forces and thereby ignites a response. A
catalyst personifies the adage:
“It is not what you believe–It’s what
you believe enough in to do. It is not
about the resources–it is about the
unlimited possibilities.”
Donors are catalysts who share our passion
and mission by advancing educational
opportunities for students to make a positive
impact on society. Catalysts have vision.
Catalysts have a driven focus to get involved.
Catalysts do what needs to be done. Catalysts
don't accept “no” for an answer.
For 104 years, San Marcos Academy has
changed the lives of students by fostering
the development of their full potential, so
we too are catalysts, enhancing student
opportunities for the future.
In envisioning how we, as partners, can
become catalysts for change, a quote from
publisher Malcolm Forbes comes to mind:
“Education's purpose is to replace an empty
mind with an open one.” In other words, we
must help our students to think long and
hard, critically, about the past, the present
and the future—to foster the emotional
intelligence of our students so that they are
equipped to confidently confront the
responsibilities and frustrations of
citizenship and leadership in a complex

As her senior yearbook photo reveals, LEE HAGE JAMAIL had a confident twinkle in her eye and a great zest
for life when she graduated from San Marcos Academy in May of 1944. During the ten years she spent at SMA,
Lee developed a passion for service and a generosity of spirit that would become her defining characteristics.

The Lee Hage Jamail Special Event Center will serve as the foundational setting for this
catalytic change. Within the facility are components to create an environment of
enlightenment and appreciation for the Arts—a place where sparks are tossed out to ignite
imagination for generations to come. The Fine Arts Center wing will enhance the
educational experience allowing adequate space to expand and grow a rigorous curriculum.

An enlarged new gym complex
will allow us to dedicate a
30-year-old existing facility to the
students of our rapidly growing
middle school and will provide our
high school students with much
needed space. We believe this
new facility will challenge the
critical growth of body, mind and
spirit for our student athletes to
become well-rounded citizens
and contributing leaders for the

Academy, we are filled with excitement about the
future of our alma mater. SMA is a special place
that has made a difference in the lives of countless
young people during its 104-year history. It
certainly had a positive impact on our lives. The two
of us met while attending the Academy. We also
enjoyed sharing the Academy experience with our
siblings, Ron and Steve Mafrige and Marilyn
Mauney Womack, who also attended SMA. For all
of us, it was not just a school; it was a home where
lifelong relationships developed. Because the
Academy met many of our needs, we hope and pray
that it will continue to serve the needs of other
young people who attend for many years to come.

achievement in the athletic arena can enhance the
pursuit of academic excellence.

“During my entire high school career at San
Marcos Academy, I have enjoyed
participating in various sports, including
volleyball, basketball and softball. Through
athletics, I have had the unique opportunity
not only to enjoy the activities, but also to
establish and enhance friendships, learning
the important lessons of teamwork,
determination and loyalty along the way.
The varsity gym in the Special Event Center
will make sports participation attainable for
more student athletes. It will be easier for
the girls to share space and time with the
boys during basketball season and will add
to the experience of volleyball, too. All the
students will greatly appreciate this
fabulous facility.”
The new Special Event Center on the Academy's
campus reflects our continued commitment to
athletics as a component of a well-rounded
education. In the games of basketball and volleyball,
the efforts of the individual are paramount, and
success comes in large measure from the
development of qualities such as self-discipline and
perseverance.
Each time our athletes step on the court, they are
entering a “classroom,” where valuable life lessons in
character and commitment are taught. We believe
these lessons will endure once student athletes make
the transition from athletic competition to the playing
fields of life.
Imagine the impact of a professionally designed,
dual-purpose facility set amid the natural beauty of
the Academy's Hill Country campus setting.
The Lee Hage Jamail Special Event Center is located
adjacent to the Nancy and Don Mafrige Fitness Center
and the Kokernot Gymnasium, and will serve as the
home of the Bears varsity basketball and volleyball

The Fine Arts Complex wing of the Special Events
Center will provide a rehearsal hall for band and
orchestra, a vocal ensemble room, individual practice
and teaching rooms, a multi-purpose black box
theatre/performance hall that may also serve as a
venue for various meetings and gatherings, faculty
offices, library, student lounge and storage space.

