How to budget for the holidays

The idea of cutting back on
Christmas is easier said than
done.
It’s difficult when you’ve got
kids who still believe in Santa,
a teenager who refuses to be
part of the family, loud aunts
and uncles, grandparents and
a family tradition of just going
nuts over the holidays.
You try to set a budget every
year, but let’s face it, there’s
always an unexpected expense
that pops out of nowhere, like
the new dress for mom to go to
the office Christmas party (she
can’t wear last year’s outfit, for
goodness sake).
Alleviate the potential pain of
an expensive season. Not blowing
the budget requires planning,
determination… and a
little imagination! Here’s how:
1. Make new family traditions.
If you can’t afford the
annual ski trip, boat trip or
camping trip, find a new way
to celebrate. Spend the day at
a local park or attend a free
holiday festival or concert –you
could even volunteer together
as a family.
2. Give gifts that require
your time and talent. Babysitting,
home decorating and
cleaning certificates are often
more appreciated than storebought
items. Consider the
needs of those on your gift list.
A busy mom might appreciate
several home-cooked dinners
she can reheat. An overworked
homeowner might be grateful
for an extra set of hands for a
home-improvement project.
3. Give theme gifts. Choose
a category of gift to give. Depending
on your budget, everyone
gets a magazine subscription,
DVD, tickets to concerts
or sporting events. This will
also keep you from buying little
extras that always add up.
4. Discover holiday magic.
Think of low-cost ways to celebrate.
Let your children sleep
under the Christmas tree. On a
snowy evening, fill a thermos
with hot cocoa, bundle up and
take a walk to look at decorations
around the neighborhood.
If it’s too cold, make a CD of
your family’s holiday music or
find a low-cost arts-and-crafts
project that will keep the kids
busy for hours.
5. Send e-mail greeting
cards rather than printed
ones. It’s an inexpensive way
to share holiday wishes, photos
and family updates with friends
and family.
6. Shop at dollar stores.
Don’t think you can’t find
anything value at these stores
–you’ll find books, stationary,
Christmas bows and Christmas
cards, candles, candy, bath
items and more.
7. Host a decorating party.
Invite friends over to make
holiday decorations, assemble
gingerbread houses or decorate
cookies. Ask each guest to
bring a particular item so that
everyone shares in the cost of
the evening.
8. Host a holiday movie
party. Get two favorite holiday
flicks and throw a potluck
shindig.
9. Reuse and recycle. Create
paper snowflakes from recycled
office paper, newspaper or old
gift wrap. Turn holiday cards
or gift wrap into gift tags and
Christmas ornaments and use
greenery from your yard to
decorate the house.
10. Give family gifts. Rather
than buy a present for every
member of the family, give a
group gift, like a board game,
water park passes or zoo membership.

I can’t help it. I love beautiful
women, but my only problem
is I’m still plagued by insecure
thoughts. I’m stuck in
this fat boy mentality-albeit
the fact I’ve lost more than
60 pounds in less than a year.
When I started my plight
to lose weight it was solely
driven by the hot chick in
my Anthropology class. I sat
next to her twice a week for
an entire semester, getting to
know her, but in a non-creepy
kind of way.

Eva Ybarra es una mujer que
deleita a su público al tocar el
acordeón. Ybarra descubrió su
gusto por este instrumento cuando
tenía solo 4 años, la talentosa
mujer nos confesó que cuando
las niñas de su edad jugaban con
muñecas, ella prefería tocar su
acordeón, dice que a donde quiera
que iba la llevaba con ella.
La reina del acordeón, nació
en San Antonio, Ybarra aprendió
a tocar el acordeón de
manera autodidacta, su carrera
en el medio de la música
tuvo sus inicios en los clubes
y restaurantes a los seis años,
al lado de sus padres. Su estilo
fluido y rápido, la distinguen.
I have MAN[y] Issues
her favorite color, where she
worked, her shoe size, what
her favorite restaurants were
and anything else she cared to
share with me. I also learned
she enjoyed watching sports,
that we shared the same interest
in music and we actually
had a lot in common. Yet, all
I could think was how she’d
never date an overweight guy
like me.
I never missed a class in
hopes that one day I would
have the confidence to ask
her out and at least get one
of those maybe/no answers
like “I have plans with my
girlfriends this weekend,
maybe some other time.” She
was my motivation to get off
the couch and do something
about my tubby figure.
Long story short—I got in
shape, she moved away and
I never asked her out. Now, I
will forever remember her as
the one that got away because
I was scared.
I’ve always been labeled
the guy with a “great personality”
(a.k.a. the polite
way chicks tell you that
they would never date you),
but I’m becoming a thinner

un gran afecto en la comunidad
de Seattle, y también recibió
un gran cariño por parte de
sus estudiantes (entre ellos

