In what many say is a dying
industry, La Prensa de San Antonio
Newspaper is <strong>the</strong> exception
<strong>and</strong> usurps <strong>the</strong> rule. Friday, July
5, <strong>the</strong> family-owned bilingual
newspaper celebrates 24 years
in <strong>the</strong> city Tino <strong>and</strong> Millie Duran
chose to call home <strong>and</strong> revive
<strong>the</strong> once all-Spanish publication.
If making nothing into something
in <strong>the</strong> beginning was difficult,
imagine what it’s like in
today’s world of high technology.
Yet <strong>the</strong>y managed to keep
<strong>the</strong>ir dream <strong>alive</strong> for nearly a
quarter century.
The patriarch of <strong>the</strong> business
has always believed in <strong>the</strong> editor
who has been <strong>and</strong> continues to be
instrumental in <strong>the</strong> success of La
Prensa <strong>and</strong> Millie remains that
inner voice. Most important is
<strong>the</strong>y both answer <strong>and</strong> believe in
God for everything that’s come
<strong>the</strong>ir way regarding La Prensa
<strong>the</strong>se past 24 years.
That belief is visible in <strong>the</strong>
publication. Since its beginning,
crime was something that
would never be seen on <strong>the</strong> paper’s
pages. Giving individuals
committing <strong>the</strong> crime a voice is
something <strong>the</strong>y felt should never
be heard. Focusing on positive
news while bringing communitybased
issues to <strong>the</strong> community
is priority for <strong>the</strong> Duran family.
Mrs. Duran has been a longtime
believer in education <strong>and</strong>
from <strong>the</strong> onset realized that this
was <strong>the</strong> silver bullet for <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n-
Hispanic community. Ano<strong>the</strong>r
realization that did not escape
her was that <strong>the</strong> community
itself needed help. That realization
led to <strong>the</strong> creation of La
Prensa Foundation in 1996. Mrs.
Duran’s dream was to provide
scholarships to those students
who she said would not get a
chance for a higher education
without that scholarship. To say
<strong>the</strong> Foundation has been a success
would be an understatement.
To date La Prensa Foundation
La Prensa was revived in 1989 <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> beginning published only positive news about <strong>the</strong> community.
has awarded an estimated $2.3
million. Once again, she believes
that this is what her Lord wanted
her to do.
That strong belief in <strong>the</strong> Lord cliché, but <strong>the</strong> Duran’s livelihood left. They published a paper on

Los inmigrantes de Estados
Unidos se encuentran reanimados
por la buena noticia que recibieron
y que podría cambiar sus
vidas. Con 68 votos de 100, la
Cámara Alta del Congreso aprobó
la reforma migratoria, promovida
por el presidente Barack Obama,
que legalizaría a 11 millones de
indocumentados. Ahora no solo
cuentan con el apoyo de políticos,
sino también de gr<strong>and</strong>es empresarios
del país.
El proyecto sostiene que los
inmigrantes indocumentados que
demuestren que han permanecido
en Estados Unidos desde antes del
31 de diciembre del 2011, y no
muestran antecedentes criminales,
podrán ingresar como inmigrantes
provisionales (RPI, por
sus siglas en inglés) durante un
lapso de 10 años.
Al cabo de 10 años podrán aplicar
para la residencia permanente,
y 3 años después podrán aplicar
para la ciudadanía.

It might take until <strong>the</strong> end of
<strong>the</strong> summer to decide which
way <strong>the</strong> streetcar will cross
downtown San Antonio, but <strong>the</strong>
decision about who will manage
<strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong>
controversial project -- as well
as everything else under <strong>the</strong> VIA
umbrella -- was much easier. The
Board came to a unanimous decision
last week.
After interviewing at least four
people for <strong>the</strong> top spot at VIA, <strong>the</strong>
Board of Trustees selected Jeff
Arndt, formerly interim president
<strong>and</strong> CEO of VIA.
“I really appreciate <strong>the</strong> opportunity
<strong>the</strong> Board of trustees
provided – <strong>and</strong> I look forward to
working with <strong>the</strong> Board to move
VIA forward for San Antonio,”
he said.
The new CEO said he’s prepared
to face any streetcar controversy
head on.
“We introduced multi modal
transportation in Houston, a
town that many said would never
have rail,” Arndt explained. “The
streetcar is a game-changer because
it will connect <strong>the</strong> major
points downtown <strong>and</strong> make it
much easier for people to get
around downtown <strong>and</strong> encourage
fur<strong>the</strong>r development.”
In <strong>the</strong> meantime, <strong>the</strong> local preferred
alternative for <strong>the</strong> streetcar
route continues to be a fluid situation
– <strong>and</strong> several of <strong>the</strong> original
six options presented have been
discarded.

“The streetcar will not go
by <strong>the</strong> Alamo or through <strong>the</strong>
[Hemisfair] park. One new option
is east-west along Commerce
<strong>and</strong> Market Streets,” he
explained.

Lo que me gusta (y no tanto) de Estados Unidos
A pesar de que llevo 30 años
viviendo en Estados Unidos, no
deja de sorprenderme cu<strong>and</strong>o
este país hace algo atrevido, promoviendo
la igualdad, rompiendo
prejuicios de décadas y sale a
defender lo moralmente correcto.
Cu<strong>and</strong>o esto ocurre, el mundo (a
pesar de su sano escepticismo,
larga memoria y malos recuerdos)
no tiene más remedio que
tomar nota y seguir el ejemplo.
Dos de estos momentos históricos
acaban de ocurrir: La Corte
Suprema de Justicia prohibió
la discriminación en contra de
parejas gay y el Senado aprobó
el proyecto de reforma migratoria
para legalizar a millones
de indocumentados. Son dos
decisiones como para quitarse el
sombrero.
Jueces y senadores están diciendo
que aquí nadie puede
estar por encima de los otros.
Ser muchos no les da el derecho
de imponerse sobre los que son
menos. Esto es lo que más me
gusta de Estados Unidos; esa idea
– expresada maravillosamente
en su acta de independencia – de
que todos somos iguales. Todos.
Lo que dijeron los jueces de la
Corte Suprema es que los gays
tienen los mismos derechos que
los heterosexuales para casarse,
ser padres, adoptar y recibir
beneficios del gobierno. Y lo
que dijeron los senadores es que
los inmigrantes indocumentados
tendrán (en 13 años) exactamente
las mismas ventajas y oportunidades
que cualquier ciudadano
estadounidense.
Esta idea de igualdad no es
nueva. El viajero francés, Alexis
de Tocqueville, visitó Estados
Unidos en 1831 y escribió en su
libro “Democracy in America”:
“Nada me llama la atención con
más fuerza que esa igualdad de
condiciones en la que vive la
gente”.
Y eso es precisamente lo que
hicieron la Corte Suprema y el
Senado: asegurarse que gays e
inmigrantes estén en “igualdad
de condiciones” con el resto de
sus habitantes.
Hay, sin duda, un nuevo entusiasmo
por el rumbo del país
en materia de derechos civiles.
Este movimiento comenzó con
la elección en 2008 de Barack
Obama, dej<strong>and</strong>o atrás décadas
de discriminación y racismo. No
siempre resulta así, pero el concepto
central de las leyes en Estados
Unidos es que nadie te puede
hacer a un lado por tu color, tu
religión, tu país de origen o tu
orientación sexual. Y ese es un
gran punto de partida.
Estados Unidos, hacia dentro,
es una democracia vital, llena de
debates, balances y fórmulas para
enfrentar las desigualdades. Eso
me gusta. Pero no me gusta cu<strong>and</strong>o
abusa de su poder hacia fuera.
Aquí hay dos graves ejemplos de
ese abuso. Por más discursos y
negativas que dé el gobierno del
presidente Obama, era imposible
que no abundaran las acusaciones
de que es el “Big Bro<strong>the</strong>r”
cu<strong>and</strong>o se reveló que su Agencia
de Seguridad Nacional obtuvo en
marzo pasado 97,000 millones de
datos provenientes del espionaje
en celulares y computadoras en
todo el mundo, según la información
que el exempleado de la
CIA, Edward Snowden, dio al
diario The Guardian.
Entiendo el temor de Estados
Unidos a otro ataque terrorista
como el del 11 de septiembre de
2001. Pero espiar a amigos, aliados
y a tus propios ciudadanos no
es, precisamente, lo que se espera
de una democracia y superpotencia
como Estados Unidos.
Tampoco se explica la guerra en
Irak que se inventó el expresidente
George W. Bush. Saddam
Hussein era un tirano pero nada
tuvo que ver con el 11-S ni tenía
armas de destrucción masiva en el
momento de la invasión norteamericana
en el 2003.
Más de cuatro mil soldados
norteamericanos murieron injustificadamente
en Irak, al igual
que 113,000 civiles iraquíes. Esas
muertes se pudieron evitar, pero
Bush no quiso esperar al dictamen
final de los inspectores de
Naciones Unidas. Por eso muchos
criticaron a Estados Unidos por
ser un “bully” planetario. Lo
mejor de Estados Unidos emerge
cu<strong>and</strong>o busca la igualdad, tanto
dentro como fuera de su país.
Pero lo peor surge cu<strong>and</strong>o impone
su voluntad y su visión del
mundo a otras naciones menos

Hace poco hablaba con el director
mexicano Guillermo del
Toro, quien está promoviendo
su nueva película “Pacific Rim,”
una impactante guerra planetaria
entre monstruos contra robots
manejados por humanos.
Del Toro se fue de México
después que su padre fuera secuestrado
y no quiere volver a trabajar
ahí por temor a represalias.
Pero encontró en Estados Unidos
al aliado perfecto. Las películas
que nunca pudo hacer en México,
por problemas económicos y de
seguridad, las hace ahora en Hollywood.
Sin caer en cursilerías,
lo cierto es que Estados Unidos
le permitió hacer lo mismo que
cualquier norteamericano y le dio
las oportunidades que su país de
origen no podía ofrecerle. Hoy, su
alma de niño de 12 años, como él
dice, queda plasmada en los más
alucinantes filmes en las pantallas
de todo el mundo. ¿Qué otro país
puede ofrecerle lo mismo a un extranjero?
Sí, hay cosas que no me
gustan de Estados Unidos. Pero
no puedo dejar de admirar a este
ambicioso y generoso país, donde
vivo con total libertad y donde
nacieron mis hijos, cu<strong>and</strong>o nos
dice que todos somos iguales... y
luego lo cumple.

