HAPPY FATHERS DAY
JUNE 15 th
T
hink back to when the C5 Corvette
debuted in 1997 and the C6 Corvette
came out in 2005.
There was a lot of buzz about these two
generations of Corvettes and most people in the
club began making plans to sell their C3 or C4, or
for the more fortunate members with space and
resources, simply add to the stable.
Flash forward ahead to 2013 and the C7 Corvette
was introduced. While many CVC members are
excited to learn about the performance features,
creature comforts, fuel economy, upcoming
models and latest colors, there doesn’t seem to
be that “pent” up demand to run out and replace
your Corvette with a new one. This is in spite of
the fact the C7 is selling very strongly at about
35,000 units per year.
Could it be as we get older and many of us are
now retired, that we are watching our spending
habits more closely? Back in 1997 when the C5
came out the average age of CVC members was
around 50 years old. Right now, more people
own C5’s eighteen (18) than any other generation
in the entire club. What about 2005 when the C6
debuted? Most CVC members were still
employed as many of us approached our late
50’s. As a result, fourteen (14) garages house C6
Corvettes.
Today, with an average CVC member’s age at
68, to date only two members have purchased
C7 Corvettes. Yes the generation is only
entering its second year, but I have heard very
little talk of someone getting ready to order a
2015 or that they will buy a new one in the next
couple of years. This is despite the fact that the
Corvette continues to improve each year and
will now feature a 650hp Z06 convertible, the
special “Atlantic Design Convertible Package”
and the “Pacific Design Coupe Package.”
As if that is not enough to get you thinking
about it, two new colors are on the way with
Shark Gray Metallic and Daytona Sunrise
Orange Metallic. There is a new 8-speed paddle
shift automatic transmission, a 2.41 limited-slip
differential which will improve traction and
Chevrolet’s latest OnStar system.
The mindset of our two members that
purchased C7 Corvettes seems to have been,
“You can’t take it with you, life is short and it’s
all about having fun and treating yourself to
something special.” For many others the
mindset could be, “Seventy-Thousand is
something we can no longer afford.” Maybe it
is hard to justify an unnecessary expense during
the golden years, or perhaps people will wait
and buy one used and save tens of thousands of
dollars. Either way it is a car many of us would
enjoy owning and driving. It will be curious to
see in three or four years how many C7’s will be
owned by Central Valley Corvette Club
members.
General Meeting Minutes
June 17, 2014
President Craig Hansen called the General
Meeting to order at 6:33pm. The minutes from
the May general meeting were read by Kim
Fosnaugh. Joyce Kroeker made a motion to
accept the minutes as read which was
seconded by Scott Parkin.
In the absence of Membership Chairman,
Charlie Fosnaugh, Kim Fosnaugh had Chuck
Hall introduce his guests and prospective
members Holly & Lee Baumgarten. Treasurer
Fred Parks gave the Treasurer’s report. There
were no questions. Skip Severance, Vice
President of Public Relations reviewed the April
Birthdays and Anniversaries and important
happenings on their dates. Pam Hansen, Vice
President of Activities had run leaders report
on their pervious runs of our Picnic & the Great
Central Valley Chili Cook-Off. Upcoming runs of
a movie day the Word from Home Car Show,
Snelling Car show, Domino Day, Firebaugh
Queen Haul and Presidents Mystery Run were
discussed. Charlotte Renna reminded everyone
to be respectful and notify the run leader if you
have signed up for a run and are unable to
attend. Lupe Dawson, Sergeant at Arms was
not in attendance so Freida Null filled in and
collected 50 cents. Our Sunshine reporter, Jan
Pflepsen shared current news from our
members. Our Parliamentarian, Linda
Laningham will be collecting nominations in
September.
Our Picnic was reviewed – 61 people enjoyed the
picnic held with funds saved by having an
electronic newsletter. Craig Hansen asked the
membership if they would like to have the picnic
be an annual event. Charlotte Renna made a
motion to have the club fund an annual picnic,
Leigh Ann Severance seconded the motion and
was passed by a show of hands.
New Business:
Skip Severance mentioned a possible run in
September to the indoor racetrack at Sierra Vista
Mall. Mike Lebda is gathering information and
will present at the next meeting.
The next Board meeting will be held June 19 th
(instead of June 24 th ) at the Parks’.
The next General meeting will be July 15th.
Ed Kroeker motioned to adjourn the meeting and
was seconded by Tom Piercy.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 pm