Picks of the Week
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the
World” (PG-13)
“Scott Pilgrim” is not only
the most stylistic and visually
engaging films of the year, it
also is one of the most enjoyable.
Michael Cera stars as
the titular Pilgrim, a Canadian
slacker who plays bass in an
indie band and finds himself
in the awkward and life-threatening
situation of falling in
love with the uberhip and outof-his-league
Ramona (Mary
Elizabeth Winstead). But before
he can date her, he must defeat
her seven deadly exes.
Sure, it’s a goofy and ridiculous
premise, but in this fantasy
comic book/video game-based
universe where Pilgrim and his
friends reside, it makes perfect
sense, because here everything
and everyone exist in a place
where physical laws are all
based on videogames. Punch
a dude hard enough and he’ll
fly back 300 yards. Defeat an
opponent, and he poofs out of
existence, leaving nothing but
a shower of golden coins, a la
Mario.
Of the hundreds of films
based on comic books, “Scott
Pilgrim” is the first movie to
perfectly replicate the comic
book experience and aesthetic.
Check it out. This film’s
charm and whimsy shouldn’t
be missed.
“Sherlock: Season One”

“Doctor Who” producer
Steven Moffat has managed to
do what most people thought
impossible: Bring to the small
screen a modern-day Sherlock
Holmes series that is not only
exciting and entertaining, but
also manages to make the detective
relevant in a world of
cell phones, internet and CSI

units. Benedict Cumberbatch
(“Atonement”) stars as Holmes,
and he delivers a performance
that rivals even the great Jeremy
Brett’s — a feat I didn’t think

two men is what makes the
program a delight to watch. The
DVD release includes all three
90- minute specials, the original
un-aired pilot (which is, in my
opinion, superior to the first
episode), commentary track on
the finale and a featurette on the

¡Cuidado! Los hombres llegan a la cocina

El tiempo en el que la mayoría de
las mujeres se la pasaba cocinando,
pertenece al pasado, hoy en día muchas
de las mujeres tienen un trabajo
que atender, además del hogar y la
educación de sus hijos. Sin duda alguna
los hombres están participando
más en las labores cotidianas del
hogar. La familia está trabajando en
equipo para poder tener un tiempo
de calidad en familia.
La participación del hombre en
diversas tareas se ha hecho latente
en actividades que normalmente desempeñan
las mujeres. Actualmente
existen programas de televisión en
los que el sexo opuesto participa
activamente, como es el caso del
programa televisivo “Hombres en
la Cocina”.
La Prensa de San Antonio tuvo
la oportunidad de entrevistar a
Federico López, quien junto a
Daniel Ovadía, Antonio de Livier,
Edgar Nuñez, Christian Bravo,
todos reconocidos chefs mexicanos,
forman un grupo de cocineros
que enseñan sus mejores recetas
utilizando los productos que comúnmente
se tienen en casa. Cada chef
explica cómo preparar en forma
sencilla platillos de alta cocina, con
el producto y la técnica indicados.
“En los últimos 10 años la cocina
ha evolucionado mucho, pero por
el otro lado es una cocina muy
tradicional mexicana. Nos juntamos
cinco amigos que nos conocíamos
de antes, no a raíz del programa. Interactuamos
de manera muy casual.
Cada uno representa su cocina, con
su propio estilo”, comentó López.
Este es un programa que tiene
picardía mexicana, tiene alto sentido
de humor masculino y se caracteriza
por el sello tan personal que le han
impreso, en el cual se destaca la
picardía de cada unos de los chefs,
el sentido del humor predomina en
cada una de las emisiones, es un
programa muy autentico.
Lo que tiene de particular este
programa es que se cocina como la
mayoría de los hombres lo hacen,
con lo que hay, con lo que se tiene,
con la simplicidad de abrir el refrigerador
y cocinar, nos compartió
López.
“Son recetas muy estructuradas,
pero de la misma forma, si no hay un
ingrediente, no pasa nada, lo cambiamos
o lo sustituimos, hacemos
que la gente se sienta en una zona
de confort. Estamos cocinando con
creatividad y usando nuestros conocimientos
de cocina”, dijo López.
México se caracteriza por tener
una gran cocina mexicana muy
estructurada, pero también otras influencias,
como la cocina española,
la francesa, oriental, y sobre todo
una cocina de arraigo prehispánico,
con esta gastronomía lo que hace
este grupo de chefs es una mezcla
del pasado, del presente y del futuro.
Mucha de la influencia de López
es mediterránea, debido a que le
tocó estudiar en los 90’s cuando
estaba muy de moda este tipo de
cocina, así como también la comida
nutricional, por lo que utiliza mucho
el aceite de oliva y el vinagre balsámico.
“Somos muy claros en el programa
cuando es una raíz prehispánica,
o una raíz tradicional
mexicana o cuando aplicamos una
técnica internacional. Por ejemplo,
Toño, elige cocina mexicana, pero
sus técnicas y sus influencias son
muy internacionales. Hay mucho
respeto entre todos los chefs, si
alguno sabe hacer algo mejor que
otro, se respeta”, agregó López.
Hay un compañerismo muy fuerte
dentro del programa, generalmente
interactúan de dos a tres chefs en
cada emisión y en otros programas
todos tienen varias cápsulas de
información. Los comentarios que
hacen son sobre la receta que están
Edgar Núñez, Daniel Ovadía, Federico López, Antonio de Livier,
Christian Bravo, todos reconocidos chefs mexicanos, llevan a los
espectadores lo mejor de la cocina mexicana, con técnicas muy