A new dawn for <strong>the</strong> defense of marriage

Every July Americans celebrate
our nation’s founding, but our
founders would barely recognize
today’s America. Freedom, Alexis
de Tocqueville once said, requires
virtue. On June 26, <strong>the</strong> U.S. Supreme
Court made it clear that <strong>the</strong>
pillars of both are under attack.
By a single vote, five unelected
justices determined that <strong>the</strong>y know
better than God <strong>and</strong> struck at <strong>the</strong>
heart of marriage in America.
Writing for <strong>the</strong> majority in <strong>the</strong>
Defense of Marriage Act decision,
Justice Anthony Kennedy
insisted that defining marriage as
<strong>the</strong> union of a man <strong>and</strong> woman - as
nations have since <strong>the</strong> beginning
of time - is “to impose a disadvantage,
a separate status, <strong>and</strong> so
a stigma upon all who enter into
same-sex marriages made lawful
by <strong>the</strong> unquestioned authority of
<strong>the</strong> States.” It is one thing, Justice
Antonin Scalia fired back, “for
a society to elect change; it is
ano<strong>the</strong>r for a court of law to impose
change by adjudging those
who oppose it [are] enemies of
<strong>the</strong> human race.” Chief Justice
John Roberts agreed, writing that
<strong>the</strong> definition of marriage wasn’t
driven by a “sinister motive” but
by its “role <strong>and</strong> function throughout
<strong>the</strong> history of civilization.”
The Court can declare same-sex
“marriage” a legal right in <strong>the</strong>
eyes of government, but judges
cannot make it morally right in
<strong>the</strong> hearts of <strong>the</strong> people. This is an
institution that carries God’s own
signature. Even absent any faith,
<strong>the</strong> natural order proves <strong>the</strong> only
successful model for civilization
is natural marriage. In California,
voters already understood what
was at stake. In two separate
referendums, <strong>the</strong>y flooded <strong>the</strong>
ballots for marriage, winning a
constitutional amendment in 2008
in <strong>the</strong> largest state in America. For
five years, <strong>the</strong> Left has battled to
tear down this monument to democracy
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural family.
California Governor Jerry Brown,
ignoring his people - <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>
law - took a page from President
Obama’s school of defiance <strong>and</strong>
refused to defend <strong>the</strong> amendment
in court. Left without options, <strong>the</strong>
proponents of Proposition 8 took
it upon <strong>the</strong>mselves to protect it.
The Supreme Court, in a profoundly
disturbing decision, ruled
that <strong>the</strong>se voters lacked <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ing
to represent a state amendment
that more than 7,000,000
Californians passed. The Proposition
8 decision sets a disturbing
precedent for a nation of sovereign
people.
Fortunately, conservative leaders
across our country aren’t about
to st<strong>and</strong> by as <strong>the</strong> Court ab<strong>and</strong>ons
<strong>the</strong> cornerstone of American
government. In interview after
interview, tweet after tweet, <strong>the</strong>
message echoed from governor’s
mansions to congressional floors:
we are not giving up. It started
with Congresswoman Michele
Bachmann (R-Minn.) <strong>and</strong> flooded
<strong>the</strong> wires since <strong>the</strong>n. “No man, not
even a Supreme Court, can undo
what a holy God has instituted.”
Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kans.)
vowed to lead <strong>the</strong> fight for a
Federal Marriage Amendment.
Governor Mike Pence (R-Ind.)
said he would use today’s rulings
as motivation to work even harder
for a state marriage amendment.
The Left will say that we are
on <strong>the</strong> wrong side of history, but
Stop enslaving

We talk about being free in
<strong>the</strong> U.S., but are we really free?
Do you feel free? Do you see
freedom exhibited among our
most powerful <strong>and</strong> privileged?
Do you think our ultra-partisan
legislators are free? Do you
think our addicted <strong>and</strong> self-indulgent
sports heroes are free?
When a Gallup poll tells us that
almost 50 percent of people in
<strong>the</strong> U.S. are not engaged in <strong>the</strong>ir
jobs, are we free? I submit that
most of us enslave ourselves
<strong>and</strong> don’t even realize we are
doing it.
People complain that our
freedoms are disappearing. In
<strong>the</strong> business world, in healthcare,
<strong>and</strong> in education we constantly
hear grumbles that <strong>the</strong>
government <strong>and</strong>/or <strong>the</strong> bad
economy places constraints
<strong>and</strong> limitations on us. As we
approach July Fourth, when
Americans celebrate our nation’s
independence, perhaps
we should pause <strong>and</strong> consider
how we ourselves—independent
from outside entities—
limit our own individual <strong>and</strong>
collective freedom. We live
in a nation with extraordinary
wealth <strong>and</strong> opportunity, yet we
make “choices that limit our
choices” every day. It is easy
to point <strong>the</strong> finger elsewhere
<strong>and</strong> blame o<strong>the</strong>rs for enslaving
us, but that only exaggerates
our dissatisfaction. It makes
us feel even more helpless <strong>and</strong>
hopeless—victims of our own
expectations.
The truth—paradoxical as
it might seem—is this: Having
fewer options can open a
wellspring of innovation <strong>and</strong>
creativity as we seek to explore
those that are available to us
(instead of focusing on those
that aren’t). Think about how
much easier it is to shop for
clothing in small boutiques than
in big stores, for example. Too
many choices overwhelm <strong>and</strong>
frustrate you. Too much freedom
makes you sluggish <strong>and</strong>
complacent. Limits, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r
h<strong>and</strong>, get you focused. When
you have <strong>the</strong> right attitude <strong>and</strong>
<strong>the</strong> right tools, constraints can
bring <strong>the</strong> gift of innovation <strong>and</strong>
action.
Here is our choice: We can
engage with each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> with
our environments in ways that
generate creative options for
action. We can choose to focus
on possibility <strong>and</strong> to adapt to
<strong>the</strong> world as it is, ra<strong>the</strong>r than
whining about <strong>the</strong> way we wish
it could be. We can st<strong>and</strong> in inquiry
<strong>and</strong> create a world that is
full of hope <strong>and</strong> energy. How?
We can engage in Adaptive
Action <strong>and</strong> follow three very
simple rules.
Adaptive Action is a threequestion
practice that puts you
in control, even in <strong>the</strong> most
uncertain situations. What?
helps you notice what is happening
in <strong>the</strong> world around
you, so you see openings you
might have missed. So what?
breaks through habits <strong>and</strong> assumptions
so you can explore
opportunities you never would
have imagined. Now what?
moves you out of helplessness
<strong>and</strong> into action. As you act, <strong>the</strong>
patterns around you shift, <strong>and</strong>
you begin your freeing cycle of
inquiry again. What? So what?
Now what?
Even <strong>the</strong> best Adaptive Action
can derail when judgment,
defensiveness, or conflict cloud
perceptions. If my answer to
What? focuses on <strong>the</strong> worst in
o<strong>the</strong>rs, defending myself, or
reinforcing conflict, <strong>the</strong>n Adaptive
Action merely streng<strong>the</strong>ns
patterns that enslave me. To
avoid <strong>the</strong>se traps, I can follow
three very simple rules.
Rule 1: Turn judgment into
curiosity. Judgment, even when
it is true, blocks choice. It locks
me into anger or bias. At <strong>the</strong>
same time, it limits <strong>the</strong> amount
of freedom I am willing to give
to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. When I assume my
coworker is competing with me,
that he isn’t working as hard
as I am, that he wants my job,
I’m stuck in a negative world
of my own creation. If, on <strong>the</strong>
o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, I am curious about
his motivations <strong>and</strong> ask about
his expectations, <strong>the</strong>n I open
my choices <strong>and</strong> his to explore
opportunities for shared underst<strong>and</strong>ing
or action. As a boss,
curiosity creates employee engagement.
As a parent, it opens
honest affection. As a citizen,
it supports civil discourse. As
a world neighbor, it dissolves
xenophobia. Curiosity breeds
freedom.
Rule 2: Turn defensiveness
into self-reflection. Roosevelt
told us that <strong>the</strong> “only thing
we have to fear is fear itself.”
Fear leads me to retreat, dig in,
avoid engagement, <strong>and</strong> focus on
building or maintaining boundaries
to defend myself. Those
boundaries hold me hostage
because <strong>the</strong>y restrain <strong>the</strong> very
freedom <strong>the</strong>y were designed to
create. Everything I invest to
defend myself from economic,
social, personal, political, <strong>and</strong>
physical threats builds walls
that constrain my choices over
time. While I need to be safe,
I also can explore o<strong>the</strong>r, more
freeing ways to meet basic
needs. I practice ultimate freedom
when I challenge myself.
I exp<strong>and</strong> my horizons when
I reflect on my own capacity
to grow in new ways <strong>and</strong> to
see <strong>and</strong> act differently. Selfreflection
breeds freedom.
Rule 3: Turn conflict into
shared inquiry. When I choose
conflict—especially conflict
that is prolonged <strong>and</strong>
profound—I choose slavery.
Whatever I invest in anger <strong>and</strong>
offensive action, I am stealing
from positive passion <strong>and</strong> possibility.
Even when my enemy
is not immediately willing to
share in inquiry, I can increase
my own freedom by opening
opportunities for dialogue. I
ask myself, What is a question
that we can pursue toge<strong>the</strong>r? So
what options for action might
serve us both? Now what path
will lead us forward toge<strong>the</strong>r?
Shared inquiry frees us from
ties of history <strong>and</strong> frustration.
Shared inquiry breeds freedom.

of your self-designed constraints.
There’s nothing my
Adaptive Action can do about
that. But this week, as you
are thankful for <strong>the</strong> freedom
granted by our forefa<strong>the</strong>rs centuries
ago, I invite you to think
about <strong>the</strong> freedom you can create
every day for yourself <strong>and</strong>
o<strong>the</strong>rs. Can Adaptive Action,
curiosity, self-reflection, <strong>and</strong>
shared inquiry help us discover
a path toward freedom that does
not depend on <strong>the</strong> choices of
o<strong>the</strong>rs? Are you willing to give
it a try?

