Seniors of
the class of 2011 enjoyed
a bittersweet
prom May 21, a week
before graduation.
Prom of 2011
was held at the St. Joseph’s
Family Center in
Akron. The junior executive
committee chose
the location in 2010.
The theme of
prom was chosen by the
Prom Committee, which
was run by Alex Mayer.
The prom’s theme was
“Candy Coated memories.”
SMFHS hosted Prom
Promise May 20 in order to discourage
students from drinking
and driving after prom.
Prom Promise was
organized by SMFHS teacher
Alex McMahan. According to
Nationwide.com, Prom Promise
is a national movement that
Nationwide insurance began in
1990 in order to prevent drunk
driving.
John Moyer organized
a skit for Prom Promise
with his AP U.S. Government
classes after the AP test. Students
volunteered to be in the
skit and helped Moyer write the
skit.
Prom Promise began
when seniors entered the auditorium.
Students entered the
auditorium where a casket was
set up on the stage. Dr. Rev.
David Zachrich from the Tallmadge
Lutheran Church gave
a ceremony for John Smith,
who was played by senior Jack
Veatch. The sermon involved
made by members of
the Prom Committee.
Decorations included
candy as center
pieces, a candy bar and
cut outs of figurines
from the game Candyland.
A walkway designed
like the board
game was placed on the
stage for Grand March.
Prom festivities
began at 5 p.m.. Students
arrived at Grand
March hours prior to
the march in order to
ensure they had a place
early in line. Members
of Prom Court led the
march, which was announced
by Tom Stefan.
Hundreds of people
filled the auditorium
to watch others walk
across stage, dressed
up and ready for prom.
In between
Grand March and the
dance most people
went out to dinner.
They went to dinner
in rented limos and
“party” or tour busses.
“My favorite
part of Prom was the
hot and gorgeous weekend
spent with amazing
people and having
a terrific time.”
The dance began
at 9 p.m. and was
deejayed by Zone Enter-
good decisions.
Students were then
led outside where the casket was
placed in a hearse and they followed
the hearse to the scene of
the crime. A car that was placed
outside for a week prior to Prom
Promise was used for the scene
of the car crash. The car was
placed outside of the school on
Graham Road with a sign that
read “Drive Safe, Drive Sober.”
At the scene of the
crash Jack Veatch lay motionless
in front of the car, having
apparently been hurled out
of the front windshield. Ryan
Several ambulances and fire
trucks arrived at the scene of the
crash. The LifeFlight helicopter
from Akron Children’s hospital
arrived at the school to pick
up one of the girls who were
playing injured girls in the back
seat.
After the scene outside
the students filed back into
the auditorium for a trial for the
drunk driver. The judge was
played by Trina Poole. The jury
decided that the drunk driver is
guilty and sentenced him to 12
years in prison.
Following the trial
a spearker addressed the students
about the loss of his son,
Ryan. Ryan passed away when
he sat in the back of a pick up
truck with his intoxicated friend
behind the wheel. Ryan died
instantly after the crash due to
internal bleeding.
Students learned a
lot about driving drunk and the
message seemed to resonate
with all students.
they make available on
their website. The deejay
played current songs that
most students danced to.
Prom court was decided
this year based
on certain senior superlative
winners.
The court was
announced at senior
banquet and consisted
of Dan Rauh, Matt
After the dance
came to an end at midnight,
students went to the high
school to participate in
games and other activities
at this year’s reality television-themed
After Prom.
Parents and other
volunteers ran the activities,
which included poker tables
and Minute to Win It games.
In the gym, there were inflatables,
cornhole games
and other various activities.
Throughout the
night, seniors could win
tickets and use them to
win prizes. Prizes included
flat screen TVs,
iPod docks and appliances,
and were donated
by parents and businesses.
“I was so excited
male court members.
The girls on court were
Katie Betts, Katie Hill,
Julie Rooney, Hope
Caldwell, Veronica
Whitmer, Emily Rusnak
and Amanda Cacioppo
“The dance was
a lot of fun,” Mitchell
said. “The deejay was
nice and tried to keep the
energy up all night. The
candy was also good,
but I wish I could’ve
Mitchell said. “It will
be great in my new dorm
room. After Prom was awesome
but winning a prize
made it that much better.”
Food and refreshments
were provided by
Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut
and other restaurants.
Over twelve
hours were put into setting
up for After Prom.
After Prom ended
at four in the morning.
Most students then went
home to sleep until early
the next morning , when
six charter busses took over
300 students to Cedar Point.
The busses arrived
at the park around ten
a.m. and left at 7:30 p.m.
