busy visiting schools. Over these
past several months they have
visited 72 campuses. They saved
the best for last. On Thursday
morning, they went to St. Anthony
Catholic School. Their final
visit came with a very special

Larry Benson made a very heartfelt
speech addressing the students,

and promise to never stop getting
educated and getting better.

la lista de los destinos más importantes

a universidad.
Con más de 150,000 estudiantes
registrados en varias universidades
y colegios, ahora se
celebrará a San Antonio como
una ciudad de colegios y un lugar
ideal para ingresar a la universidad.
Esto se llevará a cabo en un
evento gratuito llamado “Destination
College”, que se llevará a
cabo del 27 de abril al 4 de mayo
en distintos lugares de la ciudad.
El evento “Destination College”
será el tercero en su clase,
próximos años de estudio.
Asimismo, una de las metas del
evento es crear conciencia entre
los estudiantes para que formen
parte de uno de los propósitos
de SA2020, que es incrementar
en un 50 por ciento el ingreso de
estudiantes a la universidad.
De acuerdo a los datos revelados
por el American Community
Survey, aproximadamente un
23.1 por ciento de los adultos
mayores de 25 años en San Antonio,
obtuvieron un diploma técnico
(2 años) o una licenciatura (4
años) en el 2011, lo que significa
que hubo un incremento de un
2.1 por ciento del 2010 al 2011.

starts Monday

Starting Monday, April 29,
registered voters in the City of
San Antonio will be able to start
casting their votes in person for
Mayor and their respective City
Council representatives in the City
Council General Election. Early
voting ends Tuesday, May 7 and
those who don’t make it to an early
voting site or just prefer to wait
until Election Day will be able to
vote on Saturday, May 11.
There are 35 early voting sites
including one at the Bexar County
Elections Office, but the hours the
polls will be open vary. Monday,
April 29 through Friday, May 3,
polls will be open from 8 a.m. until
6 p.m.; on Saturday, May 4, from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m.; polls will be closed
on Sunday, May 5; and open on
Monday and Tuesday, May 6 and
May 7, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Comentarios...
Cuando nadie está seguro

Después de una tragedia,
los sicólogos recomiendan que
hablemos con nuestros hijos y les
digamos que están seguros. Que
eso que ocurrió no les va a pasar
a ellos y que nosotros los vamos
a proteger.
El problema con ese mensaje es
que no es cierto. Estoy seguro de
que los padres de Martin Richard,
el niño de 8 años que, junto con
otras dos personas, murió cuando
dos terroristas denotaron sendas
bombas cerca de la meta final
del Maratón de Boston, le habían
dicho que no debía tener miedo
cuando ocurrieran tragedias como
la matanza en la escuela primaria
de Newtown, Connecticut; que
aquello que había visto u oído en
televisión nunca le iba a suceder
a él.
La tarde del lunes 15 de abril,
Martin, su hermana Jane, de 7
años, su madre y su padre fueron a
mirar el maratón. Alrededor de las
2:30 p.m., la familia fue a comprar
helados. Cuando regresaron a la
línea de meta, unos 20 minutos
después, en medio de la multitud
detonó un rudimentario explosivo
hecho en una olla de presión.
El caos se desató y la familia
trató de alejarse de esa zona.
Después explotó la segunda bomba,
que fue la que mató a Martin.
Su hermana y su madre resultaron
gravemente heridas.
Poco después de que se había
identificado a las víctimas, circuló
una fotografía de Martin en
Internet. En sus manos aparece un
cartel: “No lastimemos más a la
gente. Paz”. Lo hizo en su escuela,
con el dibujo de dos corazones rojos,
después de no sé qué tragedia.
Pero esa foto se ha convertido en el
doloroso símbolo de la masacre de
Boston. Es imposible no filosofar
un poco. Cuando ocurren cosas
así nos sentimos muy vulnerables
porque, la verdad, la familia
Richard pudo haber sido la familia
Ramos o la tuya.
Los actos de terrorismo tienen,
precisamente, esa característica:
afectar a civiles que no tienen nada
que ver con una causa política.
No se me ocurre nada que los
padres de Martin podrían haber
hecho para salvar su vida. Nada.
Pero apenas dos días después de
que ocurrieron los bombazos en
Boston, el Senado de Estados
Unidos tuvo la oportunidad de
salvar la vida de miles de niños y
adolescentes, y decidió no hacerlo.
Cuarenta y seis senadores
rechazaron una propuesta de ley
que habría obligado a revisar los
antecedentes penales de todas las
personas que compran un arma.
Eso evitó que se consiguieran
los 60 votos necesarios para una
nueva ley.
La propuesta de prohibir rifles
similares a los usados en las guerras
de Irak y Afganistán nunca
tuvo apoyo. Tampoco la de reducir
la cantidad de balas que se usan
en los cargadores. Lo que esto
significa es que nada ha cambiado
en Estados Unidos desde que en
diciembre fueron asesinados 20
niños y seis educadores en una
escuela de Newtown.
Hoy sigue siendo tan fácil y
legal el conseguir el mismo tipo
de armas como las que causaron
esa matanza.
Parte del problema, es cierto,
es la enorme influencia que ejerce
la Asociación Nacional del Rifle.
Pocos políticos se atreven a ir en
su contra. Eso significaría enfrentarse
a campañas multimillonarias
en la próxima elección. Pero el
fondo del problema es mucho más
complicado. Los estadounidenses,
sencillamente, no están dispuestos
a sacrificar sus armas por una vida
más segura.
La segunda enmienda de la constitución
– que permite la compra y
el uso de armas – es parte del ADN
de la sociedad norteamericana y
ninguna tragedia parece ser capaz
de cambiar esa tradición de siglos.
Después de la masacre en Newtown

o limitada con leyes más
estrictas – muchos políticos aseguraban

cambiado, que había (por fin)

The Lottery and drug testing for welfare
On Tuesday, a strange confluence
of events led the Legislature
to almost kill the Texas Lottery
Commission. The House
debated HB 2197, the Lottery
Commission sunset bill, which
provided for reforms to the
Lottery Commission, based on
recommendations of the Sunset
Review panel. To provide a little
background, the Texas Lottery
was approved by Texas voters
by a two-to-one margin on
November 5, 1991 and the first
ticket sold in 1993.
When the time came to vote
on the bill, a diverse contingent
of representatives opposed it,
even though the bill is needed
to prevent the Lottery Commission
from expiring. The
reasons given for the opposition
were varied, ranging from the
argument that the Lottery is a
regressive tax that targets the
poor, protests against the Lottery
Commission being poorly

run, or the belief that the Lottery
is immoral. No one anticipated
that the bill would actually fail,
so when the House realized what
happened, several members took
initiative to advance a motion to
reconsider the bill.
The second time around, the
bill passed on second reading
by a 92-53 margin, guaranteeing
the maintenance of the $2
billion in Lottery revenue that
goes to public education. The
bill passed Wednesday on third
reading 88-54. There have been
discussions about potentially allowing
voters to decide whether
to reauthorize the lottery in the
next session and a joint legislative
committee was authorized
to study the idea.
Also this week, the Senate
passed SB 11, a bill requiring
drug testing for welfare recipients.
This bill is similar to HB
1244, which we joint authored.
Both SB 11 and HB 1244 prohibit
individuals from receiving
welfare through the Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF) program for a certain
period of time if that individual
tests positive for a controlled
substance. TANF serves more
than 100,000 Texans at a cost
of approximately $90 million
annually.
Both of these bills allow an
individual to begin receiving
benefits if he or she tests negative
for a controlled substance
and completes a substance abuse
treatment program. SB 11 is
somewhat more restrictive, requiring
drug testing of individuals
applying for welfare on
behalf of a child as well as for
those applying on their own
behalf.
SB 11 would still allow the
applicants’ children to receive
benefits through a designated
third party. The author of the bill
made it clear that this bill should

Legislative session has been
infrastructure. Local community
leaders have spoken up, warning
that if we delay investing in
the crucial building blocks of
our state, the robust economy
that Texas currently enjoys will
collapse.
However, we also live in a
state where most of lawmakers
are fiscally conservative, and
allocating tax dollars is often
difficult, at best. Too often,
rather than dealing with these
needs, the can has been kicked
down the road.
Not this session. Lawmakers
have listened, and last week,
the Texas Senate unanimously
decided to stop the delays and
take action by unanimously
approving Senate Joint Resolution
1 (SJR 1). This resolution
— which still needs approval
from two-thirds of the House
of Representatives, and then
final approval from the voters in
November — proposes to transfer
$5.7 billion from the state’s
Economic Stabilization Fund
(you probably know it as the
“Rainy Day Fund”) to finance
these crucial needs.
I’m not only thankful to my
colleagues for taking action,
I’m also grateful that they had
an open mind toward what
constitutes “infrastructure.” As
originally written by Senator
Tommy Williams, the money
would have helped finance
only much-needed water and
transportation projects. But
after much negotiation, another
piece was added: public education.
Most people use the word
infrastructure only in reference
to physical constructs such as
roadways and reservoirs, but
we must remember: Education
is the infrastructure of opportunity.
Like almost any negotiated
piece of legislation crafted
from compromise, not everyone
is completely happy with
SJR 1. In its current form, SJR
1 proposes to put $2.9 billion
toward transportation, $2 billion
to water, and $800,000 into
public education. I would have
preferred to invest even more
into education, but amendments
to do so did not pass, meaning
that the Legislature still has not
fully reversed the devastating
$5.4 billion in education cuts
made in the previous session.
Nonetheless, SJR 1 is a step in
the right direction, which is why
I joined all my colleagues in
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
supporting it. I hope the House
will do the same, followed by
voters in November.
On a more personal note: I’ve
come a long way since I was a
little girl on San Antonio’s West
side, being scolded for speaking
Spanish in school. Texas
has come a long way, too. Back
then, Mexican-Americans could
barely get a foot in the door to
our state’s halls of power, and
the same was true for women.
But on Saturday, May 4, I will
be sworn in as the Governor of
Texas!
No, I’m not replacing Governor
Perry. I will be Governor
just for the day.
At the beginning of the session,
my colleagues honored
me by electing me President Pro
Tempore of the Senate. A lot of
the President Pro Tem’s duties
are ceremonial, but it does carry
some weight: In the event that
the Governor and Lieutenant
Governor are both absent from
the state, the President Pro Tem
assumes the duties of Governor.
This has already happened more
than once this session.
Traditionally, a day is set
aside to actually swear the
President Pro Tem in to the
Governor’s office, with a host

que nunca he logrado entender es
lo poco dispuestos que están los
norteamericanos a controlar las
armas que los están matando. El
razonamiento es incomprensible:
sí, estas armas nos están matando
pero no vamos a hacer nada al respecto.
Punto. Por eso, aquí, nadie
está seguro.

nos quedarán grabados para
siempre. Pero son las armas que
el Senado no quiso sacar de la
calle las que terminarán matando
a mucha más gente.

keeping a close eye on SB 11 in
the coming weeks.