debería pagar su multa inicial
($500), su formulario 1-765
($380), su toma de huellas digitales
($85), lo que suma un total
de $965 por persona.
“No deben confiarse en otras
personas, siempre deben investigar
bien lo que verdaderamente
deben pagar”, aconsejó el abogado.
“Esos pagos son exclusivamente
del USCIS y son actuales,
pueden cambiar a lo largo de diez
años”, añadió.
Si los 11 millones de indocumentados
calificaran para legalizar
su estancia en el país, USCIS
recibiría $10,615 millones.
De igual manera, los inmigrantes
indocumentados deberán
cumplir con los requisitos necesarios
para poder calificar.
El proyecto aún no está finalizado,
pues deberá pasar por
la Cámara de Representantes,
en donde un gran número de
los republicanos se encuentran
opuestos y no consideran posible
la “amnistía” a “criminales”.
“Algunos republicanos planean
fortificar más la frontera porque
creen que los indocumentados
son criminales que deben pagar
sus cuentas”, señaló el abogado
González.
Después del primero pago, que
tiene una duración de 10 años, el
indocumentado deberá renovar
su estatus migratorio y volver a
pedir autorización para quedarse
en el país.
La renovación tendrá un costo
de $965 nuevamente, y después
de los 10 años cumplidos y sin
ningún antecedente criminal, el
inmigrante podrá aplicar para

la residencia, el cual tendrá un
costo aproximado de $2,500.
Finalmente, después de 5 años
el inmigrante podrá pedir su
ciudadanía, el cual se estima que
actualmente tendría un precio de
$680 por persona.
“Esto solo es un costo estimado
de lo que el inmigrante podría terminar
pag<strong>and</strong>o por su ciudadanía,
lo que sería a lo largo de 13 años”,
afirma el experto en migración.
De acuerdo al abogado
González, por ahora no deben
pagar nada ni enviar sus documentos
a ningún lugar, ya que el
Congreso aún no ha aprobado la
reforma.
“Cualquier persona que ofrezca
la residencia por medio de la reforma

to area graduates

IBC Bank-San Antonio is promoting
higher education by
awarding a combined $18,000
in scholarships to 18 area high
school graduates as <strong>the</strong>y embark
upon college <strong>and</strong> a new chapter
of <strong>the</strong>ir adult lives. The students
were awarded <strong>the</strong> A.R. Sanchez,
Sr. Memorial Scholarship Award
at a citywide reception Thursday,
June 27 at IBC Bank-San Antonio’s
Nakoma branch located off
U.S. Highway 281.
IBC Bank-San Antonio began
this market-wide scholarship
initiative in 2001 to provide <strong>the</strong>
opportunity for higher education
to youth from low to moderateincome
households. Born into
a humble family, Antonio R.
Sanchez, Sr., <strong>the</strong> namesake
of <strong>the</strong> scholarship award <strong>and</strong>
<strong>the</strong> founder of IBC Bank, was
a strong supporter of making
higher education available to
those interested in bettering <strong>the</strong>ir
lives. Sanchez’s commitment to
<strong>the</strong> power of learning lives on in
<strong>the</strong> A.R. Sanchez Scholarship
Award, which is bestowed annually
upon deserving high school
seniors in South Texas <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>
upper Gulf Coast area.

skin safe <strong>and</strong> beautiful

This last weekend’s scorching
triple digit temperatures should
make it pretty clear that summer
has hit San Antonio with a
vengeance. Unfortunately, this
season is going to be a very trying
time for skin <strong>and</strong> hair. Even
<strong>the</strong> early months of <strong>the</strong> season
have beat upon <strong>the</strong> city with full
force <strong>and</strong> it’s only going to get
hotter! As <strong>the</strong> largest organ of
our bodies, it is vital that we take
good care of our skin <strong>and</strong> keep
it protected.
La Prensa has done some
unscientific research <strong>and</strong> has created
a list of some helpful hints
<strong>and</strong> products to keep your skin
clean, radiant <strong>and</strong> protected this
summer season.
Sunscreen is a MUST: The
American Academy of Dermatology
recommends using a
broad spectrum sunscreen with
NO less than Sun Protection
Factor (SPF) 15. If you want
a sunscreen without <strong>the</strong> icky
touristy smell or greasy feel, try
L’Oreal Sublime Sun Sheer Protect
Sunscreen Oil. It ranges from
SPF 15 all <strong>the</strong> way to SPF 50 <strong>and</strong>

Keep it clean: With increased
heat, comes more sweating:

impossible not to sweat walking
outside in Texas, <strong>the</strong>re is a way
to keep skin clean <strong>and</strong> less prone

Tea Tree Oil: This oil is a
powerhouse. It can be used directly
on insect bites, blemishes
<strong>and</strong> rashes for instant relief. It’s
also an antifungal <strong>and</strong> kills
lice. However, <strong>the</strong> overpowering
woodsy smell repels many
people. Buy it at Sprouts Food
store or Walgreen’s at about $10
a bottle.

An inexpensive, refreshing way
to keep skin cool is peppermint.

Fire Chief Hood responds to
Arizona’s fallen firefighters

Firefighters face death every
time <strong>the</strong>y are called into action—
it goes along with <strong>the</strong> nature of
what <strong>the</strong>y do <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> price <strong>the</strong>y
are willing to pay to keep us safe.
Nineteen firefighters from <strong>the</strong>
town of Prescott, Ariz., known as
<strong>the</strong> Granite Mountain Hotshots,
paid that price in <strong>the</strong> Yarnell Hill
fire on Sunday.
The blaze was believed to
have started by a lightning strike
on Friday <strong>and</strong> by Sunday it had
scorched over 6,000 acres <strong>and</strong> destroyed
more than 50 structures,
according to local officials.
By Tuesday local officials had
confirmed <strong>the</strong> blaze threatened
over 250 homes while 700 Yarnell
residents had been evacuated.
The Granite Mountain Hotshots
were among <strong>the</strong> elite. The death
of <strong>the</strong> men is <strong>the</strong> country’s biggest
loss of firefighters in a wildfire
over <strong>the</strong> past 80 years.
The 1933 Griffith Park blaze
in Los Angeles, which killed
29, is <strong>the</strong> only wildfire to have

Alguna vez te has preguntado:
¿Por qué mi casa es un desastre
si me la paso limpi<strong>and</strong>o?
Yo creo que a muchos nos pasa,
sobre todo a los hogareños y a
quienes tienen hijos.
Lo peor en este tipo de situaciones
es que uno recoge lo
que le toca en casa, pero jamás
hará algo que no le corresponde
simplemente porque no forma
parte de su labor en el hogar.
Durante los últimos 4 años he
vivido con compañeras de cuarto,
y para mí no existe mucha
diferencia a comparación a mi
vida en casa con mis hermanos.
Cu<strong>and</strong>o vivía con mi familia,
siempre sucedía algo para que
mis hermanos no cooperaran
con los trastes sucios o para que
no tendieran su cama. Se tenían
que ir a la escuela temprano, o
tenían algún compromiso “muy
importante”, pero nunca contaban
con el tiempo suficiente
para limpiar sus cosas.
Por otro lado, mis compañeras
de cuarto tampoco tienen
tiempo para recoger un plato,
pues una de ellas tiene que ir a
la escuela desde temprano y la
otra trabaja todo el día.
También hubo una temporada
en que mis hermanos vivieron
conmigo aquí en San Antonio
y la casa era un desastre. Esto
se debía a que no había una autoridad
fija en el hogar, en este
caso me refiero a mis padres.
El problema es que no solo
me han hecho la vida de cuadritos
a mí con ese detalle de la
limpieza, sino que yo también
se lo he hecho a alguien más.
Cu<strong>and</strong>o yo iba a universidad,
mis compañeras de cuarto eran
mayores que yo y estoy segura
que no me soportaban por el
desastre que tenía en mis cosas,
y por no haberme tomado el
tiempo de ayudar a limpiar en el
que era nuestro departamento.
Asimismo, siempre estuve
acostumbrada a que me lavaran,
plancharan e hicieran de todo
en mi casa, con mi familia, por
lo que difícilmente obedecía
a mi mamá cu<strong>and</strong>o me pedía
que le ayudara en la limpieza
del hogar.
Como esta situación existen
muchas, y por lo general no
nos damos cuenta de que nosotros
mismos somos quienes
creamos esa persona que somos
ahora.
Con el paso del tiempo nos
suceden cosas que nos cambian
y nos hacen entender lo que no
entendíamos años atrás.
La solución que yo encontré
a mi problema se llama
paciencia. La paciencia y la
tolerancia son factores que
me han ayudado a comprender
que no todos somos iguales, y
que quizá yo afecté a alguien
más por haberme comportado
irresponsable.

Just a Thought: 100-year-old
William Sinkin
For 11 weeks I have been
writing about local <strong>and</strong> national
Hispanic icons I have interviewed
or known for years. This week
we take a turn to someone non-
Hispanic who has literally been
around as an icon for 100 years.
He is known as a community
activist for equality, international
cooperation <strong>and</strong> alternative energy
in San Antonio. It is none
o<strong>the</strong>r than William Sinkin better
known as Bill.
In May Mr. Sinkin celebrated
his 100th birthday at <strong>the</strong> Skyline
at <strong>the</strong> University of <strong>the</strong> Incarnate
Word with long time <strong>and</strong> short
time friends. None could legitimately
say <strong>the</strong>y knew him as a
baby since none of those present
were born <strong>the</strong>mselves. It is safe
to say he was <strong>the</strong> oldest person
in <strong>the</strong> room.
His son Lanny was by his side
<strong>the</strong> entire night as well wishers
shook his h<strong>and</strong>, visited with him
as he told stories from back in <strong>the</strong>
day. Since Lanny <strong>and</strong> I are <strong>the</strong>
same age, I commented to Lanny
that Mr. Sinkin looked better than
we did. Lanny smiled <strong>and</strong> agreed.
Anyone who was somebody
attended <strong>the</strong> celebration as well
as those of us who are still aspiring
to be somebody eventually.

Educa e Inspira.” That’s what <strong>the</strong>
paper has done, Inform, Educate
<strong>and</strong> Inspire. Publisher Tino Duran
says it better, “La Prensa
de San Antonio estuvo aquí,
está aquí ahora y estará aquí
mañana. Muchísimas gracias
de parte de La Prensa de San
Antonio y de la familia Duran y
que Dios los bendiga”.

I personally became aware of
him in <strong>the</strong> mid-nineties as a solar
energy visionary, attending a
number of luncheons <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r related
events in <strong>the</strong> last ten years at
<strong>the</strong> Pearl Stable. He talked about
solar energy long before anyone
else even thought about it.
As a Democratic Party precinct
chair for over 66 years, for <strong>the</strong>
two-step primary voting process,
he was elected a precinct chair in
1942 <strong>and</strong> stepped down in 2008.
He set a record for Bexar County.
He is well known for working
to improve <strong>the</strong> community
by opening up opportunities for
people systematically denied.
Most people are unaware he cofounded
Goodwill of San Antonio
in 1945 to help those with physical
<strong>and</strong> mental challenges to find
employment.
As Chair of <strong>the</strong> San Antonio
Housing Authority (SAHA) from
1949-53, he also worked to increase
minority participation in
local government agencies. He
hired <strong>the</strong> first woman executive
director of SAHA.
As a banker he controlled <strong>the</strong>
Texas State Bank in <strong>the</strong> late 60s
which catered to minority rep-

resentation <strong>and</strong> small business
lending. One of his many contributions
included founding <strong>the</strong> Urban
Coalition of San Antonio also
in <strong>the</strong> 60s for low income white
communities <strong>and</strong> communities of
color to address economic issues.
Mr. Sinkin is also known with
his active involvement with
HemisFair <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1968 Hemis-
Fair exposition. As a college
student in Ft. Worth at <strong>the</strong> time I
came down to visit my mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong>
for <strong>the</strong> opening celebrating <strong>the</strong>
250th anniversary of <strong>the</strong> founding
of San Antonio. I wished I had
known him <strong>the</strong>n.
In all <strong>the</strong> time I have had <strong>the</strong>
privilege to visit <strong>and</strong> converse
with him over <strong>the</strong> years, he has
been articulate <strong>and</strong> gracious to a
fault. I was privileged to cover his
95th <strong>and</strong> 98th birthdays as well as
his 100th.
Looking back at all <strong>the</strong> photos I
have taken of him since I became
a photo blogger, I am amazed
how he has not aged at all. It
must be clean living. To many
more years, I salute you Mr. Bill
Sinkin.
Anyway, as always, what I
write is “Just a Thought.”