“Cedar Point was
so much fun,” senior Emily
Rusnak said. “The weather
was beautiful and the lines
were short. It was fun hanging
out with my friends.”
Jessica Luczywo
I’m not in a position to
give advice and I’m not sentimental,
which leaves me with very few
options on what to write for this
obligatory “farewell”. Instead of
saying goodbye and thanking you
for the pleasure, or ranting about
what a waste of time producing this
paper has felt like, I’m going to do
Jenna Sawan
My fellow Stow-Munroe Falls High
Schoolians, I thought about what to write in
this farewell, and I thought a lot, and then I
thought some more and did even more thinking
after that and I realized I simply was not
wise enough to drop any crazy brilliant advice
on you that you haven’t heard before. I further
realized that I’ve lived about the same amount
of life that you have, and couldn’t really share
anything with you that you haven’t already experienced
yourself.
I do not feel like I am in a position
to give my peers any advice, but I will
attempt to do so anyway. My advice to the
Class of 2011 is to walk with confid ence.
Over the past four years, rarely
have I been asked for a pass when I have
walked through the hallways. Though there
may be a variety of reasons for my ability to
walk through the halls unchecked, I believe
that I am able to do so because of the confidence
and purpose I project when I walk.
This advice is not meant to encourage
students to roam the hallways aimlessly;
rather, this advice should be applied to one’s
approach to his or her decision-making process.
It has been my experience that people
who seem like they “have it all together”
are not immune to failure, though others
might think so. What sets these seemingly
successful people apart is their confidence
in their decisions.
It is my opinion that in order to
learn, to grow, and to achieve whatever one
may deem success, one must make decisions
and cling to them steadfastly. Uncertainty
can bring ruin to a person. One of my
favorite poems, “Don’t Quit,” contains similar
advice: “[M]any a fellow turns about /
When he might have won had he stuck it out
/ Don’t give up though the pace seems slow
/ You may succeed with another blow.” Perseverance
does not guarantee success, but
success rarely comes without it.
I do not mean to say that one’s
something I think I’m pretty good at,
which is being critical. Here are a few
common quotes used for graduation
speeches, and why I think they should
not apply to your life. I suppose you
can consider this advice.
“Live each day as if it were
you last.”Let’s think about this logically.
If every day was lived as if it
were the last, there would be no reason
to do anything. No one would
save money and they could recklessly
spend it, assuming they would
not have another day. Furthermore,
no one would plan for the future in
general. Life consists of planning and
preparing for the future. People go
to school to learn so they will get a
job so they can make money for the
future. It’s better to look at life in the
long run and to make good decisions
that will benefit a person for the future.
“If you can dream it, you can
be it.” This is logistically unlikely.
So after much soul-searching and
a chance encounter with my right-hand man
Emily Rusnak, I discovered this wonderful
song from the late nineties that I believe expresses
everything one needs to know to lead
a successful life. It’s super long, so I’ve picked
out what I believe to be the most important
parts. It’s not boring, I promise, so please read
it, study it, and LIVE BY IT. Now, without
further adieu, I present to you the wise words
of Baz Luhrmann.
Ahem. Ladies and Gentlemen of the
class of 2011. “Wear sunscreen. Enjoy the
power and beauty of your youth. You’re not
as fat as you imagine. Don’t worry about the
future. The real troubles in your life are apt
to be things that never crossed your worried
mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on
some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday
that scares you. Sing. Don’t be reckless with
other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people
who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don’t
waste your time on jealousy. Remember the
compliments you receive, forget the insults; if
you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Don’t
feel guilty if you don’t know what you want
to do with your life. Get plenty of calcium.
Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe
decisions will always be correct, but confidence
in one’s decisions regardless of correctness
is essential to becoming an adult.
This confidence leads to one accepting responsibility
for the consequences of one’s
decisions, whether positive or negative. It
is far better to fail of one’s own accord and
learn from the mistake than to achieve all of
one’s success on the shoulders of others and
recieve credit for nothing.
In the weeks, months and years
ahead, many members of the Class of 2011
will be unsure of the paths they pursue,
but I encourage you to see your decisions
through.
As I sit here writing this farewell, I
am listening to a Disney playlist, which reminds
me of “Toy Story.” At the end of this
movie Buzz Lightyear says that he is not
flying; rather, he is “falling with style.”
This is my hope for the Class of
2011. Fall with style. Pursue the next chapter
of your life with confidence, determination
and purpose, even if you fall from the
sky.
You may dream to be an astronaut, but
if you get motion sickness, that dream
will almost definitely not be fulfilled.