Yo siempre le digo a todo el
que es capaz de escucharme que
la paz financiera no llega por
cuánto ganas sino por cómo se
administra.
Muchos piensan si solo ganara
un poquito más todo estuviera
bien. La gente que han dicho eso
en el pasado es muy probable que
hoy en día estén ganando más
pero continúan sobreviviendo
de cheque a cheque. Uno de los
ladrones de la paz financiera son
los gastos hormiga.
Las hormigas pueden juntar
una montaña de comida que
pue de alimentar todo una colonia
de miles de hormigas durante
meses.
Las hormigas juntan ese monto
de comida de migajas en migajas.
De la misma manera, en vez
de juntar una montaña de dinero
para la jubilación, los gastos
hormiga acaban con la paz financiera.
Si tiene la costumbre de comprarse
un taquito y un café todas
las mañanas, o tal vez un refresco
a media mañana de la maquina
o se le hace fácil comprar un
bote de agua cada vez que echa
gasolina; esas migajas podrían
estancar el proceso para salir de
las deudas y robarle el dinero
que puede estar ahorrando para
la educación de sus hijos.
No me malinterprete, no se
trata de ponerle límites, sino de
hacerle concientizar lo que verdaderamente
está pasando.
La clave es volverse una persona
intencional con el dinero.

a su billetera y ese agujero que
hicieron en su bolsillo le está
costando más de lo que se da

Everyone is aware of cigarettes
and the harm they pose to
users and nonusers alike. Many
people have begun using water
pipe smoking (hookah) as a safer
alternative. Hookah has a very
old history and dates back to four
centuries back. Apparently it was
invented by a physician some time
between the 15th and 16th centuries
that claimed a less harmful
method of tobacco use.
However, cigarettes may be the
lesser evil of the two. In a research
study held by World Health Organization
(WHO), water pipe smoking
poses a serious potential health
hazard and is not a safe alternative
to cigarette smoking.
According to data published in a
journal for the American Association
for Cancer Research, smoking
hookah resulted in a different pattern
of exposure to toxic substances
that may lead to cardiovascular
diseases and leukemia. Hookah
delivers approximately 100 times
the smoke as a single cigarette,
with 40 times the tar and 10 times
the carbon monoxide, yet one in
every three college students do it.
“Water-pipe smoking at ‘hookah
bars’ has become popular with
young people in the United States,
and some believe that it is less
harmful than cigarette smoking,”
said Peyton Jacob III, Ph.D. and
San Francisco research chemist at

toxic exposures from water-pipe
and cigarette smoking differed in
pattern, with higher exposure to
some toxicants like carbon monoxide
and benzene in water-pipe
smokers.”
Benzene is a flammable organic
compound used to make other

plastics, resins, and nylon and
synthetic fibers. Benzene is also
used to make some types of lubricants,
rubbers, dyes, detergents,
drugs, and pesticides. It can cause
leukemia in humans. One in three

“cross-over” study. The volunteers
smoked cigarettes one day,
and water pipes on different days.
On average, volunteers smoked
three water-pipe sessions or 11
cigarettes per day.
Researchers found that waterpipe
smoking resulted in about
half the amount of total nicotine
measured in the blood during a
24-hour period compared with
cigarette smoking. On the other
hand, researchers found that while
smoking a water pipe, the total
amount of carbon monoxide in
the breath measured was more
than 2.5 times higher than while
smoking cigarettes.
Jacob explained that high carbon
monoxide exposure increases
the risk for acute events such as a
heart attack, stroke or sudden death
in people who have cardiovascular
or lung diseases.
“People want to know if it is a
lesser health risk if they switch
from cigarettes to smoking a
water pipe on a daily basis,” said
Jacob. “We found that water-pipe
smoking is not a safe alternative to
cigarette smoking, nor is it likely
to be an effective harm reduction
strategy.”
Hookah is a popular thing among college students. While many

Calidad de vida

Cuando uno comienza una relación
seria es muy probable que
tarde o temprano termine enamorándose.
Algunos comienzan enamorados,
otros se enamoran
después de un rato y otros nunca se
enamoran profundamente.
Recuerdo que cuando iba a
universidad, en mi clase de psicología,
leí que el enamoramiento
dura alrededor de 4 meses, y lo que
queda con el tiempo es el respeto,
los buenos tratos y los detalles.
No se me va a olvidar lo mucho
que me afectó haber leído eso,
pues el sueño eterno de toda mujer
es quedar enamorada para toda la
vida y que un príncipe azul sea
quien despierte todas las mañanas
a un lado.
Recuerdo también que mis propios
padres, quienes llevan 30 años
de casados y se conocen desde los
12 años de edad, me mencionaron
en varias ocasiones que el enamoramiento
dura solo un tiempo.

districts each with its own elected
representative, technically known
as single-member districts. And
this year, about 16,000 voters may
be surprised to find they are voting
in entirely different districts.
Every ten years, based on the
federal Census, City Council redraws
the district maps to balance
any population shifts.
Last June, city officials presented
public hearings to inform
citizens about the newly-drawn
proposed map. On Sept 20, City
Council members unanimously
approved the redrawn districts.
City Councilman Diego Bernal
(D-1) explained the new maps
moved City Council districts’ borders
to adjust for a surge of population
growth on the North Side.
“The guideline is one person,
one vote,” Bernal said.

No he logrado entender lo difícil
que puede ser entender a una mujer,
y me queda muy claro que cualquier
persona que esté leyendo esto
ha de estar diciendo: “¡Claro que es
difícil entender a una mujer!”.
Después de tantos problemas de
entendimiento he llegado a la conclusión
de que tanto a las mujeres
como a los hombres no hay que entenderlos,
sino, hay que quererlos.
Entendí que no podemos cambiar
a nuestra pareja, ni ellos nos podrán
cambiar a nosotros, pues entre más
confianza y conocimiento existe
entre ambos, mucho más detalles
encontraremos.
La mejor y única opción es tolerar,
ser paciente y ponerse en los
zapatos de los demás. Si tu relación
está más que hundida, recuerda que
tienes paciencia, y si logras ver
bonito el caminado de tu pareja, su
manera de comer y su manera de
vestir, todo en tu relación se puede
solucionar.

decade based on the U.S. Census
data. The 2010 Census numbers
showed San Antonio’s population
grew to 1,326,721, adding more
than 200,000 residents to the city’s
rolls.
“Every 10 years a political subdivision
is required to rebalance
– in the case of San Antonio, the
idea is to take the pie and cut into
10 equal slices with no more than a
10 percent variance for City Council
Districts,” Callanen explained.
For 2013, the city’s task was to
evenly divide the population into
the 10 districts, roughly 132,672
people each. Before the City
redrew the maps, the difference
between the smallest district (D-3)
and the largest district (D-8) was
about 60,000 people according to
the City Clerk’s office.
Besides divvying up the population
equally across all ten districts,
City Council also had to follow
certain rules and guidelines to
ensure voting rights under federal
law and maintain natural geography
and neighborhoods, as well as
whole voting precincts.
The new borders made Districts
8, 9 and 10 a little smaller
geographically while District 1
got a larger footprint that spreads
north outside Loop 410 and grew
to 126,616 people. This time
around, District 5 is the smallest
population-wise (126,228 people)
and District 9 is now the largest
with 139,227 people. The North
Side districts still have more
people, but now with less than a
10 percent variance.
Bernal’s District 1 now extends
from Edgewood to the Quarry and
a little past Loop 410 to the north
– so he will be covering a larger
swath of San Antonio.
“We’re confident we can do it
– it is more area to cover, but we
look forward to it,” he said.