The biggest loss of firefighters
in U.S. history was 343, killed
in <strong>the</strong> 9/11 attack on New York.
“When you lose a firefighter,
you lose someone you work
with24 hours a day, you lose
somebody that you work with
a third of your life that you see
get married, have kids, lose <strong>the</strong>ir
parents, retire,” said San Antonio
Fire Chief Charles N. Hood who
worked in Phoenix before coming
to San Antonio.
“This is a bro<strong>the</strong>rhood unlike
any o<strong>the</strong>r, so when we suffer
loss, <strong>the</strong> loss is significant,” Hood
added.
The tragedy in Yarnell killed
about 20 percent of <strong>the</strong> Prescott
Fire Department which had a total
of 95 active firemen.
“The devastation that <strong>the</strong>se
guys faced, <strong>the</strong>ir fire chief <strong>and</strong>
community are facing…I can’t
even imagine <strong>and</strong> you just pray it
never happens to you,” Hood said.
On Monday, it was a somber
scene as a long line of vans from a

<strong>the</strong> bodies of <strong>the</strong> brave men lost
in <strong>the</strong> inferno as fires continued to
torch <strong>the</strong> town of Yarnell.

The city of Prescott, Ariz., has
named <strong>the</strong> 19 firefighters killed
Sunday. They are;

on immigration
In fairness, Speaker John
Boehner has never been an outspoken
proponent of an expansive
legalization of <strong>the</strong> undocumented.
None<strong>the</strong>less, many were shocked
to see <strong>the</strong> chief Republican congressional
leader decisively reject
<strong>the</strong> Senate-passed immigration
bill. Like many past Speakers,
he has also assumed an informal
role as his party’s national leader
<strong>and</strong> helped define what his party
st<strong>and</strong>s for.
Some might see Boehner’s opposition
to <strong>the</strong> immigration bill
as a valiant, honorable adherence
to ideological principles. O<strong>the</strong>rs
view it as disappointing rigidness
that has dashed hopes. In any
event, strategic planning undoubtedly
played a role in his decision.
When an action’s costs are
tangible <strong>and</strong> immediate, whereas
its benefits are uncertain <strong>and</strong>
distant, it makes sense to avoid
taking that action. Though some
hoped that <strong>the</strong> GOP’s efforts to
improve its long-term electoral
prospects would sway Boehner
to permit (though not endorse)
an immigration reform, he has
declined, at least partially due
to fears of prompting a quick
backlash from his own party’s
base. An inescapable lesson of <strong>the</strong>
midterm elections of 2010 is that
even well-regarded Republican
legislators can be ousted for deviations
from certain ideological
principles.
Most Congresspersons nowadays
represent districts where one
party has a decisive numerical
advantage in voter registration,
which means that Republican
House members representing
very conservative districts fear
party primaries more than general
elections. They do not want to
lose <strong>the</strong>ir jobs for failing to oppose
an immigration reform more
forcefully. Nei<strong>the</strong>r does Boehner,
who publically recognized <strong>the</strong> potential
threat to his Speakership.
Their concerns are reasonable.
The Tea Party is only dormant.
In 2009, <strong>the</strong> ‘spark’ that
galvanized <strong>the</strong> movement was
<strong>the</strong> American Recovery Act <strong>and</strong>
later <strong>the</strong> Affordable Care Act,
both seen as affronts to fiscal
restraint <strong>and</strong> small government.
Even nowadays, some conservatives
may feel that <strong>the</strong>ir causes
are losing ground. Section 3
of DOMA has been declared
unconstitutional, <strong>the</strong> Affordable
Care Act is still law, <strong>the</strong> federal
deficit remains high, <strong>the</strong> gradual
regulation of greenhouse gases
continues, <strong>and</strong> a gun control bill
was only recently kept at bay by
a filibuster. A successful immigration
reform might become <strong>the</strong>
spark that rallies <strong>the</strong> Tea Party
faithful in 2013. None<strong>the</strong>less,
calls for a legalization have been
growing, even within <strong>the</strong> GOP.
To <strong>the</strong> surprise of many, including
this author, <strong>the</strong> Republican
National Committee’s report in
March encouraged Republicans
to “embrace <strong>and</strong> champion comprehensive
immigration reform.
If we do not, our Party’s appeal
will continue to shrink to its core

constituencies only.” The second
sentence comes across as prophetic
<strong>and</strong> some hoped it would
help persuade Boehner to break
<strong>the</strong> ‘Hastert Rule.’ Named after
former-Speaker Dennis Hastert
(1999-2006), this informal rule
says a bill may only pass <strong>the</strong>
House if a majority of <strong>the</strong> majority
votes for it. To abide by <strong>the</strong>
Hastert Rule <strong>and</strong> pass <strong>the</strong> Senate’s
immigration bill would require a
majority of <strong>the</strong> House Republican
Conference to approve granting
provisional legal status to millions
of undocumented persons—an
extremely unlikely scenario. A
more realistic scenario, however
is for Boehner to break <strong>the</strong>
Haspert Rule, as he has done on
three notable occasions this year,
to <strong>the</strong> chagrin of many of his colleagues.
A minority of Republicans <strong>and</strong>
a majority of Democrats voted
through <strong>the</strong> “fiscal cliff” deal to
avoid fiscal catastrophe, reauthorized
VAWA (Violence Against
Women’s Act) without a controversial
amendment espoused
by some conservatives, <strong>and</strong> also
approved $50 billion in aid for
people <strong>and</strong> areas affected by Hurricane
S<strong>and</strong>y. Respectively, 85,
87, <strong>and</strong> 49 House Republicans
voted for <strong>the</strong>se three important
bills.
Boehner merits thanks for <strong>the</strong>ir
eventual passage, since no floor
vote would have taken place
without his consent. Immigration
reform, however, is evidently a
‘red-line’ for Boehner.
Barshop Institute gains
$3.4 million from NIH

Alkek Foundation awarded a
$200,000 grant to support <strong>the</strong>
purchase of instrumentation for
<strong>the</strong> University’s Environmental
Science Program.
The Alkek Foundation grant
will provide necessary resources
for upper-level student instruction
<strong>and</strong> will give students better
h<strong>and</strong>s-on, real-world experience
that will make <strong>the</strong>m more competitive
in <strong>the</strong> job market. The
new equipment will include a
$50,000 spectroradiometer,
ground penetrating radar <strong>and</strong> resistivity
systems, hyperspectral
satellite imagery <strong>and</strong> advanced
microscopes, as well as o<strong>the</strong>r instrumentation
used to study soil,
water, vegetation <strong>and</strong> minerals.
“Hundreds of students will
benefit from this equipment each
year,” said University President
Thomas Mengler. “We are
grateful for yet ano<strong>the</strong>r fantastic

welcome Dr. Forrest F. Aven,
Jr., as dean of <strong>the</strong> H-E-B School
of Business & Administration.
Prior to UIW, Aven spent 23
years at <strong>the</strong> University of Houston-Downtown
(UHD).
While at UHD, Aven served
as <strong>the</strong> interim dean for <strong>the</strong>
College of Business, associate
dean, department chair for
Management <strong>and</strong> Marketing
<strong>and</strong> was granted professor of
Management status. Aven has
also published several articles
relating to compensation, organizational
commitment <strong>and</strong>
gift from <strong>the</strong> Alkek Foundation,
whose generosity is evident
on our campus <strong>and</strong> among our
alumni.”
The Environmental Science
Program, first offered in Fall
2011, was designed to address
<strong>the</strong> urbanization issues <strong>and</strong>
depletion of natural resources
connected to an ever-increasing
global population. Students
receive a strong foundation of
scientific knowledge <strong>and</strong> professional
skills, which enable <strong>the</strong>m
to assess a variety of environmental
issues <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>and</strong>
implement solutions. The degree
plan allows students to gain
experience in a specific area of
interest – such as geosciences,
chemistry or ecology – with
both Bachelor of Science <strong>and</strong>
Bachelor of Arts options.
The importance of <strong>the</strong> program
is validated by <strong>the</strong> U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics,
which predicts an increased dem<strong>and</strong>
of 19 percent for environmental
scientists <strong>and</strong> specialists
between 2012 <strong>and</strong> 2018. That
rate of increase is much higher
than <strong>the</strong> average increase expected
for all o<strong>the</strong>r occupations
during <strong>the</strong> same time frame.
“The Environmental Science
faculty is extremely grateful for
<strong>the</strong> Alkek Foundation grant,”
said Melissa Karlin, Ph.D.,
Assistant Professor of Environmental
Science at St. Mary’s.
“This grant will provide instrumentation
that will open up
incredible opportunities for our
students to become involved in
research projects, collect <strong>and</strong>
analyze rigorous quantitative
data, <strong>and</strong> team up with faculty
on student-authored research
publications.”
The Albert <strong>and</strong> Margaret
Alkek Foundation gave about
$3.3 million to St. Mary’s over
<strong>the</strong> years. Albert B. Alkek, who
attended St. Mary’s, was a longtime
supporter of his alma mater
<strong>and</strong> a member of <strong>the</strong> Board of
Trustees. His name graces <strong>the</strong>
University’s business building.

director of <strong>the</strong> Barshop Institute
<strong>and</strong> professor of pharmacology
in <strong>the</strong> university’s School of
Medicine. “It’s a real vote of
confidence in <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong>
aging program at our Health Science
Center.”

of cellular <strong>and</strong> structural biology
in <strong>the</strong> School of Medicine,

“This is <strong>the</strong> largest training

Graduate students pursuing
doctoral degrees will be supported
for up to five years <strong>and</strong>
postdoctoral fellows for up to
three years, Dr. Austad said.
Last August, <strong>the</strong> Barshop Institute
announced that a $200,000
gift from <strong>the</strong> Glenn Foundation
for Medical Research would
fund two fellows to participate
in <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. program focused on
<strong>the</strong> biology of aging. The NIH
grant increases that momentum.

will help us attract some of <strong>the</strong>
best minds in <strong>the</strong> country, especially
in concert with <strong>the</strong> Glenn

