2012* Traveling Fellowship Application Guidelines
In the spring of 2012, SMFA President Chris Bratton and the Board of Governors of the
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will award Traveling Fellowships (formerly
Scholarships). These annual travel grants give Museum School graduates financial
assistance for travel and study in support of ongoing, serious art investigation.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the 2012 Traveling Fellowship competition, an applicant must be a
Museum School alumnus/a holding a Studio Diploma or degree (BFA, BFA+BA/BS,
MFA).
Those who previously applied for, but did not win a Traveling Scholarship are eligible.
Those who have previously been awarded a Traveling Scholarship are not eligible.
Those who have outstanding debts to SMFA are not eligible. Alumni who currently
teach at or are affiliated with SMFA are eligible.
APPLICATION
The deadline for receipt of all application materials is Monday, January 23, 2012
at 5 pm.
Applicants must fill out and submit the application along with the following materials:
1. Travel Proposal: A typed proposal (250–500 words) outlining your proposed
destination(s) and reasons why the fellowship would contribute to your artistic
development.
2. Application Fee: A nonrefundable fee of $25, payable by check or money order to:
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
3. Documentation Materials: Digital documentation of recently (within the last three
years) completed works. Do not send original work or slides. Documentation must be
labeled with your name and title of work and may be in the form of:
• Five digital images (Mac compatible) representing five two-dimensional
works
or
• Ten digital images representing five three-dimensional or five
installation-based works
or

• One VHS,DVD or CD representing up to five minutes of one video,film,
performance or sound piece, or one minute each of five different
pieces*
• The jury process is anonymous. Remove your name from digital images
and video introductions.
Digital image specifications:
-All images must be in JPEG format**-Resolution: 72 pixels per inch (screen resolution)
-Maximum image height: 600 pixels -Maximum image width: 900 pixels
**Individual JPEG files only; do not submit TIFF, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.
4. Documentation List: A typed description of each piece, including: Your Name;
Title of work; Year of completion; Media; Size (H x W x D); and, if applicable: Location -
Duration
5. Artwork Release Form: Please fill out, sign and return with your application
materials if you agree to give the School permission to use and/or photograph the
images you are submitting for publicity purposes. (Optional)
6. SASE: Self-addressed stamped envelope to receive notification of results. Applicants
who do not include a SASE will not receive notification by mail of the award recipients.
NOTE: All images will be kept in the alumni archives. Do not send the only copy of your
work. Due to the volume of submissions, application materials in whole or in part will not
be returned.
All applicants will be notified in the late spring of 2011. Recipients of the Traveling
Fellowships will be recognized at the Museum School’s May 2011 Commencement. At
the conclusion of the one-year fellowship period, the Traveling Fellows will be eligible to
compete for a one-person exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

note that from 2014 ELIGIBILITY IS GOING TO CHANGE and only alumni who graduated
within five years of application will be eligible to apply.
