Regulars president's message
Dear Members
I would like to thank all of you for your support at the
Grand Opening of the new Lobby Lounge, Crossroads
Lounge and The Hangout on 23 February 2013. It was
a successful event and I am happy to say that we have
received positive response from members on our new
facilities, especially our lobby.
Since early February, we have also relaxed our dress
code policy on weekends and public holidays for
Crossroads Lounge, Garden Grill, Darts Lounge and
Karaoke Lounge and KTV Rooms. This is following
feedback from members that they prefer more
casual attire when they patronize the Club with their
families on weekends and public holidays. However,
to maintain a certain degree of decorum, sandals
and slippers are still not permitted in these outlets on
weekends.
I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight
to members that the Crossroads Lounge is a different
concept from the previous Sports Bar. The Crossroads
Lounge’s concept was conceived based on members’
feedback to have a more conducive place to drink
and chill out with friends and business associates. As
such, the ambience, décor and the smart attire dress
code policy (for weekdays) reflect this new concept.
The Hangout, on the other hand is a more casual place
with activities especially catered to the youngsters.
To whet your taste buds, we will be changing the
menu for the Atrium Café, Coffee Deli and bar outlets
from 8 April 2013. You can look forward to more
variety in our upcoming menu.
Lastly, I would like to ask for your support to
participate in our Member Satisfaction Survey 2013
which you will be receiving with your upcoming
statement of account. There will be extra incentives for
those who complete the survey online.
See you at the Club soon!
Yours Sincerely
Anthony lim
President
A couple of months ago, I shared with you our plan
to install more CCTV cameras to enhance the Club’s
security and surveillance efforts. This project has
finally been completed. We have also recently created
zebra crossings in our car park and will be installing
more bicycle parking kiosks to cater to the growing
demand among the cyclists.
On 3 February 2013, we invited guests from the
Aquatic Master Swim Club and Keppel Club to our
Invitational Swim Meet. It was an eventful day, with
a stunning 21 new records set. I would like to thank
everyone who participated and supported the event.
We recently had our Open House on 9 March 2013
to showcase our new facilities. Our guests were
impressed with our new facilities and some signed up
for our membership as well.
Regulars behind the scenes
Behind The Scenes
Have you ever wondered what our staff members do behind the scenes? Find out more from
this column where we will feature a staff member from a different department every issue.
We spent a day with Membership Services Assistant, Hafizah, to find out what she does
during a typical day at work.
forms and the suggestion book for distribution to
staff for their attention. Throughout the day, I will be
taking Mahjong room bookings, transferring calls
to various departments and outlets and answering
enquiries. Also, I will issue receipts to members who
come to the counter to make payments.
“My job includes managing all enquiries (phone,
walk-ins), sorting and distributing of mail,
collection of payment from members and guests,
managing membership services such as IU number
registration, loan of newspapers, magazines and
board games and facilities booking.
My typical day at work begins with picking up
newspapers from the Guard House, stamping them
and distributing them to the respective outlets. Then
I will prepare the counter for the daily operation
which includes cleaning the counter to ensure
that it is clean and tidy, checking emails and our
communication book to see if there are any matters
that require follow-up, then I will scan the feedback
The most challenging part of my job is handling
unhappy members, especially when members
exceed their credit limit. When handling such
matters, I have to be very patient and try
to understand their situation. Sometimes,
members might have overlooked their bill payment
or did not realize that they have exceeded their
spending limit. In a situation like this, I will advise
them that payment for the outstanding amount has
to be made before any transaction can go through.
If the member is still unhappy, I will seek advice
from my supervisor.
The most enjoyable part of my job is interacting
with young members who usually come to the Main
Reception for colouring materials. I love the laughter
of children and putting smiles on their faces.”
Did you know we have the following services
at the Main Reception?
• Portable universal charger for mobile phones
• Wheelchair for loan
• Umbrellas for loan
• Xbox and Wii games and controllers for The Hangout
• Board games, colouring materials and story books
• Deposit of wet umbrellas
• Books for loan
If you would require any of the above mentioned items or services, do approach the Main Reception for
enquiries.
the dress code policy on weekends
and public holidays for the following
outlets: Crossroads Lounge, Garden
Grill, Karaoke Lounge and Rooms
and Darts Lounge. Casual attire
is now allowed for these outlets
on weekends but slippers and
sandals are still not permitted.