The centerpiece of the Special Event Center will be
the Lee Hage Jamail Memorial located in the Main
Lobby adjacent to the Academy Hall of Fame.
“Before I came to the Academy, I had
almost zero contact with the fine arts. The
first arts class I took part in was band, and
since then I've really immersed myself into
the experience of the arts. I have taken
part in several musical productions, am an
avid actor in theater, sing in the choir, and
as a senior, I serve as the Head Drum
Major in band. My experiences with the
fine arts have been invaluable to me,
teaching me lessons, helping me grow
creatively, and allowing me to meet
amazing people who have had a
tremendous impact on my life. Thanks to
this department, many, myself included,
have benefited whether they know it not.”
The Gymnasium wing within the Special Event Center
will include offices for the men's and women's
coaching staff, boys' and girls' locker rooms, and of
course, the home court of the “ Bears.”

basketball at the Academy. As we anticipate the
construction of our new varsity gym, I am
confident that it will increase participation, build
pride in our program and enable our female
athletic teams to be more competitive in the
coming years. What a blessing it is to work
alongside the other Christian coaches here at
the Academy and to see the kind of impact they
are having on our students, including my older
son, who now attends school at SMA. My goal
as a coach is to be the best teacher, role model,
and competitor that I can possibly be. And, in
turn, I hope to help the young ladies on my team
develop not only their God-given athletic talents

FUTURE
At graduation last spring, I walked out of the auditorium in the midst of
cheerful cap-and-gown clad faculty members and was greeted by a
senior who had just received her diploma. As we awaited parents and
friends, I noticed the tears streaming down her face. She said, “I am
really happy today and I am really sad. I am graduating with honors
from the Academy, but I am leaving as well. I am happy that I will be in
college soon, but I really don't want to leave. This is my home. My best
friends are here. I love it here, and if I could, I would like to start all over
again and relive every single day that I have been here.”

San Marcos Academy is a special place with marvelous students. This
graduating senior was a great example of the phenomenon we call
“The Academy Experience.” The Academy experience is easy to
recognize but difficult to describe. It is life-changing. For some students,
it happens in the stillness before early morning chapel when all is quiet
except for the soft pealing of the chimes. For others it is on a
sun-drenched playing field amidst cheers and struggles shared with
teammates. It also can happen during a walk across campus with a best
friend at the end of a busy day, a time when plans and dreams are
shared in lives that are unfolding day by day at San Marcos Academy.
Wherever it happens, the Academy experience is companion to
traditions and special times that transcend the classroom, and it
happens because of the steadfast support, the financial generosity, and
the encouragement of people like you.
For more than 100 years, San Marcos Academy students have
embraced the Academy's core values of faith, integrity, academic
excellence, and servant leadership. Once these students have finished
their course of studies, they have gone on in their lives to make a
significant impact in their community and in the world. Lee Jamail was
one of those students.
Lee arrived on the Academy campus during the depths of the Great
Depression. She was only four years old--too young to be placed in
traditional campus housing--so she moved into the Academy
president's home to live with the president's family. From being the
Academy's youngest student, to becoming one of our most
distinguished graduates, Lee Jamail traveled a great distance during
her personal Academy experience and later on in the life she lived.
Winston Churchill once said, “we make a living by what we get; we
make a life by what we give.” Lee Jamail lived by that principle, coming
from humble beginnings and achieving a remarkable list of
accomplishments as a community leader, a philanthropist of great
distinction, and a supporter of the arts and education.
The spirit of Lee Jamail drives our Transforming Lives Campaign at the
Academy. The vision of this campaign represents not only a destination,
but a transformational journey of hope, commitment and dedication to
future generations of students who will come to the Academy and find
their own personal Academy experiences. The building that will carry
Lee's name will be the centerpiece of the campus and a symbol of the
Academy in motion as we bring up a new generation of leaders. My
heartfelt appreciation to alumni, donors and friends of the Academy
who will join us in our Transforming Lives Campaign. Let us continue to
dream big dreams. Together we can build a special place for our
students where they might find their own Academy experience. . .their
foundation for the future.

defining moment in our history. We are proud of our 104-year-old heritage and
must never forget it. However, our world is changing and the challenge of that
change to San Marcos Academy mandates that we move forward with visionary
ambition not only to sustain, but also to enhance and create an environment of
critical elements and opportunities that will strengthen our academic standing and
programmatic focus.
Taking this bold step forward requires another level of support. In this world of
change, philanthropic support will be key to our success. We invite you to

The Transforming Lives Campaign will provide funds to transplant our outgrown

Added space for both academic faculty and coaching faculty will facilitate teaching

one-on-one instruction.

friends of the Academy. It will provide a home for the Academy's Athletic Hall of
Fame. The facility will represent the first step of our commitment to a new future

school at the junior and high school levels in America.

Founded in 1907, San Marcos Academy is a coeducational, Christian boarding and day school for 7th through 12th
grade students, located in the beautiful Texas hill country. The Academy offers a rigorous college preparatory
curriculum, enhanced by leadership training opportunities, a strong Fine Arts Department, and a competitive athletic
program. Enrollment in the fall of 2011 was just under 300, the highest in 13 years, with students representing ten
foreign countries, six U.S. states, and 50 cities throughout Texas. Rich in tradition and fully accredited, San Marcos