“Yo creo que a diferencia de
otros programas de televisión, que
se guían por un guion, aquí no hay
guiones entonces se puede ver la
personalidad de cada uno tal y como
somos. Así como nos mostramos
en televisión así somos en la vida
real. Cada programa es como una
charla entre amigos”, puntualizó
López.
Federico compartió su punto de
vista sobre la gran participación de
los hombres en la cocina, dijo que
ahora, el género masculino, ha roto
el paradigma de que si un hombre
cocina es gay, agregó que muchos
hombres han encontrado en la cocina
una forma de relajarse y que
al contrario muchas mujeres dicen
no cocino, porque no se cocinar,
porque parece ser una obligación.
“Creo que todos los seres humanos
tenemos nuestro lado femenino
y masculino y cuando los explotamos
tenemos más sensibilidad y el
hombre que piense que cocinar no
tiene nada que ver con lo femenino,
lo va a disfrutar”, finalizó López.

Gloria Anzaldua: the bridge to justice

The Esperanza Peace and
Justice Center exhibited a documentary
film on the life of
Chicana lesbian writer Gloria
Anzaldua on November 4 called
Altar.
Gloria Anzaldua was a writer,
a poet, a professor and theorist
in cultural matters.
Anzaldua wrote and spoke
about notions relative to bordercrossing,
borderlands, sexuality,
education, spirituality, queer
identity and cultural studies.
Anzaldua’s most recognized
works include co-editing This
Bridge Called my Back and
her writing of Borderlands/La
Frontera: The New Mestiza
which describes with vividness
the harsh conditions and difficult
experience of crossing
the border.
“Gloria was a Chicana, a lesbian,
fronteriza, Tejana whose
work lives beyond her life,” said
Norma Cantu, UTSA English
professor. “She opened doors
for a lot of border studies. I think
Gloria stood for who we are as
Latinos and Latinas in the U.S.
She would have been appalled
by the SB1070 Arizona state law
that was passed.”
“The Ethnic Studies law next
to the SB1070 is a more blatant
attack on our rights as citizens
because it diminishes our cultural
heritage.”
Spiritual activism was very
important to Anzaldua. She
dedicated a great part of her life
to bringing diverse communities
together and healing the world
through diminishing the injustice
of group segregations as
far as race, color and sexuality.
“Justice is the heart of being
human, without justice and seeking
equity for all people, our
ability to be human is reduced

Theresa Torres, Ph. D, assistant
professor of religious studies
and sociology at University of
Kansas-City Missouri. “We’re
stuck in the middle, the place
where you’re between cultures
and you can’t go to either one.

and the tenth location for the Alamo
Drafthouse system. Located
at a 635,000-square-foot shopping