Dreaming big is dangerous. It sets you
up for disappointment. Goals should
be made in small incrimints. Dreaming
“big” is a bit of a waste of time,
but dreaming in and of itself is pretty
wasteful. Dreaming about something
does not prescribe action. Do things,
don’t dream about them.
“Success is the ability to go
from one failure to another with no
loss of enthusiasm” Probably not.
Eventually you need to do something
right. If you are good at failing, good
for you, but chances are, you’re not a
success. If you’re going to fail, learn
from failure, stop failing, and do
something right.
Think about quotes before
you use them. And try not to live by
aphorisms, if you do, you will definitely
be as cliche as the aphorism
that is used.
you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe
you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the
funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what
ever you do, don’t congratulate
yourself too much or berate yourself either.
Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but
in your own living room. Do NOT read beauty
magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents, you never know
when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your
siblings; they are the best link to your past and
the people most likely to stick with you in the
future. Understand that friends come and go,
but for the precious few you should hold on.
Live in New York City once, but leave before
it makes you hard; live in Northern California
once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will
rise, politicians will philander, you too will get
old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that
when you were young prices were reasonable,
politicians were noble and children respected
their elders. Respect your elders. Seriously,
don’t forget to wear sunscreen.”
That is all. Now, go out and lead a
happy life full of success and great things.
It’s been real.
What is your favorite
teacher quote?
“Life sucks and
then you die.”
Congratulations to the Class
of 2011! I can honestly say that this
current senior class consists of the
most enthusiastic, caring and hardworking
students who have walked
the halls of Stow-Munroe Falls High
School. I found it refreshing to see
the excitement and hear the cheerful
chatters as the seniors greeted each
other bright and early every school
day. The Class of 2011 has a unique
cohesiveness and the students are
open-minded and genuinely treat
one another with kindness and respect,
as if they were a family.
Please remember as you
embark on adulthood that there is
no such thing as failure. As long
I hope that you know that there
is a soft spot in my heart for all of you
since the class of 2011 was assigned to
me way back when you were freshmen.
We were a “unit” for three years, and I
have observed you guys grow up in a
great way!
As a school
counselor, I have a
unique perspective—to
watch you mature regarding
your academic,
career, and social goals.
You all should be very
proud of the young men
and women you have
become. For many of
you, your academic and
career goals have been
reached and surpassed.
Don’t I always say that
“hard work always pays
off?” It has been fun to
watch you in athletics,
in the Junior and Senior
class plays, in the All-
School Musical, in Marching and Concert
Band and other musical activities, in
student government, club leadership and
volunteerism, and in service opportunities.
I have observed you pursue Post
Secondary education, learn and grown
Farewells
as you give your best effort in
whatever you do and work to
the best of your ability, you are
a winner. It is quite possible
that you may change your major
while attending college or
some other continuing education
program. You will also
most likely change jobs several
times in your adult life; possibly
even switching careers several
times. You will undoubtedly
move a number of times,
make new friends, lose or keep
old friends, meet new people
and develop a family of your
own some day. But the thing
to remember while you are living
day-to-day and striving to
achieve your life-long goals is that it
is okay to make mistakes, to change
your mind and to change paths.
Change can be healthy and productive,
as long as you are reflective and
weigh the pros and cons of your actions.
Keep a positive attitude and
keep moving forward, and whatever
you do, don’t lose your heartfelt, enthusiastic,
full-of-life attitude that
keeps you genuine.
I wish you all the very best
in all that you do. Continue to have
faith and purpose, and treat yourself
and others well.
Love,
Mrs. Whitmer ,
in our 6 District Career classes, and ultimately
challenge yourselves in our AP
classes. The class of 2011 has created a
very definite standard here at SMFHS—
your own little niche of greatness! You
will definitely be missed!! We are so
proud of your accomplishments, so
thankful for your leadership and example,
and so happy
to wish you
nothing but the
best. As each
of you continue
to strive
toward your
goals and make
a difference in
this challenging
world, I
will look on
with pride and
remember the
SMFHS days
when you were
my counselees.
So along with
the other counselors in the guidance department,
Ms. Paul, Mr. Martinelli, and
Mr. Lepard, we say, “You go Class of
Mrs. Teresa Miller
Dear Seniors,
I wish you all the warmest
memories of your
Alma Mater, and best
wishes for all that is
yet to come. Distinguish
yourselves in all
that you do. Remember
that nothing good ever
comes easy, and never
take the easy way out.
You deserve the best,
but you must always earn
what you get. Find the joy in
all that you do. The journey
is the most exciting part of
getting where you are going.
