Parent Day Feb. 18: Come One,Come All!

Plan to join our Academy students and staff for Spring Parent Day Saturday,

Feb. 18. The day will begin with a softball double-header (games at 8 and

10 a.m.) and will continue with the JROTC Promotion Ceremony, the

Faculty Forum (a time to visit with all faculty and administrators in the

library), two informative Parent Seminars, the Physics Boat Regatta, and

the final showing of "Pirates of Penzance" (you can also see this show

Thursday or Friday night). We would love to have you on campus for all the

"Spring in the Park" Music

Festival in Dallas April 27-

through several fundraisers.

SMA's Fine Arts Department will present the Gilbert and Sullivan classic

"The Pirates of Penzance" Feb. 16-18 at 7:30 p.m. on the stage of the

Robinson Christian Center. "The Pirates of Penzance" is a comic opera

revolving around Frederic, whose apprenticeship to a group of pirates is

coming to an end until a leap year loophole threatens to keep him bound

for life. Falling for the beautiful daughter of the Major General, Frederic

must determine how to reconcile his sense of duty with his love for Mabel.

Battles, betrayal and betrothals ensue before the conflicts are resolved and

love wins the day. Admission for all showings is $5 for adults and $2 for

children/students (or free for those with an SMA ID). Click here to

Basketball Playoff Games Tuesday

Both the boys and girls varsity basketball

teams will play their first games in the

state playoffs Tuesday night. The boys will

be at home against Temple Central Texas

Christian for an 8 p.m. bi-district match.

The girls travel to Fort Worth to play Lake

Country Christian School at 6:30 p.m. for

their bi-district game.

The boys honor Coach Price


Country was the same team that

eliminated the Lady Bears in their first

playoff game last year. A win for the

teams would send them on to the regional

round of playoffs, with games likely on

Saturday. In other sports news, senior

Tiara Hansen received the Leadership

Award for the San Marcos area at the

National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration Banquet Feb. 4 at

Texas State University.

Soccer Team Ends Playoff Run in Carrollton

Experiencing an unfortunate déjà vu,

the Bears varsity soccer team lost 0-8

in the regional round of the TAPPS

state playoffs Feb. 10 to Carrollton's

Prince of Peace Christian School, the

five-time defending state champion

who knocked the Bears out of the

playoff race last year. Despite the

loss, the Bears have had one of their

best seasons ever, raking in the most wins of any school in TAPPS Division 3

with 15 and the most goals in the division with 74. This year's Bear squad

also set a school record for wins (the previous record was 13 wins in 1992-

93) and blew away the school record for goals scored. The Bears also

Art Students Enter Work at TAPPS District Meet

Seventeen art students will be entering work in

ten different categories at the district TAPPS

art meet today in Austin. Eleven of the

students will be entering on-site categories at

the meet--that group includes Tom Brotherton,

Claire Carlson, Omar Ceron, Emma Hartsock,

Wendy Ho, Karry Liang, Ayla Roper,

Quandanique Semien, Jason Sun, Yaoyun Xiao

and Sunny Zhao. Others with art entries are

Allan Bui, Christian Keller, Karen Malone,

Caroline Roberts, Sara Schack and Wenda Zhang. Those who place high

enough at district will qualify for the state TAPPS meet March 24.

Four Swimmers Headed to State Meet

Four Bear swimmers have qualified for

the TAPPS State Swimming/Diving

Championship Feb. 17-18 in San

Antonio. Senior Zane Shirley will swim

the 200 yard freestyle and will also be

part of the 200 yard freestyle boys

relay team with senior Deli Xu and

juniors David Li and Tom Brotherton.

The four swimmers qualified for state

following their performance Feb. 3 at

the TAPPS North Regional

Championship Meet in Mansfield.

Others participating in that meet

were senior Herriott Parker; juniors Caroline Roberts and Naomi Umadia;

and freshman Amber Malone. The swim team coach is Adrien Thom.

contest after qualifying to

advance from the Level I

Last Day to Register for PONY League Baseball

Today is the

last day to

register for the

Academy's PONY


baseball team.

So far, there

has been great

response and two different teams will likely be formed. Practices begin

Wednesday of this week at 4 p.m. on the SMA practice field. All the

information you need to know, including the application form, is on the

school website's PONY League page.

consists of online tests

that the teams complete

together. The Bowl is

designed to prepare

students for college

entrance exams by testing

their knowledge with SAT/

ACT-type questions in the

areas of JROTC

curriculum, English, Math

and Science.

Seniors Show Their Spirit With Long-Awaited Bonfire

Following a Winter Sports/Playoffs Pep Rally Feb. 8, the Class of 2012 lit

their bonfire, which had been postponed from Homecoming due to the

dry weather conditions.

Third Distinguished Lecture Set for Feb. 15

Upper level honors students will learn about

supply chain optimization Feb. 15 when an

industrial engineering instructor from Texas

State University presents the third lecture in

this year's SMA-Texas State Distinguished

Lecture Series. Dr. Jesus Jimenez, assistant

professor at the Texas State's Ingram School

of Engineering, will address the students at 2

Dr. Jesus Jimenez

p.m. in the school library; the event is open

to the public. This is the third year that the Academy has partnered with

Texas State for the Distinguished Lecture Series. The fourth and final

speaker from the Ingram School of Engineering will be Dr. Larry Larson,

who is scheduled for March 27.

New Members Inducted Into NHS and NJHS

Fifteen students were inducted into

the National Honor Society Feb. 8

during a special school-wide

assembly. The group included

sophomores Echo Chang, Rosalina

Hurt, Jamie Lambert and Juncheng

Paul Pan; juniors Hunter Bilson,

Xiaoming Dong, Justin Driscoll, Sarah

Gonzales, Zhiming Jiang, Shanil

Jiwani, Ian LaMarsh and Rachel

Zhang; and seniors Chris Mormino,

New NJHS members at Induction

Rachel Rovner and Jason Sun. Another 24 students were inducted into the

National Junior Honor Society at the same time. That group

included freshmen Jamie Choi, Pei-Chiao Lin, Logan Mitchell, Seth

Ndumbe, John Nguyen, Alley Tijerina and transfer member Amber Malone;

eighth graders Jocelyn Carter, Sean Driscoll, DJ Hayes, Alex Helstab,

Mackenzie Helstab, Isaac Holloway, Edward Im, Marshall Marburger and

Jorge Serrano; and seventh graders Celeste Barrientos, Daylan Davalos,

Morgan Gamblin, Conner Hays, Isaiah Ridge, Abry Solis, Keelin Talton,

Savannah Turley and Tanner Yarbrough. Congratulations to all the new NHS

and NJHS members!

7th Grade History Students Recreate Battle of Alamo

Miles Allan, Matthew Rindahl and

that the seventh grade Texas History

classes created in Mr. Bourbon's

classroom. The model is impressive

not only in size but in accuracy and

detail, and the seventh graders are

eager to show it off. Parents are

invited to drop by on Parent Day to

see the exhibit or to come by any day before or after school. Remember

the Alamo!

Seniors Should Apply Now for Scholarships!

Pedernales Electric Cooperative will give out 25 college scholarships to

seniors (20 for $1,000 and 5 for $5,000). The deadline to apply is March 1.

Visit their website for more information. Central Texas Medical Center also

has a $1,000 scholarship (Deadline is March 31). For more information, visit

the CTMC website. The deadline for the Best Buy Scholarship is in just two

days--find out more on that one at their website. These and other

scholarship opportunities are also listed on the Academy website (Class of