As of Wednesday, <strong>the</strong> Spurs
were still in <strong>the</strong> hunt for former
No. 1 NBA Draft pick Greg Oden,
according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
During his five injury-riddled
seasons in Portl<strong>and</strong>, Oden played
in less 20 percent of available
games. When healthy, he averaged
9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds <strong>and</strong> 1.4
blocks in 82 games.
Manu <strong>and</strong> Splitter re-signs with Spurs, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r rumors

The San Antonio Spurs wasted
no time in resigning center Tiago
Splitter according Yahoo! Sports
who reported that <strong>the</strong> team <strong>and</strong>
Splitter are finalizing a four-year,
$36 million deal that will keep him
a Spur through <strong>the</strong> 2016-17 season.
If or when <strong>the</strong> deal is complete
he will be <strong>the</strong> third highest paid
player on <strong>the</strong> roster.
It comes as no surprise considering
<strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y’ve invested in
developing Splitter into a hopeful
force down low.
Splitter doesn’t do anything outst<strong>and</strong>ing—he’s
not a big time shot
blocker , scorer or rebounder—but
he does everything well <strong>and</strong> most
importantly he plays defensive
well. He’s a high-IQ player without
an ego—<strong>the</strong> prototype Spur.
In his three seasons with <strong>the</strong>
Spurs, Splitter has averaged 8.3
points, 5.1 rebounds <strong>and</strong> .6 blocks
per game. In fairness he didn’t play
much his first season so last season
is probably <strong>the</strong> best indicator of
what to expect production-wise.
Last season he averaged 10.3
points, 6.4 rebounds <strong>and</strong> .8 blocks
a game. As Tim Duncan’s role
becomes minimized his scoring
<strong>and</strong> rebounds are likely to increase,
but will likely never be a dominant
force like Duncan.
He was <strong>the</strong> team’s second leading
rebounder last season, but all
things considered <strong>the</strong> Spurs may
have overpaid for Splitter.
However, don’t rule out Splitter
being traded. Huffington Post
sports columnnist Jordan Schultz
tweeted on Monday that <strong>the</strong> Phoenix
Suns were in discussions about
a sign-<strong>and</strong>-trade for Splitter in
exchange for Marcin Gortat.
Manu back for two more
Manu Ginobili tweeted on
Wednesday he is going to stay
with <strong>the</strong> Spurs for two more years.
“Thrilled to announce that as I
always hoped, I'm gonna stay with
<strong>the</strong> @spurs for two more years.
#gospursgo,” his tweet read.
As of Wednesday <strong>the</strong> Spurs
made no official announcement
acknowledging <strong>the</strong> tweet.
Did anyone really think Ginobili
would play for ano<strong>the</strong>r team? He
is <strong>the</strong> epitome of what <strong>the</strong> Spurs
represent <strong>and</strong> a fan favorite despite
his lackluster performance in <strong>the</strong>
NBA Finals.
Ginobili can’t sign until July 10
due to league rules, but it is ultimately
a lock that <strong>the</strong> Argentinian
will finish his career with <strong>the</strong> team
who drafted <strong>the</strong> 25-year old rookie
in 2002.
Ginobili, who turns 36 later this
month, averaged 11.8 points this
past season, his lowest scoring
average since his rookie campaign
in 2002-03.
Rumor time
As of Wednesday, players rumored
to be targeted by <strong>the</strong> Spurs
included Kyle Korver, Greg Oden,
Zaza Pachulia, Andre Kirilenko <strong>and</strong>
Monta Ellis.
Gary Neal is also still a restricted
free agent that could be a possibility.

la cual es sede del equipo “Connecticut
Sun”, propiedad de la Tribu

La presencia de la comisionada
Richie, en el AT&T Center, fue
para participar en la campaña del
medio ambiente “Go Green Night”,
que patrocina la WNBA y equipos
asociados. Este programa tiene como

La progresiva liga de béisbol
independiente Tex-Mex Independent
Baseball League (Tex-
Mex IBL), con su presidente y
fundador, el beisbolista Gilbert
Rodríguez (jugador del equipo
tricampeón Tecolotes) ,estará
de manteles largos este sábado
6 de julio celebr<strong>and</strong>o la Independencia
de los Estados Unidos
mediante su tradicional Juego de
Estrellas.
En esta ocasión, por el incremento
de equipos en Tex-
Mex IBL, el partido de estrellas
contará con la participación de
jugadores sobresalientes que
militan en los equipos de la zona
norte y sur.
El evento comenzará con la
competencia de cuadrangulares
(Home Run Derby) en el horario
de las 3 p.m.
El partido se ha programado
para dar comienzo a las 7 p.m.
En la división norte juegan
los clubes The Wolfpack, que
es el líder y tiene su sede en el
Rosedale Park, cuyo manager y
jugador Johnny Contreras Jr. será
el dirigente.
También jugarán Rockies, Red
Sox, Los Cerveceros, Storm,
Desperados y Rangers. Wolfpack

“La competencia de semifinales
está bastante cerrada, la UDG tiene
que aprovechar su oportunidad para
remontar el marcador, mientras que
Halcones, con la anotación de más
goles, no tendrá que batallar para
lograr su pase a la gran final. Por su
lado, El Valle e Independiente se
verán forzados a jugar un partido
con bastante disciplina deportiva y

Los partidos de semifinal se
pudieron jugar sin riesgo en Amistad
Park, ya que fue poca la lluvia que
cayó el domingo por la mañana.
Por tradición, Liga Latina, bajo la
presidencia del señor De La Rosa,
nunca ha dejado de practicar el
balompié dominical independiente,
ya que él gusta que se juegue al estilo
del fútbol inglés, que se juega en
todo tipo de clima.
David Brito es el capitán del equipo El Valle que eliminó al duro
rival Real Lobos. Brito, con cuatro goles anotados en la temporada,

at <strong>the</strong> México City
Arena on December 4 as part
of <strong>the</strong> NBA Global Games
schedule for <strong>the</strong> 2013-14 Season.
The matchup in México
City will be <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>the</strong>
Silver <strong>and</strong> Black will play a
regular season game outside

NBA’s second regular season
game in México City following
a contest between <strong>the</strong>

in México overall, <strong>the</strong> most
NBA matchups held in any

desde kindergarten en la escuela
primaria Woodlawn Elementary.
Y recientemente se graduaron de
la escuela preparatoria Thomas
Jefferson High School acá en San
Antonio.
Y ahora, las dos amigas y compañeras
de aula se convertirán en
dos estudiantes universitarias de
primera generación el próximo
otoño.
Durante todos los años de su
amistad, Megan y Maritza se
han acompañado a través de las
dificultades en la vida, siempre
animándose la una a la otra y
recordándose que el éxito académico
solo se logra a través de
esfuerzo y dedicación.
Y una vez más, juntas, estas
exitosas estudiantes encontraron
su camino a la universidad a
través de la asistencia ofrecida

su pasión por los negocios comenzó
cu<strong>and</strong>o su padre, un aspirante
a empresario, compartió
su interés en iniciar una empresa
de soldadura.
"Mi padre siempre quiso comenzar
un negocio y yo siempre
pensaba: ‘yo puedo ayudarle a
manejarlo’", compartió Maritza.
Su amor por su familia y su
deseo de ayudar a darle inicio
a este negocio la ha orientado
hacia su interés por un título de
Administración de Empresas.
Así, Maritza también comenzará
su primer año en la universidad,
University of Texas at San
Antonio dentro de unos meses
este año.
Ambas estudiantes comparten
la importancia de la influencia
que su amistad ha tenido en su
éxito académico, ya que se han
ayudado animándose una a la
otra a seguir sus carreras a lo
largo de los años.
"En realidad, Megan fue la que
me llevó a involucrarme con Gen
Tex. Ella se inscribió primero en
el programa durante su onceavo
año escolar. Luego, me compartió
sobre ello para que durante
mi último año de preparatoria
pudiera unirme y ser parte del
programa”, recordó Maritza.

Najim Family donates $3 million to
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio

One of San Antonio’s philanthropic
leaders, Harvey E. Najim
<strong>and</strong> The Najim Family Foundation,
demonstrated its support for The
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio
by donating $3 million, comprised
of a personal gift from Najim as
well a gift from The Najim Family
Foundation.
The donation comes just months
after <strong>the</strong> announcement of <strong>the</strong> partnership
between Baylor College
of Medicine <strong>and</strong> Texas Children’s
Hospital as well as announcements
of a $3 million gift from The USAA
Foundation <strong>and</strong> a $20 million gift
from Goldsbury Foundation.
“I spent a lot of time thinking
about this gift, which is <strong>the</strong> single
largest combined gift my foundation
<strong>and</strong> I have ever made,” said
Najim. “I strongly believe that <strong>the</strong>
Children's Hospital of San Antonio
will become <strong>the</strong> premier hospital
for children's medical care.”
The gifts will be used for construction
of <strong>the</strong> new hospital <strong>and</strong>
will be recognized in KidsSTOP
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Child Life Center in <strong>the</strong>
hospital.
KidsSTOP is <strong>the</strong> children’s outpatient
surgery center at <strong>the</strong> Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio. It is
also a convenient place for patients
to receive physician-ordered tests
<strong>and</strong> treatments that do not require
an Emergency Room visit. The
7,000 square foot area is designed
to be a warm, friendly environment
staffed by a team sensitive to <strong>the</strong>
feelings of fear <strong>and</strong> anxiety that a
child may experience during medical
treatment.
Child Life Services is a <strong>the</strong>rapeutically-based
support program
designed to decrease <strong>the</strong> stress
<strong>and</strong> anxiety accompanying hospitalization
through play <strong>and</strong> learning
experiences. The Child Life
Center which will house Child Life
Services at <strong>the</strong> Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio, will be a 4,000
square foot area which includes a
cyber café, library, activity area,
classroom <strong>and</strong> kitchenette. This
area will be used for special events,
celebrations, holiday parties <strong>and</strong>
group activities. KidsSTOP <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>
Child Life Center will be located on
<strong>the</strong> first floor of <strong>the</strong> hospital.
“We are grateful to Harvey
Najim <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Najim Family Foundation
for this generous gift,” said
John Bel, president for <strong>the</strong> Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio
Foundation. “Their commitment to
<strong>the</strong> children of our community will

The Najim Family Foundation
was established in December 2006
to support children’s charitable organizations
in <strong>the</strong> greater San Antonio
area. The Najim Family Foundation’s
past gifts to <strong>the</strong> Children’s
Hospital include a gift in 2007 to
support <strong>the</strong> expansion <strong>and</strong> renovation
of <strong>the</strong> NICU <strong>and</strong> its equipment;
a 2008 gift was given to purchase an
Echo Cardiograph machine; in 2009,
<strong>the</strong> foundation’s gift enabled hiring

“Gamines”, “Golfos”,
“Pungas” y “Vagos”