“The reception has been great,
and everything has turned out just

San Antonio welcomes yet
another great place to enjoy a
warm dinner, tasty dessert and the
latest Hollywood flick all under
one roof. The Alamo Drafthouse
Cinema, located at the Village of
Stone Oak, opened its doors last
week showing the best first-run
movies as well as their signature
specialty programming.
“We’re extremely proud to have
our third Alamo Drafthouse in San
Antonio,” said Chris Hoegemeyer,
owner. “We’ve wanted to be in
Stone Oak for some time now, and
feel we’ll be a great addition to the
community.”
Named by Entertainment
Weekly as the “Best Theater in

han reabierto el debate
sobre el matrimonio y la adopción de
niños por personas del mismo sexo.
En el libro titulado "Yo", el artista
relata detalles íntimos de su vida.
Las palabras de Ricky Martin a la
cadena Univision en las que asegura
que casarse con su actual pareja es
una opción de la que le gustaría
disponer provocaron en Puerto Rico
reacciones a favor y en contra de los
matrimonios gays por parte de líderes
de distintos grupos sociales.
"Desafortunadamente, en muchos
países latinoamericanos, en Puerto
Rico y algunos estados de los Estados
Unidos no existe esa opción", fueron
las palabras de Martin que encendieron
la polémica.
El activista de la "Asociación
Puerto Rico para Todos" y líder
mediático de la comunidad gay del
país caribeño, Pedro Julio Serrano,
señaló que la igualdad en el matrimonio
"es un derecho que corresponde
a todos los seres humanos".
Serrano subrayó que la actual legislación
puertorriqueña en materia de
matrimonio no reconoce la igualdad
para todos los ciudadanos que, sin
embargo, sí confiere la Constitución
del país.
El activista gay recordó que en
Puerto Rico el Código Civil estipula
que el matrimonio solamente puede
establecerse entre hombre y mujer,
norma contra la que dijo luchará la
comunidad lésbica, gay, bisexual y
transgénero (LGBT) boricua.
Serrano resaltó que, sin embargo,
hay un borrador de reforma en manos
de la Comisión de Revisión del Código
Civil para que sean reconocidas
las uniones de hecho entre personas
del mismo sexo.
El líder de la comunidad gay puertorriqueña
reconoció que la iniciativa
lleva años atascada en la Comisión y
que, en cualquier caso, no es equiparable
con el matrimonio, el auténtico
objetivo para la comunidad LGBT
del país.
Dijo que si la ley permitiera el matrimonio
entre personas del mismo
sexo se conseguiría un "reconocimiento
social" al que aspira la
comunidad LGBT.
Serrano se refirió además a la posibilidad
de la adopción por parte de
personas del mismo sexo, meta que
consideró básica para la formación
de una familia.
El activista explicó que la reproducción
asistida es una de las vías a
la que tienen que recurrir las personas
del mismo sexo, tras recordar que el
mismo gobernador de Puerto Rico,
Luis Fortuño, acudió a este método
para tener descendencia.
La postura de Serrano fue contestada
por el presidente de la Pastoral
Unidad a favor de la Familia, César
Vázquez, que insistió en que todas
las personas, incluido Ricky Martin,
son fruto de la unión entre hombre
y mujer.
"Los hijos siempre han sido la consecuencia
de la unión entre hombre y
mujer", insistió el líder conservador.
Vázquez apoyó hace meses la
iniciativa del legislador Norman
Ramírez de elevar a rango constitucional
el matrimonio entre un
hombre y una mujer, desestimada
por la presidenta de la Cámara de
Representantes, Jenniffer González,
que la tildó de innecesaria y de crear

una controversia artificial.
Según datos barajados por Serrano,
cerca del 10 por ciento de los
puertorriqueños son gays, entre los
que incluye a lesbianas, bisexuales
y transgénero.
El activista recordó a pesar de
representar, según sus cálculos, al 10
por ciento de la población, el 33 por
ciento de los suicidios que se llevan a
cabo en Puerto Rico corresponden a
personas del colectivo LGBT.
"El libro y las palabras de Ricky
Martin están salvando vidas", señaló
Serrano, que resaltó que la actitud del
cantante servirá para que muchos
gays afronten con mayor esperanza
sus problemas.

se acogió al capítulo 11 de la Ley de
Quiebras de Los Estados Unidos. y
presentó ante los tribunales neoyorquinos
su estrategia de reorganización
para su aprobación judicial, un trámite
que se calcula podría demorarse al

Natalie Martínez, una ejemplar detective en “Detroit 1-8-7”