For more details, please refer to
Clause 9 of the latest Club Bye-laws
on our website.
We have observed that some young members enter
The Hangout, clad in swimwear or walk in barefooted.
Swimwear must be confined to the swimming pool
area and adjoining outdoor areas only and walking
barefooted into the air-conditioned areas is not in line
with our dress code policy.
On several occasions, we have found kids jumping
onto the new sofas at the Main Lobby. We urge
parents to supervise their kids closely as we want
to ensure that the lobby is kept nice and tidy for
everyone’s enjoyment.
Pool Table and X-box
at The Hangout
Some members have
given feedback that the
coins get stuck in the coinoperated
pool table. In many instances, this problem
can be easily resolved by using more strength to
push the coins in. However, if the problem persists,
kindly report to the staff at the Main Reception or
Crossroads Lounge.
When using the X-box, please note that the sensor
covers a specific area of movement and moving out
of this area results in the players’ movements not
being properly detected. We have placed instructions
in The Hangout on how to use the X-box.
Screening of TV
channels
We would like to
inform members
that the televisions
at the Main Lobby
and Darts Lounge
only screen sports
channels. If you
would like to view
other channels, you
may proceed to the Coffee Deli. However, we hope
that members be considerate to other members
should they want to change the channel to their
preferred one.
Pool Etiquette
We have observed
that parents
sometimes feed their
children while they
are in the swimming
pool resulting in
food falling into the
pool. Not only is this
unhygienic, but will
also cause the pool
filter to work harder
to clean the pool. Some children also use cutlery
from the Coffee Deli as “toys” in the pool. Forks
and knives are very sharp and can cause injury to
children if left in the pool. Some kids have been
spotted filling up the plastic covers for wet umbrellas
to make “water bombs”. The plastic covers are
meant strictly for wet umbrellas only. We urge
parents to educate kids on the proper behaviour
and supervise them closely while using the pool
facilities.
Bringing Pets into the Club
We have spotted on some
occasions members bringing in
pets (dogs, parrots etc.) into the
Club. Please be reminded that
pets are not allowed in the Club
(as per Bye-Law 7.3).
Regulars moments service excellence
of excellence
MOMENTS OF EXCELLENCE
I am writing to express my thanks to Adrian Chew
and team, in particular Joe Marie Cabagua and Aaron
(part-timer) for making my MBA Celebration Party
on 8 December 2012 a memorable one. Chef Simon
was also patient even though my guests came later
than expected. The food was more than ample. As a
result, many of us helped ourselves to many rounds.
What was even more memorable was the service
provided by Joe and Aaron, ensuring that all of us
were served well. Both Joe and Aaron were extremely
patient with us, and continued to give their best,
despite a long day.
Indeed, I am pleased to say that the service in the
Club has improved by leaps and bounds. Please
continue to keep up the good work and make this
Club one that members are proud of, and always
willing to invite their guests for any occasion,
because they can be confident that their guests will
be delighted with the best service possible.
Please express my gratitude to Joe and Aaron
again. They have worked really hard, and do deserve
a pat on the back.
Keep it up, SGCC!
Best Regards,
Gayle Wong
Special Cycling
Sheltered bicycle kiosk near Gym at Palm Wing
Bicycle kiosk beside Security Manager’s office
Zebra crossing from Car Park B to main club house
Cycling is a great way to exercise while enjoying
the environment around you. Cycling is mainly an
aerobic activity where your heart, blood vessels and
lungs get a workout. Cycling is good for the muscles,
especially for toning and building muscles in the lower
half of the body, and is a great low-impact mode of
exercise for those with joint conditions or injuries. If
you are looking to lose some weight, cycling helps to
burn a lot of calories, it keeps your weight in check
and ramps up your metabolism even after the ride is
over. Cycling is also very cost-effective, not only do
you save on petrol but also on parking fees. It is also
great for the environment – it is pollution free and
helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
When cycling, be sure to keep a look out for motorists
and pedestrians. As a rule, it is best to ride in the
direction of traffic, staying as far to the left but making
sure there is room to handle emergencies and that
you do not ride so close to the left that you run the
risk of hitting the curb. Make sure you are aware of
your surroundings, know what is behind you and
watch out for what is in front of you. Also, make your
presence felt by wearing bright coloured clothing.
