<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Boston</strong><br />

<strong>2012*</strong> <strong>Traveling</strong> Fellowship Application Guidelines<br />

In <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> 2012, SMFA President Chris Bratton and <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Governors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Boston</strong>, will award <strong>Traveling</strong> Fellowships (formerly<br />

Scholarships). These annual travel grants give <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> graduates financial<br />

assistance for travel and study in support <strong>of</strong> ongoing, serious art investigation.<br />

ELIGIBILITY<br />

To be eligible for <strong>the</strong> 2012 <strong>Traveling</strong> Fellowship competition, an applicant must be a<br />

<strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> alumnus/a holding a Studio Diploma or degree (BFA, BFA+BA/BS,<br />

MFA).<br />

Those who previously applied for, but did not win a <strong>Traveling</strong> Scholarship are eligible.<br />

Those who have previously been awarded a <strong>Traveling</strong> Scholarship are not eligible.<br />

Those who have outstanding debts to SMFA are not eligible. Alumni who currently<br />

teach at or are affiliated with SMFA are eligible.<br />

APPLICATION<br />

The deadline for receipt <strong>of</strong> all application materials is Monday, January 23, 2012<br />

at 5 pm.<br />

Applicants must fill out and submit <strong>the</strong> application along with <strong>the</strong> following materials:<br />

1. Travel Proposal: A typed proposal (250–500 words) outlining your proposed<br />

destination(s) and reasons why <strong>the</strong> fellowship would contribute to your artistic<br />

development.<br />

2. Application Fee: A nonrefundable fee <strong>of</strong> $25, payable by check or money order to:<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Boston</strong>.<br />

3. Documentation Materials: Digital documentation <strong>of</strong> recently (within <strong>the</strong> last three<br />

years) completed works. Do not send original work or slides. Documentation must be<br />

labeled with your name and title <strong>of</strong> work and may be in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong>:<br />

• Five digital images (Mac compatible) representing five two-dimensional<br />

works<br />

or<br />

• Ten digital images representing five three-dimensional or five<br />

installation-based works<br />

or


• One VHS,DVD or CD representing up to five minutes <strong>of</strong> one video,film,<br />

performance or sound piece, or one minute each <strong>of</strong> five different<br />

pieces*<br />

• The jury process is anonymous. Remove your name from digital images<br />

and video introductions.<br />

Digital image specifications:<br />

-All images must be in JPEG format**-Resolution: 72 pixels per inch (screen resolution)<br />

-Maximum image height: 600 pixels -Maximum image width: 900 pixels<br />

**Individual JPEG files only; do not submit TIFF, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.<br />

4. Documentation List: A typed description <strong>of</strong> each piece, including: Your Name;<br />

Title <strong>of</strong> work; Year <strong>of</strong> completion; Media; Size (H x W x D); and, if applicable: Location -<br />

Duration<br />

5. Artwork Release Form: Please fill out, sign and return with your application<br />

materials if you agree to give <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> permission to use and/or photograph <strong>the</strong><br />

images you are submitting for publicity purposes. (Optional)<br />

6. SASE: Self-addressed stamped envelope to receive notification <strong>of</strong> results. Applicants<br />

who do not include a SASE will not receive notification by mail <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award recipients.<br />

NOTE: All images will be kept in <strong>the</strong> alumni archives. Do not send <strong>the</strong> only copy <strong>of</strong> your<br />

work. Due to <strong>the</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> submissions, application materials in whole or in part will not<br />

be returned.<br />

All applicants will be notified in <strong>the</strong> late spring <strong>of</strong> 2011. Recipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Traveling</strong><br />

Fellowships will be recognized at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s May 2011 Commencement. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one-year fellowship period, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Traveling</strong> Fellows will be eligible to<br />

compete for a one-person exhibition at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Boston</strong>.<br />