La caravana se organizó sola.
Nadie la convocó. Nadie la dirigió.
De todas las esquinas y
plazoletas, de todos los cines y
mercados, de todos los barrios
de la ciudad, comenzaron a
caminar. ¿Quiénes hacían esto?
Niños. Decenas de niños. Niños
pobres. Niños desamparados.
Niños que caminaban solidarios
con un rumbo fijo: “La Nueva
Jerusalén”, uno de los barrios
de la gran ciudad.
Iban para asistir al funeral de
un compañero muerto, un chico
callejero de doce años de edad
llamado Wellington Barboza. Lo
habían asesinado los narcotraficantes.
Uno más, añadido a la lista
de víctimas. Era uno de los chicos
ab<strong>and</strong>onados, de ocho a doce años
de edad, que viven en las calles de
Río de Janeiro.
Todas las gr<strong>and</strong>es ciudades
tienen sus niños pobres. Son los
huérfanos, los desheredados, los
corridos de sus casas sin amor y
sin cuidado. Irónicamente el niño
Wellington Barboza había sido
asesinado en un barrio llamado
“La Nueva Jerusalén”, el nombre
que la Biblia da a la eterna ciudad
celestial.
Estos niños brasileños, como sus
congéneres de todo el mundo, se
dedican necesariamente al delito:
al robo y al narcotráfico. Y a veces,

cometen homicidios.
En Bogotá se les llama “gamines”,
en España, “golfos”, en
otras ciudades, “pungas” o “vagos”,
pero todos por igual son víctimas
del desamor y la indiferencia. Y su
destino es la droga, la agresión, la
cárcel y la muerte.
¿Habrá algo que nosotros, los
adultos de este tiempo, podemos
hacer? Sí, lo hay. En primer lugar,
debemos reconocer la honda herida
que motiva este comportamiento.
Ellos son quienes son, y hacen lo
que hacen, porque son víctimas
de una sociedad que los ha herido,
desamparado y ab<strong>and</strong>onado.
Luego debemos levantar nuestra
voz para hacer que tomen conciencia
todos —padres, maestros, clérigos,
autoridades— de que no hay
modo de justificar el ab<strong>and</strong>ono de
nuestros niños. La realidad es que
son nuestros, y su comportamiento
refleja el mal que aflige a nuestra
sociedad.
Algo más. Padres, cuidemos con
amor y atención a los hijos que
todavía tenemos en casa. La Biblia
dice: “Y ustedes, padres, no hagan
enojar a sus hijos, sino críenlos
según la disciplina e instrucción del
Señor” (Efesios 6:4).
Pidamos de Dios la sabiduría
espiritual para librar a nuestros
hijos de la ruina moral. Si Cristo
es nuestro Señor, hará de nuestro
hogar un nido de paz. Invitémosle
a que sea el huésped invisible de
nuestro hogar. Así aseguraremos
a nuestros hijos.

siguiente caso de una mujer que
“descargó su conciencia” de manera
anónima en nuestro sitio www.
conciencia.net, autorizándonos a
que la citáramos:
Tengo veinte años, y en contados
meses voy a casarme.... Desde
hace algunos meses, mi padre ha
estado (relacionándose) con otra
mujer.... (Yo) amo a mi novio,
pero hay algo que (por) momentos
me preocupa. He tenido mucha
desconfianza de mi novio, y a
veces siento rabia con los hombres.
“Siento temor de que me pase
lo mismo que le pasa a mi mamá,
y creo que debo estar ahora más
segura... para dar el paso que he
decidido dar. ¿Qué puedo hacer?”
Este es el consejo que le dimos:
Estimada amiga:
“... ¿Alguna vez ha visto una luz
intermitente que sirve de señal de
advertencia? Pudo haberla visto
en la calle o en el techo de una
ambulancia. Esas luces intermitentes
se han diseñado para hacer
que prestemos atención y nos
percatemos de un peligro inminente.
Si aminoramos la marcha
y prestamos mucha atención,
podemos evitar el peligro. En
cambio, si pasamos por alto las
luces intermitentes y seguimos sin
tener cuidado alguno, entonces los
únicos culpables de la tragedia que
resulte somos nosotros mismos.

a ver señales de advertencia
que eran como luces
intermitentes. Creemos que si
usted insiste en casarse sin antes
haber resuelto ese problema de la

Many of <strong>the</strong> bishops in <strong>the</strong>
Catholic Church have made public
<strong>the</strong> names of suspected sexual
offenders. By contrast, <strong>the</strong>re is
not a single institution, secular or
religious, that has done likewise.
To be sure, this brazen honesty
has persuaded fair-minded people
to applaud such efforts, but o<strong>the</strong>rs,
less kind, see this as an opportunity
to exploit. For example,
today’s Journal Sentinel features
<strong>the</strong> pictures of 45 priests who at
one time or ano<strong>the</strong>r had substantiated
allegations made against
<strong>the</strong>m. This is pure hype: it was
Archbishop Dolan who posted <strong>the</strong>
names of <strong>the</strong>se priests 9 years ago.
Where are <strong>the</strong> pictures of alleged
sex offenders in non-Catholic
communities? Where is <strong>the</strong> same
level of scrutiny?
Today’s Journal Sentinel says
<strong>the</strong> bishops’ conference adopted
a charter in 2002 that addresses
<strong>the</strong> sexual abuse of minors. “How
effective that charter has been
is a matter of some debate.”
Nonsense. There is no debate:
in <strong>the</strong> past six years, <strong>the</strong> average
number of credible allegations
made against over 40,000 priests
is exactly 7.0. If <strong>the</strong> Journal Sentinel
knows of any institution with
a comparable record, it should
say so. Its comment about a 2011
gr<strong>and</strong> jury report in Philadelphia
failed to mention <strong>the</strong> 20-plus errors
that have been found, to say
nothing about <strong>the</strong> veracity of <strong>the</strong>
principal accuser: he is a congenital
liar, school dropout, thief <strong>and</strong>
drug addict.
No one disputes <strong>the</strong> timeline
of <strong>the</strong> sc<strong>and</strong>al—<strong>the</strong> mid-60s to
<strong>the</strong> mid-80s—so it makes one
wonder whe<strong>the</strong>r those who continue
to harp on this issue are
motivated by something o<strong>the</strong>r
than <strong>the</strong> wellbeing of minors.
Not only are current cases of
such abuse being ignored in
non-Catholic communities, few
are touting <strong>the</strong> reforms made
by <strong>the</strong> Catholic community as
a model for o<strong>the</strong>rs.
I know Cardinal Dolan: he is
an honest, courageous, brilliant
man of faith. He did not create
this problem; on <strong>the</strong> contrary,
he is among those who sought
to fix it.

Media blackout of
beheaded priest
It’s ei<strong>the</strong>r because <strong>the</strong> mainstream
media don’t really care
whe<strong>the</strong>r Muslims have beheaded
yet ano<strong>the</strong>r Catholic priest, or
<strong>the</strong>y just expect <strong>the</strong> followers of
Islam to act that way. Those are
<strong>the</strong> only two plausible explanations
that account for <strong>the</strong> media
blackout of what happened to
Syrian priest François Murad on
June 23.
The beheading of Fr. Murad
was not <strong>the</strong> work of some isolated
madman; ra<strong>the</strong>r, it was <strong>the</strong> work
of religious madmen, cheered on
by a crowd of Muslim fanatics.
The terrorists, Jabhat al-Nusra, an
Al-Qaeda linked group, stormed
a monastery in nor<strong>the</strong>rn Syria
where <strong>the</strong> priest was staying. As
usual, <strong>the</strong>y screamed “Allahu
Akbar” (“Allah is <strong>the</strong> greatest”)
while a kitchen knife was put
to <strong>the</strong> priest’s neck. The jihadi
group was celebrated by men <strong>and</strong>
boys who took pictures with <strong>the</strong>ir
smartphones.
A fellow Franciscan priest,
Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa,
blames those who have been
arming <strong>the</strong> extremists. But this
interpretation is incomplete: <strong>the</strong>
fact is <strong>the</strong>re are few moderates
in most of <strong>the</strong> Muslim world, so
it makes little difference who
<strong>the</strong> West arms—<strong>the</strong> results are
always <strong>the</strong> same.
It’s been a week since <strong>the</strong>
beheading of Fr. Murad, <strong>and</strong>
while reports were slowly released,
<strong>the</strong>re was plenty of time
over <strong>the</strong> weekend to report on
this insanity. Thanks to Catholic
Online, which led with <strong>the</strong>
story, as well as TheBlaze <strong>and</strong>
CNSnews, we are learning what
happened.
It remains to be seen whe<strong>the</strong>r
<strong>the</strong> big media will inform <strong>the</strong>
public about this latest act of
Muslim barbarism. President
Obama should issue a statement
as well.

El fondo para la construcción
de nuevos edificios de Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio fue incrementado
con un donativo de
3 millones de dólares aportados
por la institución de beneficencia
Najim Family Foundation.
Recibieron el donativo Bobby
Cavender y Charlie Amato en
nombre de la junta directiva de
Childrens’s Hospital of San Antonio
Foundation.
La breve ceremonia de entrega
se efectuó el lunes y para enfatizar
el noble propósito de la familia
Najim.
Asistió al acto un grupo de
niños que son atendidos allí por
diversas condiciones médicas. El
nuevo hospital, que se construye
en el mismo terreno del antiguo –
que está en proceso de demolición
para dar paso a los nuevos edificios
–, será terminado a fines del
año próximo.