If you live around the vicinity of the Club, you may
consider cycling instead of driving to the Club. We
have bicycle parking kiosks located near the Security
Manager’s office (main gate) and sheltered ones
near the Gym at Palm Wing. We will be installing
more bicycle parking kiosks near the Gym area soon.
We would like to remind cyclists who park near the
Security Manager’s office to exit the Club via the
Heliconia Wing instead of the main gate so that you
do not go against the flow of the traffic.
On the topic of safety, we have recently created some
zebra crossings near the main gate for pedestrians,
especially those who are shuttling between the Main
Clubhouse and Heliconia Wing. Motorists, please take
extra caution when driving within the Club by reducing
your speed and giving way to pedestrians.
Mother’s Day. The regular a la carte menu will not be available at Atrium Café and
Coffee Deli from 6pm onwards. Only the above buffet is available and advanced
reservation is advised.
Here are some of the
dishes offered during
this Penang food fair:
Penang Fried Kway Teow
Fried Kway Teow is Penang’s
most popular hawker dish,
fried with noodles, cockles,
prawns and eggs. Each plate is
individually fried upon ordering to
maintain its taste and quality.
Oh Chien (Fried Oyster
Omelette)
Fried Oh Chien is a favourite
hawker food in Penang. It consists
of rice flour batter, chives, egg and
oysters, fried in a flat griddle over
high heat.
Penang Hokkien Mee
(Prawn Noodle Soup)
Arguably Penang’s most favoured
dish, Hokkien Mee is a bowl of
noodle soup consisting of yellow
noodles, prawns, sliced pork,
kangkong, bean sprouts and
hard-boiled eggs served with
generous amount of broth and
topped with crispy deep-fried
pork lard.
Char Mui (Fried Porridge)
This is one ‘unique’ dish which is
difficult to find, even in Penang.
This dish is made up of prawns,
meat, dried cuttlefish, porridge
and other ingredients. The mixture
is stir-fried until thickened, before
adding lots of chives (Ku Chai).
Char Hum (Fried Cockles)
The cockles are fried with
a special sweet sauce from
Penang. The sauce blends well
with the fresh cockles to bring out
its flavour.
Nasi Lemak
A dish that requires little
introduction, Nasi Lemak is one of
Malaysia’s famous national dishes.
This simple serving of coconut
rice is topped with sambal, fried
peanuts and ikan bilis, sliced
cucumber and a wedge of hard
boiled egg.
Bak Kut Teh
Bak Kut Teh, loosely translated
as “meat bone tea” is cooked
with meaty pork ribs simmered
in a complex broth of herbs
and spices. Each mouthful of
the soup leaves your mouth
lingering with the aroma from the
nourishing herbs.
Assam Laksa
The main ingredients of this dish
include shredded fish, finely
sliced cucumber, onions, red
chillies, pineapple, lettuce, mint
and ginger buds, and topped off
with shrimp paste (Hae Ko).
Penang Laksa
This is a coconut-based
curry soup with ingredients
like bean curd puffs, fish
slices, shrimp and cockles.
Lor Bak (Ngo Hiang)
Penang is famous for its “Lor
Bak” (Spiced Meat Roll). This dish
is served with sliced cucumber,
chilli sauce and dark brown gravy
for dipping.
Chendol
Chendol is a very delicate and
fragrant dessert which is served
with red bean, shaved ice, and
coconut milk and drizzled with
palm sugar syrup.
Chinese New Year Lion and Dragon Dance
11 February 2013
To usher in the year of the Snake, the Club held its
annual Lion and Dragon Dance event at the newly
renovated Main Lobby on the second day of the
Chinese New Year. An award winning lion dance troupe
gave a dazzling performance which included drum
performances and Cai Qing (plucking the greens).
Club President, Mr Anthony Lim and Vice President,
Mr Jimmy Ng had the honour of “dotting the eye” of
the lion, a Chinese tradition of painting the eye of the
lion before the start of the lion dance to awaken the
spirit of the lion. Three prosperous-looking Fortune
Gods (Cai Shen) marched down the stairway from
Garden Grill and gave members and guests a
surprise. The three Fortune Gods then presented
three lucky items which symbolises, prosperity, luck
and fortune to Trustees Mr Michael Khor, Mr Hendrick
Koh and Mr Anthony Tan.
After the performances, attendees waited patiently in
line to receive their ang pows and oranges from the
General Committee members and Trustees.