Just a Thought: Intersecting with
Mayor Cisneros
In 1960 I was accepted to
attend Central Catholic High
School. I was excited having
graduated from St. Gregory’s in
Balcones Heights from eighth
grade and knowing I would get
to attend Central with some classmates
and meet new friends from
around the area, or so I thought.
Unfortunately my excitement
turned to sadness upon learning
two weeks before school
started that my father was being
transferred from San Antonio to
some strange place I never heard
of called Springfield, Massachusetts!
I was devastated by the move.
It took me 12 years to get back
to the Alamo City after Vietnam,
promising never to leave again
other than short term travel.
When I came back to San Antonio,
a few years later I eventually
met Councilman and soon to be
Mayor, Henry Cisneros. That is
when I realized had I attended
Central Catholic, he would have
been my classmate for four years
as he is my age. (Still is!)
After that our paths have
crossed many times and continue
to this day. When I ran for Judge,
he graciously endorsed me. I see
him at various functions, along
with his wife, Mary Alice.
The irony is I met his father
well before I met him. In fact,
I served in the Army Reserve
with his father, Colonel George
Cisneros at the 90th ARCOM
on Harry Wurzbach Road for a
few years. Many a reserve duty I
stood at attention in front of Colonel
Cisneros. When I worked at
KENS-5 in 82 my first story was
an interview with the Mayor’s
father the Colonel for Father’s
Day. Later the Colonel and I
worked out at the gym together
on occasion after he retired.
When Councilman Cisneros
decided to run for Mayor and
become the Alamo City’s first
Hispanic Mayor, a number of
my government students from
Memorial High School and I
campaigned for him. We stuffed
envelopes, walked door to door
and actively participated in the
campaign when we could.
As President of the Junior
Chamber of Commerce from
1981-82 I recruited him as a dues
paying member. After he was
elected Mayor I nominated him
for the National Junior Chamber’s
Annual 10 Outstanding
Men of America Award which
was presented to him in Tulsa,
Oklahoma that year. I actually
sat in the Mayor’s chair in his

office at 2 a.m. writing his recommendation!
Other notables named that
year included Merle Osmond, a
member of the singing Osmond
family. Remember Donny and
Marie? Also Leroy Selman of
the NFL Tampa Bay Bucks, and
the first blind mountain climber
who climbed Mt. Everest were
also inducted.
During the 90s when Mayor
Cisneros was named by President
Bill Clinton as HUD Secretary,
on more than one occasion when
I flew to D.C. to pull my Army
Reserve tours at the Pentagon I
would end up on the same flight
as he on our way to D.C. I would
point out he flew first class and
I didn’t!
To this day I wonder if I had
not moved to that strange place
in Massachusetts if I would have
hung out with the former Mayor
back in the day or even another
possible classmate by the name
Sonny Melendrez? I guess I will
never know.
Anyway, as always, what I
write is “Just a Thought.”

Missions National Park boundary

This past Wednesday U.S.
Congressman Lloyd Doggett
(D-San Antonio) testified before
the House Committee on Natural
Resources about the importance
of expanding the boundary of the
San Antonio Missions National
Park.
The members of the Bexar
County Congressional Delegation,
led by U.S. Rep. Lloyd
Doggett introduced the San
Antonio Missions National Historic
Park Boundary Expansion
Act earlier this year. The act
would expand the boundary of
San Antonio Missions National
Historical Park by approximately
137 acres near Missions San
José, San Juan, and Espada. This
land includes a remnant of the
San Juan Dam, the headgate to
the San Juan Acequia, and the
San José Nature Trail to the San
Antonio River.
“The Spanish Missions in San
Antonio are a unique treasure for
Texans and for all of America,”
said Rep. Doggett during his
testimony. “The Missions National
Historic Park preserves

Texas congressman to improve
Federal Government Customer Service

Earlier this week, Congressmen
Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28)
and Michael McCaul (R-TX-10)
announced the introduction of the
Government Customer Service
Improvement Act of 2013. The
bipartisan legislation works to
improve customer service delivery
across federal agencies, and
a companion bill was introduced
by U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner
(D-VA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI).
Millions of Americans depend on
federal agencies for vital services,
and delays in processing those
requests often result in inconvenience,
frustration and financial
hardship. Passage of this legislation
will make the federal agency
customer service process both
more transparent and efficient
and will focus limited resources
on improving front-line customer
service functions.
“Millions of American families
encounter the federal government
on a daily basis. They deserve
first class customer service. When
trying to navigate the bureaucracy
and cut through the red tape, it is
the job of our federal agencies
to provide helpful answers in a
professional and timely manner.
This bill puts the taxpayer first,”
Legislature must help Child
Protective Services caseworkers
With children’s lives at stake,
the pressure imposed by heavy
workloads at Child Protective
Services (CPS) is pushing many
caseworkers out the door. The
Legislature must use the time
remaining in the 83rd session
to help this agency keep caring
people on the job.
Every day, child abuse investigators
have to deal with
disturbing and heart-wrenching
situations that most people never
encounter. Their decisions can
mean life or death for a child at
risk, and that’s not something to
put away in a desk drawer when
they go home at night.
Other caseworkers — in family-based
services, conservatorship
programs, foster and
adoption programs, child-care
licensing specialists and inspectors
— also make a difference
every day in the lives of Texas
children. It’s not a job they do
for the money, and in fact, it
takes a toll.
Just how challenging are these
jobs? Last year 34 percent of all
child abuse investigators in Texas
resigned, and the turnover rate
among other caseworkers was
26.1 percent.

“Citizens should expect federal
agencies to deliver customer services
at least as well as the private
sector does, but this often is not
the case,” Senator Warner said.
“Many of our military veterans
still wait too long for critical
medical services and benefits,
and I’ve heard from Virginians
waiting over 400 days for their
full retirement benefits from the
federal government. That simply
is not acceptable.”

According to the CPS Data
Book for fiscal 2012, only 45.1
percent of all caseworkers have
been on the job for three years
or more, while almost 30 percent
have been at the job for less than
a year. CPS workers are relatively
young, with an average age of 36,
and the entry-level salary is less
than $37,000 a year.
In February, the commissioner
of the Department of Family and
Protective Services, former San
Antonio Judge John Specia, told
a legislative hearing that child
abuse investigators are overwhelmed
and under paid, and he
asked for help.
“It’s real hard to run a railroad
with 37 percent turnover,” Specia
told the Dallas Morning News,
referring to the number of rookie
investigators who departed the
job last year. Although these
workers care about what they’re
doing, he said, you can’t pay them
enough to stay if “they’ve got
just a completely unreasonable
workload.”
The Legislature is trying to
respond to his plea. While the
final budget for 2014-15 is still
being worked out, Senate Bill 1
as it currently stands provides just

improve response times for citizen
requests and government
services. It holds the Chief Performance
Officer at each agency responsible
for improving customer
service and it would also establish
a specialized team to assist those
agencies which consistently fail to
meet customer service standards.
In addition, the Government
Customer Service Improvement
Act of 2013 sets specific service
improvement targets for the Office
of Personnel Management,
an agency which has experienced
chronic backlogs in processing
retirement benefits for federal
employees. As of March 2013,
OPM still has a backlog of more
than 36,000 claims.
over $2.5 billion in all funds for
CPS, an increase of more than 10
percent over the current budget.
This amount includes about $105
million for Prevention and Early
Intervention programs — a substantial
increase over the current
budget, but still not enough to really
get serious about prevention.
More money will help, but that
alone won’t relieve the stress
caused by heavy caseloads. We
can do more, and that’s why I
am sponsoring bills that would
limit the caseloads of investigators
and other CPS caseworkers,
and enhance training for CPS
supervisors. I’m also seeking to
create a task force to examine
hiring and management practices
at the agency.
Specia is working hard to stem
the flight of caseworkers from
CPS and create a workplace
environment that will encourage
good, caring people to stay on
the job. The Legislature must
continue to help him.

The limits of military intervention
April marked the month that
Iraq held its first election after U.S.
troops completed their withdrawal.
The importance of these governorate
elections, in which over 8,000
candidates competed for 447 provincial
council seats, is akin to that
of U.S. mid-term elections since
they serve as a political barometer
before the national parliamentary
elections, which are set for 2014.
As Iraqis look toward their future
while continuing to struggle with
the challenges of terrorist attacks (a
one-day spate of bombings before
the election killed 75 people and
wounded over 350) and sociopolitical
divisions, they also contemplate
their past and the U.S. occupation
that forever changed their country’s
trajectory.
The Iraq War’s human costs
were substantial. Estimates of Iraqi
deaths range from nearly 100,000
to 140,000, sectarian violence has
caused at least 1.3 million persons
to remain internally displaced as
of 2012, and around 2 million fled
the country, with relatively few
returning. These numbers dwarf
the losses borne by coalition forces,
which include nearly 5,000 deaths,
over 30,000 wounded US troops,
and about 100,000 diagnosed with
PTSD.
At the turn of the millennium,
few would have dared imagine
that this bleak fate would befall the
place where civilization began. Yet,
Iraq’s future undoubtedly changed
on March 2003. Sadly, despite the
best of intentions, the domestic factors
in a post-Saddam Iraq did not
favor internal security.
The need for sociopolitical stability
as a prerequisite for public security
seems to have been severely
underappreciated by the transitional
Coalition Provisional Authority.
The disbanding of the Iraqi Army
in May 2003 left the country without
a bastion of public security and
employment. That same month,
tens of thousands of Ba’athist Party
members were banned from government
jobs, much more than what
had been originally been envisioned
or thought wise. The consequences
that these ill-conceived decisions
were compounded by the need to
delay elections and the drafting
of a permanent constitution until
January 2005.
The Sunni population’s feelings
of political marginalization,
at least in comparison to its prior
prominence, caused a massive
Sunni boycott of the 2005 elections.
The presence of Shiite paramilitary
groups, Sunni militias, and foreign
fighters that included members of
Al Qaeda undermined the public’s
confidence in the interim government.
These armed individuals,
commonly referred to as “insurgents,”
effectively displaced the
state by attacking police stations
or other government institutions,
assassinating politicians, fighting
the coalition forces, and developing
their own bases of support within
society.