En el séptimo partido de los Spurs vs. Heat, varios aficionados tuvieron la oportunidad de ver el partido
con entrada gratis en el AT&T Center. Uno de sus fans fue elegido para participar en la promoción
“H-E- B Beach Ball Mania”, en la que logró ganarse $400 en certificado de compras. Esta promoción
se estuvo realiz<strong>and</strong>o durante la temporada regular por ser H-E-B, patrocinador oficial de los Spurs.
En los festejos de “NBA Finals Watch Party”, celebrados en partidos que Spurs jugaron en la American
Airlines Arena de Miami, miles de espectadores de todas las edades disfrutaron de los atractivos. En la
foto aparecen trillizos que en primera fila celebraron cada acción ejecutada por su jugador favorito.
En el séptimo partido, en el que Spurs tuvo oportunidad de capturar su quinto campeonato, la
gerencia general presentó un concierto durante el medio tiempo. El turno fue para el popular conjunto
musical “Rotel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hot Tomatoes”, que interpretó con éxito temas de los 60’s, 70’s y 80’s.
En la subasta con motivo de la campaña de la WNBA para la
conservación del medio ambiente, el equipo Silver Stars subastó
artículos deportivos usados por jugadoras. En la foto, Ebony,
representante de Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E), presentó
un balón autografiado que fue vendido al mejor postor.
Lo recaudado fue donado al programa deportivo juvenil de la
fundación Silver <strong>and</strong> Black Give Back.
Annie Hayne, popular intérprete local, cantó el Himno Nacional
en la ceremonia del partido Silver Stars y Mercury de Phoenix,
celebrado en el AT&T Center.
La señora Sovia Laureano, quien se dijo ser fan de por vida de los
Spurs, estuvo al tanto de las acciones durante la serie final por el
campeonato de la NBA entre los Spurs y Miami Heat. “Felicito a
Spurs por su buena temporada. Si no se pudo ganar este año, ya
será el próximo”, dijo Sovia.
Chicas de la porra Stars Squad posaron con playeras que se venden en la tienda oficial ubicada
en el AT&T Center.
Fans mostraron su gran pasión por sus queridos Spurs.
Vecinos de la escuela Wheatley Middle School mostraron su apoyo a los Spurs. Esto fue durante la
visita de dignatarios a la inauguración de centro de aprendizaje que la NBA, Spurs y State Farm

210 Ceviche invade con sus
mariscos en San Antonio

Un nuevo restaurante de mariscos
ha llegado a San Antonio. Es
relativamente nuevo, y al entrar se
puede sentir el sabor de la Costa del
Pacífico de México. La alta cocina
de 210 Ceviche, ubicado en el 9502
IH-10 West, ha sido bien intercalada
con el ambiente relajado de los
mexicanos, y con el buen humor del
personal de trabajo.
El lugar está ubicado a un costado
del Taco Tote, restaurante a
donde por lo general asisten mexicanos
también.
Para comenzar, en la entrada
nos recibió una persona que nos
asignó la mesa que fuera de nuestro
agrado. Después, pude percatarme
de que había mucha gente a mí alrededor.
Por lo visto el restaurante
ha tenido mucho éxito, pues tan
solo lleva unas semanas abierto al
público.
El mesero nos trajo tostadas, dos
tipos de salsa y un caldito consomé
de camarones y otros mariscos. El
pequeño tazón de caldo no incluye
ningún marisco, pues tan solo es
líquido para abrir el apetito.
Ordené un ceviche de pescado
y un platillo muy típico en México
que lleva por nombre Aguachile.
El ceviche de pescado tiene un
sabor muy especial, pues es bañado
en limón y además lleva suficiente
pimienta, chile, tomate y cebolla
picados.
Pedí el Aguachile Rojo, que
lleva limón, chile de árbol, lima,
chile, tomate, cebolla y cilantro
bien picados. Aunque este platillo
se ve chico, si se acompaña con
tostadas puede dejar a una persona
muy satisfecha.
Otro especial de la casa son las
ricas tostadas de mariscos y las
quesadillas de marlín ahumado en
tortilla de maíz.
Cabe mencionar que el pescado
no es muy bueno para el precio
en que se vende ($10 por platillo
de ceviche). La textura fue algo
chiclosa, sin embargo el camarón
si es de buena calidad.
Además de sus ricos platillos,
210 Ceviche cuenta con deliciosas
bebidas preparadas. Desde sus ricas
margaritas, hasta sus clamatos con
cerveza y otras ricas bebidas con
curazao son muy solicitadas en el
restaurante.
Recomiendo este lugar para visitarse
en fin de semana, durante las
noches o para una cita con amigos.
En estas temporadas de calor tan
intenso, el restaurante es perfecto
para darse una escapada a la hora
de comida del trabajo.

First Lady announces “Healthy
Lunchtime Challenge” winners

kids across <strong>the</strong> country put <strong>the</strong>ir
aprons on <strong>and</strong> gave <strong>the</strong> First Lady’s
“Healthy Lunchtime Challenge”
<strong>the</strong>ir best shots. More than
1,300 entries featuring wholesome,
tasty ingredients, including
salmon, black beans <strong>and</strong> ground
turkey were submitted. And on
July 9, 54 junior chefs will be
celebrated at a White House Kids’
“State Dinner” for <strong>the</strong>ir delicious
creations.
Texas will be represented by
Devanshi Udeshi, 12, from Sugar
L<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> “Slam Dunk Veggie
Burger.”
Earlier this week, First Lady
Michelle Obama, Epicurious,
<strong>the</strong> Department of Education <strong>and</strong>
<strong>the</strong> Department of Agriculture
announced <strong>the</strong> winners of <strong>the</strong>
nationwide recipe challenge to
promote healthy lunches. The
campaign was part of <strong>the</strong> Let’s
Move! Initiative.
The winners, representing all
50 states, three territories <strong>and</strong>
<strong>the</strong> District of Columbia, will be
hosted by at <strong>the</strong> special luncheon
by Mrs. Obama <strong>and</strong> entertained
with a performance by singer Rachel
Crow. The kids will also get
to visit <strong>the</strong> White House kitchen
garden.
“Our Kids’ State Dinner is one
of my favorite events of <strong>the</strong> year,
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> kid chefs who come from
around <strong>the</strong> country never cease
to impress <strong>and</strong> inspire me with
<strong>the</strong>ir creativity <strong>and</strong> ingenuity.
I’m counting down <strong>the</strong> days until
<strong>the</strong> winners join me at <strong>the</strong> White
House to celebrate <strong>the</strong>se healthy
<strong>and</strong> delicious meals that kids

plate or recipe.

Forget lions, <strong>and</strong> tigers, <strong>and</strong>
bears when <strong>the</strong>re are carnivorous
plants around. Until December
1, 2013 <strong>the</strong> San Antonio Botanical
Garden is hosting SAV-
AGE GARDENS: The Real <strong>and</strong>
Imaginary World of Carnivorous
Plants exhibit. The Botanical
Garden offers a beautiful experience
for families.
“We work hard to be a family
destination, <strong>and</strong> having a large
family exhibit once a year is part
of that package. Last year we
had dinos <strong>and</strong> next year we’re
having a Legos exhibit,” Bob
Brackman, executive director
of <strong>the</strong> Garden explained that
Savage Gardens is a part of that
experience.

a poco la confianza del cineasta
mexicano Guillermo del Toro, hasta
el punto de que ambos se han colado
en su última cinta, “Pacific Rim”, y,
en cierto sentido, se han convertido
en sus “actores fetiches”.
“Ron y Santiago son un poco
mis actores fetiches a estas alturas”,
reconoció el director durante una
entrevista con Efe en Miami para
presentar su próxima película, que
se estrena el 12 de julio.
En “Pacific Rim”, el cineasta de
48 años, afincado en Los Ángeles,
ha querido contar de nuevo con la
participación de Segura, con el que
tiene amistad desde hace tiempo.
“Lo adoro”, resumía.
No es la primera vez que el
creador de “Torrente” cruza el A-
tlántico para flirtear con la poderosa
industria de Hollywood: en 2011,
Adam S<strong>and</strong>ler quiso que Segura
hiciera un cameo en “Jack <strong>and</strong> Jill”
(“Jack y su gemela”) y en 2002 el
propio Del Toro ya contó con él para
“Blade II”.
“En cada película trato de matarlo.
Lo mato en ‘Blade II’ y lo mato
en esta”, con la diferencia de que en
esta ocasión “lo mato de una forma
brutal”, explicaba entre risas el
cineasta, al que le “interesa mucho
que Santiago muera de una forma
horrible”.
El director, galardonado con
un Goya y dos Ariel, no descarta
que Segura pueda adentrarse en
Hollywood con una adaptación
de “Torrente”, una de las películas
más taquilleras de la historia del
cine español.
Al respecto, el creador de “El
laberinto del fauno” (ganadora de
tres Óscar y nominada a otros tres)
confirmó a Efe que “Torrente”
ha despertado el interés de varios
productores estadounidenses, que
quieren hacer una adaptación del
curioso expolicía, seguidor del
Atlético de Madrid y de “El Fary”.

activate <strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong> Venus
Flytrap. Though, <strong>the</strong> live carnivorous
plants should absolutely
be <strong>the</strong> most intriguing.
“The live plants are probably
<strong>the</strong> coolest because you can actually
see <strong>the</strong>m in action. You can
see <strong>the</strong> Venus Flytrap digesting
a fly <strong>and</strong> how insects have gotten
trapped in <strong>the</strong> Pitcher Plant,”

“Hace tres meses estaba comiendo
con Oliver Stone y me dijo que
estuvo a punto de hacer ‘Torrente’
con Sacha Baron Cohen y Santiago.
Así que esos rumores que había eran
reales”, afirmó.
También le une una gran amistad
a su otro actor “fetiche”, Ron Perlman,
con el que ha trabajado en
“Cronos” (1993), “Blade II” (2002)
y en las dos entregas de “Hellboy”
(2004, 2008).
“Perlman es uno de mis mejores
amigos, un actor que admiraba desde
muy pequeño. Fue una suerte contar
con él en mi primera película”, explicó
Del Toro, satisfecho de volver
a tenerle, junto a Charlie Hunnam,
Idris Elba y Rinko Kikuchi, en el
reparto de “Pacific Rim”, una cinta
cargada de efectos especiales pero
también de “muchísimos elementos
reales, mucho más de lo normal”.
Según explicó, para rodar esta
producción de Legendary Pictures
se construyeron unos escenarios
“muy gr<strong>and</strong>es, muy elaborados y
muy difíciles” de realizar para poder
recrear el ambiente más auténtico
posible.
“Usamos miniaturas físicas,
que ya casi nadie usa, y utilizamos
efectos digitales dirigidos de una
manera muy particular”, dijo Del
Toro sobre cómo dotaron de realismo
a los monstruos de la cinta,
unas “criaturas muy irreales pero
dirigidas visualmente para que

included with <strong>the</strong> Garden’s admission
of $8 for adults, $5 for
children age 3 to 13, <strong>and</strong> $6 for
students, military, <strong>and</strong> seniors
65 <strong>and</strong> over. During <strong>the</strong> duration
of <strong>the</strong> exhibit San Antonio
Public Library cardholders can
receive $1 off admission with <strong>the</strong>
presentation of <strong>the</strong>ir library card.

hacemos cine debemos recordar que
no existen, como tal, los efectos de
ordenador, sino que los hacemos
nosotros. Los hace el director, el
animador, la gente que ilumina el
efecto...”.
“Las diriges tú, las hace el animador
dirigido por ti, y lo importante es
no perder eso de vista. La artesanía y
el trabajo de uno debe estar en esos
efectos”, insiste el director, quien
asegura que nunca tuvo intención de
dirigir la nueva versión de Godzilla:
“Es falso, son sólo rumores”.
El argumento de “Pacific Rim”
pivota en torno a “la historia de
unas criaturas que surgen del mar,
de 25 pisos de altura”, que ponen
en peligro la supervivencia de los
humanos en la Tierra.
Para combatirlos, los protagonistas
de este largometraje llevarán a cabo
“la creación de unos robots que son
controlados por dos pilotos (humanos)
y están unidos por un puente
neurálgico entre ellos que les funde
las memorias y las personalidades”.