Seniors celebrate
last day of school
at Senior Picnic
By: Jimmmy Miller
Editior
For about 12 years now,
the seniors at SMFHS have been
able to spend some of their last moments
together at the football stadium
while enjoying a picnic.
This year, on May 20, the
Senior Picnic program was put on
again during school hours, and after
the school’s Prom Promise program.
“I thought the picnic was
a lot of fun,” senior Daniel Kargbo
said.
Led by Ken Miller and
Elaine Sayre, the Senior Executive
Committee put on the event. Included
in the group is Veronica Whitmer,
Gina Bonfiglio, Amanda Cacioppo,
Katie Hill, Jessie Bose, Sierra Bilheimer,
Winnie Pham and Theresa
Sanders.
Food that was served at
the picnic included hamburgers, hot
dogs, french fries, sodas, apple pies
and chips. Games were also played
during the event, such as ultimate
frisbee, according to Kargbo. A Slip
N’ Slide was also available for the
picnic.
“I thought the event was
very successful. It was a wonderful
opportunity for the seniors to
gather and share some of our final
moments of our high school careers.
It was a very enjoyable afternoon,
and a wonderful end to senior year,”
Whitmer, the Senior Class President,
said.
The picnic marked the
final day seniors were to participate
in classes at SMFHS, and the
final hours of their senior year as a
whole. When the picnic began to
wind down, students talked to each
other for possibly the last time before
heading off.
“Getting to chill with all
my friends on the Band bleachers
one last time [was very special to
me],” senior Andy Kremyar said.
Having these moments
was why the picnic was held in the
first place, according to Miller.
“[The picnic is] one last
opportunity to get the seniors together
to have some fellowship.”
Whitmer said that although
the picnic was a big success,
she would have liked to see a class
picture taken as one last memory of
the group all together in one place.
The picnic was not the
only event to take place that weekend.
While Prom Promise occurred
the same day, the SMFHS Senior
Prom was set for May 21.
Seniors attend banquet to eat and receive awards.
Who would you like
to be as successful
as? Why?
I couldn’t really say that I
would want to be as successful
as someone else. I
have no idols or people to
live up to or attempt to follow.
I would like to be as
successful as possible, as
successful as Zane.
Zane Novak
I would like to be as successful
as Bill Gates because
not only is he successful at
his chosen career but he has
also used his success to give
back to those in need.
1. Who was your favorite teacher at SMFHS and why?
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Badar. She is passionate, organized
and cares so much that all her students realize
just how passionate she is about teaching us.
2. What is your favorite journalism memory?
I will miss the everyday things in journalism. Jocelyn
hitting on Jenna, Jenna antagonizing Donaldson, and
being excited for the paper to come out. I will not
miss trying to teach Mitchell how to spell words
like “receive.”
3. What do you plan on doing in the future?
I’m going to American University in Washington
D.C.
4. What was the most important factor
for you when you were deciding which
college to attend?
Location, availability of internships, majors.
7. Which cartoon is better. Rugrats or Hey
8. Backstreet Boys or N*Sync?
N*SYNC. I went to the Celebrity concert
and another because my mom and I liked it so
much the first time. I touched JC’s hand.
9. If SMFHS had to choose a different
mascot, what should it be?
Mascots are silly.
1.Who was your favorite teacher at SMFHS
2- develop a marketable skill”
-Sean Blasko, senior of 2010
“Don’t get lost in the academics. Sure, the grades are important,
and that’s ultimately why you’re there. But be sure to
appreciate your friends, and the social aspect of it, too.”
-Colin Anderson, senior of 2011
“Get involved. You should milk everything you can out of highschool.
It’ll be fun while you are doing it, even if you’re spending an extra 5
hours at the highschool to build sets or running miles until you collapse
wth exhaustion, and it will look great on college applications. Life
if there for the taking, so don’t sacrifice your happiness, don’t sacrifice
opportunity because of silly things, there will be somebody there to
support you.”
-Jack Veatch, senior of 2011
“Always abstain from repetition. Always
be suspicious of new people and new
things. Familiarity leads to mediocrity.
Exploration leads to catastrophe.”
-Simon Hunt, senior of 2011
“Don’t wish away school! It
goes by so fast! Have fun!”
Chelsea Simpson, senior of
2011
“The best advice i can give from my personal experience is
don’t waste any moment, and if you make a bad choice or
have a bad experience, NEVER regret anything. Always learn
from your mistakes and take something positive out of every
moment.”
-Matt Weitzenhoffer, senior of 2011
Freshman year because it
was my first year at Stow
since fourth grade and I
made a whole bunch of
friends whom I’m still best
friends with. Since I wasn’t
here, I got to see how people
had grown up since I
went to Woodland.