While the 2007 troop surge had
an obvious military component to it,
its long-term effectiveness depended
on key political developments.
The Sunni Awakening Movement
began in late 2005 and was a result
of growing disillusionment with
Al Qaeda, communities’ need for
self-defense, the U.S.’s willingness
to pay salaries to the tens of thousands
of awakening group fighters,
and Sunnis’ desires to increase
their participation in governmental
decision-making. In addition, the
leader of the powerful Shiite Mahdi
Army, Muqtada al-Sadr, continued
to incorporate his Sadr Movement
into the political mainstream, a
decision that seems to have paid off
since he remains a very influential
figure and his allied political parties
became part of Prime Minister al-
Maliki’s governing coalition after
the 2010 parliamentary elections.
Sociopolitical changes within Iraq
had to change in order for the troop
surge to reduce violence.
In sum, the Iraq War demonstrates
how an aggressive foreign
policy can succeed in effecting
changes within another country’s
government, but will inevitably be
constrained by complex domestic
forces. Internal factors will always
be a greater determinant of stability
and progress than foreign ones,
despite the presence of thousands of
foreign troops.
As Iraqis vote and look toward
their future, they will bear this in
mind.
A fresh start for District 3

Born in 1965, I grew up in District
3 and attended Adams Elementary,
Harlandale Middle and graduated
from Harlandale High School. In
the 11th grade I attained HICEP
employment as a machinist at Kelly
Air Force Base in Building 375. I
resigned in 1986 to earn a degree in
Architecture from UTSA.
While attending college I met
Judge Albert Pena, Jr. who mentored
me as a protégé in coalitionbuilding.
He taught me a rare
quality of service to the community.
Together we directed the Inner City
Advocates. In retrospect, I am honored
to have experienced the real
rewards of a man who never soldout
his community. With Judge
Pena there was always hope for
accountability in city government.
But District 3 has become a
place where the constituent is told
“what will be done” rather than
represented. Compounded by Rolando
Gutierrez and Jennifer Ramos
vacating their respective offices prematurely,
the District 3 council seat
has weakened such that, in 2012,
City Council unanimously positioned
the incumbent Leticia Ozuna
without voter consent, a process that
illustrates the consequences of our
collective lack of involvement in our
own political lives. In District 3 an
abysmal 8% voter turnout means
4.5% wins an election. Still, the
City takes from our wallets while we
complain to each other at the dinner
table about packs of stray dogs that
roam our streets and parks.
While our sidewalks lay as broken
remnants of once-strong inner
city suburbs, City Hall flaunts a million
dollar incentive for a downtown
grocery store to serve new urban
hipsters. While the Bob and Jeanne
Billa Learning and Leadership
Center, Pan American Library, and
Sussex Park deteriorate, a fledgling
foreign corporation receives
a ten-year tax abatement plus a
$7,000,000 commitment at Brooks
City Base.
City Hall has turned a blind eye to
smart growth, balanced city investment,
and the maintenance of our
basic services. It is demonstrated by
seniors walking on damaged roads
to avoid unsafe and inaccessible
sidewalks that our infrastructure is
stressed to the limit. In order to fix
the most obvious problems we must
recognize the simple truth: our tax
dollars are not being spent on our
priorities. It is the right time to start
over in District 3.
That is why I have embarked
on a “Fresh Start for District 3”
campaign. It is important now
more than ever that voters elect a
candidate who’s running with no
strings attached and whose history
illustrates a proven commitment to
the community. We need a track
record of service. I offer that track
record. And my plan is simple.
First, we will unify District 3
across all party lines. National
politics has divided our community.
While many differ on national issues,
collectively most disapproved
of the recent 8.4% SAWS rate hike.
To move District 3 forward we all
must stand together and vote at the
polls in April and May.
Second, we will stand by our
senior community and create an
environment that enables our elders
by investing in senior housing opportunities
and by building accessible
pedestrian routes to Southside
services and amenities. We will
foster neighborhoods that value the
full range of life.
Thirdly, we will pursue a realistic
fare-share of our tax dollars. Bond
investment at Hemisfair Park began
in the tens of millions of dollars
along with millions allocated to
Hardberger Park, the Witte, and the
North US 281/1604 interchange.
We will begin the “Decade of the
Southside” and bring District 3 up
to par with the rest of San Antonio.
Fourth, we will create a neighborhood
commercial revitalization plan
focused on our strong commercial
corridors. Our plan will include a
holistic Southside vision of Military
Drive that transforms our central
lifeline into a world class boulevard
with enhancements to the W.W.
White/Military Drive junction while
reaching out to District 4 to join us
in our vision.
There is no magic wand. One
thing Judge Pena taught me is: the
only promise is hard work ahead. I
am willing to represent us if you’ve
had enough of the past and seek
a fresh start. After all, what good
is free Wi-Fi in the park if you’re
bitten by a dog while accessing the
internet?
Experience, For A Change
It’s time that we put experience in City Hall. Our community has
real issues and needs real solutions. Soy De Aqui. I’m a Lanier
graduate, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, a small
business owner and I have a passion for the Westside. This election is
about the future of our families. Let’s Revive District 5 together!

Pre-enrollment registration for Pre-K 4 SA

Parents and guardians interested
in enrolling their children
in the inaugural class of the City
of San Antonio’s Pre-K 4 SA
program are invited to attend a
series of pre-enrollment events
beginning Wednesday, May 1,
through Thursday, May 9, at ten
convenient locations throughout
the city.
Pre-K 4 SA will provide highquality,
full-day prekindergarten
education for up to 700 4-yearold
children at two Pre K 4 SA
Education Centers in the first
year of operation. Over the next
eight years, it is estimated that
more than 22,000 4-year-olds will
benefit from the program at four
centers and through scholarships
to be used in their home school
districts or in private schools with
a high-quality curriculum.
“San Antonio has set a bold
national example by making a
citywide investment in the future
of our young people,” Mayor
Julián Castro said. “We expect
interest to skyrocket as parents
learn more about how this highquality
program can help put their
children on a path to academic
success.”
Enrollment is free for 4-yearolds
and for those who will be age
4 by Sept. 1, 2013 if they or their
families meet at least one of the
state eligibility criteria:
• Eligible for free or reduced
lunch (is at 185 percent of the
federal poverty level)
• English as a Second Language
• Child of activity duty member
of the U.S. Armed Forces
• A child’s parent/guardian who
was injured, missing in action or
killed while serving on active
duty of the U.S. Armed forces.
• A child who is temporarily
without a home (defined by 42
U.S.C. section 11431)

At the pre-enrollment fair, parents

to enter a lottery for Pre-K 4 SA.

“Enrollment for Pre-K 4 SA is
not just for children who come
from economically-disadvantaged
families,” Mendoza said.
“Our goal is that all 4-year-old
children in San Antonio and
Bexar County who meet the criteria
be eligible to apply.”
Enrollment, she explained,
involves a four-step process:
Pre-enroll in May, lottery in
June, finalize enrollment in July
and notice of qualifying in July/
August. After parents have preenrolled
their child, 630 slots will
be chosen by lottery. Of those
children not selected, they will be
put on a waiting list. A separate
lottery will be held for 70 slots
for children whose parents will
pay through income-based fees.
In July, the 700 children chosen
for Pre-K 4 SA will complete
enrollment to qualify for classes
in August.

OLLU celebrates Westside
in “Best of the West”

¡VIVA FIESTA! ----Our Lady
of the Lake University (OLLU)
celebrated the art, food, music,
and culture of the Westside in its
second annual “Best of the West”
Fiesta event last Sunday.
“Best of the West” celebrates
the small businesses in the
Westside while raising funds to
provide scholarships to OLLU
students. This year, the festival
had something for everyone in
the family. Adults could enjoy a
cold beer and dance to some good
ol’ jazz by “Cat’s Don’t Sleep.”
Children had their own specialized
area where they could
get their face painted, listen to
a story, or pet wild animals!
“Wildtime Edutainment” had
wild animals on site to pet. A
porcupine, armadillo, and skunk
were among the creative creatures
to keep the kids amused.
Mr. and Ms. “Saint of the
West” were also gracing the
crowd in their crowns and sashes.

Memorial High School
1-Act Play going to state

For the first time in Edgewood
ISD history, one of its high
schools will compete at the State
level of the University Interscholastic
League One-Act Play.
Memorial High School is the
only 4A school in San Antonio
that advanced to State. Memorial
will compete Tuesday, May 21, at
the Bass Concert Hall on the University
of Texas at Austin campus.
“It is an honor to represent
Memorial and the Edgewood
community at such a high level,”
said Amanda Pyle, Theatre Arts
director at Memorial. “We are
thrilled to blaze a new path.”
Memorial’s show is called,
“Over the River and Through
the Woods,” by Joe DiPietro.
It is produced with special arrangement
from Dramatists Play
Service.
The show features two sets of
doting grandparents and their
grandson, Nick, getting together
every Sunday for dinner – for
food and advice. Nick has to
announce that after 29 years of
Sunday dinners, he has received
a promotion and is moving across
the country. Hilarity ensues when
his loving grandparents devise a
plan to keep him from moving.
Memorial has competed at four
levels – Zone, District, Area, and
Regionals – before reaching State.
At each level, only two schools
advance to the next round.
Auditions were held in January
and students have been rehearsing
ever since.
“The students have worked so
hard to put on a hilarious, emotional,
and engaging show,” Pyle
said. “Being chosen to represent
San Antonio at the 4A State meet
is validation for our program and
the high-quality theater we produce.
“We are eagerly anticipating
our performance at State and
we ask, in the true tradition of the
theater, that you do not “wish us
luck,” but tell us to “break a leg!”