¿Qué tiene que hacer, para ser
detective en una de las ciudades
más grandes del país? Esa pregunta
no todos sabríamos contestarla,
pero definitivamente, la
actriz Natalie Martínez, sabe la
respuesta correcta. No es que ella
sea detective, pero su personaje en
la serie, “Detroit 1-8-7”, si lo es.
La destacada actriz juega un
papel importante dentro de esta
serie, como la detective “Ariana
Sánchez”. “Mi personaje es una
detective que está rodeada de
muchos hombres en la oficina
donde trabaja”, dijo en una breve
entrevista vía telefónica.
La preparación para el personaje
de este calibre le tomó un poco de
tiempo, de acuerdo a lo que nos
contó, la actriz quiso hacerlo lo
mejor posible. Con esa entereza se
dedicó a crear un personaje propio
dentro de la serie, para dejar el
nombre de los latinos muy en alto.
“Me preparé viendo como estas
personas (detectives), trabajan,

porque cuando uno tiene que hacer
un personaje tiene que prepararse
muy bien”, compartió la actriz de
“Death Race” (Universal 2008).
Lejos de la pantalla la actriz hace
conciencia del trabajo, que en verdad
estos hombres y mujeres valientes
enfrentan a diario en todas
las ciudades del país. De ahí nacen
las ganas de poner toda su energía,
para lograr crear un personaje que
deje huella en los televidentes, que
semana a semana ven esta interesante
serie televisiva.
“Aunque no me imagino,
después de todo lo que ellos ven
en su día de trabajo, al final del día
se van a casa para estar tranquilos
con sus familias. Es algo muy
difícil que es admirable, por eso
quiero hacer un buen trabajo, por
eso quise prepararme bien para que
la gente se crea el personaje”, expresó
muy emocionada Martínez.
Los inicios de Martínez en el
mundo del espectáculo vienen
desde que era muy chica, siendo
su madre quien la motivara a iniciarse.
Participó en la audición para
ser la imagen de la línea de ropa
que lanzaba entonces, la famosa
Jennifer López, mejor conocida
como Jlo.
“Mi mamá me motivó para
hacer la audición y pues quedé
seleccionada entre más de cinco
mil jóvenes, que también hicieron
la audición”. Desde entonces ha
buscado su propio camino en este
ambiente. “Fue una gran experiencia
para mí, de ahí la agencia
me ayudó a buscar más trabajos y
pues ahora se ha dado esta oportunidad”,
agregó.
Al estar logrando sus metas
poco a poco, Natalie, nos confió
el secreto que la ha llevado en ascenso
al éxito. “Se logra a base de
esfuerzo, yo he trabajado mucho.
Es de hacer castings casi todos los
días. Creo que ahora ese esfuerzo
esta recompensado”.
A la vez, también envía un mensaje
a todas las mujeres que sueñan
con lograr tener una profesión, no
necesariamente de actriz. “Les
digo a todas las mujeres que hay
que trabajar mucho y dedicarse a
lo que uno quiere. Hay que ponerle
muchas ganas”, concluyó.
Latinitas 2010 tuvo su Hispanic
Heritage Youth Awards
patrocinada por The Hispanic
Heritage Foundation (HHF).
Una vez más se condujo este
gran evento, en el cual participaron
las latinas más brillantes.
Este programa nacional de liderazgo
sirve como retroalimentación
de los esfuerzos producidos
por líderes latinas que han
sobresalido en su comunidad
en diferentes categorías como
ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería,
matemáticas, negocios, periodismo,
educación y deportes.
Latinitas es una organización
que se enfoca en la fortaleza
de niñas hispanas a través de
los medios de comunicación
y la tecnología. Publica una
revista bilingüe a través de la
red latinitasmagazine.org, por
y para las niñas hispanas. Así
mismo, ofrece oportunidades
involucrando a las niñas en el
proceso de publicación, desarrollando
así sus propios medios
de comunicación. También
ofrece divertidos campamentos
y programas después de la
escuela, proyectos de mentores
y talleres, enfocándose en los
medios de comunicación.
Uno de los programas más
significativos de HHF fue el
acreditado Youth Awards, el
cual fue creado hace 13 años
con la intención de forjar líderes
latinas en el país.
Algunos de los requisitos que
se deben cubrir para formar
parte de este gran evento son,
el haber obtenido un promedio
mayor a 3.0, estar cursando su
segundo año de preparatoria y
haber mandado la aplicación
durante el mes de marzo.
El programa ofrece dos oportunidades,
de las cuales se
pueden beneficiar las jóvenes,
Educational Grants y Community
Project, en donde la ganadora
podrá utilizar los préstamos
para pagar su educación cuando
asista a la universidad o bien,
para formar un servicio comunitario
bien planeado para ayudar
y brindar soporte como voluntaria
ofreciendo conferencias a
jóvenes latinas.
Otra de las propuestas de Latinitas
es encontrar una forma de
solucionar el desequilibrio que
existe en las actividades deportivas
entre las chicas hispanas y

