finances, knowledge and skills
needed to pursue higher education
goals.
As part of Mayor Julián Castro’s
effort to bring more education and
work opportunities to San Antonio,
the new center will help provide
direction in navigating the college
process, offering free guidance to
locals preparing for and applying
to the higher education institution
of their choice.
Trained staff will work with
middle school through senior high
school students, transfer students,
parents, guardians and “stopouts”
(college students who stop attending
college before completing their
course plan.)
“So much of San Antonio’s
future economic growth and prosperity
depends upon the creation
of a new generation of highly
educated, highly skilled members
of the workforce,” stated Mayor
Castro. “Investing in an educational
resource of this magnitude
helps ensure that our students
District 5 City Councilman
David Medina, Jr. expressed his
gratitude and support for the widerange
of services the new venue
will provide.
“In order to improve the quality
of life within our community, college
education must be a priority,”
he said. “I’m extremely supportive
of Café College opening within the
inner city to provide access to all
students in District 5 for an opportunity
to get a higher education.”
Located at 131 El Paso St., the
center will be just like a coffee
shop--hot drinks, a lounge area and
Wi-Fi-- but it will also include a
menu of services to help prospect
students get the information and
support they need to go to college.
“We wanted this new college
resource center to be a place where
students would be comfortable,”
said Judy McCormick, executive
director of the San Antonio Education
Partnership. “We feel the name
reflects that setting.”
One-on-one advising will be
available, including assistance in
applying for admission, giving
information on specific colleges
and universities and career counseling.
Workshops will be scheduled
Notice of Application to Extend Facilities Rental Tariffs
On August 31, 2010, AEP Texas Central Company (TCC) and AEP Texas North Company
(TNC) (jointly, the Companies) led an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas
(Commission) to extend their Distribution Voltage Facilities Rental Tariffs an additional three
years, to January 1, 2014. The Companies do not propose to change the terms of the tariffs or the
current pricing in this docket. Sections 14.001, 39.001 and 39.051 of the Public Utility Regulatory
Act and Sections 25.341 through 25.343 of the Commission’s Substantive Rules provide for the
Commission to authorize a utility to petition to provide Facilities Rental Services if such services
are not widely available to customers in an area. TCC and TNC received Commission approval
to provide such services until January 1, 2011 in their most recent rate cases, Docket Nos. 33309
and 33310, respectively. The Distribution Voltage Facilities Rental Services are contained in
Section 6.1.2.3.6 of the Companies’ Tariffs for Retail Delivery Service.
The Companies have proposed an effective date of January 1, 2011, at which time the
proposed tariffs will be deemed approved if no objection is led with the Commission. Only
customers currently taking service under the existing tariffs, as well as the Retail Electric
Providers servicing those customers, are affected by this application. Those customers take
delivery service under Distribution Service Schedules 6.1.1.1.2 Secondary Voltage Service Equal
to or Less than 10kW; 6.1.1.1.3 Secondary Voltage Service Greater than 10kW; and 6.1.1.1.4
Primary Voltage Service, and are located throughout the service areas of TCC and TNC.
Persons who wish to intervene in or comment upon these proceedings, PUC Docket
No. 38618, Application of AEP Texas North Company and AEP Texas Central Company
to Extend Facilities Rental Tariffs, should notify the Commission as soon as possible, as an
intervention deadline of November 10, 2010 has been established. A request to intervene or
for further information should be mailed to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, P. O. Box
Mamapoly
By Nina Duran
nina@laprensasa.com
Monday night I was talking to my
2-year-old, Noah, as he was rubbing
his smooth, tiny belly. He looked
cute and I knew dinner time was
approaching. Since he loves fruit, I
asked him in a soft voice, “Does baby
want banana?”
He replied, “Nana, nana” and went
running to the kitchen. While he was
standing there, waiting, I then asked
him, “How about an apple?” He
sprinted from the kitchen and went
into the living room. My curious
eyes watched him as he pointed at
my MacBook and shouted, “Apple,
apple!”
It amazed me to think that my
2-year-old son connects the word
“apple” with MAC before fruit. We
are now living in a world where children
learn about technology before
they do lots of other things.
Because of this, I felt it appropriate
to talk about kids and online safety,
since they are pretty much inseparable
now. My 7-year-old is addicted to
online games and is quickly learning
how to surf the net. As a parent, I’ve
witnessed first-hand how impactful
technology and the internet can be at
a young age.
