Civil Air Patrol<br />

The <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Cadet Squadron <strong>of</strong> the Civil Air Patrol, a U.S. Air Force<br />

Auxiliary, operates a program for young women and men, ages 12-21, who have<br />

an interest in aerospace education, emergency services, disaster relief and the<br />

cadet leadership program.<br />

Police Explorers is an organization that gives high<br />

school students a unique opportunity to participate in<br />

a range <strong>of</strong> activities, from community events to police<br />

training sessions. Meetings are once a week, where the<br />

Explorers are introduced to law enforcement. Qualified<br />

Explorers are <strong>of</strong>fered ride-alongs, where they ride<br />

with Post Advisors and provide support to the Police<br />

Department’s Field Operations. These Police Explorers also have the chance<br />

to participate in additional training sessions and learn more in depth about<br />

particular subjects.<br />

Fire Explorers<br />

The Fire Explorers program, open to teens ages<br />

14-18, is taught by highly trained advisors and<br />

conveys basic fire fighting skills and procedures.<br />

The Fire Explorers meet once a week for<br />

approximately four hours, which also count<br />

toward volunteer service hours.<br />

Unitown<br />

Unitown is a three-day program focusing<br />

on prejudice reduction and leadership<br />

development. The <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Multi-<br />

Cultural Advisory Committee sponsors<br />

Unitown, and the National Conference for<br />

Community and Justice facilitates the program.<br />

Skate Park<br />

This 13,000-square-foot facility is<br />

located in Betti Stradling Park, on the<br />

northwest corner <strong>of</strong> Wiles Road and<br />

<strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Drive, and features a<br />

four-foot half-pipe, various height ramps<br />

and grinding equipment. Rollerbladers<br />

and skateboarders can use the park to<br />

practice their skills. Hours <strong>of</strong> operation<br />

for the Skate Park vary by season.<br />

During the school year, typical hours<br />

are Monday through Friday from 3 to 9<br />

p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.<br />

and on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.<br />

The daily fee is $3 for members, and<br />

$7 for non-members. To be a member,<br />

the yearly fee for residents is $40,<br />

which includes insurance. Members<br />

can purchase a ten-day pass for $25.<br />

To become a Skate club member,<br />

non-residents must have a <strong>Coral</strong><br />

<strong>Springs</strong> non-resident card, which is<br />

$168 per fiscal year per family, plus<br />

the $40 membership fee.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> sponsors many teen recreational leagues, where teens from throughout<br />

the <strong>City</strong> can participate in organized sports leagues. The different sports <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

include baseball, lacrosse, roller hockey, football, cheerleading, s<strong>of</strong>tball, basketball<br />

and soccer.<br />

The <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Gymnasium hosts classes geared toward teens. There are a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> dance classes ranging from ballroom to belly dancing, break dancing to<br />

hip-hop and tap. There are karate and cardio kickboxing classes, plus many more.<br />

If you want to try your hand at design, there are classes for baking, chocolate<br />

design and scrapbooking.<br />

For teens who like the water environment, the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers aquatic programs.<br />

Whether you like the backstroke or freestyle, the <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Swim Club<br />

covers them all. Other more team-oriented sports include synchronized<br />

swimming and water polo. There are also diving lessons and lifeguard training<br />

available.<br />

The <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> Sportsplex is home to some <strong>of</strong> the best sporting facilities in<br />

Broward County. When the weather is hot, ice skating at Incredible Ice is a good<br />

way to cool <strong>of</strong>f. The Sportsplex is also home to the Tennis Center where teens<br />

can channel their inner Andy Roddick or Serena Williams. Whether you want<br />

to learn how to swim or consider yourself an expert, the Aquatic Complex has<br />

pools for swimmers and divers <strong>of</strong> all levels.<br />

Cypress Park is for teens who enjoy the outdoors. The park has a variety <strong>of</strong> fields<br />

for different sporting activities like soccer. The Jogging Park is available for anyone<br />

who likes to jog, run or sprint. The Outdoor Fitness Gym is a great way to add a<br />

little spice to an existing workout.<br />

To beat summer boredom and have some fun, the city <strong>of</strong>fers camps for teens.<br />

Kamp Kool is for sixth through eighth graders. Kamp Kool keeps kids busy<br />

through the camp’s special events, tournaments, games and field trips. For teens<br />

who need a little more excitement, there is a teen travel camp for students in<br />

sixth through ninth grades. The camp travels to different places like Boomers,<br />

Rapids Water Park, Gameworks and to movie theaters to see newly released<br />

movies.<br />

Routes and Connection Information<br />

Operating Times:<br />

The Community Bus Service operates Monday to Friday from<br />

8 a.m. to 5:55 p.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:55 p.m., and<br />

on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4:55 p.m. There is no service on on<br />

Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.<br />

The Community Bus Service works in conjunction with connections<br />

to BCT Routes 2, 34, 62, 83 and 88.<br />

There is a 25-cent fare for the community bus within the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong>. Riders making the connection with BCT will need to<br />

pay the appropriate fares.<br />

The buses operate as close to schedule as possible, although traffic<br />

conditions may cause the community bus to arrive slightly early or<br />

late. The buses are all wheelchair accessible.<br />

The Green Route Bus, which runs in the north side <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Springs</strong>, and the Blue Route Bus, which runs in the south side<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>, both make stops at Sample Road and University Drive,<br />

allowing riders to change routes.<br />

The community buses are white with green or blue striping to<br />

indicate the route.<br />