Enough talk — the truth about Geno

As far as I can tell, two schools
of media thought have developed
on West Virginia quarterback Geno
Smith: Nonsensical, almost borderline
racist ramblings, and compensatory
gushing.
What if the truth is more mundane?
What if Smith is a good quarterback
with a chance of being a good
NFL quarterback, and he has been
elevated to another (perhaps unwinnable)
stratosphere in this NFL Draft
because there is nobody else.
Because this first round is decidedly
unsexy.
Because there is no Andrew Luck
or RG3.
Because teams always reach
for quarterbacks, always, always,
always do.
If Brandon Weeden is a first-round
pick, then I can be a first-round pick,
and certainly so can Geno Smith.
Smith has been projected by these
copycat mock drafts to go as high

College football teams have
always had unique ways of convincing
top-flight athletes that
their school is the place to be,
but this year, coaches seem to
have taken a turn for the weird
when it comes to bringing bluechip
recruits in.
Mississippi State has gotten
attention of late for its captivating
"YOU'RE A BALLER" and
"Can of Swag" recruiting letters,
while North Carolina State
has put its spin on approaching
as No. 3 to Oakland, which is a possibility
despite the Raiders trading for
Matt Flynn. This is, after all, Oakland
where the Ghost of Al Davis still may
overrule all logic on draft day. And
if Smith does not go there, Philly,
Cleveland, Buffalo and the NY Jets
all have been mentioned as possible
landing spots.
Not only would I not draft him,
I wouldn’t draft him with someone
else’s pick.
And not for the aforementioned
nonsensical, almost borderline racist
reasons argued by Pro Football
Weekly draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki
recently. He had a bit about
how Smith "does not command
respect from teammates and cannot
inspire," how he is "not committed
or focused," how he "cannot handle
hard coaching," how he is "not a
student of the game" or exactly what
coaches like Chip Kelly of the Eagles
have NOT described when talking
about Smith.
Almost every coach and personnel
guy has talked about being impressed
with how the kid from West Virginia
interviews, and with how he looks in
workouts. The motivation to lie is
always there with the draft; to gush
less so. None were within spitting
distance of Nawrocki’s takedown
comparison to, of course, mostly
failed black quarterbacks.
"A cross between Akili Smith and
Aaron Brooks," Nawrocki wrote,
"Smith is a gimmick, overhyped
product of the system lacking the
football savvy, work habits and
focus to cement a starting job and
could drain energy from a QB room.
Will be overdrafted and struggle
to produce against NFL defensive
complexities."
This sounds very much like being
guilty of QWB, quarterbacking while
black. This is annoying on so many
levels, starting with the very small,
minute detail of how we only compare
black athletes to black athletes
and white to white. There are also
the very subjective criticisms on immeasurables
like savvy, habits and
the always (and by always I mean
never) talked about energy-in-thequarterback-room
factor. All of these
have a tendency to be buzz words,
hiding a bigger bias and this hardly

creative with pitch

certainly countless other original
approaches that go undocumented
on the internet.
But perhaps no one has done
it better than Rutgers, which has
taken to 2014 three-star Sparta,
N.J., athlete Noah Brown — and
let him know with a pitch that
featured this, um, interesting image
of Scarlet Knights defensive
coordinator Dave Cohen’s face
superimposed upon a gleaming
bodybuilder holding a barbell.
Brown has removed the photo
since posting it to his Twitter
account on Wednesday, and on
Thursday he clarified his reasoning
for putting it online in the
first place.
“I found the mail very funny.
Not creepy in anyway . It was
creative and original. Y’all
need to relax,” Brown said via
Twitter.
But the photo and its message
will live on in infamy forever.
And at this point, Brown —
who has also attended camps at
Boston College and Temple and
has several offers from top-tier
programs all across the country
— probably owes it to Cohen
and the Scarlet Knights to heed
the letter’s advice, stay local and
join the cause.

regular season title

For the fourth straight season,
the St. Mary’s Baseball Rattlers
have a Heartland Conference
championship to their name
after defeating long-standing
rival Sr. Edward’s. St. Mary’s
took the victory and the title,
2-1, to win the season series
with Hilltoppers 4-2 to secure
its right to host the conference
tournament in May.
Two early runs in the first
inning were all that was needed
for the Rattlers as Matt Mc-
Clain (Sophomore, San Antonio)
stifled the Hilltoppers
(29-14, 9-11 in conference),
peppering four strikeouts in
eight innings of work. Mc-
Clain tossed 4 2/3 hitless and
scoreless innings against St.
Edward’s and allowed one
earned run to improve to 6-3
on the season.
“You know it feels good,”
said McClain, who moved into
the starting rotation this season.
“I really think our bats came
together all season and our
defense has been outstanding
also, so I give those guys credit
for all that hard work they do”.
The Rattlers gave McClain
support as they rallied for
seven hits. Brandon Bates (Sr.,
Boerne, Texas) led with two
hits while Billy Richard (Sr.,
Schertz, Texas) picked up his
24th RBI on the season. Kyle
Bumpas (Jr., El Paso, Texas)
led off the Rattler bats with a
double and would score off two
wild pitches.
Richard had two men on
and sliced one to second base
to gain a fielders choice that
brought in a run shortly thereafter.
The Hilltoppers were
quieted until the fifth, when
a triple followed by a double
brought in their sole run of
the game. McClain pitched the
sixth and seventh in a 3-up-3-
down fashion and snaked out of
the eight that saw a Hilltopper
on second and third with one
out after two great nabs from
Mario Maldonado (So., Laredo,
Texas) ended the inning.
With the conference title already
theirs, the Rattlers have
one league series unfinished
business left. St. Mary’s faces
Texas A&M International in
its final league series of the
regular season in hopes for a
series win to complete its season
with wins in all conference
series. In their last meeting, the
Dustdevils took the three-game
series 2-1.
“We’ll come out and play
our game,” said McClaing, who
was named last week’s conference
Pitcher of the Week.

Durante la temporada regular
y en sus dos últimos encuentros
celebrados en el AT&T Center,
el equipo de hockey profesional
San Antonio Rampage recibió
dos excelentes entradas gracias al
apoyo de su base de aficionados.
Tal suceso le valió para ubicarse
En el sexto lugar de equipos
que más aficionados atrajo a una
arena de la American Hockey
League (AHL).
Rampage es propiedad de la
empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment
(SS&E), que administra
el magnate Peter M. Holt
El viernes 19 de abril, en su
partido contra el visitante Ice-
Hogs de Rockford, más de 10
mil espectadores aplaudieron las
espectaculares acciones, a pesar
de que fueron doblegados con
marcador de 9 a 4 goles.
Al día siguiente (sábado 20) en
lo que fue su última aparición con
su público, Rampage ofreció el
festejo “Fan Appreciation Night”
(Noche del Aficionado), perdiendo
de nueva cuenta. Sus verdugos
fueron los Aeros de Houston, que
son sus rivales deportivos de la
autopista No.10.
Durante la tradicional festividad,
Rampage ofreció más de
$60,000 en premios.
De nueva cuenta, la afición los
apoyó con una entrada de 7,067
espectadores.
Así, sumaron en total, durante
la temporada, la asistencia de
268,560 fans que lograron ubicar
al club en el sexto lugar de equipos
con mayor asistencia en AHL.

En el partido de la Noche del
Aficionado (contra Houston Aeros),
gracias a los goles anotados
por Jared Gomes, central nativo
de Brampton (Ontario), y Colby
Robak, defensa, el Rampage
parecía que ya tenía la victoria en
las manos tras haber traspasado
la portería resguardada por Mike
Condon, quien en el segundo y
tercer periodo fue apoyado por
sus compañeros que se dieron a la
tarea de contra atacar al guardameta
local Dov Grumet-Morris, a
quien victimaron con cinco goles
anotados por el alero izquierdo
Brett Bulmer que puso el marcador
2-1/.
El alero derecho Dan DaSilva
hizo el 2-3. Culminando la
hazaña, el alero derecho Justin
Fountine se coronó fabricando el
cuarto y quinto gol de la noche.
Con su victoria, Aeros puso

clasificándose sexto en la tabla
general de la Conferencia del
Oeste, escaño que le da derecho

Rampage concluyó en el 14º

de los Bulldogs de Hamilton
que finalizaron en último lugar

en la AHL, y como aliado del club
Florida Panthers, al que proveyó
de talento con patinadores prospectos

Entre ellos fueron llamados
recientemente el arquero Markstrom
y el defensor Colby Robak
de 22 años de edad y nativo
de Dauphin (Manitoba), quien
recibió su tercera invitación por
parte del vicepresidente y gerente
general Dale Tallon.
Robak participó en 63 partidos
con Rampage dejando marca de
23 puntos, con 5 goles anotados
y 18 asistencias.
Anteriormente, Robak había
jugado 15 partidos con Panthers,
encuentros en los que dejó ver su
habilidad sobre la pista de hielo,
tanto en la ofensiva y defensiva.
De última hora la gerencia del
Rampage, a cargo del gerente
general Michael Santos, hizo
pública la contratación por un año
del arquero Dov Grumet-Morris,
quien estará jugando su tercera
temporada con el club local en la
temporada 2013-14.
Cabe anotar que el timonel Weber
no se durmió en sus laureles.
Durante su buena racha ganadora
del mes de marzo logró acumular
su victoria número cien dirigiendo

Silver Stars se refuerzan y Sophia Young fuera de acción

Dan Hughes, entrenador en jefe
y gerente general del club de baloncesto
femenil profesional, San
Antonio Silver Stars, asociado a
la Women’s National Basketball
Association (WNBA), después
de estampar su firma en su nuevo
contrato, se dedicó a estudiar las
habilidades de diferentes jugadoras
que aparecían en el escaparate del
2013 WNBA Draft.
La finalidad de encontrar nuevo
talento entre jugadoras del baloncesto
universitario se realizó con
la meta de encontrar a la suplente
de la delantera Sophia Young,
quien lamentablemente sufrió un
rompimiento de ligamento en su
rodilla derecha jugando en la serie
del playoff con el equipo Beijing
en la Women’s Chinese Basketball
Association (WCBA). Esta lesión
prácticamente la tendrá fuera de
acción en la temporada 2013.
Para Young, la temporada 2013
WNBA hubiera sido su octava
jugando para Silver Stars.
Sophia Young, que en la temporada
pasada hizo el 1-2 con la estelar
guardia Becky Hammon (con
quien compartió crédito guiando
a Silver Stars a la conquista de 12
partidos consecutivos) se verá en
la necesidad de no jugar durante la
temporada 2013.
“Cuando me enteré de la lesión
de Sophia Young fue un gran
lamento al no contar con sus servicios
en la temporada que está por
comenzar. Tendremos que echar
mano del nuevo talento recién

seguirán observando el desempeño
de las jugadoras prospecto:
Danielle Robinson, Jayne Appel,
Daniela Adams y Shenise Johnson,
así como de las recién adquiridas
la delantera Delisha Milton-Jones,
ex jugadora del equipo Sparks de
Los Ángeles quien es una jugadora
veterana con 14 años de experiencia
en la WNBA.
Por su parte, la afición también
lamenta la ausencia de Young.