Perhaps you’re looking for ways to
protect your child, I know I am. Here
are a few helpful tips brought to you
by Disney Family that can help keep
your children safe online.
1. BOOKMARK QUALITY
SITES IN ADVANCE – Stock
your browser with age-appropriate
links and show your kids how to
navigate through ‘favorites.’ When
preschoolers learn that clicking on a
button takes them to fun sites, they
will do as you say.
2. PLAY ALONG – Familiarity
with what your child is playing online
can help ease your curiosity. When
your child is online and you have a
little bit of time, grab a seat next to
them and play along. Not only will
they love spending time with you,
but you also realize and see exactly
what your child is doing and you can
see what you need to worry about and
what you can relax knowing.
3. INVEST IN A SUBSCRIP-
TION – Sites like jumpstartworld.
com, mynoggin.com, pbskidsplay.
com and preschooltimeonline.com
are some of the increasing number of
sites that offer commercial-free content
for about $6 a month. Just make
sure you cancel your subscription if
your child loses interest.
4. TOUR GUIDE FIRST, PO-
LICE OFFICER SECOND –
Showing your older children how to
find things with key words lets them
know that you trust them. After you
show them what to do, you can then
tell them what not to do and what sites
to stay away from. Don’t be a police
officer first. Be supportive first, this
way they know you will help them
and steer them in the right direction.
5. OFFER EDUCATIONAL
OPTIONS – Download a copy of
Scratch to let a child program their
own game, or have your child help
you create a digital photo with Yahoo’s
Flickr or Google’s Picasa.
6. LET YOUR CHILD KNOW
THAT YOU ARE A SNOOP – It’s
okay to randomly check their history
and see what they have been looking
at. It’s also okay to let them know that
you are checking in on them. This
will help them learn accountability
and teach them how to appropriately
use the internet and ultimately, keep
them safe.
7. CREATE A TECHNOLO-
GY-FREE TIME – Don’t be afraid
to set limits. It’s important to monitor
their time online and replace that
(every now and then) with a board
game or some outside time. With
cell phones and other technology
around, it’s really okay to let go for
a few hours.
Friends, Faith and Fundraising: A cause to better lives
By Dennis M Ayotte Jr.
dayotte@laprensa.com
A paradox is defined as a statement
or proposition that seems
contradictory or absurd but in
reality expresses a possible truth.
Imagine your life is full of joy
and great health only to find out
how quickly it can change with
a simple diagnosis or loss of a
loved one.
What happens when you realize
your life is contrary to what it
once was, and you find yourself
on the opposite end of the spectrum?
Most people ask—why
me? But, when you ask why,
there is no true answer. You are
simply faced with dealing with
this issue at hand.
Last October, Louise Locker
was diagnosed with breast cancer
in the midst of preparations
for the “Elf Louise Christmas
Project.” After giving gifts to
under privileged children during
Christmas for the past 40 years
how could someone so gracious,
kind and caring end up with such
a diagnosis.
“I’ve never said why me, I
always ask what and how? How
am I going to create as much
good out of this,” said Locker. “I
want to embrace it with my heart
and soul and in the midst of the
challenge how can I bring some
good out of this for myself and
other people.”
After spending the night at
Locker’s house to care for her
as he’s done many nights, close
friend Jim Johnston, was on his
way home one morning when he
had an idea to help his friend.
After discussing the idea with his
wife, Johnston enlisted the help
of his friend Chris Duel, also a
close friend of Locker, to get a
list of local celebrities together
to pose for a 1940-50s Hollywood
glamour themed calendar.
“Typical Louise, she never
thinks of herself,” said Johnston.
“Louise agreed to do the calendar,
but only if an organization
was brought in to partner with
her in order to help others as
well.” So, Johnston contacted the
San Antonio affiliate of Susan
G. Komen for the Cure to partner
with the Help “Elf” Louise
Locker Beat Cancer Fund.
At Locker’s request, proceeds
from the project would be split
equally between her Help “Elf”
Louise Beat Cancer Fund and the
Bill White visits with Edgewood students
He added: “I’m glad to see him
[White] on the west side of San Antonio.
There’s so much history when
it comes to Edgewood and education
–it’s where the battle for equity and
school finance started many years
ago so I think it’s very significant
that he’s here to talk to the kids.”