La serie “Detroit 1-8-7”, se
transmite los martes a las 9 p.m.
hora del centro, por la cadena
las chicas norteamericanas, ya
que las hispanas participan un
15% menos en el deporte comparado
con las norteamericanas.

en los deportes para las chicas,
la revista está lanzando la
búsqueda nacional de chicas que
ejemplifiquen logros atléticos y

de enriquecimiento, las niñas
descubren su voz y desarrollan
habilidades de comunicación

Battle of drumline
bragging rights

In a full marching band, drumlines are
rarely recognized at halftime shows in
the crowd of the band. Apart from the ensemble,
drumlines can takeover and ignite a
stadium with displays of percussion genius.
On Saturday, November 13, eight groups
from around the Alamo City will step out
of the pit and have their time in the spotlight
at the 5th Annual Cricket Silver Cup
Drumline Competition.
High school and college marching bands
integrate drumlines; however, they can
also exist independent of these ensembles.
Competitions across the nation have taken
place for years to feature the skilled youth
of the percussion world.
This year’s Cricket Silver Cup will be
held at Kennedy High School’s Frank Mata
Stadium at noon. Eight high schools including
Brandeis, Edison, Fox Tech, Lanier,
Kennedy, Southside, Brackenridge and
Memorial will compete in this year. Bragging
rights for the next year are on the line,
so expect the drumlines to bring their best.

Que tal, mi nombre es Andrea y te escribo
porque quiero pedirte un consejo acerca de un
problema que tengo. Hace como dos meses empecé
una relación con un chico Puertorriqueño
llamado Juan, hasta ahora seguimos juntos y
él me encanta, pero la verdad últimamente he
estado un poco incomoda. Desde hace unas
semanas, Juan me ha estado presionando para
tener relaciones sexuales, lo cual a mi no me
parece adecuado; yo crecí con la enseñanza de mis padres de
entregarle tu cuerpo a solo una persona y al momento de estar

ver a Juan, porque siento que al momento de vernos el va a querer

bien. Entiendo que en estos momentos estas pasando por una situación
física y emocional muy fuerte. Hay muchos hombres que no
entienden que algunas mujeres crecen con los principios que sus
padres les enseñan desde pequeños, como el mantener su virginidad
hasta el matrimonio. Andrea, actualmente estamos viviendo en una
época en la que el sexo nos rodea a todos, el sexo está presente en
la escuela, en el trabajo, en la calle y en todas las partes que uno
se presente, pero eso no significa que tu tengas que ser parte de
él. Muchas veces, para las mujeres el sexo tiene mucho más significado
emocional que para los hombres y es por eso que vivimos
con el temor de enfrentarlo, pero si tu estas firme siempre en tus
decisiones nadie puede forzarte a hacer lo que tú no decidas hacer.
Ahora hay muy pocas personas que piensan en llegar vírgenes al
matrimonio, en verdad Andrea, te quiero felicitar porque esa puede
ser para ti una de las virtudes más grandes que te ha dejado la
educación de tus padres. Lo mejor que yo te recomendaría hacer
en estos momentos es enfrentar a Juan y la siguiente vez que el te
presione a tener relaciones sexuales, coméntale lo que tú piensas
acerca de eso, estoy segura que si él en verdad te quiere, te respetará
y comprenderá lo que tú piensas acerca de mantenerte virgen
hasta el matrimonio. En el peor de los casos, podría ser que Juan
no acepte tu forma de pensar, entonces, te darás cuenta que si no
respeta lo que tú piensas en ese momento, en un futuro será muy
probable que no lo haga. Andrea, mucho ánimo, recuerda que eres
una mujer muy fuerte y nadie te puede obligar a hacer cosas que no
desees hacer. Recuerda que tienes una virtud muy grande, espero
sigas manteniendo esa firmeza.