Sophia Young no va a poder jugar,

Las elegidas
El sorteo del 2013 WNBA Draft
dio el derecho a Silver Stars de
elegir a cuatro basquetbolistas
colegiales.
La primera elección fue Kayla
Alexander, quien es central, egresada
de la Syracuse University.
Alexander de 6-4 pies de estatura
finalizó su carrera universitaria
como la encestadora líder de todos
los tiempos del plantel en mención
dejando marca de 2,024 puntos
encestados, con 350 balones bloqueados.
La segunda elección fue la guardia
Davellyn Whyte, con estatura
de 5-11, egresada de la University
of Arizona, vistiendo el uniforme
del equipo Wildcats, con el que dejó
marca personal como la segunda
jugadora con más puntos anotados,
en promedio de 16.3 unidades encestadas
por partido.
La delantera Diandra Tchatchouang,
nativa de Courneuve
(Francia) fue la tercera elegida por
sus méritos cuando jugó para la
University of Maryland en la temporada
del 2010, y en el baloncesto
profesional de la French League
con el club Perpignan Basket, con
el cual tuvo promedio de juego de
9.1 puntos anotados y 4.7 posesiones
en rebotes por partido.
En su cuarta elección Silver Stars
adquirió a la guardia Whitney Hand
quien, con historial colegial de 95
partidos jugados para “Sooners” de la
University of Oklahoma, estableció
marca personal de 11.7 puntos, con
5.2 rebotes por encuentro.
En su carrera colegial Hand
sufrió un par de lesiones (rotura
de ligamentos) que la obligaron al
retiro del baloncesto universitario.
“Estoy bastante agradecida con
la organización de Silver Stars por
considerar darme la oportunidad de
jugar profesional. Tengo entendió
que San Antonio es una gran organización
deportiva, con su administración
y jugadoras de gran calibre.
Por lo que tengo una oportunidad
que aprovecharé a lo máximo,
trabajaré duro para ganarme el
derecho de contribuir con el equipo.
Esperando que todo nos salga bien
en el futuro”, enfatizó Hand.
Silver Stars pronto abrirán su
campo de entrenamiento.
Su primer partido de la temporada
2013 WNBA lo jugarán
en casa (AT&T Center), y está
programado para el viernes 24
de mayo contra Fever de Indiana,
actual monarca de la WNBA.

Noticia de Disponibilidad – Borrador de la Declaración de Impactos Ambientales: El Departamento
de Transporte de Texas (conocido como TxDOT por su sigla en inglés) está avisando
al público de la disponibilidad del Borrador de la Declaración de Impactos Ambientales
aprobado para la construcción propuesta en la carretera US 281, del Loop 1604 a Borgfeld
Drive en el Condado de Bexar, Texas. El proyecto propuesto se está desarrollando con la
Autoridad Regional de Movilidad Alamo (conocida como el Alamo RMA por su sigla en inglés)
y la Administración Federal del Carreteras (conocida como FHWA por su sigla en inglés.)

El Proyecto del Corredor de la Carretera US 281 la extendiera aproximadamente 8 millas,
agregaría carriles de tráfico adicionales, e incluirá cuatro rampas de conexión directa que
constan de la mitad al norte del intercambio de la carretera US 281 con Loop 1604. Las
alternativas para construcción tienen tres opciones para financiamiento: sin-tarifa, tarifa, y
carriles administrados. Se propone acceso controlado del Loop 1604 hasta Borgfeld Drive.
Los impactos sociales, económicos y ambientales del proyecto propuesto han sido analizados
en el Borrador de la Declaración de Impactos Ambientales.
La necesidad de mejoras a la carretera US 281 resulta de tendencias históricas y actuales
de crecimiento en la población y en el empleo por el corredor del proyecto de la carretera
US 281 y dentro de la zona a su alrededor. Este crecimiento genera cantidades crecientes
de vehículos, que a la vez impiden la función de la carretera US 281 para proveer movilidad
regional y acceso local, que resulta en retrasos de viajes y una taza alta de choques de
vehículos. El propósito del Proyecto del Corredor de la Carretera US 281 es de mejorar la
movilidad y acceso, realzar la seguridad, y mejorar la calidad de vida de la comunidad.
Un total de dos alternativas para construcción, además de la Alternativa de No-Construcción,
se presentan en el Borrador de la Declaración de Impactos Ambientales.

In our day, unlike in the days of
generations past, we have much
too simplistic a view of what it
means to believe something. In
the world today, many people use
the word "believe" to describe
their feelings about something or
describe a fleeting wish or hopeful
desire. But as we consider the
word belief, or faith, in its fullest
biblical sense, we see that the
word implies God's gracious act
of giving and our humble act of
receiving and resting on Christ
alone, which involves our entire
being: the heart, the mind, and
the will.
Although we use the word belief
in conjunction with all areas
of human experience, usually
when we use the word it is in the
context of religious belief. The
word "religious," however, and
all its derivatives, has fallen on
hard times recently due largely
to its longtime inappropriate use
among those who understood
neither the true Christian religion
nor the genuine relationship with
Christ by faith alone on which all
Christian doctrine is established.
Thus, preferring to emphasize
their personal relationship with
Christ over and against the religion
that comes as a necessary
and appropriate consequence of
that relationship, many Christians,
with the best intentions, have
relegated their faith to one area of
life rather than allowing their faith
to overflow into every area of life,
which is the essential nature of
faith itself--to encompass all of life
by acknowledging, affirming, and
applying the Christian doctrine we
believe, confess, and proclaim.
In the New Testament, James
(1:22-25) repudiates the "worthless"
religion of those who are
merely "hearers" of the Word
without being actual "doers" of
the Word, writing,
If anyone thinks he is religious
and does not bridle his tongue but
deceives his heart, this person's
religion is worthless. Religion that
is pure and undefiled before God,
the Father, is this: to visit orphans
and widows in their affliction, and
to keep oneself unstained from the
world (James 1:26-27).
James' point is simple--if our

understand why some speak of
religion in a pejorative way, we
must be careful to use words in
their appropriate contexts in accordance
with their historical definitions.
Even Charles Spurgeon
often used the word religion in an
appropriate way to describe the allencompassing
Christian faith and
life. In a sermon on Deuteronomy
32:47, "For it is not a vain thing
for you, because it is your life...
(KJV)," Spurgeon criticized the
merely outward, ceremonially superstitious
religions of men (as did
the apostle Paul in Acts 17), but
then went on to employ the word
religion positively when he said,
But with all these allowances,
we still this morning assert most
positively that the religion of
Christ Jesus, that which has been
revealed to us of the Holy Ghost
by the apostles and prophets, and
specially by the Messiah himself,
when truly received into the heart,
is no vain thing.(3)
In the best and most appropriate
sense of the word, religion
is a helpful word we can use to
describe our faith, which encompasses
every aspect of our Christian
lives, rooted in and flowing
out of our spiritually regenerated
new hearts and minds and established
on the relationship that God
has established with us.
In the fourth century, Augustine
advocated using the Latin word religion
by highlighting its etymology
re-ligare, which means, "to join
together" or "to bind together" as
in a covenant bond between man
and God.(4) The word religion,
rightly understood, joins together
everything we believe as we live
it out in all of life. Furthermore, if
we consider the lexical definitions
of the word religion, we observe
that religion describes not only a
person's system of belief but also
what a person practices, observes,
and devotes himself to. As Herman
Bavinck writes: "Religion must
not just be something in one's life,
but everything. Jesus demands that
we love God with all our heart, all
our soul, and all our strength."
When the sixteenth-century
pastor John Calvin wrote an allencompassing
systematic theology
of the Christian faith, he titled his
work, in Latin: Institutio Christianae
Religionis, which can be
translated, Institutes of Christian
Religion, or, Institutes of Christian
Piety. For Calvin, a man's doctrine
is the foundation of his entire religion,
and a man's religion is not
isolated to one segment of his life
but has implications for all of life.
We cannot restrict our doctrine as
many attempt to do. Rather, our
doctrine will, by its very nature,
branch out into every sphere of
Christian piety and practice. In
other words, a man's doctrine is a
man's life.
What we believe inescapably
influences what we think, what
we do, and even our motives of
why and how we think it and do it.
Those Christians who try to isolate
their doctrine to their intellects
so that it doesn't interfere with
their daily lives are attempting
the impossible. Either they do not
possess true faith in Christ alone,
or they will find that their doctrine
refuses to be confined and instead
begins to spread into all of life--
from their hearts, to their souls,
to their minds, and with all their
strength. Mark Dever points out
that if our religion is genuine, it
will naturally affect everything,
including our care for others as
well: "If our religion is real, if our
faith is saving, it not only affects
our actions, but affects our actions
towards others... Real religion cannot
remain simply a 'vertical thing'
between me and God. It must affect
the way I deal with others."
Christian doctrine, by its very
nature, is an all-encompassing
religion established on the entire
system of doctrine, piety, and
practice set forth in Scripture itself.
(7) It is crucial that we grasp this if
we are to understand the nature of
creeds, our use of creeds, and the
church's need for creeds. If we fail
to see the all-encompassing nature
of Christian doctrine, we certainly
will not see the all-encompassing
nature of creeds, which exist
not only to affirm, confess, and
proclaim the elementary matters
of our faith, but to set forth the
entirety of the doctrine, piety, and
practice of the Christian religion.