Edgewood’s Superintendant Dr.
Elizabeth Garza said she was glad
students had the educational opportunity
to be a part of the election
process. “It’s one thing to read it in
the textbooks, but it’s another thing
to actually get the opportunity to hear
it from another candidate.”
Bill White’s daughter, Elena
White, 21, was also present to add
her support. She told La Prensa she
remained hopeful and excited to
have her father’s leadership in Texas.
“I see him in front of thousands
of people speaking and I see him
at home, and I know he’s the same
guy,” she said. “He does what he
says he’s going to do and he works
hard to do it.”
Former Houston Mayor Bill
White participated in a student run
question-and-answer session with
high school students from Somerset,
Harlandale, Southwest and South
San, as part of their government
and social studies curriculum. White
told students what he stands for and
what he’s going to represent when
he’s elected.
“Texas needs to plan ahead, that’s
why I’m here at Edgewood,” said
White.
Jesus Ramirez, 17, a senior at John
F. Kennedy, said he was excited to
listen to what the candidate had to
say. “I want to gain as much information
on what he plans to do as
governor. Although, I think White
knows what’s best and he’ll push
for just that.”
Governor Rick Perry was also
invited to attend, but the Republican
declined the invitation, saying
through a spokesperson he had
“scheduling issues.”
Other elected officials present
were County Commissioner Tommy
Adkisson, who introduced White as
“the next governor of Texas.”
State Representative José Menendez
stressed the importance of voting,
urging students to register if they
wanted to influence governmental
policy. “Registering to vote gives
you a voice. If you don’t vote, you
don’t matter.”
State Representative Joaquin
Castro recalled his roots and lifted
student’s spirits saying they were no
different than the students he sat next
to at Harvard Law School. “There is
so much potential here. I hope you
all chase your dreams and live out
those dreams.”

Capacitan a dueños de casas en Habitat for Humanity
Especial para La Prensa
Habitat for Humanity of San
Antonio estableció un Centro de
Capacitación para dar clases a los
propietarios de casas, acerca de
cómo hacer reparaciones menores
en su propiedad, ahorrando dinero
en mano de obra, y dando ocupación
productiva en su tiempo libre.
Dentro de los almacenes de
Habitat for Humanity, en la avenida
Probant, número 311, se
construyó una casa similar a las
que esta institución construye para
familias de recursos limitados, y
en ella, los propietarios de casas
y los futuros propietarios, reciben
instrucción de cómo hacer ellos
mismos las reparaciones menores,
como cubrir huecos en las paredes
o pintarlas; hacer trabajos menores
de plomería, electricidad e incluso
drywall (paredes interiores).
Bill
Krupa, vicepresidente de construcción
de Habitat for Humanity, dijo,
“que los propietarios de las casas
que construimos estén familiarizados
con su construcción y para ello
les proporcionamos la capacitación
adecuada”.
Este Centro de Capacitación fue
construido por personal de Habitat
for Humanity y por voluntarios.
Todas las familias que entran al
programa de casas habitación de
Habitat tienen que participar en
la capacitación de propietarios,
la cual requiere de 15 a 22 horas
de entrenamiento. Siguiendo la
práctica de asistir a familias de
moderados recursos económicos,
las instrucciones que se impartan
en este centro son gratuitas, bajo la
supervisión de expertos de Habitat
for Humanity.
SPORTS
Blanda epitomized an NFL ironman
Tom LaMarre
SportsXchange
FoxSports.com
On Aug. 26, 1976, another
hot afternoon at
Oakland Raiders training
camp in Santa Rosa,
Calif., two sportswriters
were surprised when
George Blanda burst out
of his motel room with
suitcases in hand.
The writers, who just
happened to walking by,
helped the living legend
load his car, and in return
he gave them a blockbuster
story.
“They put me on waivers,
and they want me to
stick around to see what
happens,” said Blanda,
who was just shy of his
49th birthday at the time.
“But to hell with that. I’m
out of here.”
And with that, the longest
and one of the greatest
careers in the history
of pro football was over.
Blanda, who died Monday
at age 83, played 26
seasons with the Chicago
Bears, Baltimore Colts,
Houston Oilers and Raiders
as a quarterback, linebacker
and kicker.