auto y de momento un compañero
de trabajo te pide que le hagas
el favor de llevarlo a su casa. Y
tú, con la mejor intención, le
dices: “Por supuesto, súbete”.
Comienzan a hablar de la
vida y de repente te indica que
te pares en el carril de emergencia.
Piensas que se siente mal,
así que te estacionas. Pero te
quedas perplejo y sin palabras
cu<strong>and</strong>o te exige: “Cambia esa
estación de radio, estoy mareado
con tantas rancheras. Además,
vas a paso de tortuga y me van
cerrar la tintorería. No te dije,

pero voy a recoger mi ropa de
camino a la casa. Bájate que
quiero manejar”.
¿Qué harías en una situación
como esta? Seguramente, le
dirías: “¿Cómo? ¡Estás loco!
Este es mi auto y aquí m<strong>and</strong>o
yo”. Sin duda, no permitirías
que nadie controlara tu auto y
mucho menos te dijera lo que
tienes que hacer.
Sin embargo, por absurdo que
parezca, en otras circunstancias
le entregas el control de tu vida
a otras personas, dej<strong>and</strong>o que te
manejen como una marioneta.
¿Cuántas veces has hecho algo
en contra de tu voluntad con
tal de complacer a alguien para
evitar que se enoje?
Conozco mujeres que se han
alejado de sus amistades porque
su pareja no simpatizaba con
ellos. Otras que no continuaron
una carrera porque su marido les
dijo: “¿Cómo le vas a dedicar
tiempo a tus hijos si te pasas
metida en la oficina?”. También
sé de hombres que no pueden ni
tan siquiera ir a tomarse una cerveza
con los amigos porque sus
esposas los tienen dominados.
Y tú, ¿te sientes en control de
tu vida? Si no lo estás es porque
has cedido tu poder a otro. Pero
tú puedes tomar el control nuevamente.
Todo lo que tienes
que hacer es enfrentar el miedo
a ser criticado o ab<strong>and</strong>onado.
Recuerda que no estás haciendo
nada ilegal, injusto o absurdo.
Aquel que se enoje o te deje
porque haces lo que disfrutas,
es un egoísta que solo vela por
su bienestar. Quien te ama se
deleitará en complacerte y jamás
querrá controlarte.
Además, ¿sabías que las personas
que se sienten en control
de sus vidas, no solo son más
felices y optimistas... ¡sino hasta
más saludables¡? Realmente
no hay mejor sensación en el
mundo que hacer lo que a uno
le gusta y le da placer.
Aquellos que mantienen el
timón de sus vidas —como el
buen chofer que no suelta el
volante— siempre encuentran
el camino adecuado y llegan a
donde quieren ir.

muy íntimos de su vida. Entre
estos su primer embarazo y su
intento de suicidio cu<strong>and</strong>o era
adolescente.
Cuenta sobre su tortuoso primer
matrimonio con su primer
esposo, Trino, quien ejerció
sobre ella violencia física y psicológica,
pero aun así regresó
varias veces en las cuales quedó
embarazada de sus tres hijos:
Chiquis, Jacquelin y Michael.
Asimismo, sobre la tremenda
pobreza en que vivió en la cual
no tenía dinero ni para comprar
agua.
Asimismo, es estremecedor
el relato sobre la violación de
la cual fue víctima al salir de
una discoteca, y desgarrador
el momento de saber que su
esposo Trino había violado a su
propia hija.

Covo’s take on “Revelation Road 2”:
While <strong>the</strong> first installment of
“Revelation Road” was quite
good – an eclectic mix of sci-fi,
Mad Max <strong>and</strong> good versus evil,
<strong>the</strong> ending could leave some
viewers dissatisfied. Luckily,
impatient as I am, I was able to
watch <strong>the</strong>m one after ano<strong>the</strong>r, so
I didn’t have to suffer <strong>the</strong> cliffhanger
blues. And I would give
Part One three stars for entertainment
value.
But something goes awry on
<strong>the</strong> way to <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> second
film, which was disappointing.
The casting <strong>and</strong> acting in both
part one <strong>and</strong> two was more than
acceptable, but it’s in part two
that movie-making <strong>and</strong> propag<strong>and</strong>a
get mashed up. The result
completely muddles <strong>the</strong> effectiveness
of <strong>the</strong> film.
(Spoiler alert) In “Revelation
Road 1,” already available on
Netflix, traveling salesman Josh
McManus (David A.R. White)
stops at a rural convenience store
on a long <strong>and</strong> eerily empty road.
Almost immediately <strong>the</strong> store
is robbed by a local biker gang
(Brian “The Boz” Bosworth, pro
wrestler Steve “Sting” Borden).
Josh stops <strong>the</strong> robbery but makes
enemies with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> biker
gang, who are now out to get him.
Trust me, <strong>the</strong> whole thing plays
out much better than it sounds.
As he tries to make his way
home to his wife <strong>and</strong> baby, catastrophic
events start happening.
War with Iran is imminent or
may even be happening, people
start disappearing <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> weird
lightning is affecting <strong>the</strong> power
grid. Kind of looks <strong>and</strong> feels
like <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> world is nigh.
Ratings:
A few of <strong>the</strong> characters start to
preach <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> stage is set for a
titanic duel as <strong>the</strong> world hurtles
towards <strong>the</strong> biblical time of
prophesy, <strong>the</strong> Rapture.
It’s in “Revelation Road Part
2” that <strong>the</strong> filmmakers absolutely
allow <strong>the</strong> message to become
<strong>the</strong> movie <strong>and</strong> stop telling <strong>the</strong>
story. All <strong>the</strong> character development
that came before <strong>and</strong>
all <strong>the</strong> back stories in this film
(which are pretty interesting)
come to an abrupt end, which is
a shame, because I was rooting
for <strong>the</strong> good guy. There could be
more to come from this two-part
film, but I don’t know where it
can go because <strong>the</strong> filmmakers
locked <strong>the</strong>mselves in – <strong>the</strong>y
left <strong>the</strong>mselves little room for
redemption.
At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> day, parts of
this film are entertaining, too –
but if you know what’s going to
happen, it loses its thriller edge.
If you saw part one, part two
will wrap it up for you. I’ve
written it before <strong>and</strong> I will write
it again. Movies should tell stories
-- this film seems intent to
deliver a message instead, <strong>and</strong>
loses much of its cinematic <strong>and</strong>
entertainment value. The actors
played <strong>the</strong>ir parts well <strong>and</strong> for
this reason it earns two stars.
This film also features Oscarnominated
actor Eric Roberts
(“The Dark Knight,” “The Expendables”),
Days of Our Lives
star Jen Lilley (NBC Days of
Our Lives) <strong>and</strong> Tracy Melchior
(CBS’ The Bold <strong>and</strong> The Beautiful).
It is rated PG-13 thanks to
some violence <strong>and</strong> runs about an
hour an half.

Joaquin Cosio shares his “Lone Ranger” adventure
screen by 2001. Since <strong>the</strong>n, he’s
been in more than 30 feature films
<strong>and</strong> countless shorts, including
roles in <strong>the</strong> last installment of <strong>the</strong>
James Bond franchise, “Quantum
of Solace” <strong>and</strong> Oliver Stone’s gritty
thriller, Savages.
Most recently, Cosio can be
seen as Jesus, a dastardly villain in
this summer’s latest blockbuster,
“The Lone Ranger” working with
Johnny Depp <strong>and</strong> Armie Hammer.
When asked if he preferred <strong>the</strong>
stage to <strong>the</strong> screen, Cosio explained
<strong>the</strong>y were too different to compare
– <strong>and</strong> he enjoyed each for different
reasons.
“Working in cinema is very
challenging, so much depends on
<strong>the</strong> camera – <strong>and</strong> working on <strong>the</strong>
stage can be very intense <strong>and</strong> it is
far more personal,” he explained.

easy-going, said working on “The
Lone Ranger” with such a wonderful
cast was tremendous -- he was
thrilled to be part of <strong>the</strong> film. He
enjoyed <strong>the</strong> entire experience, from
<strong>the</strong> pre-filming boot camp, where
<strong>the</strong>y learned to shoot guns <strong>and</strong> ride
horses – to filming on <strong>the</strong> set.

prepare for <strong>the</strong> film which lasted

Cosio said everyone who worked
on <strong>the</strong> film was terrific, especially
Johnny Depp.
“He is so nice <strong>and</strong> very friendly,
he was one of <strong>the</strong> first actors who
greeted me <strong>the</strong> first time I was on
<strong>the</strong> set,” Cosio said. “He spoke to
me in Spanish, he knows Spanish
<strong>and</strong> he spoke very well to me – eh,

He was as impressed with Depp’s
talent as he was his demeanor.
“And he [Depp] is a great actor –
“The Lone Ranger” is not easy, it’s
very very complex – ano<strong>the</strong>r thing

of this movie are not easy, truly
very complex – <strong>the</strong>re are no simple
characters …Tonto, <strong>the</strong> character,
is ano<strong>the</strong>r great creation of Johnny
Depp – He is a great actor, he works
outside from inside he works a lot
with his body <strong>and</strong> with his voice
He has an extraordinary voice –
it’s not <strong>the</strong> same voice has his last
movie – it’s ano<strong>the</strong>r kind of voice
– <strong>and</strong> in this [film], Tonto [<strong>and</strong> his
voice] are very, very mysterious,”
he explained.

He credits director Gore Verbinski
for his approach with each
actor.
“Verbinski’s direction is so
crucial – he worked with every
actor to uncover <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>the</strong>
complexities in each character – he
takes care of each actor <strong>and</strong> hones
<strong>the</strong>ir performances,” Cosio said.

“The Lone Ranger” opened
nationwide July 2. The movie is
rated PG13 <strong>and</strong> runs 2 hours <strong>and</strong>
29 minutes.

Film Festival will open with
<strong>the</strong> world premiere of <strong>the</strong> latest
from Mexican director Alfonso
Cuaron, “Gravity,” a movie set
in outer space featuring S<strong>and</strong>ra
Bullock <strong>and</strong> George Clooney,
organizers said Wednesday.
The 3D film will be screened
out of competition on <strong>the</strong> first
day of <strong>the</strong> Aug. 28-Sept. 7
event.
Bullock plays a medical
engineer on her first space
shuttle mission, while Clooney
portrays a veteran astronaut on
<strong>the</strong> verge of retiring.
The pair end up alone outside
<strong>the</strong> shuttle after disaster
strikes during a scheduled
spacewalk.
Cuaron’s ties to <strong>the</strong> Venice
Film Festival go back to 2001,
when his “Y tu mama tambien”
garnered <strong>the</strong> Golden Osella for
Best Screenplay <strong>and</strong> stars Gael
García Bernal <strong>and</strong> Diego Luna
received <strong>the</strong> Marcello Mastroianni
Award.
The Mexican’s 2006 film,
“Children Of Men,” won <strong>the</strong>
Best Cinematography Golden
Osella at Venice.