NAVY Day en la Plaza de El Álamo

El Almirante William Roberts
presidió el NAVY Day en la Plaza
de El Álamo, evento que es parte del
extenso programa de festividades de
Fiesta San Antonio 2013.
Todos los eventos tienen por
objeto un acercamiento con la comunidad
mostrando los recursos de US
NAVY en su misión de guardar la
estabilidad del país. Para ello se distribuyó
profusamente publicidad impresa
como medio de información al
público sobre las actividades de esta
fuerza militar y las oportunidades
que ofrece el enlistamiento.
Entre otros representantes militares
que asistieron al Navy Day
figuró el Almirante Antonio Cruz
(Rear Admiral).
Emotivos momentos dentro del
programa ocurrieron cuando el
Almirante Roberts tomó la protesta
de un grupo de oficiales que
se re enlistaron para otro período de
servicio; y cuando nuevos cadetes
tomaron el juramento para servir
al país a través del NAVY jurando
acatar las órdenes del Presidente de
los Estados Unidos.
El martes 23 de abril el Almirante William M. Roberts
presidió la ceremonia NAVY Day en la Plaza de El
Álamo, dentro del programa Fiesta San Antonio 2013.

WARM UP con motivo de la serie de playoff en la Conferencia del Oeste en la que está participando
San Antonio Spurs contra Los Angeles Lakers. Por tal motivo fue felicitada por fans y ejecutivos
de Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “Soy fan de por vida de los Spurs, queremos que ganen otro
campeonato para que la fiesta siga en San Antonio”, comentó la carismática fan de los Spurs, equipo
que se encuentran en la ruta para la conquista de su quinto título en la NBA. La fiesta en honor de
la afición se realiza con dos horas de anticipación a los partidos de playoff. La celebración seguirá
llevándose a cabo en el patio del AT&T Center (Bud Light Courtyard). (Fotos Franco)
Dr. Dámaso A. Oliva Jr., tercero de izquierda, con sus invitados Dr. Richard A. Rodríguez y Joe Gallegos,
celebraron el éxito de la 40ª temporada de los Spurs. Se unió a la celebración Sean Elliott, ex delantero
que fue parte del equipo que en 1999 conquistó el primer título para San Antonio. Elliott es

alegremente con la base de seguidores de los Spurs. Cureau los invitó a seguirle echando porras a los Spurs antes y durante el
primer partido del playoff contra Los Angeles Lakers. La tercera fiesta WARM UP está programada para el próximo martes, en
caso de que se juegue el quinto partido de la serie a ganar 4 de 7 partidos.
Paco es el nombre de este osito de peluche adquirido por Tino
Durán, Publisher de La Prensa, en una subasta en la empresa Los
Verdes Interior Gardens. Edna Posey, propietaria de Los Verdes,

El domingo pasado finalmente se
me hizo ir a La Tequilera del Patrón,
un restaurante mexicano que por lo
visto está alcanzando la fama en
San Antonio. Este restaurante es
de los mismos dueños que Costa
Pacífica, que también se encuentra
por la misma zona de la ciudad, y ha
resultado ser bastante exitoso.
La Tequilera, que se ubica en el
17776 Blanco Rd., es un restaurante
que cuenta exclusivamente con platillos
y bebidas muy mexicanos,
incluyendo los aproximadamente
100 tipos de tequila con que se cuenta.
La intención de los dueños fue nada
más y nada menos que demostrarle a
la gente de San Antonio lo auténtica
que puede ser la cocina, la cultura y
la arquitectura mexicana.
Al entrar al restaurante, nos recibió
una guapa chica de unos 20
años de edad. Nos asignó nuestra
mesa en la terraza y nos mandó
de inmediato a nuestro mesero, un
joven muy simpático y atento.
Por supuesto que hacía tanto
calor que lo primero que ordené fue
una cerveza bien fría acompañada
de medio limón. Nos trajeron las
bebidas y además unas tostaditas
acompañadas de una pequeña olla
de barro que contenía queso panela
bañado en salsa roja sin picor.
Mientras comía los totopos, le di
una hojeada al menú y me decidí
por tres platillos. Ordené un queso
fundido (queso flameado), tripitas y
tacos de bistec.
Para mi mala suerte, no tenían
tripitas en ese momento, por lo que
solo pedí el queso fundido y los
tacos de bistec.
Cuando me llegaron los platillos,
acompañados también de una orden
de tortillas de maíz recién hechas,
comencé por hacerme un taco de
queso fundido. El queso estaba delicioso,
por lo que decidí combinar
mis tacos de bistec con el queso,
y hacerme tacos estilo quesadilla
con carne.
La carne estaba en su punto, con
muy buen sabor, jugosa y muy tiernita.
De las mejores que he probado
en restaurantes del mismo estilo en
San Antonio.
Ordené también una salsa picosa
verde, la cual le dio muy buen sabor
a mis tacos.
Las tortillas son hechas en el
restaurante y se puede sentir que se
hacen en el momento, pues además
de tener excelente sabor son perfectamente
delgadas y de tamaño

Otro de los platillos que recomiendo
en La Tequilera es el de
tacos de fideo seco cocinado con
chorizo, cebolla, tomate, y acompañados
de crema y queso panela.
El chicharrón de Rib Eye y el
chicharrón de pollo son algunos de
los platillos favoritos en el restaurante,
y son perfectos para botanear
o hasta para ordenarlo como platillo
para una persona.
Además de carnes y platillos
de pollo preparados, La Tequilera
ofrece ricas sopas mexicanas, ensaladas,
ceviche y ricos postres con
un toque muy mexicano.
Este restaurante también cuenta
con un “lunch menú”, en donde
se puede ordenar desde caldo de
puchero, sopa azteca o de papa, enchiladas
rojas, cochinita pibil, pollo
en mole, sopes, ensalada y tostadas,
entre otros.
La hora feliz del restaurante es de
lunes a viernes de 4 p.m. a 7 p.m., y
los martes hasta las 11 p.m.
Para los amantes de la cocina
mexicana, les recomiendo que
visiten este delicioso restaurante en
donde encontrarán un poco de lo
que es la extensa cocina mexicana.

Nick Mery might be from
another planet. Well, his music
is at least. When you listen
to his latest full-length album
“Gentlemen Streets” you’ll
know why.
The album is a mix of what
the average fan might call “normal”
tracks and others would be
labeled as more on the “artistic”
side.
Mery’s album isn’t something
you can listen to just
once—for a couple reasons—
because there’s a lot going on
and you’ve likely never heard
anything quite like it.
At first pass, I wasn’t completely
sold because “Gentlemen
Streets” is not your typical
album.
It sounds like Outkast made
love to N.E.R.D. and had a
baby, then that baby had a baby
with Robin Thicke and “Gentlemen
Streets” was born.
Even Mery had his doubts.
“When I was writing it I
was telling myself that it was
terrible. If you were to look at
emails from the later part of
last year when I was wrapping
up the writing of it—all emails
being sent out to my friends at
5 a.m. said, ‘I haven’t slept in
days I’m the worst musician on
Earth.’”
“There are more of those then
I’m proud to admit,” Mery said.
“Then it went on again when
Edwin (Stevens, co-producer
on the album) and I were recording
and mixing it. We had
these emails back-and-forth that
said, ‘Dude, we should just quit
music and get real jobs as car
washers because that’s all that
we will ever be good at.’”
All the negativity aside, Mery
never quit and this past Friday,
his 28 birthday, “Gentlemen
Streets” was released on iTunes.
The album has a twofold
purpose for sounding the way it
does (neither of which include
making money)Mery said. The
first reason was to try to do
something different in San Antonio
and the second was the
their adventures via social media
on new tablets they’ll be getting
as part of the prize. In fact, each
grand prize is valued at $6,000
and includes two tablets to make
tweeting, pinning or Facebooking
the best parts of the journey a
piece of cake.

list of the world’s most beautiful
women, published on its Web
site, while another American
actress, Kerry Washington, took
second place.
The 40-year-old Paltrow, winner
of a best-actress Oscar for
her role in the 1998 film “Shakespeare
in Love,” took the title
away from singer Beyonce, who
headed last year’s rankings.
“I honestly thought someone

“What interests me now is to
try to continuously do something
that’s not being done in
San Antonio,” Mery explained.
“I’m trying to create an image
or a sound not necessarily
pigeon-holed by one genre of
music but more so by experimentation,
creativity and a
willingness to try new things
that haven’t been done before.”
In his first full-length album
“The Raccoon” released under
the name Merykid was about
dressing up in ceremonial ritualistic
costumes and pushing
the concept of a guy dressed up
as an animal telling a bedtime
story about a guy who leaves
Earth in a rocket ship.
Three years later Mery has
abandoned his costumes, returned
from space and wrote
something in the same vein
from a technical standpoint.
Each of the songs on “Gentlemen
Streets” is an intricate
weave of beats, synths and vocals.
It’s definitely something
you won’t hear any other artist
in San Antonio record and
something should be said for
Mery’s risk taking as an artist.
“Maybe it is me acknowledging
I am growing up a bit,”
Mery said about the album.
“But, this is me and I don’t
think I would have done it any
other way.”