After playing at Kentucky
under Paul “Bear”
Bryant, he embarked on
his Hall of Fame professional
career while playing
for George Halas with
the Bears in 1949.
Blanda scored 2,002
points, an NFL record at
the time, and passed for
26,920 yards and 236
touchdowns while playing
in parts of four decades.
But what those who
played with and against
him remember most is his
attitude, and he had it on
and off the field.
“George Blanda was
possibly the fiercest
competitor I have ever
known,” said center Jim
Otto, who had his own
Hall of Fame career with
the Raiders. “He was competing
in everything he did
in life.
“If he saw two ants on
the ground that looked
like they were racing,
he would get you to bet
which one would win. In
practice, when I was snapping
the ball to the holder,
he would bet he could
make it from wherever he
was. He didn’t just want
to practice, he wanted to
make it challenging.
“He was loved by so
many people for his intensity,
and I’m sure some
people got the wrong side
of that if they were the
competition.”
Blanda, an avid and talented
golfer, would invite
Raiders rookies out to the
golf course and then take
their money.
“He hustled us,” said
Mike Siani, the Raiders’
No. 1 draft choice in 1972.
Blanda had a testy relationship
with Halas, the
legendary Papa Bear, who
was just as crusty, and his
playing days seemed to be
over when he retired from
the Bears after the 1958
season.
But after he sat out one
season, the American
Football League came
along in 1960, and Blanda
became one of its first
stars with the Oilers,
leading them to the new
league’s first championship.
He helped make the
AFL competitive with the
established NFL.
“That first year, the
Houston Oilers or Los Angeles
Chargers could have
beaten the NFL champion
(Philadelphia) in a Super
Bowl,” Blanda said years
later.
“I think the AFL was capable
of beating the NFL
in a Super Bowl game as
far back as 1960 or ‘61. I
just regret we didn’t get
the chance to prove it.”
When Blanda was released
by the Oilers on
March 18, 1967, managing
general partner Al
Davis of the Raiders might
have been the only one
who thought there was life
left in his arm and leg.
Blanda signed with
the Raiders and helped
them reach Super Bowl II,
where Oakland lost to the
Green Bay Packers, 33-14.
“If I had a mentor, it was
George,” said quarterback
Kenny Stabler, who led
the Raiders to their first
of three Super Bowl victories.
“We were friends,
and the bond that pulled us
together was that we both
played for Coach Bryant
in college.
“George made the first
move, coming over to talk
to me. I was in awe of him.
He did all the talking, and
I did all the listening. The
thing I remember most
that he told me was to be
ready when you got your
opportunity.
“Not only did he tell
me, but he showed me,
because when he got his
chances, he went out and
did it, especially in 1970.”
In 1970, Blanda’s legend
was already assured,
but he added perhaps the
greatest chapter. He was
a backup to quarterback
Daryle Lamonica at the
November of 1975. (Crourtesy photo)
time, but for five weeks he
was, as Raiders announcer
Bill King said, “king of
the world.”
The 43-year-old’s lategame
heroics bailed out
the Raiders in five consecutive
games.
First, he came on when
Lamonica was injured and
threw three touchdown
passes to beat the Pittsburgh
Steelers.
One week later, he
kicked a 48-yard field
goal with three seconds
left to tie the Kansas City
Chiefs, 17-17.
Against the Cleveland
Browns, he threw a gametying
touchdown pass with
1:34 left and then kicked
a game-winning, 53-yard
field goal with three seconds
remaining.
In the next game, he
relieved Lamonica and
threw a touchdown pass to
Fred Biletnikoff with 2:28
left to beat the Denver
Broncos.
On the fifth week, his
16-yard field goal in the
closing second beat the
San Diego Chargers, 20-
17.
“George Blanda is the
greatest clutch player the
game of pro football has
ever known,” Davis said
when introducing Blanda
for induction to the Hall
of Fame in 1981.
Once, when Blanda was
in at quarterback in another
cliff-hanger and driving
the Raiders inside the
opponents’ 20-yard line,
he came to the sideline to
consult with coach John
Madden during a timeout.
“Let me throw three
(post patterns) to Warren
Wells, and I guarantee
you a touchdown,” Blanda
said.
Madden said: “If you
guarantee it, then go
ahead.”
On first down, Blanda’s
pass was incomplete,
but he delivered on his
guarantee when Wells
caught the second one for
the game-winning touchdown.
