WIMBLEDON LIVE ON
AND
The era of waiting up until late at night for delayed coverage of the world’s
oldest and most venerated tennis tournament is over.
BEGINNING on Monday June 20, Seven will broadcast
The 125th Championships, Wimbledon 2011, live
throughout Australia.
The broadcast will be hosted by Todd Woodbridge
with expert commentary from John Newcombe on the
40th anniversary of his third and final singles’ victory
at the All England Club. The team also includes Rennae
Stubbs and Sam Smith.
In addition, Seven will be taking commentary from a
clutch of the biggest names in tennis via the host
broadcaster BBC, among them John McEnroe, Boris
Becker, Lindsay Davenport and Tim Henman.
During the first week the live broadcast kicks off at
9pm (AEST) on 7TWO, and from 10pm on 7TWO
during the second week. The coverage will then be on
Channel 7 from 11pm each night.
All singles and doubles finals, as well as the singles
semi-finals, will also be exclusively live on Channel 7,
while starting on 7TWO in some states.
Message from Saul Shtein - Seven’s Head of Sport
“THIS is an historic moment for Seven. As the home
of The Australian Open, the AFL, V8 Supercars and
the Melbourne Cup we have long been the premier
sports broadcaster in Australian television. And now
we can welcome Wimbledon to the mix, the Holy
Grail of tennis.
“Having secured the first selection of the best two
matches each day, viewers on Seven will enjoy the
pick of the tennis crop. And best of all we can
guarantee it will be live on either 7TWO or Channel 7
and it won’t cost them a cent.
“Following on from our groundbreaking coverage of
the Australian Open earlier this year, we’ll also be
making sure fans are kept up-to-date with everything
that happens in and around the All England Club.
“If there’s a better match developing on another
court we won’t be afraid to switch to it. And when
London’s grey skies open up we’ll be safely tucked
away under the retractable roof on centre court and
bringing Australians all the action.”

COMMENTARY TEAM
Todd Woodbridge
Host
AFTER six years in the commentary box at the Australian
Open, Todd takes over the hosting chair for The 125 th
Championships, Wimbledon.
He is an engaging and insightful performer on air and has
fast become a favourite with viewers. His post-match
interview with Kim Clijsters at The Australian Open this year,
in which he speculated about her being pregnant, was one
of the light-hearted moments of the tournament.
As a player Todd’s record at Wimbledon is remarkable. He
won the doubles’ title nine times and achieved his career
high singles ranking of 19 after reaching the semi-finals of
Wimbledon in 1997. In all he claimed 83 ATP tournament
doubles titles, an all-time record.
“It’s a great honour to host our coverage,” Todd says.
“I can't wait to give the viewers at home an intricate
perspective of the Championships. Our commentary team
has so much experience and success at the Championships,
that inner knowledge of the pressures, traditions and
expertise of playing on grass will make great viewing.”
John Newcombe
Expert commentary
FORMER World No.1 John Newcombe joins Seven’s
commentary team on the 40th anniversary of his back-toback
Wimbledon victories.
Newcombe’s history at Wimbledon stretches back to 1965
when he won the doubles title with fellow Australian Tony
Roche. He and Roche would secure another four doubles
titles at the All England Club, and 12 Grand Slam titles in all,
more than any other men’s team in tennis history.
But it was his three singles victories at Wimbledon in 1967,
1970 and 1971 that made him a household name. With his
attacking serve-and-volley game he was also a dual winner
of both the Australian and US Opens. Overall, he won 26
Grand Slam major titles in all forms of the games.
“I think this is my 50th Wimbledon either as a player or
doing television, so for me Wimbledon is like a second
home,” Newcombe says.
“It’s a very exciting time of year and a great chance to catch
up with old friends. It’s always a fascinating tournament
over the two weeks.”

COMMENTARY TEAM
Rennae Stubbs
Expert commentary
RENNAE is widely regarded as one of the finest doubles
players in the history of Australian tennis. She can boast six
Grand Slam titles to her name – four in women’s doubles
and two in mixed doubles. She also held the trophy aloft at
Wimbledon twice, was named an ITF World Champion
alongside Lisa Raymond in 2001, and has represented her
country at three successive Olympic Games.
In fact, she has recorded more doubles triumphs than any
other Australian woman, winning tournaments with 11
different partners.
As a commentator Rennae also has a cheeky side that
viewers have come to love.
“Wimbledon to me means, tradition,” Rennae says.
“I love the grass, the crowds and how close they are to the
courts. The crowd support and knowledge of tennis and the
fact that no matter what time of the day, the supporters will
be lined up ready to watch.
“The grounds of the all England Club are so special and there
is nothing like walking through the gates at Wimbledon. It
always brings back special memories for me.”
Sam Smith
Expert commentary
BRITAIN’S Sam Smith has turned an impressive career as a
player into an outstanding one as a broadcaster.
A former No. 1 British women’s singles player, Sam has been
a member of the Eurosport, Sky Sports, BBC Radio and BBC
TV tennis commentary teams.
In 2011, she joined the Channel 7 summer of tennis team
for the third time and continues her fine work for Seven at
Wimbledon.
“I first went to Wimbledon on a trip with my prep school
when I was nine years old. I could never have imagined that
one day I would actually get to play on the courts and have
some of the best tennis experiences of my life,” Sam says.
As a player her highest career achievement was in reaching
the fourth round at Wimbledon in 1998 where she picked
up an ankle injury that resulted in two operations, four
months in plaster and effectively curtailed her climb up the
rankings.
She peaked at number 55 in the WTA rankings before the
injury ended her career.