Pugh’s take on “Good Night”:
I once heard it said that the
secret to life is that it ends.
In the film “Good Night”
which screened recently at
SXSW, Leigh Rockwall (Adriene
Mishler) and her husband,
Winston (Jonny Mars) host a dinner
party for their closest friends
on her 29th birthday to celebrate
her life … and to break the news
Provocative and unpredictable,
this film will leave you
stunned and considering the
ramifications of a deep moral
dilemma.
New York-based writer/director
Ramin Bahrani, born and
raised in North Carolina, will
no doubt be recognized for his
abilities as a storyteller and
filmmaker based on the power
of this film, which will leave
audiences reeling from decisions
made by the protagonists
of this timely tale.
Set in the heartland on an
Iowa farm (it was actually
filmed on a working farm in
Illinois) the cinematography is
absolutely striking. What starts
out as a story about commercial
farming strangling traditional
smaller farms (Dennis Quaid
plays Henry Whipple, the commercial
farmer’s farmer who
also sells genetically modified
seeds with the motto “Expand
or Die”) crescendos smoothly
into an even stronger story about
fathers and sons and a crisis of
morality.
Amazing performances by
Dennis Quaid as the father,
Henry Whipple, and Zac Efron
as the race-car driving son,
Dean Whipple, only add to this
commanding screenplay that
will stay with you for days after
viewing this film.
What’s more, Bahrani’s intention
is not to send any messages
– this is no parable. The writer/
director simply poses a plausible
scenario and allows the audience
to contemplate and consider the
twist, which naturally leads to
pondering ‘what would I do’ in
the same impossible situation.
Special kudos to the actors
here – Quaid does not play the
typical American hero we are so
used to seeing him as – and he
her leukemia is back.
A huge ensemble cast made
me worry the film would be
overwhelmed with indistinguishable
characters, but Austin-based
writer/director Sean Gallagher,
in his directorial debut, found
a way to guide each one to individual
paths of self-discovery
framed by how each would manage
to shoulder the impending
loss of their dear friend.
“Good Night” is a painfully
aware film about a tribe of people
too young to know death, who
are forced to pause on their ladders
of young adulthood. The
story is told mostly through a
series of vignettes in various
rooms of the house, the backyard
and a trip to the gas station.
The dialogue is clear and we
learn the histories of each character
without forced exposition
through stories, forgotten conversations
and lingering questions.
Slightly awkward individual
monologues are weaved,
but they serve to bring us closer
to the three main characters’ experiences
with terminal illness.
Add to the mix statements about
an imperfect healthcare system,
and you find a little flaw that
sometimes interrupts the flow
and continuity of the narrative,
which is otherwise thoroughly
engaging.
A strong screenplay and outstanding
performances over-
Ratings:
plays the anti-hero so well, this
could be one of his best performances
ever. Efron also breaks
out of the teen idol mold with
this role and gives an equally
impressive performance. Special
mention for Maika Monroe
who delivered a stellar performance
as well.
This is an extremely wellmade
film and serious drama
that deserves your attention.
There is no question in my
whelm any other flaws a viewer
might find distracting, so that
for the most part, this film works
and makes you care about what
happens to the characters.
“Good Night” turns out to be
a provocative film that forces us
to think about the difficulty of
living when living is difficult –
revealing the human condition at
its most basic level. Each character
struggles through and the
film lets us look in and see how
imperfect and sometimes selfish
everyone can be even when the
mind that Bahrani should be
considered one of America’s
top directors and filmmakers.
When I asked him what he was
most proud of with this film –
without missing a beat, he said,
“The actors.”
This is another knock-out
film from SXSW 2013. “At Any
Price” is a must-see that will be
released in San Antonio on April
26. The film is rated R and runs
for about 105 minutes.
only thing anyone really wants is
to belong to life and one another
for just a little while longer.
Genuinely intense and dramatic
performances make this film
worth your time, and it may well
be a film that stays with you for
days with its tough and enduring
questions. Walking away after
watching this film, one can’t help
but appreciate that the quality of
life is measured by the quality of
relationships, for the ensemble in
this well-crafted film as well as
the audience.

Guillermo del Toro developing TV
series based on a Japanese manga
(EFE)- Mexican filmmaker
Guillermo del Toro and HBO are
developing “Monster,” a series
based on the work of Japanese
“manga” (or comics) author Naoki
Urasawa, the specialized blog
Deadline reported Thursday.
Del Toro will be in charge
of writing the script along with
Steven Thompson, known for
his work on “Dr. Who” and
“Sherlock.”
Thompson will write the pilot
episode, which the Mexican
filmmaker intends to direct, the
publication said.
The story is a thriller about the
activities of a surgeon who, after
saving the life of a 12-year-old
boy, discovers that the youngster
has become a ruthless murderer
who poses a terrible threat, a
situation for which the doctor
blames himself and so he undertakes
a mission to find and
eliminate him.
Del Toro will serve as executive
producer for the project.
The Mexican in July will
screen a science fiction film -
“Pacific Rim” - and will use
Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone,
Benedict Cumberbatch and Charlie
Hunnam in “Crimson Peak,”
the new project he will begin
filming next February.

Querida Nina:
Soy una señora de 64 años
y tengo tres hijas a las que yo
mantuve toda mi vida porque
mi esposo falleció cuando la
más grande tenía apenas 7
años. Yo me casé joven y no
terminé la universidad en ese
momento, pero puse todo de
mi parte para estar con mis
hijas, trabajar y después de
diez años logré terminar mi
carrera en negocios. Ahora
mis hijas tienen 33, 31 y 29
y ya hicieron sus vidas, pero
nunca me dejaron hacer la
mía porque les daba miedo
que las fuera a dejar o que el
nuevo hombre fuera a reemplazar
a su padre. Cuando ya
estaban a punto de casarse
la más grande y la mediana
una persona quiso tener una
relación seria conmigo y mi
hija menor se enojó tanto que
decidí no hacerlo.
Ahora ya que ellas tienen a
sus familias y están casadas
me han pedido que comience
a buscar a algún hombre para
que no esté sola, y yo siento
que lo hacen porque se están
comenzando a preocupar por
mi manutención en el futuro.
Me da tristeza, coraje y enojo
porque nunca vieron por mi
felicidad, y ahora que ellas
están felices ya quieren que yo
sea también feliz. He llegado
a pensar que sus esposos son
quienes están involucrados y no
quieren hacerse responsables
si me llegara a pasar algo en
el futuro.
Creo que fue muy egoísta de
parte de ellas, pero al mismo
tiempo fui muy tonta yo por
haber permitido que me controlaran
de tal manera que nunca
pude conocer a nadie.
Ahora yo soy la que no quiere,
pues creo que ya estoy vieja y
nadie me va a querer así, pero
si lo hiciera, no me gustaría que
se enteraran ellas y no quisiera
ni saber poquito de ellas. Estoy
tan molesta que no les he
llamado en unas semanas, y he
estado evadiendo las reuniones
de los fines de semana, pero
sé que eso no puede ser para
siempre, así que necesito tu
ayuda, no sé cómo manejar la
situación y no sé cómo echar
fuera el coraje que tengo.
Querida señora molesta:
Tus hijas fueron muy desconsideradas
contigo durante toda
tu vida, pues tú hiciste mucho
por ellas y lo menos que te
merecías era sus órdenes. Por
otro lado, creo que tú también
fuiste muy desconsiderada
contigo misma, pues ellas son
tus hijas, y la que debió haber
puesto orden eras tú, porque
mientras ellas vivían bajo tu
techo, debieron haber vivido
bajo tus reglas; sin embargo, no
fue así, y ahora no hay nada que
se pueda hacer para retroceder
el tiempo.
Lo que sí puedes hacer es
darte tiempo para ti, y darte el
gusto de comenzar a hacer lo
que tú quieras. Recuerda que
nunca es tarde para comenzar,
así que date la oportunidad de
hacer lo que tú quieras y lo que
te haga feliz. Si quieres conocer
a algún hombre, hazlo porque
tú quieres, no porque tus hijas
te lo pidan.
Por otro lado te aconsejo que
hables con ellas y les digas
cómo te sientes y lo mucho que
te afectó el hecho de no haber
conocido a nadie durante todo
este tiempo. Si batallas para
hablar con ellas, háblales del
tema como si a ellas les estuviera
pasando, de modo que te
respondan qué es lo que ellas
harían en tu situación, si su
pareja falleciera ahora.
Es muy fácil juzgar y criticar
a los demás, sin embargo nadie
entenderá la situación por la
que uno pasa, si no se tiene
empatía con los demás.

Don Omar, Jenni Rivera
dominate Billboard Latin awards
(EFE)- The big winners at
the 2013 Billboard Latin Music
Awards were Puerto Rican
urban singer Don Omar and the
recently deceased Jenni Rivera.
Don Omar, who started out
as top favorite with 18 nominations
as the ceremony got
underway, ended up with 10
prizes, notably the awards for
Songs Artist of the Year, Male,
and Airplay Song of the Year.
He dedicated one of his prizes

bombing in Boston and their
families, and another award to
his raggaeton cohorts Wisin

fireworks display.
Jenni Rivera, who died last
December in a plane crash,
was awarded some of the most
important prizes of the evening,
such as Artist of the Year.
She was also given an emotional
posthumous tribute by
actor Edward James Olmos
and the singer’s brother, Juan
Rivera, who moved the audience
with a heartfelt rendering
of “No Llega el Olvido,” a
promise that she will “never be
forgotten.”
Thalia, Paulina Rubio, Gerardo
Ortiz and other stars
shared their memories of Rivera
during Thursday night’s gala
in Miami.
Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias
and Jennifer Lopez won
the prize for Tour of the Year
for their 18-city jaunt across
the United States and Canada,
in which Wisin & Yandel also
took part.