Tom LaMarre is a senior
writer for The Sports
Xchange and was one of
the reporters who helped
Blanda load his car on
that final day. The other
was Frank Cooney, who
contributed to this article
and is now publisher of
The Sports Xchange.

Vístase de rojo para el corazón
Por Jimena Pérez
jperez@laprensasa.com
Las enfermedades cardiovasculares
son la causa de muerte número
uno entre las latinas y en promedio,
las hispanas son más propensas a
desarrollar una enfermedad cardiovascular
10 años antes que mujeres
de otra etnia. Es por eso que Go
Red Por Tú Corazón se ha dado
a la tarea de crear conciencia e
informar a la sociedad, en especial
a la comunidad hispana, de este
problema que se ha incrementado
considerablemente.
“Para nosotros es una meta
grande llevar esa información a
nuestra comunidad porque muchas
mujeres todavía no reconocen
Red for Women; no obstante, la
mujer latina no estaba bien informada
del riesgo de enfermedades
cardiovasculares y es por eso que se
lanzó esta campaña”, explicó Silva.
Más de 435,000 mujeres mueren
al año a consecuencia de enfermedades
del corazón, es decir, aproximadamente
una mujer muere cada
minuto. De hecho, el 80 por ciento
de los eventos cardiacos de mujeres
están ligado a las malas decisiones
que toman, incluyendo dieta, actividad
física y fumar.
Una de las formas de modificar
las estadísticas es cambiando los
hábitos alimenticios e incluyendo
un programa de ejercicios a su
rutina. El comer sanamente puede
reducir factores de riesgo para
desarrollar alguna enfermedad del
corazón por ejemplo; hipertensión,
altos niveles de glucosa en la sangre,
colesterol alto y obesidad.
PARA AGUAS RESIDUALES MUNICIPALES
NUEVO
PERMISO PROPUESTO NO. WQ0014959001
SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. Two Seventy Seven Limited y Guadalupe Blanco River Authority, 1826 North Loop 1604 West, Suite 250, San Antonio, Texas
administrativa de lo contencioso, debe identificar el nombre y la dirección de una persona que representa al grupo para recibir correspondencia en el futuro;
San Antonio Affiliate of Susan
to always have something in
my life that isn’t for me, said
Locker. “It just gives me such a
great feeling and so much more
energy for life.”
Once word spread about the
idea of “Strike A Pose” to help
Locker and the San Antonio Affiliate
of Susan G. Komen for the
Cure, filling the calendar pages
with some of the Alamo City’s
most beautiful women was effortless.
Among the women who
posed were BMP radio’s C.J.
Cruz, WOAI’s Delaine Mathieu,
and FOX’s Karen Martinez.
“Being able to do this meant
a lot to me. I’m a breast cancer
survivor, so raising awareness
about this horrible disease is a
personal goal,” said Fox’s Karen
Martinez. “I’m touched and
amazed by all of the beautiful
women willing to take part in the
calendar shoot. I get emotional
just thinking about how many
people this will reach and how
much awareness it will raise.”
Cancer has affected many
people’s lives whether it’s been
a personal battle or one within
your family. “My grandmother
had breast cancer. She was diagnosed
in her 30’s. She fought
it and lived a very long and
wonderful life,” said WOAI’s
Delaine Mathieu. “Supporting
the cause is an absolute must for
me. I want to see a cure for this
disease that has taken so many
people’s lives.”
Locker expressed that, you
we are in life it could be anything
whether it’s your career, a relationship
or an illness.
Locker’s greatest joy in life
since she was a 5-year-old little
girl was running through the
aisles of her small-town grocery
store and being able to connect
with people. “I would run up
and down the aisles saying hi to
complete strangers,” said Locker
“I’ve always carried the absolute
belief in the goodness in people
and the potential for good in the
world.”
“I feel so honored to have been
asked by Jim and Vanessa of
of Strike A Pose,” said Cruz. “I
am so fortunate to be in the company
of so many amazing women
and to have an opportunity to
help another amazing and incredible
woman, Elf Louis Locker.”
Locker is now cancer free and
in remission. She is a third of the
way through radiation therapy to
ensure she remains cancer free.
“It makes all the difference in
the world when you are going
through something that is frightening
and life altering.” said
Locker. “It’s the love the people
give you and the kindness along