Gloria Anzaldua was
denied the opportunity to speak
at universities or any other cultural
center. Racism, sexism,
and homophobia were at the core
of the opposition. Gay bars were
the only venue that welcomed
Alzandua’s presentations.
“It wasn’t the element that she
was a Latina, that she was working
class, or that she was from
the border, her being a lesbian
is what kept people pushing her
away,” said Graciela Sanchez,
director of Esperanza Peace and
Justice Center.
Alzandua’s Borderlands book
soon thereafter became published
and sold a significant
amount of copies.
Years later, on May 15, 2004,
Alzandua died due to diabetes
complications. She was unable
to complete her dissertation for
her Literature doctorate from
the University of California,
Santa Cruz.
In 2005 however, Alzandua
was posthumously awarded with
her doctorate in Literature.
Today, Gloria Alzandua’s
works continue to influence
the lives of many community
members.
“Gloria’s work helped me
find ways to heal, to see myself
as a whole person and validated
a truth and gave me the anima
to continue to follow the path
of whatever it is that I am supposed
to follow,” said Fabiola
Torralba, a member of the Esperanza
center. “It taught me that
my truth can exist in this world.
I can be a creative person, an
intellectual even if these experiences
and work are not respected
in academia.”
Torralba added that she personally
resents the academia
because it forces individuals
through its institutions to forget
who they are.
“As a student you spend your
entire time, not learning of
yourself as someone who is a
queer, indigenous or someone
who is from the barrio. Academia
is a training ground to
learning how to forget who you
are. You must deal with that in
order to survive in this society.
Academia disconnects you from
what’s really important, like you
background,” Torralba said.
“We learn to read Plato and
Shakespeare and all other things
that don’t speak to our lives in
the ways that Cherrie Moraga,
Audrey Lorde and Gloria Ansaldua
do. Anzaldua teaches us
to be whole, we all came from
communities that taught us to
be whole and institutions like
academia teach us the opposite.”
Alzandua might be gone, but
her works will continue to govern
the lives of many through
the philosophies she left behind.

San Antonio Symphony
honors veterans

The San Antonio Symphony
will honor veterans with a Salute
to Service concert Sunday,
November 7 at the Municipal
Auditorium. The event is scheduled
to begin at 7 p.m. and will
be free of charge to the public.
This year’s Salute to Service
will be held in dedication to
the memory of Texas Governor
Dolph Briscoe who passed away
on June 27.
During World War II, Dolph
Briscoe served as China-Burma-
India theatre’s military officer
prior to his two terms as Texas
governor.
Briscoe is known as being the
only Texas governor of the era
to keep a promise of “no new
taxes,” according to the governor
website.

Finding hope
in a hopeless
situation
I can’t start this article with “the longer I live” simply
because I feel I’m still too young to use such words.
However, I can begin by saying, with every passing day,
I realize more and more the impact attitude can have on
my life.
A negative attitude will never help a helpless situation.
I’ve recently started to accept the fact that I can’t
control what happens in life, but I can control my attitude
towards what happens and make the best of every
situation, no matter how detrimental.
That tiny act can make a big difference.
What’s meant to be, will always find a way to be.
Every day we have the remarkable ability to change
our attitude, if we allow ourselves to do so. Some of you
may be thinking this isn’t so, but I can tell you, from a
very recent experience, that with a little faith, everything
is possible … including the most hopeless of hopeless
situations.
To me, attitude is everything. It can make or break a
marriage, a home, a company or even a fragile life. Attitude
is more important than money, education, the past,
present or future. Since attitude can determine and mold
our way of thinking, it’s vital to remember that we hold
the key to happiness and to the life we’ve always dreamt.
We cannot change the inevitable. We cannot change
the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot
change the choices that others make. We cannot change
our past.
However, we can change our attitude.
We can change the way we see others. We can change
how we act and react to different situations. We can
change our prayer methods and begin to ask God for
help at all times, not just when we need it.
It’s important to focus on that which is “changeable”
and to be aware that we are in charge of our attitudes.
Does everything happen for a reason? I’m not too sure
about that one. However I do believe that God strengthens
us by handing us little adventures here and there.
How would we ever know the sweet in life without the
bitter?
In life, God never promised us a day without rain,
laugher without tears or light without dark … but He did
promise us comfort in time of need, strength for a day
and power in times of help.
For me, this is enough to change my attitude … or at
least attempt to.
We’ll never know unless we try, right?
